titleRe-Think Cryptocurrency Energy Consumption
body# Four Reasons To Re-Think Crypto Energy Consumption Cryptocurrencies are often criticized for their high energy consumption. The counterargument to the problem with cryptocurrency energy consumption rests on four main issues: - Cryptocurrency energy consumption is misinterpreted - The current monetary systems are inefficient and wasteful - Renewable sources are used for mining in many areas - The cost of energy consumption pushes technology innovation Give “cryptocurrency energy consumption” a Google search. The results turn out articles and websites with polar opposite positions on the topic. Regardless of the stance, few mention the importance of a miner’s electricity source, and even fewer share any data on how much energy is used by our current fiat system. There are huge costs associated with printing money and minting coins that only represent the precious metals our societies once held value in. ## Energy Consumption Bitcoin is by far the most widely used cryptocurrency, holding more than 50% of the overall cryptocurrency market cap value. [One website](https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption) tracks Bitcoin and Ethereum (the second most active cryptocurrency) energy consumption. According to the data, Bitcoin accounts for just one-third of one percent of total global energy usage right now, and Ethereum uses only one-tenth of one percent. But even these low estimations cannot be taken at face value. Not all miners are using the same hardware setup - some equipment is more energy efficient than others. Further, [a recent article](https://theconversation.com/stop-worrying-about-how-much-energy-bitcoin-uses-97591) by a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh argues that the source, not the amount, of energy is what matters in the end. > _If Bitcoin technology were to mature by more than 100 times its current market size, it would still equal only 2 percent of all energy consumption._ - Electrical and Computer Engineering with a focus on Renewable Energy Researcher [Katrina Kelly-Pitou](https://theconversation.com/stop-worrying-about-how-much-energy-bitcoin-uses-97591) Others who assess cryptocurrency through the lens of economics believe that as their use grows, energy use will increase proportionally. To show the contrast in opinion between two experts in the related fields on the energy consumption of Bitcoin mining: > _It’s an extreme difference compared to the regular financial system, and this increasing electricity demand is definitely not going to help us reach our climate goals._ - Economist [Alex De Vries](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2542435118301776) ## Mining Vs. Regular Financial System The traditional banking industry consumes [closer to 100 terawatts](https://hackernoon.com/the-bitcoin-vs-visa-electricity-consumption-fallacy-8cf194987a50) of power each year (roughly - 26Twh on data servers, 58Twh on branches, 13Twh on ATMs). With cryptocurrencies, all users need is a phone or computer that they likely already have and use frequently. The estimated energy consumption by cryptocurrencies currently is around 70Twh, [according to the data](https://www.cell.com/joule/fulltext/S2542-4351(18)30177-6) used to formulate the opinion by economist Alex De Vries. In the U.S. the expected 2018 currency manufacturing budget is $861.7 million, according to [the Federal Reserve](https://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/currency_12771.htm). The process of producing the currency each year is not only expensive but energy-intensive. [This study](http://www.uvm.edu/~shali/currency.pdf) breaks down the process fairly and highlights the positive and negative aspects associated throughout. The facility used to manufacture all currency for the U.S. uses many energy-saving and energy-recycling systems, but is powered by a fossil-fuel energy plant. Most paper currencies are made using fiber, not tree paper so that they can withstand daily use. In the U.S. most of the product is recycled from old bills to re-use in new ones. However, the method for creating the feel and appearance on a bill is created by first cooking in sodium hydroxide, and then brightening the fiber with sodium hypochlorite (used in bleach). Both are strong contaminants to the environment. Overall it uses more than 1 million gallons of water each day in the process, with 30% water waste. ## The Mining Misunderstanding The mining process is where most people who learn about cryptocurrencies come to a stop. Some of the most technical aspects of their functionality come into play with terms like from coding and mathematics such as hashing, SHA-256 algorithm, nonce, and cryptographic signatures. This debate of energy consumption largely rests on Bitcoin, because of its mining process and its high popularity in relation to any other cryptocurrency. For Bitcoin, whether a transaction is worth $1 or $1 billion dollars, the transaction will be blocked into