It requires no degree or experience in publication, although sometimes those things are helpful.\n\nDid you know that Ray Bradbury never went to college?\n\nSame goes for Argentinian writer, Jorge Luis Borges, Herman Melville (Moby Dick), Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Ernest Hemingway, poet William Blake. Doris Lessing did not even graduate high school.\n\nAnd yet, many people believe they need a writing degree to be a “good” or “successful” writer.\n\nI, too, feel the pangs of a withering confidence at times, and go on to ask a series of questions: “Man, should I get my master’s? Will it make me feel ‘fit’ to teach? Will it make me a true ‘master’?”\n\nAnd while my education—which is actually only a MINOR in creative writing—benefited my craft and expanded my knowledge, it was only because I had professors who CARED that I expand my ability enough to believe in myself.\n\nBelief that you can learn what you need to, and as you go, is the most powerful confidante on this journey.\n\nREADING is your best teacher.\n\nAnd PRACTICE is the only way to achieve an authentic, powerful voice. YOUR voice. Practice strengthens your ability to turn your thoughts into words that make up a story. Practice puts what you know, or don’t know, into motion. It makes you accountable, curious, educated through experience. You understand how writing feels in your body. It’s not always comfortable. It’ll hurt your bum from too much sitting; it will drain your mind from too much thinking. But, it will empower your being, by creating.\n\nDo you think Ray Bradbury or Doris Lessing or Jorge Luis Borges got it right the first time? The first thousand times? No. They worked and re-worked, chiseling their stories into art. They practiced and listened to their inner voice that said, “Uh, your reader’s not gonna buy that… .” They read. They sought advice when they needed. They eventually got editors, to hone their craft even more.\n\nTherefore, there is nothing in the way—not lack of education, not life, no matter how busy it is—that can hold you back.       "body": "When clients tell me they are stumped creatively, I send them a book. <i> Here, read this. It will open your eyes. It will get you to remember the fun of words.</i> Reading awakens a part of your imagination that tends to shut off when you aren’t required to actively engage. Even when watching an inspiring TV show or film, I often find that my brain is coasting. Rarely do we stumble upon a piece of art that makes us pause or think beyond what we are programmed to see. I suppose fiction can be this way, too.       "body": "A common error I see with young writers is that they do not spend enough (or any!) time revising their own work before sending it to an editor or a friend for review. After editing stories for 12 years and eight years professionally, I am here to tell you: Take your story as far as you possibly can before submitting it to an editor.  You should be spending the same amount of time revising your work as you did writing it. Times three!  \n\n![StockSnap_5TYUNNSECD.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaAmUCTnZWZkaabYBPtD35FiAuZXaqeSafgAfDy9XsJM4/StockSnap_5TYUNNSECD.jpg)\n\nThe best discoveries happen when you are combing through something you’ve already written, striking out uninspired words or details, and realizing with precision what it is you’re actually trying to say. “Fiction does not spring into the world fully grown, like Athena. It is the process of writing and rewriting that makes a fiction original, if not profound” (John Gardner, <i>The Art of Fiction</i>).\n\nDuring the revision process, connections form that you didn’t see at first. Subtleties in phrases and metaphors evolve. Your voice becomes prevalent. Suddenly, your story is achieving a depth and fullness it would have missed had you not spend time mining for it. \n\nYour editor can’t do this part for you. She can provide you with ideas, show you areas that are lacking in originality and need more development. But she can’t really dive in deeply until you have done so first.  \n\nWhen you’ve taken your story as far as you can, your editor can work freely in honing the story that is already prevalent. She can come in with fresh eyes to pull out even more connections, metaphors, parallels, imagery—i.e. the things that make your story original and unique. She can touch up phrases using words that fit the voice because it has been clearly established. She can comfortably ask you to consider changing a long text of narrative into a scene with dialogue to give it more intrigue. She will know where to speed things up or slow them down based on the rhythm and pacing you’ve spun into motion.  \n\nNot a seasoned reviser yet? Here are three easy steps to get you started: \n\n1)\tGive your story some space. If you spent all day writing yesterday, then wait a day before you edit so you can come back to the page with a fresh mind and perspective.  \n\n2)\tRead your story out loud. Are there parts you stumble over? Would a simple word change fix the flow? Could you delete the phrase that is slowing things down without sacrificing clarity? Is it even needed?\n\n3)\tHighlight any vague language.  This is a two-step process, with the first part beginning with you just as an observer marking any non-specific language, phrases, or imagery. Simply highlight areas you know could be improved through vivid writing, and then spend a separate session finding solutions for those areas you’ve marked. How can you make an idea more interesting?
