      "body": "The Ban on Smoking in Public Places (Larangan Merokok di Tempat Umum)\n\n     Smoking ban in public places has been a hot issue these last months not only in Malta but also in various countries who are discussing the effects a ban would have. There have been several debates on smoking ban. Even though the harmful effects of smoking, both active and passive, are well known and undeniable smoking is far from being in decline; it is spreading among young people in particular quickly. \n\n     Most controversial debate is going on public smoking ban. The reason is simple, smoking ban affects directly all people rapidly and we can see its effects in a short-term period. There have been a lot of arguments brought up both in favour and against a public smoking ban. Some of the arguments in favour are the following. Smoking ban is one of the controversial ways for reducing smoking and recognizing non-smokers’ right to health protection. The health risks of smoking are clear. Passive smoking does carry risks. Many leading medical and scientific organizations recognize second hand smoke as a cause of a range of life-threatening conditions. The health situation could be drastically improved if one of the risk factors - tobacco - was eliminated. People have a right to protect themselves from smoke inhalation. People shouldn’t have to inhale the ill-effects of other people’s smoking. The creation of smoke-free public places also improves air quality.\n  \n     Those opposing a smoking ban say that freedom of choice would be affected by such legislation. Some people against a ban say that smoking bans damage business. A smoking ban could lead to a significant fall in earnings from bars, restaurants and casinos. Another argument is that the smoker has a basic human right to smoke in public places, and the ban is a limitation for smokers’ rights. Businesses, smokers, publicans, tobacco industries, stars, and some of the non-smokers oppose public smoking ban. Smokers light a cigarette because they need to smoke, not because they want it, because nicotine is physically addictive. Therefore, some smokers think that the public smoking ban is oppressiveness. They see the ban as a treatment to smokers as second-class citizens. Smokers agree that the smoking ban benefits the world, but cannot support the ban, because effects of nicotine obstruct them.\n\n     Public smoking ban needs to be measured and understood better. Too often writing is a lonely task and poetry so personal that it excludes others until they read the final result. But both poets and audiences are intimately involved in the process. Readers are not consumers looking for a pair of shoes, but people trying to discover something about how they feel, as well as understand the emotions of the person writing the poem. This spirit of openness and participation is right here from the start in this collection. \n\nHarold is one of nine children, raised by his mother. In the Introduction he tells us about public moments that have shaped his life (Martin Luther King’s ”I Have a Dream” speech, Muhammad Ali’s “I can float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.”) as well as very private ones like attending the wedding of a girl he was still very much in love with. This not only gives us an insight into the person behind these poems, it helps us understand their inspiration and connection to things outside of the words. “The Bee in the Web” draws on the “butterfly”/”bee” of Ali’s boast, yet expands on it to a message of racial harmony as opposed to one of militant aggression and separatism. \nThere are some great titles (“The Martian and the Wino,” “W Stands for Wrong\", ”Fasten Your Seatbelt”) and lines that make us think (“Sometimes I feel that life’s a curse, has front-wheel drive and no reverse” and the very poignant “I hate in order to protect yourself—you pack a gun or mace. So why don’t I say what the hell and hate the human race.”) There are also some bad lines: “Her skin is cream, her body is slim. Looking at her makes the average saint sin.”—perhaps, but what or who is “the average saint”? The book ends with a sweet poem by Charla Angeline Hultmann (and I really like the candor of her bio) called “Gift” and “giving” is the real spirit of this book of poetry. \nI will be honest, I am not a fan of rhyme. There is a delight in adjacent sounds rubbing together—vowels held and savored, consonants clicking in a row—but “easy” rhymes (“head”/“dead”; “love”/”dove”; “moon”/”prune”) tend to overshadow poetic subtleties, determine word choice and the words themselves lose their meaning, becoming clichés. But this is the music of this poet’s generation, and there is no denying that poetry is more alive, more meaningful and more accessible than it has ever been at any other time during my life. PS I do love the “Osama” “mama” rhyme. In general I think it would benefit Harold Nash’s development to read more of the published contemporary Black poets. \nBut form aside, this is an honest (courageous and unflinching) look at life today—one we need to share together for the survival of us all. Ungkapan ini dipublikasikan diungkapkan pertama kalinya dalam buku yang berjudul \"Cours De Philosophie Positive\" karangan August Comte (1798-1857). \nWalaupun banyak definisi tentang sosiologi namun umumnya sosiologi dikenal sebagai ilmu pengetahuan tentang “masyarakat” . Masyarakat adalah sekelompok individu yang mempunyai hubungan, memiliki kepentingan bersama, dan memiliki budaya. Sosiologi hendak mempelajari masyarakat, perilaku masyarakat, dan perilaku sosial manusia dengan mengamati perilaku kelompok yang dibangunnya. Sebagai sebuah ilmu, sosiologi merupakan pengetahuan kemasyarakatan yang tersusun dari hasil-hasil pemikiran ilmiah dan dapat di kontrol secara kritis oleh orang lain atau umum.