      "body": "我的母亲成为了中国最后一代裹脚的女性。\n\n\n\n＊＊＊\n\n![小脚-01.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUJzLctEBS6pATcsbS4oYKHsB9AprYq2FNjqurrzsUTxi/%E5%B0%8F%E8%84%9A-01.jpg)\n\n\n\n我的家人\n\n\n\n       我的母亲李莲琴是农民，家庭妇女，小脚夫人。清朝时代的女孩子到了两三岁就裹脚了，因为脚趾全被布带绷弯到脚底，她平时走路重心全部放在脚后跟上。当时女孩子如果不裹脚就会被看作粗鲁、不淑女，所以会嫁不出去。比我母亲年轻的女人，像我的阿姨们，裹脚就裹得轻。直到最后孙中山上台，执行“放开脚”政策，我母亲便成为了中国最后一代裹脚的女性。\n\n       政府为了压制“小脚”，不定期会到家家户户检查女孩子的脚，同时不会放过脚已定型的小脚女人－－凡是女性，就不许裹脚。所以我母亲就像捉迷藏一样，人家来了就躲起来，或脚上套上大鞋忽悠过检查，人家走了就又裹了起来。\n\n       逐渐，商店里的尖头小鞋越来越难买到，街上的年轻女性都穿着大鞋，唯独有一批老人，始终一小步一小步地向前蹭着。\n\n       我的父亲两岁就没有了父亲。那时候的人结婚早，人们十八九岁就结婚，所以我的爷爷留下了两个孩子，我父亲是老二。他们的生活都靠我的奶奶缝衣服养活。我的老爷，也就是我父亲的爷爷，让我父亲和伯伯跟着村里一个能干的农民学农活，不要收入，只要学到人家的种地技术。经过多年的锻炼，父亲学会了种地，在村里也是一个种地好手。在我的印象中，父亲出门总是背着一个粪篓，手拿粪叉，捡路边的牛驴粪。他经常说，“种地不上粪，一年瞎胡混。”播种时撒种子也十分重要，讲究技术，要撒的匀，不能一撮一撮的。\n\n       我的父亲没有文化。他写“孟”字，底下是个田字。他读过夜校，晚上点一个煤油灯，在昏昏暗暗、忽悠忽悠的光线下上课，黑板上十几个字其实看不清，所以连自己的姓都不会写。不过他很重视孩子们学文化，后来哪怕赚钱再辛苦也供我们读书。\n\n       49年后，铁道部到老解放区招工，测试文化，我的二姐就是因为读完了高小，通过了考试被录取后，离开了农村。她如果没有文化，根本不可能离开山村。姐姐一出去工作，就激励了我们这些弟弟妹妹，她用她的收入和我父亲的辛劳所得供弟弟妹妹们读书。后来，我的哥哥和我都考上了大学，我的妹妹却赶上了文化大革命，只读完了初中，留在了农村。\n\n       我们家加上我有七个孩子，大姐死于难产，比我小的两个弟弟很小就夭折了。有一个弟弟是在三四岁时因为一直拉稀闹肚子，没有有效的医药和足够的营养，就早早地离开了我们。我唯一对弟弟记忆犹新的事还是当年，我领着他去河滩边玩，每当我在沙上挖好了坑，弟弟就会嘻嘻哈哈地来捣乱，踢沙土将坑填上。我怎么会让他糟蹋自己辛辛苦苦的劳动成果呢，一气之下，抓起一把沙土就往他身上甩。谁知，沙土偏偏打进了他的眼睛。\n\n       我们家的主要生活来源是就是靠我父亲种地，不是卖粮食，只是种别人家的地，交了租子后还有一部分粮食自己吃。那时候农民卖粮食的不多，最多卖一点以后买一点油来点灯还有其他一点生活必用品。后来我们家有了自己的地。因为我有三个爷爷（爷爷和他的两个弟弟），我的爷爷死的最早，后两个爷爷相继也没有活多大年龄，他们只生了女儿，在他们死后，地不能由已出嫁的女儿继承，所以就由我父亲继承了。我父亲每年有了收成后，就给我的奶奶们分粮食。\n\n       我们所在的平阳村是一个人口大村，因此平日每隔几天村里就会举办集市，三里五乡的人们会把自己养的猪、驴、盐、醋，布等等摆放在路上，大家以物换物。我最常去交换的就是布，都是家织布，由于织布机不够宽，织出来的布也就一尺多宽，可是长度不限。买了布回家就做裤子，一条布做一个裤腿，最后用碎布将两个裤管缝起来。纺线织布是女子的必修技能，每当我母亲纺线到一半去做饭时，我就会去试着学捣乱，试着学着就模仿会了。那时候哪怕是过年，家里也不会给我们做新衣服。我们还会用麦秸秆编长长的麻花绳，母亲就拿我们编好的绳子一圈一圈地缝成草帽，带到集市上去卖。卖了以后买了布，她便给我们做衣服－－这可是用我们的劳动换来的。\n\n       过年的时候，我姐姐会去买两斤肉，大家一起吃一顿饺子。平时吃不到肉，只有吃糠咽菜：糠就是磨米以后剩下的壳，菜就是野菜树叶。我们也吃红皮山芋，把它磨成面，做面条、蒸馒头。家里没有多少粮食吃，一般就是种山芋，产量高。所以个人种地，要供六七口子人生活。还是比较困难的。",

      "body": "The project “Lost” is aimed to reflect a common state of mindset that recurs throughout different stages of the lifetime. Precisely, it was my state of mindset before planning this art piece, of having too many ideas, but due to limited ability and lack of experience, I can’t achieve my goals, eventually leaving me with no directions. \n\nWhat inspired me is this painful feeling of getting lost, which encouraged me to overcome this stage by substantiating it through tangible elements. This is my IGCSE Visual Art coursework from the previous school year, basically showcasing how people hide their true feelings.\n\nI often find many people and myself attempting to be \"lazy”: we don't express our true feelings but often we obey the mainstream. Speaking about myself, I can’t even count how many opportunities I have lost just because I changed my mind due to the attitudes and opinions of others. I called myself and the similar people, the disguiser, because we pretend to be happy and get along with it.\n\nMy final outcome is a 2.5 Dimension sculpture with lego pieces in-between each layer to separate them.       "body": "*Fuping is a county of Hebei province, sharing a boundary with Shanxi province. It’s located in the mountainous region, as one of the crucial Communist strongholds of China and a war theater.   In October 1937, Meng Yu’en was born in a farming family in Pingyang village, Fuping. She has two big sisters and a big brother. Pingyang village, a hilly area, is at the northern corner of Fuping. At the South-Eastern corner of Fuping located Quyang county. Due to its vast flatland, Quyang was conquered by the Japanese army.*\n\n**Yu’en recalled three times of escape during her childhood that is unforgettable:**\n\nWhen I was old enough to start remembering things, our family no longer lived in the village.\n\nThere’s always a person, like a sentry, who stood on the hill. Every time the Japanese appeared approaching towards our village, the sentry would chop off a tree that falls and points out the location of the Japanese. We then would run along the opposite direction. Not only all of the people were escaping, but we also brought our donkeys that had blankets and food all piled up on their backs. Young kids like me were held in arms; old people were pushed to walk.