| body | My stomach was aching, the classic sign that I had gotten distracted and forgotten to eat today. I had been watching the adult Drek training at the practice fields while my father was speaking with Fengral about my experience on the mountain. I was nervous about what I would find out, so I decided to distract myself with lunch. When I got to the long house, I got my quick meal. It was some sort of meat pie, and I ate it quickly. It was the first meal that I had eaten since the injury and I ate every bit. I hadn't realized how hungry I actually was, and wished, once again, that I could get another portion. That's when I remembered all of the smoked meat back at my father's hut from the cougar. On my way to the hut, I ran into my father, and we continued to walk to the hut together. After we got inside and I got my food, he told me what they had discussed. "Fengral thinks," he said pausing, looking for the right words, "well, he doesn't really know what to think, but he has one idea." "Yes?" I was beginning to grow impatient. "Well, did I ever tell you the story of your birth?" "No, what does that have to do with anything?" And so he told me the story of my birth, about how Fengral has used some powerful magic to soothe my mother's pain, and that It was much more powerful than Fengral had intended. "He told me that, as you were being brought into the world, he could feel the spirits fading from himself. Now he believe that he may have somehow transferred his power to you." I sat there, mouth hanging open, dumbly. How could that be possible? Fengral just told me about how no Drek has ever been able to hear the spirits, now he thinks that exactly what I've done? "Really?" I asked, sure he must be joking. "Yea really." I scanned his face, unable to understand to discover any emotion. "What's the matter?" I asked, finally. "We aren't sure what this will mean. From now on your training is on hold, and you will learn from Fengral." I tried to protest, but he raised a hand to stop me. "No, I don't want to hear it," he said sternly, "and I don't want you to talk to anyone in the village about it." I didn't even know what to say, in this one conversation my entire world was changed, and I didn't k is if it would be for the worse, or for the better. I had nothing less to say and soon it became obvious that he didn't either. We went to sleep, not speaking anymore that night. I lay awake for several hours, thinking about what the future had in store for me. I was nervous, but excited. Eventually I passed into sleep. My dreams that night were full of amazing and magical things. In one of them, I could command the power of flame, throwing it from my hand as easily as a rock. In another, I could stop someone in their tracks, simply by willing it. When I awoke that morning, I found that I was sad that they were only dreams. I didn't have any idea what my connection to the spirits would mean, but I certainly hoped it would be like those dreams. I hope Fengral can help me be that strong... After breakfast, I went to Fengral's hut, where I found him meditating. He didn't seem to notice that I was there, and I didn't want him to yell at me, so I sat on the other side of the small fire, waiting patiently. After what felt like an hour, I began to get very restless, and found my nails were getting long, so I bit them down to size, and filed them smoothly on my tusks, which were quite coarse. I was so caught up in the maintenance of my nails that I didn't realize I had been making noise. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Fengral staring at me, clearly annoyed that I had interrupted his meditation. "You needa learn to sit still, dammit." He barked, in his typical angry way. "How are you ever gonna hear the spirits when you can't be still for more than two seconds?" I knew he was probably right, but I was still a kid, what else did he expect? Still, I should try to focus more, and learn to be a bit more patient. "Come, sit. Listen with me." What does he mean, "Listen with me."? Listen to what, the fire? The outside? Even though I was confused, I went around to the other side of the fire and sat next to him. As I did, I watched him return to his meditating pose. Oh, he must mean to listen to the spirits. I tried to imitate him, sitting cross legged, with my eyes closed and hands folded in my lap. I tried to listen for something, unsure of how to hear the spirits. I strained to hear them, but the longer I sat there, the more my mind became bored. I felt at my fingernails. Feeling several edges that I had missed. I felt an itch on my forehead, and struggled to ignore it, but the longer I tried to ignore it, the worse it got. Suddenly I couldn't take it anymore, and quickly reached up to