\n\n    * 1842: Istilah Sosiologi sebagai cabang Ilmu Sosial dicetuskan pertama kali oleh ilmuwan Perancis, bernama August Comte tahun 1842 dan kemudian dikenal sebagai Bapak Sosiologi. Sosiologi sebagai ilmu yang mempelajari tentang masyarakat lahir di Eropa karena ilmuwan Eropa pada abad ke-19 mulai menyadari perlunya secara khusus mempelajari kondisi dan perubahan sosial. Para ilmuwan itu kemudian berupaya membangun suatu teori sosial berdasarkan ciri-ciri hakiki masyarakat pada tiap tahap peradaban manusia.  Comte membedakan antara sosiologi statis, dimana perhatian dipusatkan pada hukum-hukum statis yang menjadi dasar adanya masyarakat dan sosiologi dinamis dimana perhatian dipusatkan tentang perkembangan masyarakat dalam arti pembangunan. Rintisan Comte tersebut disambut hangat oleh masyarakat luas, tampak dari tampilnya sejumlah ilmuwan besar di bidang sosiologi.  Mereka antara lain Herbert Spencer, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, Ferdinand Tönnies, Georg Simmel, Max Weber, dan Pitirim Sorokin(semuanya berasal dari Eropa).  Masing-masing berjasa besar menyumbangkan beragam pendekatan mempelajari masyarakat yang amat berguna untuk perkembangan Sosiologi.\n1876: Di Inggris Herbert Spencer mempublikasikan Sosiology dan memperkenalkan pendekatan analogi organik, yang memahami masyarakat seperti tubuh manusia, sebagai suatu organisasi yang terdiri atas bagian-bagian yang tergantung satu sama lain.\n \n\n   * Karl Marx memperkenalkan pendekatan materialisme dialektis, yang menganggap konflik antar-kelas sosial menjadi intisari perubahan dan perkembangan masyarakat.\n* Max Weber memperkenalkan pendekatan verstehen (pemahaman), yang berupaya menelusuri nilai, kepercayaan, tujuan, dan sikap yang menjadi penuntun perilaku manusia.\n\n\nPOKOK BAHASAN SOSIOLOGI\n\n1.Fakta sosial sebagai cara bertindak, berpikir, dan berperasaan yang berada di luar individu dan mempunya kekuatan memaksa dan mengendalikan individu tersebut.  Contoh, di sekolah seorang murid diwajidkan untuk datang tepat waktu, menggunakan seragam, dan bersikap hormat kepada guru. Kewajiban-kewajiban tersebut dituangkan ke dalam sebuah aturan dan memiliki sanksi tertentu jika dilanggar. Dari contoh tersebut bisa dilihat adanya cara bertindak, berpikir, dan berperasaan yang ada di luar individu (sekolah), yang bersifat memaksa dan mengendalikan individu (murid).\n2. Tindakan sosial sebagai tindakan yang dilakukan dengan mempertimbangkan perilaku orang lain.  Contoh, menanam bunga untuk kesenangan pribadi bukan merupakan tindakan sosial, tetapi menanam bunga untuk diikutsertakan dalam sebuah lomba sehingga mendapat perhatian orang lain, merupakan tindakan sosial.\n3. Khayalan sosiologis sebagai cara untuk memahami apa yang terjadi di masyarakat maupun yang ada dalam diri manusia.  Menurut Wright Mills, dengan khayalan sosiologi, kita mampu memahami sejarah masyarakat, riwayat hidup pribadi, dan hubungan antara keduanya. Alat untuk melakukan khayalan sosiologis adalah permasalahan (troubles) dan isu (issues). Permasalahan pribadi individu merupakan ancaman terhadap nilai-nilai pribadi. Isu merupakan hal yang ada di luar jangkauan kehidupan pribadi individu. Contoh, jika suatu daerah hanya memiliki satu orang yang menganggur, maka pengangguran itu adalah masalah. Masalah individual ini pemecahannya bisa lewat peningkatan keterampilan pribadi. Sementara jika di kota tersebut ada 12 juta penduduk yang menganggur dari 18 juta jiwa yang ada, maka pengangguran tersebut merupakan isu, yang pemecahannya menuntut kajian lebih luas lagi.\n\n4. Realitas sosial adalah penungkapan tabir menjadi suatu realitas yang tidak terduga oleh sosiolog dengan mengikuti aturan-aturan ilmiah dan melakukan pembuktian secara ilmiah dan objektif dengan pengendalian prasangka pribadi, dan pengamatan tabir secara jeli serta menghindari penilaian normative\nCiri-Ciri dan Hakikat Sosiologi\n\nSosiologi merupakan salah satu bidang ilmu sosial yang mempelajari masyarakat. Sosiologi sebagai ilmu telah memenuhi semua unsur ilmu pengetahuan. Menurut Harry M. Johnson, yang dikutip oleh Soerjono Soekanto, sosiologi sebagai ilmu mempunyai ciri-ciri, sebagai berikut.\n* Empiris, yaitu didasarkan pada observasi dan akal sehat yang hasilnya tidak bersifat spekulasi (menduga-duga).\n* Teoritis, yaitu selalu berusaha menyusun abstraksi dari hasil observasi yang konkret di lapangan, dan abstraksi tersebut merupakan kerangka dari unsur-unsur yang tersusun secara logis dan bertujuan menjalankan hubungan sebab akibat sehingga menjadi teori.\n* Komulatif, yaitu disusun atas dasar teori-teori yang sudah ada, kemudian diperbaiki, diperluas sehingga memperkuat teori-teori yang lama.\n* Nonetis, yaitu pembahasan suatu masalah tidak mempersoalkan baik atau buruk masalah tersebut, tetapi lebih bertujuan untuk menjelaskan masalah tersebut secara mendalam.\n\nHakikat sosiologi sebagai ilmu pengetahuan \n\n* Sosiologi adalah ilmu sosial karena yang dipelajari adalah gejala-gejala kemasyarakatan.\n* Sosiologi termasuk disiplin ilmu normatif, bukan merupakan disiplin ilmu kategori yang membatasi diri pada kejadian saat ini dan bukan apa yang terjadi atau seharusnya terjadi.\n* Sosiologi termasuk ilmu pengetahuan murni (pure science) dan ilmu pengetahuan terapan.\n* Sosiologi merupakan ilmu pengetahuan abstrak dan bukan ilmu pengetahuan konkret.
