titleUnderstanding Crypto Market Basics
body

Hello Reader,

Firstly, let me apologise for the time since my last article, life has a habit of getting in the way. For my returning readers, you have my sincere thanks for continuing to check back during the temporary hiatus.

In my preceding articles, we have built an understanding of how crypto currency works and how you can get started using it. This article is going to take a more macro view of the crypto currency economy. We will begin with with the basics of commonly used terminology.

The Crypto Currency Market

One site has emerged as the de facto authority on the state of the crypto currency market. Reader, let me introduce you to your soon-to-be most visited website, CoinMarketCap.com. (Note: I'm sorry).

The site is a simple to follow one stop shop providing a list of all major crypto currencies and assets of any real value. It provides detailed information for each individual crypto along with aggregated information for the market as a whole. But what on earth does it all mean?

Key terminology

Currently, all crypto currencies have some very similar attributes which determine their overall market value.

You will see both crypto currencies and crypto assets listed. A currency in this context is a crypto which can operate entirely independently and an asset (or token) is a crypto which operates on top of another crypto. For example, Golem is a token which operates on Ethereum.

Let's take a look at the key overview information provided on the CMC homepage.

Rank #

The first column details the current rank of the crypto. In this case, we are looking at Bitcoin which is ranked 1st and so listed at the top. Rank is determined by overall market cap (see below).

Name

Hopefully you don't need too much help with this one, this is the full name of the currency or asset, in this case, Bitcoin. Clicking the name will take you to the dedicated page for that asset.

Note that like the stock market, each crypto has an abbreviated ticker symbol as well as it's full name. As an example, Bitcoin is often referred to by its ticker of BTC. You can use both the full name and ticker symbol to search CMC.

Market Cap

Short for Market Capitalisation, CMC's namesake. Market capitalisation is a term borrowed from traditional company valuation. In the context of crypto currency, it is calculated as the number of units of the currency or asset, multiplied by the current market price of each unit. For example, if a crypto has one million units of circulating supply and a current market price of $1, it would have a market cap of $1 million.

Price

The price is the current market value of one unit of the crypto. In this case, I've handily took my screenshot just as one Bitcoin was worth $4,000.

But how is this calculated?

The price is the current volume weighted average value of one unit on the many different crypto currency exchanges monitored by CMC.

Generally speaking, the price is the balance between people wishing to sell and people wishing to buy. On average, market participants agree that this is a fair representation of the value of one unit.

If demand outstrips available supply, then the price will rise. Inversely, if demand is less than available supply, the price will fall.

The price changes constantly, unlike traditional stock markets which are only live during working hours, crypto markets run 24 hours a day, every day of the week. The crypto machine does not rest, expect no respite.

Circulating Supply

The circulating supply of a crypto asset is the number of units which have been released to the world at the current time. For Bitcoin, there are currently circa 16.5 million bitcoins in existence out of a maximum of 21 million that will ever be released. In the case of Bitcoin, coins are released every 10 minutes through the process known as mining which I covered here.

The current number of circulating units, the maximum potential supply and the method through which units are released is generally different for each crypto.

As a result, the basic price of a unit of one crypto is typically not comparable to the unit price of another which is why market cap is used as the comparison instead.

To illustrate, if there are 1m units of crypto A and 10m units of crypto B and both have a unit price of $1 then the collective market cap A is $1m and B is $10m.

If you have 1000 units of A and 1000 units of B, you own a larger overall percentage of the supply of A then you do of B. This is an important consideration in understanding the potential unit price of any given crypto. The price potential of a crypto with a low overall supply is likely to be much higher than another crypto with a high overall supply assuming all other attributes and market perception of the two are identical.

Clearly this is a gross over simplification of the market economics in play, but it outlines the importance of understanding the relative supply of different crypto currencies.

Volume (24h)

Volume in this context refers to the collective value in USD of the number of units of the asset which have been traded on those exchanges that CMC actively monitors over the last 24 hour period. Volume can often be used as an approximation of the current market popularity of an asset.

% Change (24h)

This is a percentage which reflects the change in price of one unit of the asset over the last 24 hour period. For example, if 24 hours ago an asset was worth $1.00 and is now worth $1.10, the change over that period is +10%.

Price Graph (7d)

The price graph is a handy miniture visualisation of how the price has changed over the last 24 hour period. Upward slopes represent price increases and downward slopes represent price decreases.