scratch it. "Dammit, boy. It's been 5 minutes." "Sorry." He didn't respond, closing his eyes again. I did the same. As I continued my struggle to be patient,my mind began to wander again. This time I began to think about the attack in the mountains, when I had first heard the spirits. What had been different between then and now. Maybe it was because I was in danger, or because I had been in the mountains. Then I had a thought. Maybe it's because I was so focused. I remember focusing hard on the spear. Ready to throw it, like my father had. My mind usually wanders so much that I don't focus on any one thing for more than a few minutes. I decided that I would try to focus on the fire, crackling in front of me. I began to think again, about the first time I had heard the spirits. The power of the message that I had felt. It would be wrong to say that I actually heard anything, it was as if my own mind had been yelling at me. How could my own mind know about the danger before my eyes had seen it or my ears had heard it? I startled myself when I realized how quickly I had lost my concentration in the fire. This is going to be so much harder than I thought… We sat there for hours, every day. It never seemed to get any easier, but Fengral said he thought I was getting better at being patient. I assume he was just trying to make me feel better because I couldn't see it. Weeks went by, and several times I could have sworn that I was beginning to feel something, but we always seemed to have an interruption that would break my concentration. My shoulder had healed enough that I could began running with my father in the mornings, before I went to Fengral’s. I found that meditation after exercise was much easier, without all the built up energy. One day, near the end of summer, while meditating in Fengral’s hut, I felt it. At first I didn't realize what was happening. It was hardly noticeable. The crackling of the fire stopped, and the sounds of the outside began to fade away, and I heard something else. Again, to say that I could ‘hear’ it wouldn't be accurate. I could feel it in my mind, the whispering of thousands of beings. The spirits were strange, from the lectures Fengral had given me, it should have felt familiar, like Listening to the chatter of Orks in the longhouse during a meal, but it was much different. I felt like I was surrounded by a dense forest, and all around me were the sounds of that forest. The songs of birds, the chirping and buzzing of bugs, the growling of cats, the howling of wolves. I never actually heard these sounds though, but felt them in my mind. I felt a hand on my back, opening my eyes, I saw that it was Fengral. I also noticed that it was dark outside. Wasn't it just barely noon? “You did it?” It wasn't really a question, he knew that I had felt something. “I think so,” I said, though I wasn't sure. I had certainly felt something, but was it the spirits that I was supposed to be listening for? “It felt,” I paused, searching for the right words, “different, than you said it would.” “Whadya mean?” “You said it would be like listening to the conversations at meal times, but it wasn't,” I paused again, having difficulty describing it, “it sounded more like animals.” When I said that, he looked at me like I was trying I make a joke, but failing horribly. “Are you sure?” He asked, obviously not sure what to think. “Yea, like a million animals around me in a forest.” “I've never heard of anythin like that.” Great, another thing to make me different. The next day, when I came to Fengral’s hut, he wasn't meditating like normal, but packing a travel bag. He explained an idea that he had last night, after I had left. “When I meditate, I do it here, because of the generations of Orken that have lived and died here. That makes my connection stronger.” So if i’m listening to animals… “... we should go to the mountains.” He finished saying, competing my thought. “I'll go pack!” “Pack as much as you can, we ain't gonna be back for a while.” I ran of toward to the practice fields first, toward where I knew I would find my father, to tell him the plan. He was worried, and I could understand why. Last time we were in the mountains was when I was attacked, but he didn't protest. Following me back to the hut, he helped me pack. I filled the majority of my pack with smoked meats and a couple filled water skins, as well as a change of clothes. I said goodbye to my father, and began to head out. Before I left, he stopped me, and handed me a spear. I thanked him, and left. Fengral and I were heading toward the western gate of the village, toward the mountains. Many Orks watched us, interested in such a strange change in the daily routines. As we exited the village, I felt a surge of