title31 Days of Steem: A Retrospective
body750 Words: 1 Month of Steem Today marks a milestone. @wrashi has been a Steem user for 31 days. ![brooke-lark-194254-unsplash-1000px.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQw65CSd774RyY8KdKCAh5YRB664hhTDEqgHQGyZfZpzT/brooke-lark-194254-unsplash-1000px.jpg) Photo by [Brooke Lark](https://unsplash.com/photos/BRBjShcA8D4?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText) Since the wise look back and learn, the following is my personal retrospective and lessons learnt. I do not meant it to be a critique of the platform, but of my use and understanding of the platform. I tried to capture lessons as principles that I can leverage going forward. ## Ignorance First off, I didn't know what I didn't know when I started using Steem. Initial assumptions included: - Steem is a blogging platform - the main way to engage on the platform is by posting content or comments - the tagging system is the best way to get content in front of people Steem, it turns out, is more than I thought it was. It is bigger. It is more complex. The [initial FAQ documents](https://steemit.com/faq.html "Steemit FAQ | steem") were helpful. So was the content that other people have posted to answer common questions. **Principle**: RTFM and all the other stuff. ## Change is inevitable As the value of Steem has decreased during my month on the platform, it's been instructive to watch those with the most to lose engage with the rest of the community. Some have been admirably smooth and supportive. Others have become incredibly dismissive and demanding. Some Steem users expect all other users to maintain their level of engagement despite internal or external circumstances. I suppose this is to be expected when money is on the line. It seems to me that everyone is trying to understand a platform that changes on a weekly basis. Most of us are trying to keep up. Respect and support of different ways we engage seems the best way to increase my learning. As we share our journey we might even come to important lessons faster. **Principle**: Allow others to be what the are and do what they do while learning from everyone. ## Money as Change Agent I thought it was cool to make money from posting content. To actually profit requires an investment, though. Additionally, the more invested, the more likely content authors are to see a return. As @socky points out, [a basic account has just enough delegated steem to tread water](https://steemit.com/steemit/@socky/why-is-steem-power-important-beginners-read "Why is Steem Power Important? Beginners Read | steem"). Curation, for example is one way to profit. Except there are [complex rules](https://steemit.com/steemit/@calamus056/curation-rewards-explained-in-great-detail "Curation rewards explained in great detail | steem"). Curating [already popular authors is the only way to real profit](https://steemit.com/utopian-io/@lexiconical/allow-authors-to-determine-curation-split-and-timing-edit-30-minute-delay "Allow Authors To Determine Curation Split & Timing (Edit 30 Minute Delay) | steem"). So, the best thing to do seems to be to [build a bot](https://steembottracker.com/ "Steem Bot Tracker") and convince other people to give you their money. **Practical principle**: use Other People's Money and automation. ## Utilizing Re-use Like all social media platforms, Steem tends to reward the [sensational and transient](https://steemit.com/steemit/@galenkp/an-easy-way-to-make-money-online "An Easy Way To Make Money Online | steem"). Steem takes this an additional step by only rewarding those things that are new. Thus, great content from 2 weeks ago is going to be as ignored as that from 2 years ago. The platform also erects barriers to reuse. Steven Johnson in [Where Good Ideas Come From](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8034188-where-good-ideas-come-from "Where Good Ideas Come from: The Natural History of Innovation by Steven Johnson") agued that successful platforms act like coral reefs. Reefs provide the framework for other things to be found and re-used in endless variation. For example, it would be interesting to use the photo content on the site to build better blog posts. Since the tagging system is so general, finding appropriate content is virtually impossible, unfortunately. All this means that potentially useful content remains hidden and ignored. So, content creators go to other platforms to get pictures. Steem isn't in the running as a source. **Proposed principle**: Good content should be rewarded and then surfaced to be repeatedly recycled. ## Making Money is Systematic As [@nathen007](https://steemit.com/steem/@nathen007/oh-lord-forgive-me-for-writing-about-steem-how-to-get-an-income-and-hodl "Oh Lord forgive me for writing about Steem....How to get an income AND hodl | steem") and [@cryptoctopus](https://steemit.com/steem/@cryptoctopus/the-truth-about-ridiculous-high-steemit-payout "The Truth About Ridiculously High Steemit Payout") point out, making money on Steem requires a system. It's not enough to post and hope. There is a complex set of steps that include self-advertisement. It's also helpful to understand how [Steem, Steem Power, and Steem Dollars work](https://steemit.com/steemit/@donkeypong/still-confused-by-steem-steem-dollars-and-steem-power-the-power-plant-analogy "Still Confused by Steem, Steem Dollars, and Steem Power? The Power Plant Analogy | steem"). The relationship between them is not at all intuitive to the beginner. **Principle**: leverage a money making system if you're serious about making money with Steem. ## Wrap it Up Okay, that's enough of my bloviating. Steem is an interesting platform. If it survives the next couple of years, it has the potential to grow into something both unique and useful. The big step it needs to make is [crossing the chasm](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izP5n1SBEaI "Crossing the Chasm in Consumer Markets: A Visual Example - YouTube"). I hope it successfully makes the leap!