Overall Crypto Market Cap

At the top of the home page of CMC you can see the overall market cap of all currently measured crypto currencies combined. At present, this stands at $138 billion. This can serve as a useful indicator of the overall sentiment of the entire crypto currency economy. For example, several weeks ago, this reached an all time high in the region of $175 billion. This was followed by a harsh crash in the market from which the collective value has yet to recover.

BTC Dominance

Again, shown at the top of the home page of CMC, this refers to the market cap of Bitcoin as a percentage of the overall market cap of all crypto currencies combined. As $66.3Bn / $137.9Bn this means Bitcoin represents 48% of the overall crypto economy. This is considered a useful measure of Bitcoins continued importance in the context of the overall market.

Closing Thoughts

The above should arm you with a basic understanding of the main terminology used in the crypto markets.Click on a few of your favourite crypto's to be taken to their respective CMC pages. On each page you'll find a wealth of useful resources in addition to the above:

relevant websites

blockchain explorers

message forums

price in BTC (and ETH for ERC20 crypto's)

key attributes

detailed graphs with customisable time periods and scaling

a list of all monitored exchanges and current prices

relevant social links included twitter and reddit

javascript embed code for hosting live info on your site

historical price information

In a future article, we will take a look at how you can better exploit the wealth of data maintained by CMC through use of their application programming interface (API).

As ever, comments and questions are always welcome. I'd love to hear from those of your still reading after the recent article drought!

Until next time my friends...

If you’ve enjoyed this article, it would be my honour to have you as a regular reader 🙂

Yours, X

Image: Wikimedia.org

Our little fur ball...

Inversely, if demand is less than available supply, the price will fall.
\n
The price changes constantly, unlike traditional stock markets which are only live during working hours, crypto markets run 24 hours a day, every day of the week. The crypto machine does not rest, expect no respite.
\n
Circulating Supply
\n
The circulating supply of a crypto asset is the number of units which have been released to the world at the current time. For Bitcoin, there are currently circa 16.5 million bitcoins in existence out of a maximum of 21 million that will ever be released. In the case of Bitcoin, coins are released every 10 minutes through the process known as mining which I covered here.
\n
The current number of circulating units, the maximum potential supply and the method through which units are released is generally different for each crypto.
\n
As a result, the basic price of a unit of one crypto is typically not comparable to the unit price of another which is why market cap is used as the comparison instead.
\n
To illustrate, if there are 1m units of crypto A and 10m units of crypto B and both have a unit price of $1 then the collective market cap A is $1m and B is $10m.
\n
If you have 1000 units of A and 1000 units of B, you own a larger overall percentage of the supply of A then you do of B. This is an important consideration in understanding the potential unit price of any given crypto. The price potential of a crypto with a low overall supply is likely to be much higher than another crypto with a high overall supply assuming all other attributes and market perception of the two are identical.
\n
Clearly this is a gross over simplification of the market economics in play, but it outlines the importance of understanding the relative supply of different crypto currencies.
\n
Volume (24h)
\n
Volume in this context refers to the collective value in USD of the number of units of the asset which have been traded on those exchanges that CMC actively monitors over the last 24 hour period. Volume can often be used as an approximation of the current market popularity of an asset.
\n
% Change (24h)
\n
This is a percentage which reflects the change in price of one unit of the asset over the last 24 hour period. For example, if 24 hours ago an asset was worth $1.00 and is now worth $1.10, the change over that period is +10%.
\n
Price Graph (7d)
\n
The price graph is a handy miniture visualisation of how the price has changed over the last 24 hour period. Upward slopes represent price increases and downward slopes represent price decreases.
\n
Overall Crypto Market Cap
\n
At the top of the home page of CMC you can see the overall market cap of all currently measured crypto currencies combined. At present, this stands at $138 billion. This can serve as a useful indicator of the overall sentiment of the entire crypto currency economy. For example, several weeks ago, this reached an all time high in the region of $175 billion. This was followed by a harsh crash in the market from which the collective value has yet to recover.
\n
BTC Dominance
\n
Again, shown at the top of the home page of CMC, this refers to the market cap of Bitcoin as a percentage of the overall market cap of all crypto currencies combined. As $66.3Bn / $137.9Bn this means Bitcoin represents 48% of the overall crypto economy. This is considered a useful measure of Bitcoins continued importance in the context of the overall market.
\n
Closing Thoughts
\n
The above should arm you with a basic understanding of the main terminology used in the crypto markets.Click on a few of your favourite crypto's to be taken to their respective CMC pages. On each page you'll find a wealth of useful resources in addition to the above:
\n
\n
relevant websites
\n
blockchain explorers
\n
message forums
\n
price in BTC (and ETH for ERC20 crypto's)
\n
key attributes
\n
detailed graphs with customisable time periods and scaling
\n
a list of all monitored exchanges and current prices
\n
relevant social links included twitter and reddit
\n
javascript embed code for hosting live info on your site
\n
historical price information
\n
\n
In a future article, we will take a look at how you can better exploit the wealth of data maintained by CMC through use of their application programming interface (API).
\n
As ever, comments and questions are always welcome. I'd love to hear from those of your still reading after the recent article drought!
\n
Until next time my friends...
\n
If you’ve enjoyed this article, it would be my honour to have you as a regular reader 🙂
\n
Yours, X
\n
Image: Wikimedia.org
\n
Our little fur ball...
\n

