An Italian group of scientists based in Milan have published a novel approach to the management of heart failure this week based on nanoparticle therapy. In their study, the researchers used calcium phosphate nanoparticles to deliver therapeutic compounds to the heart through an inhaled route. In a mouse model of diabetic cardiomyopathy, a condition in diabetic humans, the inhaled nanoparticles were effectively delivered to the heart via the blood vessels in the lungs, reaching the heart more efficiently than via intravenous injection or oral administration (the two major routes of drug delivery for most drugs). Additionally, no adverse effects were noted in the mice, and the group was able to show significant improvement in heart function in the treated mice. The group also tested the nanoparticles on healthy pigs, which are much closer in anatomic size and physiology to humans than rodents.       "body": "<html>\n<p>Tonight I am celebrating the fact that I am nearing the publication of a paper I have been working on for just over a year. Aside from a few small spelling errors I caught in the proof the publisher sent me, it should be on its way to the journal. Particularly in the face of real life concerns and issues. Tiny wins seem to have an out-sized role in providing a psychological boost. The moment will inevitably be fleeting, and then it will be on to chasing the next thing, or dealing with the next crisis, or celebrating the future accomplishment. I am celebrating this little win not only with a beer, but a reflection and moment of mindfulness to be living fully in the present. I hope I can use this moment to leverage myself into a better mental state, one with less anxiety and a greater appreciation for the things I have and the things I have achieved. I will also use this time to reflect on what a sappy write I can be, especially looking back over the last few blog postings. I feel they are not reflective of my day-to-day personality. I wonder if this blog serves as an outlet for a side of myself I keep bottled up at work. Now that I am living alone, I keep my own company most of the time, and don't have any close confidants, not that I have ever been into sharing much of my feelings, even with friends. So tonight I share my little victory and resolution to be more in touch with the present with whatever member of this strange online community stops by. Good luck to any readers out there. I hope you all experience some small win in the near future that gives you a boost.</p>\n<p>Another long day, but overall a good one.       "body": "It's impressive how the mind looks for human figures in abstract and obscure situations.  I certainly can see the ghostly figure in the picture, although it appears to me to be just a trick of the shadows (and it almost appears there is a mirroring artifact to the left of the ghost). It would be interesting to know if the fact we're hard-wired to look for human shapes is a by-product  of or contributing factor to us being social creatures. I suppose it could also represent threat detection, but I would think we would be more likely to imagine we see things like large predators in such a case. Anyway, interesting way that photo turned out.",

She arrived in LA on Friday and her friend suggested they go get dinner at a local restaurant, where she promptly ordered wine. My wife, unaccustomed to this kind of situation and not a professional therapist or counselor of any kind, was taken aback, but not wanting to be an enabler, ordered water for herself. Over the course of the next two days, she saw firsthand the struggles of someone grappling with the realities of addiction. She saw how family and friends, uncertain with how to confront such situations, either distanced themselves or tried to act as though things were normal by extending invitations to Dina to come celebrate a birthday at the bar. She saw how Dina's mother passive-aggressively texted her about not responding to messages promptly. I have struggled with depression and axiety, feeling of inadequacy. I have amassed formidable debts from education, moving several times, and I have failed brilliantly in several endeavors. My wife and I are currently long-distance, trying to move our careers forward, but it has strained our relationship. I think back to simpler times when the future legitimately seemed bright. As a child, or in high school, and college. I think back to myself at those times and all those friends, crushes, and interests I have lost contact with. I feel so disconnected from past versions of myself that they seem as though they were different people. As I sit here alone, blogging into a void, I wonder if Dina has similar reflections on her own life. At some point there must have been some granule of hope that led to her life path. She, like me, like &nbsp;my wife, is outwardly successful. Through careful tending of my social media, no one who knows me would ever know my internal struggles and burdens that are depriving me of sleep. At times I myself don't realize how much they are weighing on me. And &nbsp;then, like a flash flood, sheer panic roars in while I am on my couch watching re-runs of shows I have seen so many times I could recite them verbatim, but they bring some level of comfort and predictability into my life so I keep them on in the background while I sit at home. I wonder if Dina is thinking about the same things; if she remembers herself as a young child in school, where the greatest challenge was deciding what color crayon to use for the sky. When mistakes came without a price.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Funny how quickly things can change. We are all still relatively young and yet I feel that time is racing by. Each year passes faster than the last, and I seem to be enjoying each one less than the one before. I am not sure if this is a &nbsp;normal progression of happiness. I have seen studies which show people in my age group tend to be entering the least happy years of their lives, and then things start to improve again, but if I recall correctly that seems to be a decade or two in advance. I have little cause to complain - I have my dream position, and my future should be bright, when viewed on paper. But every day feels like I have fallen in quicksand and I sink a little further every day.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>I think about Dina, and then I think about how often I go to the grocery store for beer. Or how quickly I go through the most recent bottle of whiskey I bought. Then I look for the accepted standards for determining who is an alcoholic, as though that can help justify my current consumption. I'm not there, but I feel like I could go there easily enough. I understand how Dina could have gotten there. Through immense pressure placed on her self, loneliness, and the lost innocence which is never coming back again. A sense of impending doom that never really goes away. Anything to make us feel like laughing again.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Part of me keeps some amount of optimism. I am a capable human being, but I am also deeply flawed, and its in adulthood that you must confront those stark realities of not being the person you always thought you were. Recognizing that the shortcomings in our lives are, in fact, serious shortcomings. And the worst may be yet to come. And despite achieving all of our dreams, we have sacrificed so much of ourselves that we may never be happy, but also recognizing that if we had sacrificed our dreams we would also be plagued &nbsp;with regrets and yearning. A recognition that perhaps some of us are just doomed to be happy because we lack the grit and creativity to somehow make \"all of this\" work.       "body": "I think there are different reasons for the various issues you are raising here. I think partly the issue with the pyramid is that people like ancient mysteries, and it's fun to think that they were built in some unknown way. Many people also grew up being taught that it was not certain how they were built, which is then hyperbolized to \"we have no idea how they built them\". Furthermore, people cannot all keep up with more recent thinking about these things, so those ideas get stuck, and then develop into sort of a persistent urban legend. \n\nVaccine reactions and climate change I think have other issues behind them. Some may overlap. Tribalism may be an issue with climate change. Due to clever marketing, it is an issue that has now been packaged in the general conservative platform, which makes it easy for low-information voters to decide their stance on the issue. Pair that with readily available sources constantly questioning the  validity of climate change and people selecting information which reinforces their already held opinions, and it gets difficult to correct that viewpoint. Anti-vaxxers are another issue as well. Modern medicine and society has allowed us to be so healthy that people can no longer tell the reason they are healthy is mostly from vaccinations of the population, sanitation, water quality, etc. Its easy for them to attribute health to \"living naturally\" and they have a suspicion of corporations. The one (later retracted) study drawing a link between vaccines and autism was the only seed needed for the persistent viewpoint to hold, and efforts to discredit it are viewed as the corporate line. \n\nRegardless, its one of the costs of living in a society which does not value education, and actively tries to distill complex information down to talking points, as well as having a binary political system.",