titleYou Influence and are Influenced By the Global Household Savings Rate and can Educate Yourself
bodyAt the end of October, the [Global Finance Magazine](https://www.gfmag.com/global-data/economic-data/916lqg-household-saving-rates "Household Saving Rates 2018 | Global Finance Magazine") published household savings rates for 2018. ![rawpixel-761474-unsplash-1000px.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmS3k1mJwNi9HSec5c1qKPLdgUvvNPcH7zcdfdiBbQevww/rawpixel-761474-unsplash-1000px.jpg) Photo by [rawpixel](https://unsplash.com/photos/ixqauhAL34o?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText) ## Understanding The Report There are a lot of countries that are left off the list, mostly due to lack of statistics. Each row in the list gives the savings rate, in percentage, of households for a given country. For example, if you were an average person living in Italy in 2012, you probably saved 1.98% of your household income. In 2018, that amount dropped to 1.66% The percentages can also be negative. For example, if you were an average household living in Lithuania in 2012, you probably spent 1.96% of your savings. The reasons to spend savings vary from going on that dream vacation, getting an education, purchasing a house, or living off retirement savings. As the article notes, there are a lot of factors that can't be taken into consideration when putting together numbers like this. So, this is not as reliable as, say, a temperature measurement. What it does show, over time, is general trends of economic activity. The table also attempts to project where things will go in 2019. Since this is a projection, this should not be taken too seriously. On the other hand, large groups of people tend to change their habits slowly. As a result, trends from previous years can often be projected much more accurately than is expected. The report highlights a number of outliers worth mentioning. On the high notes, Luxembourg, Sweden, and Switzerland have consistently had saving rates over 10%! Sweden and Switzerland have increased their savings rate since 2012. Latvia has also increased its savings rate from -14.52% to -4.5% The general global trend is toward fewer savings and even spending savings. This makes sense given the enormous number of people currently retiring. In Canada, for example, it is estimated that 1,000 people a day are leaving the workforce and starting to live off their savings. This could be in the form of pensions or personal savings. ## Where's all the Money Going? ![sharon-mccutcheon-556371-unsplash-1000px.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcyznmjq8BUQiNd4fQJEp5VSN98Nj6Y1GKRadXHMfK3ue/sharon-mccutcheon-556371-unsplash-1000px.jpg) Photo by [Sharon McCutcheon](https://unsplash.com/photos/-8a5eJ1-mmQ?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText) Some see this as a destruction of wealth but it is better described as a redistribution of wealth. For example, in many countries, the massive inflows of money into pensions and mutual funds have been drying up for a while now. And the outflow is just beginning. This has been a source of cheap and ready capital for companies for many years. It likely means that capital will be harder to raise in the next few decades. The money, rather than disappearing though, will move out of private hands and be used to pay for goods and services. The winners in this growing economy will be those providing what retired people want. What do you think about the savings rate in your country? Any ideas and suggestions to improve the situation? ## The Report <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="585"> <thead> <tr height="12"> <th height="12" scope="col"> <h5>Country</h5> Magazine\") published household savings rates for 2018. \n\n![rawpixel-761474-unsplash-1000px.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmS3k1mJwNi9HSec5c1qKPLdgUvvNPcH7zcdfdiBbQevww/rawpixel-761474-unsplash-1000px.jpg)\nPhoto by [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText)\n\n##\t\tUnderstanding The Report \n\nThere are a lot of countries that are left off the list, mostly due to lack of statistics.