\n
",

titleSetting up a Parity Ethereum wallet
body

Hello Reader,

In the last article I took you through the various types of Ethereum wallet including my personal recommendations. In this article, I am going to provide you with an in depth guide to my favourite wallet, Parity.

Parity is an in-browser desktop wallet and dapp browser which is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. It is created by Parity technologies, a company setup by several alumni of the original Ethereum project, including Dr Gavin Wood.

The key design principles behind the project are to provide a light weight, fully featured, easy to use interface into the world of Ethereum and Web 3.0.My favourite features include:

High performance and light weight resource usage

Open source, so the code is available for review

Available for all major desktop platforms

Reliable, extensively peer reviewed and unit tested

Future proof, compliant with common standards

Snapshots the blockchain to enable fast syncing

Supports software and hardware wallets

You can control multiple wallets at once

Includes an inbuilt dapp / smart contract browser

Includes a browser plugin so you can browse dapps in your default browser

Advanced transaction features, such as custom fees, data and timed transactions

Supports ERC20 tokens

Sound like something you might be interested in?Great, let's get started...

A guide to using Parity

Step 1) Download parity for your platform of choice

The first step on the journey is to get hold of the latest version of Parity for your desktop platform. You can download the wallet software directly from the Parity website. I'm going to be using Windows 10 for this guide, but the principles are the same for all major platforms.

Download Parity

Step 2) Install parity

Run the install file and install Parity to your preferred system location.

Upon completion, Parity should automatically start and launch within your default web browser, so in my case; Chrome. If it doesn't automatically start, you can find and open it by typing Parity in the start menu.

Step 3) Create your Ethereum account

The first time you launch Parity, you should be presented with the create account wizard. Note that there are two types of account within Parity:

A basic account which uses a standard public / private key

A parity wallet which stores your funds within a smart contract

For the purposes of this guide, we will be creating a basic account, so if the wizard hasn't already appeared, press the Accounts tab and then press + Account. You should be presented with a screen that looks like this:

Select "New Account" and press Next to open the create account screen:

Enter an account name, hint, password, select an image and press Create

You will be presented with an overview of your new account information:

The address displayed is your public key which you can share with others to enable them to send you ether.

Beneath that you will be presented with a recovery phrase (deleted from the screenshot for obvious reasons). This is a backup seed which will grant you full access to the account. Write this phrase down or print it and store it somewhere secret. Do not save the phrase on any device connected to the internet.

Once finished, press Done to be taken back to the main Parity window.

Step 4) Check Parity is fully synchronised

At this point you are ready to start making transactions, but before you do, double check that Parity is fully synced with the Ethereum network.

Traditional ethereum clients require you to first download the entire blockchain before you can properly use them. Given the size of the blockchain, this process can take several days to complete.

Parity uses a process known as snapshotting to speed up this sync which means that you will typically only need to download the most recent ethereum blocks before you are ready to go.

You can see the latest block that Parity has downloaded in the bottom right of the screen:

In this example, my client has downloaded through to block number 4,072,957. As there is no " / block x" after this, I can assume I am fully up to date. However, you can always check the latest block number by visiting etherscan.io.