excitement. When I returned to this village, I would be changed, I was somehow sure of it. We hiked far into the mountains, further than I had ever gone. Fengral said he thought that it would be more effective, the further in they were which made sense to me. We hiked until nightfall, and made a small camp. Fengral taught me to make a small fire, and we used our spare hides for sleep. Luckily it was still late summer, and therefore it was quite warm outside. We hiked for several more days, until we reached a small lake at the bottom of a waterfall. Near the lake was a flat enough area for us to set up a decent camp. We spent several days gathering setting up a small, makeshift shelter, big enough for the two of us and a fire, with a chimney at the top. Then we dug two fire pits, a small one inside, and a large one outside. We still had plenty of food for a couple weeks, and if we spent some time gathering each day, we would have plenty to last us until we went home. | body | After father finished his meal, and was ready to go, he got up and began to head toward the door, I followed. After getting the chance to rest my legs, I was once again excited to find out what was next. We stopped at the hut, and grabbed an axe. Then, we walked through the village, but not toward the practice fields. Instead, we were heading toward the west entrance of the village. Where are we going? As we approached the western gate, father spoke up. "If i'm going to teach you to hunt, we're going to need some weapons." At his words, my mind shattered. I'm gonna be making weapons? I'm gonna learn to hunt? Awesome! I can't believe it, obviously this sort of thing was always going to be my job, but I guess I never really believed it. The excitement overwhelmed me. I was barely able to keep myself together as we exited the village. Fortunately for my legs, we didn't have to walk far. We stopped at the edge of some trees where there was some shade to sit under. "When we hunt, we usually use bows or spears. I prefer a bow because it has more distance, and use a knife if the animal attacks and gets too close." His hand went to his calf where his knife was strapped to his leg and he unsheathed it. It was straight, with no guard. The blade itself was about 6 or so inches long. The handle was some sort of leather wrapped tightly and tied with a mess of sinew. Overall, it was simple, yet effective. "I'm going to help you make one of each so that you can see what you like best, sound good?" "Yes Sir!" We spent several hours walking throughout the trees, gathering the necessary resources to craft a bow, a few arrows, and a spear. Finding the saplings was my job, while my father was looking for a rocks to make arrowheads and the tip of the spear. He gave me the axe that he had brought and told me to cut as close to the bottom of the sapling as I could. It took me quite a while to find some that would be suitable, but eventually I found a few and brought them back to the place that we had been resting earlier. When I arrived, I found father, chipping at some small black rocks. He explained that they were flint, and were easy to shape which is why he was using them. We have a blacksmith in our village that can make these things out of iron and other metals, but this works in a pinch. While he was finishing on the tips, he had me cut two notches, one in either end of one of the saplings, and one notch in the other sapling. While cutting the final notch, the axe slipped off the side, almost catching me in the hand. I jumped back, dropping the axe and clutching my hand. "Are you okay?" My father sad, rushing to check on my hand. "I think so," I was checking my hand for a cut, "Just got scared is all." "You need to be more careful, this isn't all fun and games anymore." I agreed, and then we finished up our respective jobs and he pulled out some sinew from a puch he had hidden in his loincloth. Fitting the larger of the stones into the sapling with one notch, he began wrapping the sinew around it, pulling it as tightly as he could. It didn't take long, and he tied it off at the end of the sinew. After giving it a few light tosses in the air, he threw it past me, when I turned around to see where it had gone, I saw that it was stuck into a tree, about forty feet behind me. Wow... He threw that so hard... "Well? What do you think?" He asked, as he walked over to retrieve the spear. "Awesome!" I was astonished. He walked back over and handed the spear to me, "Try it a few times, I'll finish the arrows." I turned to face the direction that he had thrown the spear, tossing the spear into the air a few times to get a feel for the weight, I threw it. The spear went toppling end over end for about ten feet before slamming sideways into a