the same amount of data. Bitcoin was designed specifically to maintain what are comparatively slow transaction times to credit card transactions. This is an intentional part of the mining process, which ultimately maintains the security of the network. Mining provides an incentive to participate honestly that vastly outweighs the effort it would take to steal. In its 10-year existence, the Bitcoin network has never been hacked. This brings two major benefits related to energy consumption: First, the total possible amount of energy used per minute, hour, day, or year, is indirectly limited to this underlying protocol. Second, the incentive pushes miners and energy producers to create new, faster, and more efficient technology. ## Driving Innovation and Progress The business of mining is hyper-competitive. Individuals in the early days of Bitcoin could mine with just a standard computer, but specialized computers were developed to outpace competition from the average user, and are now necessary to be successful. The hardware needed has now become more widely available, so miners need to find new ways to be profitable. One of the most significant ways to do so is to reduce their electricity costs. Because of this they are commonly at the forefront of new technology related to renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. ## Re-Focus On The Energy Source The renewable energy researcher quoted earlier in contrast to the economist is adamant that the conversation needs to shift toward where that energy is produced and what it is generated from, instead of energy-intensivity. Many countries around the world have developed much more rigid guidelines or tax incentives for energy production that employ more efficient systems or ideally, renewable or “green” sources. > _By talking specifically about ... the consumption of energy alone... many fail to understand one of the most basic benefits of renewable energy systems. Electricity production can increase while still maintaining a minimal impact on the environment… Not all types of energy generation are equal in their impact on the environment, nor does the world uniformly rely on the same types of generation across states and markets._ - [Katrina Kelly-Pitou](https://theconversation.com/stop-worrying-about-how-much-energy-bitcoin-uses-97591) ## Polar Opposites The cryptocurrency mining activity in China and Iceland highlights the strong disparity that exists relating to power generation and government influence, as well as one of the issues with cryptocurrencies that cannot be refuted. China is a cryptocurrency mining superpower due to its cheap electricity supply. Some estimates show that China accounted for over 70% of total Bitcoin mining in 2017. However, a study by the University of Cambridge in April 2017 shows that the country accounts for only 60%. In either case, it is the majority and poses a problem because the country uses primarily fossil fuels. Iceland is becoming a popular spot for cryptocurrency miners, because of similarly low electricity rates. However, the lower rates are in place because of their nearly 100% renewable energy sources of geothermal and hydroelectric.

      "title": "Re-Think Cryptocurrency Energy Consumption",
      "body": "# Four Reasons To Re-Think Crypto Energy Consumption\n\nCryptocurrencies are often criticized for their high energy consumption. The counterargument to the problem with cryptocurrency energy consumption rests on four main issues:\n- Cryptocurrency energy consumption is misinterpreted\n- The current monetary systems are inefficient and wasteful\n- Renewable sources are used for mining in many areas\n- The cost of energy consumption pushes technology innovation\n\nGive “cryptocurrency energy consumption” a Google search. The results turn out articles and websites with polar opposite positions on the topic. Regardless of the stance, few mention the importance of a miner’s electricity source, and even fewer share any data on how much energy is used by our current fiat system. There are huge costs associated with printing money and minting coins that only represent the precious metals our societies once held value in.\n\n## Energy Consumption\nBitcoin is by far the most widely used cryptocurrency, holding more than 50% of the overall cryptocurrency market cap value. \n\nBut even these low estimations cannot be taken at face value. \n\n> _If Bitcoin technology were to mature by more than 100 times its current market size, it would still equal only 2 percent of all energy consumption._ - Electrical and Computer Engineering with a focus on Renewable Energy Researcher [Katrina Kelly-Pitou](https://theconversation.com/stop-worrying-about-how-much-energy-bitcoin-uses-97591)\n\nOthers who assess cryptocurrency through the lens of economics believe that as their use grows, energy use will increase proportionally. To show the contrast in opinion between two experts in the related fields on the energy consumption of Bitcoin mining:\n\n> _It’s an extreme