Step 5) Receive Ether to your new account

Press Accounts and select the brand new account you have just created to be taken to the account management page:

From this screen, we are able to do several things:

Check the balance of our account

View previous transactions

Find our public address to share with others so they can send us Ether (or Tokens)

Transfer, or send, our Ether (or Tokens) to others

Deposit Ether into our account by sending another crypto currency (e.g. Bitcoin) via the third party service shapeshift.io

Verify our account via SMS or Email

Edit the key details of our account

Change the password

Delete the account

Let's get some Ether into our account. In my example I am going to send some that I have previously purchased from Coinbase.com, but any exchange will work in a similar fashion:

Copy the address from Parity and enter it into the coinbase recipient field

Enter the amount of Ether you wish to send from your coinbase wallet

Be sure to select your Ether wallet (and not your BTC / LTC wallet)

Add an optional note

Check the totals and network fee look correct

Press Send Funds

Enter your 2FA key (you do have 2FA setup right?)

Confirm the transaction

Your funds will arrive in your parity wallet within the next few blocks

Step 6) Send Ether from your account

Now that we have ether in our account, we are free to send it to whomever we choose. In this example, I'm going to send it to my coinbase wallet as I'm planning on cashing out some lovely profit.

From the account management screen, press Transfer:

Complete the page as follows:

Ensure Ethereum is selected from the type of token dropdown

Enter your recipient address, in this case my coinbase wallet

Enter the amount you wish to send

By default, the network fee is calculated automatically

Press Send

The confirm transaction dialog will pop up:

Enter your account password and press Confirm Request

Your transaction will then be broadcast to the Ethereum network and you will be presented with a screen to follow it's progress:

Once your transaction has confirmed with the network, your funds should appear in your coinbase wallet.

Key watch outs

Always keep Parity up to date. Just recently a bug in the wallet smart contract was found which made user funds vulnerable.

Do not click unknown links and keep your computer and anti virus up to date

Write down your password and seed, store them offline in different locations

Do not share your private key with anyone

Double check all of your transaction details before sending. You now know how to setup an account, receive and send Ether.

In a later article we will look at some of Parity's more advanced features such as sending custom transactions, transacting with Etherum tokens and browsing dapps on Web 3.0.

As ever, comments and questions are always welcome. In this article, I am going to provide you with an in depth guide to my favourite wallet, Parity.
\n
Parity is an in-browser desktop wallet and dapp browser which is available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. It is created by Parity technologies, a company setup by several alumni of the original Ethereum project, including Dr Gavin Wood.
\n
The key design principles behind the project are to provide a light weight, fully featured, easy to use interface into the world of Ethereum and Web 3.0.My favourite features include:
\n
\n
High performance and light weight resource usage
\n
Open source, so the code is available for review
\n
Available for all major desktop platforms
\n
Reliable, extensively peer reviewed and unit tested
\n
Future proof, compliant with common standards
\n
Snapshots the blockchain to enable fast syncing
\n
Supports software and hardware wallets
\n
You can control multiple wallets at once
\n
Includes an inbuilt dapp / smart contract browser
\n
Includes a browser plugin so you can browse dapps in your default browser
\n
Advanced transaction features, such as custom fees, data and timed transactions
\n
Supports ERC20 tokens
\n
\n
Sound like something you might be interested in?Great, let's get started...
\n
A guide to using Parity
\n
Step 1) Download parity for your platform of choice
\n
The first step on the journey is to get hold of the latest version of Parity for your desktop platform. You can download the wallet software directly from the Parity website. I'm going to be using Windows 10 for this guide, but the principles are the same for all major platforms.
\n
Download Parity
\n

\n
Step 2) Install parity
\n
Run the install file and install Parity to your preferred system location.
\n