\nEach row in the list gives the savings rate, in percentage, of households for a given country. \nFor example, if you were an average person living in Italy in 2012, you probably saved 1.98% of your household income. \nIn 2018, that amount dropped to 1.66%\n\nThe percentages can also be negative.\nFor example, if you were an average household living in Lithuania in 2012, you probably spent 1.96% of your savings.\nThe reasons to spend savings vary from going on that dream vacation, getting an education, purchasing a house, or living off retirement savings.\n\nAs the article notes, there are a lot of factors that can't be taken into consideration when putting together numbers like this.\nSo, this is not as reliable as, say, a temperature measurement.\nWhat it does show, over time, is general trends of economic activity.\n\nThe table also attempts to project where things will go in 2019.\nSince this is a projection, this should not be taken too seriously.\nOn the other hand, large groups of people tend to change their habits slowly.\nAs a result, trends from previous years can often be projected much more accurately than is expected.\n\nThe report highlights a number of outliers worth mentioning.\nOn the high notes, Luxembourg, Sweden, and Switzerland have consistently had saving rates over 10%!\nSweden and Switzerland have increased their savings rate since 2012.\nLatvia has also increased its savings rate from -14.52% to -4.5%\n\nThe general global trend is toward fewer savings and even spending savings.\nThis makes sense given the enormous number of people currently retiring.\nIn Canada, for example, it is estimated that 1,000 people a day are leaving the workforce and starting to live off their savings.\nThis could be in the form of pensions or personal savings.\n\n##\t\tWhere's all the Money Going?\n\n![sharon-mccutcheon-556371-unsplash-1000px.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmcyznmjq8BUQiNd4fQJEp5VSN98Nj6Y1GKRadXHMfK3ue/sharon-mccutcheon-556371-unsplash-1000px.jpg)\nPhoto by [Sharon McCutcheon](https://unsplash.com/photos/-8a5eJ1-mmQ?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText) on [Unsplash](https://unsplash.com?utm_source=unsplash&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_content=creditCopyText)\n\nSome see this as a destruction of wealth but it is better described as a redistribution of wealth.\nFor example, in many countries, the massive inflows of money into pensions and mutual funds have been drying up for a while now.\nAnd the outflow is just beginning.\n\nThis has been a source of cheap and ready capital for companies for many years.\nIt likely means that capital will be harder to raise in the next few decades.\nThe money, rather than disappearing though, will move out of private hands and be used to pay for goods and services.\nThe winners in this growing economy will be those providing what retired people want.\n\nWhat do you think about the savings rate in your country?\nAny ideas and suggestions to improve the situation?\n\n##\t\tThe Report\n\n<table border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" width=\"585\">\n\t<thead>\n\t\t<tr bodyAt the end of October, the [Global Finance Magazine](https://www.gfmag.com/global-data/economic-data/916lqg-household-saving-rates "Household Saving Rates 2018 | Global Finance Magazine") published household savings rates for 2018. ## The Report <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="585"> <thead> <tr height="12"> <th height="12" scope="col"> <h5>Country</h5> title
bodyThanks for the comment, @idigit! I'd guess that you like _way_ too much music to get stuck into a pattern that doesn't change. :) Change might be good, but I still prefer what I call "good change" over what I consider to be "bad change". I mean, there are genres that don't make my list because I can't stand them, despite my best efforts.