difference compared to the regular financial system, and this increasing electricity demand is definitely not going to help us reach our climate goals._ - Economist [Alex De Vries](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2542435118301776)\n\n## Mining Vs. Regular Financial System\nThe traditional banking industry consumes [closer to 100 terawatts](https://hackernoon.com/the-bitcoin-vs-visa-electricity-consumption-fallacy-8cf194987a50) of power each year (roughly - 26Twh on data servers, 58Twh on branches, 13Twh on ATMs). With cryptocurrencies, all users need is a phone or computer that they likely already have and use frequently. The estimated energy consumption by cryptocurrencies currently is around 70Twh, [according to the data](https://www.cell.com/joule/fulltext/S2542-4351(18)30177-6) used to formulate the opinion by economist Alex De Vries.\n\nIn the U.S. the expected 2018 currency manufacturing budget is $861.7 million, according to [the Federal Reserve](https://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/currency_12771.htm). \n\nMost paper currencies are made using fiber, not tree paper so that they can withstand daily use. In the U.S. most of the product is recycled from old bills to re-use in new ones. However, the method for creating the feel and appearance on a bill is created by first cooking in sodium hydroxide, and then brightening the fiber with sodium hypochlorite (used in bleach). Both are strong contaminants to the environment. Overall it uses more than 1 million gallons of water each day in the process, with 30% water waste.\n\n## The Mining Misunderstanding\nThe mining process is where most people who learn about cryptocurrencies come to a stop. \n\nFor Bitcoin, whether a transaction is worth $1 or $1 billion dollars, the transaction will be blocked into the same amount of data. Bitcoin was designed specifically to maintain what are comparatively slow transaction times to credit card transactions. This is an intentional part of the mining process, which ultimately maintains the security of the network. Mining provides an incentive to participate honestly that vastly outweighs the effort it would take to steal. In its 10-year existence, the Bitcoin network has never been hacked.\n\nThis brings two major benefits related to energy consumption: First, the total possible amount of energy used per minute, hour, day, or year, is indirectly limited to this underlying protocol. Second, the incentive pushes miners and energy producers to create new, faster, and more efficient technology. \n\n## Driving Innovation and Progress\nThe business of mining is hyper-competitive. \n\n## Re-Focus On The Energy Source\nThe renewable energy researcher quoted earlier in contrast to the economist is adamant that the conversation needs to shift toward where that energy is produced and what it is generated from, instead of energy-intensivity. Many countries around the world have developed much more rigid guidelines or tax incentives for energy production that employ more efficient systems or ideally, renewable or “green” sources. \n\n> _By talking specifically about ... the consumption of energy alone... many fail to understand one of the most basic benefits of renewable energy systems. Electricity production can increase while still maintaining a minimal impact on the environment… Not all types of energy generation are equal in their impact on the environment, nor does the world uniformly rely on the same types of generation across states and markets._ - [Katrina Kelly-Pitou](https://theconversation.com/stop-worrying-about-how-much-energy-bitcoin-uses-97591)\n\n## Polar Opposites\nThe cryptocurrency mining activity in China and Iceland highlights the strong disparity that exists relating to power generation and government influence, as well as one of the issues with cryptocurrencies that cannot be refuted. \n\nChina is a cryptocurrency mining superpower due to its cheap electricity supply. Some estimates show that China accounted for over 70% of total Bitcoin mining in 2017. However, a study by the University of Cambridge in April 2017 shows that the country accounts for only 60%. In either case, it is the majority and poses a problem because the country uses primarily fossil fuels.\n\nIceland is becoming a popular spot for cryptocurrency miners, because of similarly low electricity rates. However, the lower rates are in place because of their nearly 100% renewable energy sources of geothermal and hydroelectric.",

titleA Bitcoin Pizza Decade