\n
Upon completion, Parity should automatically start and launch within your default web browser, so in my case; Chrome. If it doesn't automatically start, you can find and open it by typing Parity in the start menu.
\n
Step 3) Create your Ethereum account
\n
The first time you launch Parity, you should be presented with the create account wizard. Note that there are two types of account within Parity:
\n
\n
A basic account which uses a standard public / private key
\n
A parity wallet which stores your funds within a smart contract
\n
\n
For the purposes of this guide, we will be creating a basic account, so if the wizard hasn't already appeared, press the Accounts tab and then press + Account. This is a backup seed which will grant you full access to the account. Write this phrase down or print it and store it somewhere secret. Do not save the phrase on any device connected to the internet.
\n
Once finished, press Done to be taken back to the main Parity window.
\n
Step 4) Check Parity is fully synchronised
\n
At this point you are ready to start making transactions, but before you do, double check that Parity is fully synced with the Ethereum network.
\n
Traditional ethereum clients require you to first download the entire blockchain before you can properly use them. bodyPutting Coinbase and MEW in the same category is pretty misleading.. Coinbase is an exchange, completely different from what MEW is. The fact that the user doesn't control the private keys on an exchange means it really isn't a wallet at all, it's just an account. There's also **zero** emphasis on security in this article, which is a massive red flag for any readers. Security isn't an afterthought in crypto, it's a fundamental pillar of the technology and ignoring it means you don't even know what crypto is about and you definitely shouldn't be putting money into it.

titleEthereum Wallets
body

Hello Reader,

In my previous post, I introduced you to Ethereum, including it's history and future. Now it's time to dip our toe in the water and take Ethereum out for a spin. In this post, I will take you through the main wallets available.

The water is warm so let's dive right in...

Just like with Bitcoin, the journey first begins with understanding how you store and transact the currency of the Ethereum network, Ether.

What wallets are available for Ether?

Generally, all of the wallet types that I covered in my introduction to Bitcoin wallets are available for Ethereum and the key principle that each wallet stores a series of private keys is the same.

There is however one key difference that you need to be aware of. As we learned in the last article, Ethereum makes smart contracts relatively easy to implement. As a result, many wallets include an additional feature over Bitcoin wallets which is the ability to browse and interact with decentralised applications built on the Ethereum network. Many of these dapps can be browsed and interacted with just like a web page. However, rather than being hosted on a web server, the dapps are running directly on top of the Ethereum network.

Let's take a look at some recommendations for each type.

Desktop wallets

Ethereum Wallet

Ethereum wallet is a simple wallet maintained by the developers of Ethereum. It operates as a full client and requires the entire blockchain to be downloaded. It does not enable you to browse dapps.

Mist

Mist is a fully featured wallet and dapp browser maintained by the developers of Ethereum. It operates as a full client and requires the entire blockchain to be downloaded.

Parity

Parity is an advanced wallet and dapp browser. The main ethos of the browser is to be lightweight and fast. It uses a process known as Warp Sync to speed up syncing of the Ethereum blockchain using snapshots. It also features traditional web browser integration so you can browse etheruem dapps in a standard browser.

Exodus

Exodus is the first of a new breed of wallets which support multiple crypto currencies including Ethereum, out of the box. Whilst you control the keys, note that Exodus is not open source and does not feature some of the advanced features of the Ethereum network.

Desktop & Mobile wallets

Jaxx

Jaxx is similar to Exodus and supports multiple crypto currencies. It also has the advantage of being available on iOS and Android. You control the keys and Jaxx source code is browseable but again it does not feature some of the advanced features of the Ethereum network.

Online wallets

Coinbase

Just like with Bitcoin, Coinbase is also the biggest online Ethereum exchange. It provides you with a simple to use online wallet. Coinbase does not dapp browsing. Note that you do not own the private keys.

MyEtherWallet

MyEtherWallet is an online open source wallet service which operates entirely in the clients browser. This means that MEW themselves never know the details of your private keys and you directly control them. MEW does not support dapp browsing.

Which of these would you recommend?

For someone completely new to Ethereum, I would start with Coinbase. They are well established, secure and used by millions. Beware that when using an online service, such as Coinbase, you do not have access to the private keys, so you are completely trusting the third party. This is fine for small amounts, but you should seriously consider setting up your own private wallet once you have a reasonable holding.

Once you have built up some confidence, I'd setup a desktop wallet, personally I'm a big fan of the speed and features of Parity. My personal favourite features are the snapshot syncing, timed transactions and traditional web browser integration. Check out my detailed guide to getting started with Parity.

Multi currency wallets, such as Exodus & Jaxx are tempting, however the extra complexity of supporting multiple currencies introduces additional attack vectors. Recently, Jaxx has faced controversy as it's PIN system was found to be vulnerable. In my opinion, these wallets have great potential and represent a promising future, but personally I'm waiting for them to have more thorough security audits before becoming an active user.

If you find yourself with a substantial holding, then a hardware wallet is the best way to go. I'll be taking a look at hardware wallets in more detail in a later article.