tree. Whoops... Turning around, I heard my father, struggling to contain his laughter, attaching an arrowhead to a stick. Feeling a bit upset, I walked over to where the spear had landed and got ready to throw it again. As I got ready to throw the spear again, doing the same thing that I had seen my father do, I felt something, or maybe I heard it? It was the strangest thing, and I couldn't describe it. It was almost like something was shouting at me, and I could feel the power of it, but I didn't know where it was coming from. I looked over at my father, still attaching rocks to sticks. Then I looked around, not seeing anything, I looked up. Too late. A huge brown cougar leaped down from the tree above me, catching my shoulder in its mouth. I could feel it massive teeth ripping into my flesh. I fell, crying out. In a moment, it was attempting to pin me, but luckily I had held onto the spear and it was in between the cat and myself. I tried to push the spear up, into the armpits of my foe. It worked, and the cat fell onto me. All of the sudden I felt the weight of the cat call to the side, and noticed my father, leaping through the air like a wolf, knife in hand, tackling the creature. His right hand, wielding the knife, had plunged it deep into the creature's side, while his left arm had wrapped itself firmly around its neck. I woke up sometime later. What just happened? I was in my bed, inside of my father's hut. Outside I could see that it was dark, but inside the hut was lit by a fire at the center. I could feel the pain in my left shoulder. Grabbing up with my right hand, I felt that it was wrapped in bandages. I tried to move my left arm. So much pain. I woke up sometime later. Someone else was in the hut with me. Not my father, too small, and with the light streaming in from behind them, I could only make out the silhouette. "'Bout time," said a shaky, old voice. "People were startin to doubt me!" It was Fengral, the village shaman. "Don't move!" He barked, as I attempted to sit up. "That shoulder is nasty," he said, pointing to a pile of bloody bandages on the ground. "I gotta rewrap it quickly to keep it clean." I quickly did as he said, and laid back down. As long as I wasn't moving, the pain in my shoulder was only a dull ache, when I moved it last time, it felt like someone had stuck a bar through my shoulder and pulled it like a lever. That cat really messed me up. I suddenly realized that I hadn't seen my father since the attack. "Is my father ok?" I asked in a panic, worried that he had been injured by the same animal. "He's just fine," said the old, cranky shaman, "barely even scratched." I sighed from relief Thank the Great Mother "What about me?" I motioned to my shoulder, "Will this heal ok?" "You got lucky! The cat bit deep, but didn't tear ." More relief. As Fengral carefully wrapped my shoulder, I wish I was unconscious again. The pain was immense, but I was thankful that it would heal. I spent the rest of that day, and the next couple, trapped in the hut, resting. My father would bring me food at meal times nothin important. Yea, Lucky... Wishing I was alone again, I nodded, but said nothing. He must have taken the hint though, because he began to head toward the exit. "Thanks, Fengral." He made a gesture, as if to say, "It's nothin," and left the tent. It was hours before my father returned to the tent, food in hand. I had been lying awake for a while at that point. Having slept for most of the last 24 hours, I wasn't tired in the least, but I was bored. Very bored. "Father!" I yelled, much louder than I meant to. "Threk!" He was completely unfazed by my yell, thankfully. "How are you feeling?" He was busying around the hut, putting things away, and grabbing some utensils for the food. "Good, as long as I don't move my shoulder at all, Fengral says it will heal normal." "Good," He said, sitting at the edge of my bed, handing me the food. I hadn't realized how hungry I had become. The feeling in my shoulder was to great that I didn't even notice the ache in my stomach. "Thank you, Father," It wasn't a great meal, grilled pork, corn, and a bit of bread, and it was cold, but it would sate the roar in my belly. "I know you don't want to hear this," he said, watching me eat, "but there isn't going to be anymore training until that shoulder is fully healed." "It'll be weeks though!" "It's for your own good," I knew he was right, but I was upset all the same, "Fengral is going to watch over you while I am out for the day." I really didn't like that idea. The old Orc always seemed so strange, but it was better than being alone all the time until Father got home. So I conceded, not wanting to upset him. When I finished eating, he quietly cleaned up, and prepared for bed. I didn't fall asleep until hours later, my mind was too restless, and I hated that cougar that had attacked. Not because it attacked me, but because it was now wasting my time that could be spent training. "body": "After father finished his meal, and was ready to go, he got up and began to head toward the door, I followed. After getting the chance to rest my legs, I was once again excited to find out what was next. We stopped at the hut, and grabbed an axe. Then, we walked through the village, but not toward the practice fields. Instead, we were heading toward the west entrance of the village.