body# Bitcoin Pizza Decade The introduction from the first time the “Bitcoin Pizza Day” topic made [Forbes in 2013](https://www.forbes.com/sites/ericmack/2013/12/23/the-bitcoin-pizza-purchase-thats-worth-7-million-today/#74963f102509) when BTC exchange rates reached over $100, is just about as timeless as internet content gets. >This is a fable for the Bitcoin bubble (or not?) that we're living through this year. Back in 2010, Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz talked someone into accepting the 10,000 Bitcoins he'd "mined" on his computer in exchange for two pizzas. Since then, every year in early March, media outlets begin running the same ‘how mad are you that you could have been rich?’ story about the programmer who “talked someone into accepting” Bitcoins for pizza. ![BitcoinTalk - Pizza for bitcoins?.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmfCKuasUhoYC1QbFdUNLrVda78VHTWahoeBs9MMcK4MHA/BitcoinTalk%20-%20Pizza%20for%20bitcoins?.jpg) At the time, there was no exchange rate for BTC. There was no Mt. Gox, no Binance, no Coinbase. There were less than 300 active Bitcoin wallets in existence. Uber Cabs had just [launched their beta services](https://techcrunch.com/2010/07/05/ubercab-takes-the-hassle-out-of-booking-a-car-service/) that month. At the time, online food ordering was totally uncommon. GrubHub had been founded years prior, but had only raised $12 million in venture funding to provide services in only 12 states. This was months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti which killed roughly 160,000. Europe was at risk of a double-dip recession after reporting the Eurozone only grew by 0.1% in the last quarter of 2009. In America, Obama had just signed the HIRE Act, putting $17.5 billion into job creation and $20 billion into the highway trust fund, while [Goldman Sachs was in court for securities fraud](https://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/17/business/17goldman.html?_r=1&hp), eventually paying out $550 million without admitting fault. Since the internet boom of the early 2000’s the value of the USD dollar had plummeted. The 2008 financial crisis brought about the lowest [U.S. Dollar Index Value](https://www.macrotrends.net/1329/us-dollar-index-historical-chart) of all time. In May 2010, it was dropping right back down again, and with this slide came the beginning of a [global currency war](https://www.bbc.com/news/business-11608719). ![U.S. Dollar Index - 43 Year Historical Chart.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTre6fvsjtFuRX6XqdGMMUfa94J8C5C13kRHeYrZVytQK/U.S.%20Dollar%20Index%20-%2043%20Year%20Historical%20Chart.jpg) But tucked away in a little corner of the internet in May of 2010, Laszlo posted his fabled request for pizza to the 7 month old BitcoinTalk community of no more than 200 total members. He offered what was roughly $40 worth of BTC for two large pizzas, maybe loaded up, maybe not: >I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc.. just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that. I also like regular cheese pizzas which may be cheaper to prepare or otherwise acquire. No matter the interview, it’s clear the guy isn’t mad about the past. He was just having fun with the possibilities of a new technology and its infant community. Not only was he trying to give a deal, he was accounting for tipping the delivery driver. > The exchange is favorable for anyone who does it because the 2 pizzas are only about 25 dollars total, maybe 30 if you give the guy a nice tip. If you get me the upgraded extra large ones or something, I can throw in some more bitcoins, just let me know and we'll work something out. In fact, he was getting flack for his imbalanced pizza to BTC exchange rate just two months after he proposed the open ended trade by other users on the [BitcoinTalk forum thread](https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137.0), when the value of a Bitcoin grew from less than pennies to a few whole pennies. ![BitcoinTalk - Pizza Anyone? Open request.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWYuZghcHG1JHDr4GzmK8JUV9k7sqnKpYvfcfPhHT1fdh/BitcoinTalk%20-%20Pizza%20Anyone?%20Open%20request.jpg) By the end of 2010, the price had reached over nickels, over dimes, to two whole quarters per BTC. The market as a whole, all of Bitcoin, reached a $1 million USD value on November 6th 2010, and by the end of the year, there were over 1,000 active Bitcoin wallets. 837 new members joined the BitcoinTalk forum in the month of January 2011 alone. ![Bitcoin Active Wallets May 2010 - December 2010.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmePeZm9FRdg3AcqfJvjMe4Egn4ny9YHWPcPiWtbqofrqC/Bitcoin%20Active%20Wallets%20May%202010%20-%20December%202010.jpg) ## Network Effects One of the common arguments against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is that they have no inherent value. This can be defended in a number of ways, but one of the most basic principals working for Bitcoin is network effects - the correlation between additional users of a product or service and its value to potential customers. Tangible examples of the result of network effects for cryptocurrency are services such as Bitcoin ATMs, cryptocurrency payment processors and the increase in value since its creation in 2008. But on a smaller scale, trading Bitcoin for pizza is an example of the kind of user engagement that sparked this potential for Bitcoin to become a globally exchanged currency. In 2010, just as countries around the world were bailing out governments, corporations, and pouring stimulus money into the economy, Laszo started the same with his extra Bitcoin on a micro-scale. Instead of hoarding them or storing them on a hard drive to forget about, he looked for opportunity in the present. And It’s important to note that Laszlo thanked “everyone” who bought him pizzas, for two reasons. 