Adiós...

All comments and questions welcome, don't be shy!

If you’ve enjoyed this article, it would be my honour to have you as a regular reader.

Yours, X

Sources

Content: Xexr.com

Image: Wikimedia

Pensive roxy...

Note that you do not own the private keys.
\n

\n
MyEtherWallet
\n
MyEtherWallet is an online open source wallet service which operates entirely in the clients browser. This means that MEW themselves never know the details of your private keys and you directly control them. MEW does not support dapp browsing.
\n
Which of these would you recommend?
\n
For someone completely new to Ethereum, I would start with Coinbase. They are well established, secure and used by millions. Beware that when using an online service, such as Coinbase, you do not have access to the private keys, so you are completely trusting the third party. This is fine for small amounts, but you should seriously consider setting up your own private wallet once you have a reasonable holding.
\n
Once you have built up some confidence, I'd setup a desktop wallet, personally I'm a big fan of the speed and features of Parity. My personal favourite features are the snapshot syncing, timed transactions and traditional web browser integration. Check out my detailed guide to getting started with Parity.
\n
Multi currency wallets, such as Exodus & Jaxx are tempting, however the extra complexity of supporting multiple currencies introduces additional attack vectors. Recently, Jaxx has faced controversy as it's PIN system was found to be vulnerable. In my opinion, these wallets have great potential and represent a promising future, but personally I'm waiting for them to have more thorough security audits before becoming an active user.
\n
If you find yourself with a substantial holding, then a hardware wallet is the best way to go. I'll be taking a look at hardware wallets in more detail in a later article.
\n
Adiós...
\n
\nAll comments and questions welcome, don't be shy!
\n
If you’ve enjoyed this article, it would be my honour to have you as a regular reader.
\n
Yours, X
\n
Sources
\n
Content: Xexr.com
\n
Image: Wikimedia
\n
Pensive roxy...
\n

\n
",

titleWhat is Ethereum?
body

Hello Reader,

In my previous article we took a look at the different applications of blockchains and delved into the world of smart contracts. In this article we are going to explore a crypto currency built specifically around smart contracts, meet Ethereum.

Ethereum is a decentralised platform designed to run smart contracts originally proposed by Vitalik Buterin. The early development team grew rapidly with initial founders including Mihai Alisie, Anthony Di Iorio, Charles Hoskinson, Amir Chetrit, Dr Gavin Wood, Jeffrey Wilcke and Joseph Lubin.Let's take a few steps back to where it all began...

Birth of Ethereum

Ethereum was initially proposed in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin, a Russian-Canadian programmer and crypto currency enthusiast. Vitalik discovered Bitcoin in 2012 at the tender age of 17 from his father, Dmitry Buterin. Dmitry is a fintech innovator and the founder of BlockGeeks.

Vitalik began his crypto currency journey as a strong proponent of Bitcoin having originally written for Bitcoin Magazine. He argued that Bitcoin needed a scripting language to enable greater application development as opposed to the limited range of inbuilt operations. However, he failed to gain consensus from the Bitcoin community and so began to think about how else he could realise his dream of a fully programmable blockchain.

In late 2013, Vitalik published a whitepaper proposing the development of a new blockchain called Ethereum. I highly recommend that you take the time to read the whitepaper as it remains a valuable source of information.

Not long after this, Vitalik was awarded a $100k fellowship from famous venture capitalist Peter Thiel (cofounder of Paypal and Palantir) to develop and bring Ethereum to life.

The Ethereum Foundation and Crowdsale

Using the money from his fellowship, Vitalik co-founded the Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Switzerland. The Ethereum Foundation is currently led by Ming Chan, Vitalik Buterin and Jeffrey Wilcke.

To raise funds for the creation of the network, the Ethereum Foundation ran a fundraising crowd sale in the summer of 2014. Participants invested Bitcoin in exchange for Ether, the currency and fuel of the Ethereum network.

Whereas there will only ever be 21 million bitcoins, there isn't currently a comparable hard limit on the maximum number of ether. This is dependent on the final agreed issuance model which is still to be determined but is widely expected to result in around 100 million ether ultimately being created. At the time of writing there are 93 million ether in existence with each worth c. $200 for a combined market cap of c. $19 billion.

Alongside the successful completion of the Ether crowd sale, a development road map was prepared which included a series of stated development objectives.