\n\nWhere are we going?\n\nAs we approached the western gate, father spoke up. \"If i'm going to teach you to hunt, we're going to need some weapons.\" At his words, my mind shattered.\n\nI'm gonna be making weapons? I'm gonna learn to hunt? Awesome!\n\nI can't believe it, obviously this sort of thing was always going to be my job, but I guess I never really believed it. The excitement overwhelmed me. I was barely able to keep myself together as we exited the village.\n\nFortunately for my legs, we didn't have to walk far. We stopped at the edge of some trees where there was some shade to sit under.\n\n\"When we hunt, we usually use bows or spears. I prefer a bow because it has more distance, and use a knife if the animal attacks and gets too close.\" His hand went to his calf where his knife was strapped to his leg and he unsheathed it. It was straight, with no guard. The blade itself was about 6 or so inches long. The handle was some sort of leather wrapped tightly and tied with a mess of sinew. Overall, it was simple, yet effective.\n\n\"I'm going to help you make one of each so that you can see what you like best, sound good?\"\n\n\"Yes Sir!\"\n\nWe spent several hours walking throughout the trees, gathering the necessary resources to craft a bow, a few arrows, and a spear. We have a blacksmith in our village that can make these things out of iron and other metals, but this works in a pinch.\n\nWhile he was finishing on the tips, he had me cut two notches, one in either end of one of the saplings, and one notch in the other sapling. While cutting the final notch, the axe slipped off the side, almost catching me in the hand. I jumped back, dropping the axe and clutching my hand.\n\n\"Are you okay?\" My father sad, rushing to check on my hand.\n\n\"I think so,\" I was checking my hand for a cut, \"Just got scared is all.\"\n\n\"You need to be more careful, this isn't all fun and games anymore.\"\n\nI agreed, and then we finished up our respective jobs and he pulled out some sinew from a puch he had hidden in his loincloth. Fitting the larger of the stones into the sapling with one notch, he began wrapping the sinew around it, pulling it as tightly as he could. It didn't take long, and he tied it off at the end of the sinew. After giving it a few light tosses in the air, he threw it past me, when I turned around to see where it had gone, I saw that it was stuck into a tree, about forty feet behind me.\n\nWow... He threw that so hard...\n\n\"Well? What do you think?\" He asked, as he walked over to retrieve the spear.\n\n\"Awesome!\" I was astonished.\n\nHe walked back over and handed the spear to me, \"Try it a few times, I'll finish the arrows.\"\n\nI turned to face the direction that he had thrown the spear, tossing the spear into the air a few times to get a feel for the weight, I threw it. The spear went toppling end over end for about ten feet before slamming sideways into a tree.\n\nWhoops...\n\nTurning around, I heard my father, struggling to contain his laughter, attaching an arrowhead to a stick. Too late.\n\nA huge brown cougar leaped down from the tree above me, catching my shoulder in its mouth. All of the sudden I felt the weight of the cat call to the side, and noticed my father, leaping through the air like a wolf, knife in hand, tackling the creature. | title | Awakening Part IV |
| body | I know that some of you are really enjoying this so I will keep updating for you! I awoke the next day in panic. I don't exactly know why. Maybe it was a dream I was having. As my eyes began to focus on my surroundings, I realized I wasn't in my father's hut, I was in someone else's. I was, however, still in my bed. I couldn't recognize anything that would give away whose it was, but I could guess that it was Fengral's. Probably moved me this morning while I was asleep. It took me several minutes of exploring my surroundings before I notice the small, old shaman, sitting on the ground near the fire. He looked odd as he sat there, cross legged, and silent. His eyes were closed and we hadn't seemed to notice I was awake, despite the suddenness with which I woke. So I watched him curiously. How long is he