1. Network Effects - How many users did buy him pizza? Did anyone specifically decide to mine Bitcoin to make $40? Remember that with less than 300 active Bitcoin wallets at the time, just one person making that decision affected the whole. 2. This was a gift exchange between Bitcoin community members. Laszlo didn’t just purchase two Papa John’s pizzas for 10,000 Bitcoin. He gifted another user the BTC, in exchange for the service of ordering two pizzas and paying for them with USD. In one way, this negates the benefit of Bitcoin as a “trustless” medium of exchange, because the two payments were made separately. However, this kind of trust-based community engagement is a consummate example of why some products or services catch on, while others never gain the momentum needed to reach a mass audience. Today, there are millions of BitcoinTalk forum members, the active wallet number is more like 600,000, the total market cap value for Bitcoin is over $120 million, and the total after taxes but before a delivery fee to order a couple sausage, pepperoni, banana pepper and onion, large pizzas from Papa John’s are $45.45. So while Little Caesars Hot-N-Ready Pizzas have been $5 since 1997, focusing on the efficiency in pick-up service, Papa John’s seems to be working a different angle to continue their growth, including a pivot from a pizza place to… papadias? A niche combination of “Part Pizza. Part Sandwich.” ![Papa Johns Current Homepage.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXMxwC46D6wfbPS2Q7saozmivgUtsDKS5T6pYX3EthU6K/Papa%20Johns%20Current%20Homepage.jpg) However neither Papa John’s, Little Caesars or any other of the major pizza chains accept direct cryptocurrency payments. Many food delivery services have followed Grubhub’s growth to a $3 billion dollar company. There are several around the world which offer delivery that [accept cryptocurrency payments](https://news.bitcoin.com/8-food-delivery-sites-that-accept-cryptocurrency/). You might ask, *why a Papadia? Why not just get a pizza? Why not just get a calzone? Why not just get a warm italian sandwich?* But in the same light, one might ask, *why Bitcoin? Why not just use cash? Why not just use Paypal? Why not just a credit card?* The world is now dealing with another potential financial crisis due to widespread business closures in the wake of COVID-19. The EU is looking at up to [1.5 trillion Euros](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-24/eu-finance-chiefs-seek-deal-to-deploy-rescue-fund-against-virus). America is preparing a stimulus bill for [as much as $2 trillion](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-25/bipartisan-deal-sets-up-stimulus-vote-in-senate-congress-update). *Why buy pizza with Bitcoin?* Because you just never know.

titleJoin a Revolution: More Birds With Less Stones
body# <center>Proof-of-(Idea) </center> <center>*A Written Exercise Joining Ancient Technology, Efficiency and Flight*</center> <center>![Leonardo_Design_for_a_Flying_Machine,_c._1488.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQopYkN8fjinCJ7p8dwppHuPzEbMRPfvvjCFciFs27QF1/Leonardo_Design_for_a_Flying_Machine%2C_c._1488.jpg)</center> ## Two Birds With One Stone </br> I'm one of those people that doesn't hate the dentist. In fact, I enjoy it. "Are you brushing at least twice a day?" Yes. "Are you flossing every night?" Yes. "Everything seems to be looking pretty good." I know. I'm so comfortable in that space, in those ridiculous chairs that probably cost as much as a car that sometimes I fall asleep while there are steel devices prodding my teeth and gums. <center>*Yet, every single night I say to myself, "god I don't wan to brush my teeth."*</center> The only exception to this is if I take a shower right before going to bed. I brush in the shower - 2 birds, one bath. I get out of the shower, habit takes over - I floss. I put on Blistex (liquid not the tube stuff). I'm done. I'm now allowed to sleep. ## Birds of a Feather... I had been using a 40 minute commute to fit in a couple Podcasts every work day - 2birds, one drive. Without a commute, I now count taking notes and recording thoughts during a Podcast as a writing activity to double up on my "listen to podcast" time. --- <center>*Oh to be Leonardo... having downed a couple chalices of flowing wine, now flowing of ideas like people using unknown contraptions to take up flying some day*</center> --- And apparently, it inspires me to fly with those silly ideas and associations here until I can land on a fluid connection them all. ## Paycheck or a pay raise? I was listening to [an