In April 2014, Dr. Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum, published the Ethereum Yellow Paper and began the process of making Ethereum a reality. The yellow paper served as the technical reference and specification for the Ethereum Virtual Machine.

The Ethereum network began life with the Olympic testnet in early 2015, followed by the first live version known as the Frontier release in late July 2015. The second major release and current (at the time of writing) version of Ethereum is known as Homestead and was released in March 2016.

Ethereum Virtual Machine

Ethereum is an entirely new blockchain platform which gives developers the ability to create custom operations, or functions. The Ethereum Virtual Machine or EVM, runs on top of the Ethereum blockchain. You can think of the EVM as a distributed computer which runs simultaneously on all Ethereum nodes.

The EVM operates as a Turing complete machine. What on earth does that mean?A computer is Turing complete if it can be used to simulate the operations of any Turing machine. A Turing machine is one which can use a predefined set of rules to determine a result given a set of input variables. They are named after the famous English mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing. Alan Turing was instrumental in the development of early computers, such as the Colossus computer at Bletchley Park that was used to crack the Nazi Enigma cipher machine during WW2.

So in short, a Turing complete computer is one which can be programmed to solve any problem given an appropriate algorithm and sufficient time and memory.

In the case of Etherum, this machine operates simultaneously on all machines in the Ethereum network.

Why is this useful?

Enter decentralised applications or Dapps.

A traditional networked application runs on a centralised server (or collection of servers). That is, users all communicate with the central source which operates as an authority.

A Dapp works differently and is instead run simultaneously on all nodes operating as part of a blockchain network. No single node is considered an authority with trust instead being maintained through clever incentives. Refer to my article on blockchains for a more detailed explanation of blockchains and their benefits.