gonna stay like that? I watched him like that, silent and unmoving with his eyes closed, for at least another hour before getting the nerve to speak up. "Good morning," I said quietly, my voice cracking from nervousness. There was no response from the old shaman. Thinking he must not have heard me, I repeated myself, slightly louder, "Good mo-" "I heard you the first time!" The shaman barked in his old voice, without opening his eyes, or moving anymore than it took to say the words. "Can't you see I'm doing somethin?" What is he doing? He's just sitting there... Confused, and a little angry, I said, "You're just sitting there." His eyes snapped open, "You stupid! Can't you see i'm meditatin?" It wasn't really a question. But I didn't understand what he meant. "What is meditatin?" I asked, honestly. "Ain't you never seen a man meditatin before?" "No," I replied, still confused. The shaman seemed to have calmed down, "When i'm meditatin, im listenin' to the spirits, and the earth." "You can hear spirits? What do they say?" "They don't really 'say' anythin," he said, emphasizing the word, "Its really more of a feelin. Same with the earth. I can feel it around me, like it was my arms, or my hair. I didn't really know how to respond to that. The old man sounded crazy to me, but other people seemed to believe in his stories. As a child, I heard stories of things that the shaman had done. They say that he could do amazing things, things that normal people couldn't do. "Is it true, what they say about you?" I asked, letting my curiosity get the better of me. "What do they say about me?" He asked, glaring, with the faintest frown forming on his lips. "That you can do things," I said, my voice starting to shake a little. "Magical things, that normal people can't do." "It used to be true, " he said, as his frown began to grow, and his eyes fell. "I havn't been able to do that sort of thing in many years." "Why not?" I said, almost afraid to ask. " I was performing a ritual that demanded too much of myself." He rose to his feet. "It worked, but ever since that time, my connection to the spirits has gotten weak, and continues to weaken even more." I wasn't sure why, but for some reason I believed him. Though I had never witnessed anything like that, he didn't seem to be lying. Then I remembered that moment in the forest, before the cougar had attacked me. Were those spirits? Were they trying to warn me about the cougar? I realized that I had been sitting quietly for too long when the shaman started to look at me strangely. "Are you ok boy?" He asked sincerely, "You look like your gonna be sick." "Fengral," I began, ignoring what he had said, "Can everyone hear the spirits?" "No boy, only few, and only Orks. No Drek could ever feel the spirits." He seemed certain of this, but I was sure that it couldn't have been anything else. "The humans have magics of their own, but they are dark, unnatural things." He said this with a hint of disgust in his voice. I hadn't heard of that either. I didn't know much about humans at all, actually. I suddenly forgot what I was going to say as my mind turned to think about the humans. In all of my life, I had only seen one group of humans, and I was very young when it had happened. They had been brought into the camp by a group of Drek hunters, that had stumbled across their camp in the mountains. The Chieftan took their things, and let the humans go, scaring them off, and sending them running east, toward the human settlements. Back in those days there were few humans, but caravans from other tribes had told us that the humans were building a great big village, and that there were many of them. "Are the humans bad?" I asked, honestly. "That answer," the shaman replied, "I cannot know. No one can know who is good and who is bad. But I fear they will soon become our enemies." He continued, "Long ago, before many of this tribe were born, we traded freely with the passin human travelers. They were afraid of us at first, but when we showed them no harm, they began to become friendly. Some of the other Orken tribes were less kind, and attacked the humans that passed their camp. This outraged the humans, and many of them would attack us when they caught a lone Drek huntin, or an Ork wanderin. Our tribe was greatly affected by them, but long ago they stopped coming, Probably because they did not want to fight us anymore. I fear that as they continue to grow in number, they will expand to the west, and we will be forced to fight, for no Orken would chose to run." He took a long breath, a bit winded from his story. "But humans are weak!" "A couple of them, sure. Your father could probably take out 5 or 6 of them on his own, but the humans are many, and they are all one tribe." I