episode](http://learningleader.com/episode-227-jeff-goins-thriving-artist-real-artists-dont-starve/) of [The Learning Leader](http://learningleader.com/). The guest was Jeff Goins, author of [Real Artists Don't Starve](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33027982-real-artists-don-t-starve). He was inspired to write the book after learning that Leonardo da Vinci was actually extremely wealthy in his lifetime. It turns out the famous Renaissance artist made his way on more than skill. Goins presses that the ideal of the "starving artist" life is perpetuated by the individual's habits, not enforced by the world, and uses the example of establishing a work relationship on free work. --- <center>*Oh Leonardo... a couple chalices of flowing wine, now flowing of optimism where people pay him handsomely for his art*</center> --- It will never lead to a balanced exchange - it is always more difficult for an employer to move from a non-existent payment to payment of anything, than it is to increase a payment of anything to something more. Leonardo Da Vinci broke boundaries of the time period by demanding he be paid during his apprenticeship - 2brds, 1 stone. This standard seems to have accelerated as his life went on, leaving records of large bank accounts and property titles to his name. ## 0 to 60 vs 10 to 70 My first thought was car engines. Gas consumption is most rapid to move from a stop to any speed at all. Increasing speed from 35 to 45, or 45 to 55 improves gas milage. There are a myriad of [research](https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy12osti/53864.pdf) studies on driving habits and fuel efficiency, as well as the speeds at which certain engines or vehicles operate most efficiently. Energy!... physics classes! <center>**Inertia** - moving stuff wants to keep moving - sitting stuff wants to keep sitting</center> --- <center>*Leonardo... couple chalices of flowing wine, flowing ideas of eternal design*</center> --- <center>**Momentum** - how capable the stuff is of maintaining its state of moving or sitting</center> In showering, I use a block of time. I can complete the task of brushing my teeth in that same block at night, to ensure the next two steps of that habit. The inevitable momentum of having brushed my teeth is that I will floss and put on Blistex, regardless of any other motives I have consciously - 2Bs, 1 stn. ## Building something out of nothing To me, one of the coolest things Bitcoin did was unite the Past, Present and Future. People will always be making transactions - it's like a culture constant. The Bitcoin Whitepaper clarified a way to tack storage of all past transactions onto that infinite momentum. In transacting, the user is perpetuating an accurate history of the network. 2B, 1ledger --- <center>*Leonardo... flowing wine, ideas materializing history* </center> --- Really, it's more like blocking nothing onto something. A relationship is created that didn't exist before. Whatever a goal or idea is, it needs a vehicle or platform. The easiest way to put something in motion is to take something that works, something that's moving and has momentum, and piggyback! - until it can fly on its own. ## Two animals, one goal Flight. Leonardo da Vinci's drawings of flying machines replicated the structure of a bird. I would love to argue (after some wine) that airplanes most resemble Penguins, not that it matters - they just don't function like birds on the surface., while carrying the DNA for wings inside. --- <center>*Leonardo... flowing wine flying entwined* </center> --- Modern planes can take flight and sustain it by an airfoil wing design - the air on top is moving faster than the air passing below. Pretty simple - all flying birds' wings form some variation of this. The first evidence by humans using this concept is in windmills long before attempting to fly - between 500BC and 900BC - 2B 1wing ## A Lift Up The blades on a helicopter are its wings, each one is an airfoil. Instead of flapping, they are spun, creating a constant swing that's fast enough to engage the airfoil and lift it off the ground. Surprise! Helicopters were old news. The first windmills were horizontal 2B1idea <center>![Screen Shot 2018-03-27 at 7.01.01 PM.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUqTQ1SijsdxQAkgFTgUv6S9FCmH9fnBbCnF5DWQ26fkm/Screen%20Shot%202018-03-27%20at%207.01.01%20PM.png)</center> Planes have stationary wings. They mimic a bird that runs to gain momentum, reaching speeds of 150 to 180mph to create lift. The basic idea behind jet engines is actually older than the airfoil concept! [aeolipiles](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolipile) - radial steam turbines, created in 150 BC B1idea ## BIdea More birds with less stones. --- ### <center >[Who am I?](https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@wisexorfool/hello)</center> ### <center>[How did I get into cryptocurrencies and blockchain?](https://steemit.com/education/@wisexorfool/so-you-want-to-learn-about-bitcoin-stuff-really-fast-bitcamp)</center>