Originally, a decentralised application or Dapp, would need to be built into a custom crypto currency that was built specifically for that purpose.Ethereum makes it possible for Dapps to be programmed to run on the EVM and utilise the existing network. In this article we are going to explore a crypto currency built specifically around smart contracts, meet Ethereum.
\n
Ethereum is a decentralised platform designed to run smart contracts originally proposed by Vitalik Buterin. The early development team grew rapidly with initial founders including Mihai Alisie, Anthony Di Iorio, Charles Hoskinson, Amir Chetrit, Dr Gavin Wood, Jeffrey Wilcke and Joseph Lubin.Let's take a few steps back to where it all began...
\n
Birth of Ethereum
\n
Ethereum was initially proposed in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin, a Russian-Canadian programmer and crypto currency enthusiast. Vitalik discovered Bitcoin in 2012 at the tender age of 17 from his father, Dmitry Buterin. Dmitry is a fintech innovator and the founder of BlockGeeks.
\n
Vitalik began his crypto currency journey as a strong proponent of Bitcoin having originally written for Bitcoin Magazine. He argued that Bitcoin needed a scripting language to enable greater application development as opposed to the limited range of inbuilt operations. However, he failed to gain consensus from the Bitcoin community and so began to think about how else he could realise his dream of a fully programmable blockchain.
\n
In late 2013, Vitalik published a whitepaper proposing the development of a new blockchain called Ethereum. I highly recommend that you take the time to read the whitepaper as it remains a valuable source of information.
\n
Not long after this, Vitalik was awarded a $100k fellowship from famous venture capitalist Peter Thiel (cofounder of Paypal and Palantir) to develop and bring Ethereum to life.
\n
The Ethereum Foundation and Crowdsale
\n
Using the money from his fellowship, Vitalik co-founded the Ethereum Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Switzerland. The Ethereum Foundation is currently led by Ming Chan, Vitalik Buterin and Jeffrey Wilcke.
\n
To raise funds for the creation of the network, the Ethereum Foundation ran a fundraising crowd sale in the summer of 2014. Participants invested Bitcoin in exchange for Ether, the currency and fuel of the Ethereum network.
\n
Whereas there will only ever be 21 million bitcoins, there isn't currently a comparable hard limit on the maximum number of ether. This is dependent on the final agreed issuance model which is still to be determined but is widely expected to result in around 100 million ether ultimately being created. At the time of writing there are 93 million ether in existence with each worth c. $200 for a combined market cap of c. $19 billion.
\n
Alongside the successful completion of the Ether crowd sale, a development road map was prepared which included a series of stated development objectives.
\n
In April 2014, Dr. Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum, published the Ethereum Yellow Paper and began the process of making Ethereum a reality. The yellow paper served as the technical reference and specification for the Ethereum Virtual Machine.
\n
The Ethereum network began life with the Olympic testnet in early 2015, followed by the first live version known as the Frontier release in late July 2015. The second major release and current (at the time of writing) version of Ethereum is known as Homestead and was released in March 2016.
\n
Ethereum Virtual Machine
\n
Ethereum is an entirely new blockchain platform which gives developers the ability to create custom operations, or functions. The Ethereum Virtual Machine or EVM, runs on top of the Ethereum blockchain. You can think of the EVM as a distributed computer which runs simultaneously on all Ethereum nodes.
\n
The EVM operates as a Turing complete machine. What on earth does that mean?A computer is Turing complete if it can be used to simulate the operations of any Turing machine. A Turing machine is one which can use a predefined set of rules to determine a result given a set of input variables. They are named after the famous English mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing. Alan Turing was instrumental in the development of early computers, such as the Colossus computer at Bletchley Park that was used to crack the Nazi Enigma cipher machine during WW2.
\n
So in short, a Turing complete computer is one which can be programmed to solve any problem given an appropriate algorithm and sufficient time and memory.
\n
In the case of Etherum, this machine operates simultaneously on all machines in the Ethereum network.
\n
Why is this useful?
\n
Enter decentralised applications or Dapps.
\n
A traditional networked application runs on a centralised server (or collection of servers). That is, users all communicate with the central source which operates as an authority.
\n
A Dapp works differently and is instead run simultaneously on all nodes operating as part of a blockchain network. No single node is considered an authority with trust instead being maintained through clever incentives. Refer to my article on blockchains for a more detailed explanation of blockchains and their benefits.
\n
Originally, a decentralised application or Dapp, would need to be built into a custom crypto currency that was built specifically for that purpose.Ethereum makes it possible for Dapps to be programmed to run on the EVM and utilise the existing network. The advantage of this is that developers can build and deploy dapps far faster than ever before.
\n
Dapps built using Ethereum have immediate access to the rich ecosystem of supporting applications which have already been built to support the platform. Further, Dapps can be built to communicate with each other which further increases the utility of the overall network.
\n
The primary use case for Dapps are smart contracts which I covered in my previous post. In essence you can think of a smart contract as a digital contract which automatically enforces adherence to a predefined agreement.
\n
Unlike a traditional written contract, the language of a smart contract is computer code which can be written to run on the EVM.
\n
The majority of Ethereum applications are written in Solidity, an object oriented programming language used to develop smart contracts that run on the EVM.
\n
The DAO Revolution
\n
As well as enabling the creation of Dapps and smart contracts, collections of smart contracts can be pooled together to create Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAO) which can run on the Ethereum network.
\n
A DAO operates as an autonomous organisation which is decentralised and therefore has no single leader, or CEO. Instead, DAO's are governed by computer code contained within smart contracts. These contracts are intended to act in place of the traditional rules, processes and people which govern a traditional organisation. DAO's are collectively owned by all holders of their internal tokens with each token typically endowing its owner with voting rights. The utility of this voting power is governed by the smart contracts and can range from deciding to use DAO funds for a business contract through to implementing an update to the smart contract code itself.
\n
It is still early in the development of DAO's, however there has already been one high profile example, known as The DAO. This didn't end well and we will take a look at it's story and conclusion in a later post.
\n
Enterprise Ethereum Alliance
\n
The platform has begun to make waves in the fintech space, led in no small part by the creation of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance (EEA) by ConsenSys in February 2016.
\n
The EEA connects organisations all over the world with Ethereum subject matter experts and has the goal of accelerating the development of smart contract applications built using Ethereum.
\n
To date the EEA has proved incredibly attractive to large Fortune 500 companies with over 150 members at current count including companies such as Accenture, BP, Deloitte, Intel and Microsoft.
\n
The key takeaway is the sheer scale of development happening in the space right now which makes the future of the platform well worth watching.
\n
Join me next time as I explain the different wallets available for Ethereum.
\n
Until then my friends, all comments and questions are welcome :)
\n
If you’ve enjoyed this article, it would be my honour to have you as a regular reader.
\n
Yours, X
\n
Content: Xexr.com
\n
Image: Wikimedia
\n
Roger gets some air...
\n

\n
",