understood what he meant by that. The humans would fight together, but the Orken tribes would never work together to fight the humans. "We don't stand a chance!" I said, getting emotional. Fengral began to laugh, "Don't you worry about that, boy. I'm just a ranting old man, pay me no mind." This didn't ease my fears. What he said made sense, and I wanted to remember to ask father about it when I saw him. Suddenly, I realized that it was probably at least mid-day, and I hadn't eaten yet. Fengral seemed to know what I was thinking, and got up to grab a loaf of bread and some cheese from his table. It wasn't often that I got to eat cheese, and I wondered where he had gotten it, but instead of asking questions, I simply said thank you, and began to eat it. As I ate, I watched Fengral return to his meditation, and thought about what I had felt in the forest. Were those spirits? Were they warning me about the cougar? Couldn't have been, Fengral said that no Drek can hear the spirits, but then what else could it be? I was afraid to ask Fengral for fear of him laughing at me and thinking that I was crazy. But i'm not crazy. I definitely felt it! I decided that I would talk to my father about it first, before I told anyone else. Surely he would have some idea what happened, he might have even felt it. I quickly became bored, and decided to take a nap, and hopefully when I wake up, my father will have returned. Later that day, I woke up, or rather, I was woken up, by my father. Outside it looked like it was starting to get dark. "Morning!" He said, in his usual cheer. Morning? How could I have slept that long? "Is it really morning already?" Panicking slightly. "Yea, you didn't even wake up when I moved you back to the hut last night." I didn't even realize that we were back in my father's hut. I looked around and noticed something new. There was a cougar pelt hanging on a rack near the fire, drying. "Is that..." My voice trailed off. "Yep," He smiled, "Thought you might want it, could make some fine clothes. Very tough." He was right, and it would make me stand out, most just had deer hide. They were much more common, and easier to take down. It the other Drek children would be jealous, and that made me excited. "Thank you!" I said, excitedly. "Fengral said that you should be ok to get up and walk around today, wanna get out?" "Finally!" I said, excited to be free of this prison. "Well then, let's go get breakfast." After breakfast, we walked out to the practice fields, on the way there, I decided to ask about the spirits that I heard in the mountain. "Do you know anything about spirits?" I asked "Not much, I know that Fengral can hear them, and that he has used them to do impossible things. Did you talk to him about it while you were there?" "He told me about meditating, and about listening to spirits." "Do you believe him?" "I do." "Good," He smiled his warm smile, "because it's true, and i've seen it." I couldn't believe it. Why hasn't he told me this before? Maybe he knew more about it than I thought. "What did you see him do?" He told me the story of my birth, and how Fengral had used a powerful piece of magic to soothe my mother's pain, and how it had affected him. He told me that it was the last time he had ever seen Fengral do any magic. That must be the magic that Fengral told me about, that used too much of his strength and left him unable to do magic anymore. When he finished his story, he wiped a few tears from his eyes, and look at me, waiting for my response. "Have you ever heard of a Drek that could hear the spirits?" "I have never heard of anything like that," he said, thinking, "but stranger things have happened. Why do you ask?" I decided to be honest with him, after all I was very curious and wanted answers. "When we were in the forest, and I was attacked by the cougar, I felt a strange feeling. Like someone was trying to warn me. It was loud, and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. When Fengral told me about what the spirits feel like, I realized it must have been the same thing." I realized I hadn't taken a breath in a while, and I stopped talking to take a long breath in. He didn't say anything, but was obviously thinking hard about something. "Do you think I could have heard the spirits? Could they have warned me about the cougar?" "Anything is possible, I suppose." He paused, continuing to think for a minute, "I will talk to Fengral about it today." This excited me, I don't know what it would mean for me to have a connection to the spirits, but I am excited find out. "body": "I know that some of you are really enjoying this so I will keep updating for you!