\n\nWe were nomadic with no homes; on the other hand, every place we’d escaped to was our home. Sometimes when we arrived at a village, we could finally sleep with a ceiling on top of us, and cook using the family’s pots. When we were gazing at the pot, dying to have a mouth full of warm rice, and finally received a bowl of… “The Japanese is coming!” Crowds of people were gushing towards a direction. We hurriedly joined them and pulled our donkey with us, leaving several bowls of rice on the table. When the Japanese arrived the rice probably was still steamy. They sure would eat it. \n\nLuckily it’s autumn, there were plenty of red date trees among the mountains. We ate dates, sometimes we picked corns or sweet potatoes.\n\n**1**\n\nOnce we escaped to Zhaidi village, an enemy zone in Quyang. I was only five years old, even played outside of the house. There’s one day when we heard Japanese people yelling villagers to come to the public yard to have a “meeting”. The person who yelled in Chinese must be a traitor that aimed to expose villagers in order to find the People’s Liberation soldiers— traitors were prevalent, who betrayed their country to protect their own lives.\n\nWe knew that despite we weren’t Zhaidi villagers, in fact,  we are just momentarily staying at this house, we couldn’t be discovered by them. Thankfully, there’s a donkey room at the back of the family’s yard. \n\nWhen we walked through the entrance, we faced a line of donkeys, but there’s another shed made of wood and hay whose door align with the entrance on the right. They walked into the donkey room and saw the donkeys peacefully chewing the oat sheaf with their head slightly tilted towards this unexpected visit. The donkeys saved us. They didn’t suspect people would be hiding inside the donkey room since they would never guess that there’s another room hiding right beside the door. \n\nWe hid there for a whole day.\n\nThose came to the public yard was killed. Among the victims lied a neighbor of us back in the Pingyang village, the oldest of the three brothers. The Japanese gathered firewood, pushing those people into the fire to eliminate potential cadres and China’s Liberal soldiers. People still ran out from the fire, then they would shoot them. We all knew that there’s no China’s Liberal soldiers in the village, but if they said you are, then death would be unavoidable. I guess because the traitor realized that our neighbor wasn’t from Zhaidi village, so nominated him to suffer.\n\n**2**\nBecause of constant hunger, fatigue, and chaos, the plague was common and it spread from family to family. Our family soon became the sufferer. Since we sometimes escaped to the cave that was built by us on the hill, and would contemporarily live in there, I was left behind in the cave once when all my family members ran away. The structure of the cave was similar to the donkey room I mentioned before, so I was left sleeping in the room that’s difficult to detect. I wasn’t sure whether the Japanese came into the cave, but they wouldn’t see me anyway. \n\nI remember the brother of our neighbor (the big brother who was killed in Zhaidi village)—our families and their families had close relations— later came into the cave. He probably heard the news that my family escaped without me, so he carried me outside and waited beside the cave entrance. My parents and siblings then came back, thrilled to see me alive instead of dying under the bayonet.\n\nWhy wasn’t I carried with them? - because they were all sick, especially my dad, he took a big water bottle when he was leaving the cave, and thought the bottle was me! Eventually, he’s too weak to keep on escaping, helplessly saying that even if the Japanese kill me right now I will not feel the pain. My brother begged my father to not give up and walk.\n\t\n**3**\nOf course, the Japanese caught us once. It’s inevitable. We were that time at Baijiayou village in Fuping, with my mother and her sisters, my uncle and his daughter. All of us were women except my uncle, an old man. \n\nWhen we were running away from the Japanese, up and down the hill, we eventually reached the valley, the lowest ground between two hills. My uncle suddenly whispered to us, “there are Japanese soldiers on the east hill!” We froze while the five soldiers, with guns and bayonets, were heading toward us. There was no way we could escape from this: we are surrounded by hills and standing in the middle of a date tree yard. Soon they appeared in front of us, took away my uncle. They let us go since we were all old and young women. To be honest, if we encountered another group of Japanese, they might kill us all. My uncle cooked for the Japanese until the end of the Sino-Japanese war.\n\nOn the same day in the same region, they met a mute. The mute couldn’t speak anyway but he did make some sounds. The Japanese, of course, wouldn’t know what he’s saying but thought he was speaking Chinese. He was killed.",