\n\n\nI awoke the next day in panic. I don't exactly know why. Maybe it was a dream I was having. As my eyes began to focus on my surroundings, I realized I wasn't in my father's hut, I was in someone else's. I was, however, still in my bed. I couldn't recognize anything that would give away whose it was, but I could guess that it was Fengral's.\n\nProbably moved me this morning while I was asleep.\n\nIt took me several minutes of exploring my surroundings before I notice the small, old shaman, sitting on the ground near the fire. He looked odd as he sat there, cross legged, and silent. His eyes were closed and we hadn't seemed to notice I was awake, despite the suddenness with which I woke. So I watched him curiously.\n\nHow long is he gonna stay like that?\n\nI watched him like that, silent and unmoving with his eyes closed, for at least another hour before getting the nerve to speak up.\n\n\"Good morning,\" I said quietly, my voice cracking from nervousness. There was no response from the old shaman. Thinking he must not have heard me, I repeated myself, slightly louder, \"Good mo-\"\n\n\"I heard you the first time!\" The shaman barked in his old voice, without opening his eyes, or moving anymore than it took to say the words. \"Can't you see I'm doing somethin?\"\n\nWhat is he doing? He's just sitting there...\n\nConfused, and a little angry, I said, \"You're just sitting there.\"\n\nHis eyes snapped open, \"You stupid! Can't you see i'm meditatin?\" It wasn't really a question. But I didn't understand what he meant.\n\n\"What is meditatin?\" I asked, honestly.\n\n\"Ain't you never seen a man meditatin before?\"\n\n\"No,\" I replied, still confused.\n\nThe shaman seemed to have calmed down, \"When i'm meditatin, im listenin' to the spirits, and the earth.\"\n\n\"You can hear spirits? What do they say?\"\n\n\"They don't really 'say' anythin,\" he said, emphasizing the word, \"Its really more of a feelin. Same with the earth. I can feel it around me, like it was my arms, or my hair.\n\nI didn't really know how to respond to that. The old man sounded crazy to me, but other people seemed to believe in his stories. As a child, I heard stories of things that the shaman had done. They say that he could do amazing things, things that normal people couldn't do.\n\n\"Is it true, what they say about you?\" I asked, letting my curiosity get the better of me.\n\n\"What do they say about me?\" He asked, glaring, with the faintest frown forming on his lips.\n\n\"That you can do things,\" I said, my voice starting to shake a little. \"Magical things, that normal people can't do.\"\n\n\"It used to be true, \" he said, as his frown began to grow, and his eyes fell. \"I havn't been able to do that sort of thing in many years.\"\n\n\"Why not?\" I said, almost afraid to ask.\n\n\" I was performing a ritual that demanded too much of myself.\" He rose to his feet. \"It worked, but ever since that time, my connection to the spirits has gotten weak, and continues to weaken even more.\"\n\nI wasn't sure why, but for some reason I believed him. Though I had never witnessed anything like that, he didn't seem to be lying. Then I remembered that moment in the forest, before the cougar had attacked me.\n\nWere those spirits? Were they trying to warn me about the cougar?\n\nI realized that I had been sitting quietly for too long when the shaman started to look at me strangely.\n\n\"Are you ok boy?\" He asked sincerely, \"You look like your gonna be sick.\"\n\n\"Fengral,\" I began, ignoring what he had said, \"Can everyone hear the spirits?\"\n\n\"No boy, only few, and only Orks. No Drek could ever feel the spirits.\" He seemed certain of this, but I was sure that it couldn't have been anything else. \"The humans have magics of their own, but they are dark, unnatural things.\" He said this with a hint of disgust in his voice. I hadn't heard of that either. I didn't know much about humans at all, actually.\n\nI suddenly forgot what I was going to say as my mind turned to think about the humans.\n\nIn all of my life, I had only seen one group of humans, and I was very young when it had happened. They had been brought into the camp by a group of Drek hunters, that had stumbled across their camp in the mountains. The Chieftan took their things, and let the humans go, scaring them off, and sending them running east, toward the human settlements. Back in those days there were few humans, but caravans from other tribes had told us that the humans were building a great big village, and that there were many of them.\n\n\"Are the humans bad?\" I asked, honestly.\n\n\"That answer,\" the shaman replied, \"I cannot know. No one can know who is good and who is bad. But I fear they will soon become our enemies.\" He continued, \"Long ago, before many of this tribe were born, we traded freely with the passin human travelers.
