| body | I recently started developed interest in the cryptocurrency market, with a particular interest in technical analysis and conducting trades off of it. My first biggest observation was that everyone has an opinion, and everyone is sure that they’re right. It’s my guilty pleasure to see people start losing money and panicking on Discord channels – because oh: “Surprise surprise, everything you’re saying was based off of a tweet you saw and not actual research and trend analysis. And well done, your loud voice lost other people money too.” Blind opinions Everyone has an opinion on everything, and I learnt that to trade well – I needed to shut off those opinions and focus on the facts. Now – cryptocurrencies are different from people. They have whitepapers, websites, company profiles, live charts and the likes etc etc. All the information is provided to you so you can make good judgement (or for you to ignore and pose as a know-it-all who ends up losing everything – this has actually started to make me sad, since people are losing their grandparents’ pension and mortgages). TLI (Too little information) People don’t have so much exposed – and we’re not telepathic either. So it blows my mind when people spend time forming opinions about other people. The reason I don’t suggest engaging in opinion forming is simple: It’s usually triggered by bad intentions There is not enough information to arrive to a valid conclusion No productive end goal Those should be enough red flags to stop you from doing it. Of course, I appreciate that opinions aren’t formed to arrive to any valid conclusions, but to make us feel better about ourselves. Which poses the larger issue: Finding joy and validation externally. The danger of external validation External validation dependency is a disease that is consuming the human race. I see it with Black South Africans – buying expensive clothes, expensive cars and expensive alcohol – all for external validation – forgetting to invest in things that will legitimately make their lives better. I understand and sympathize with the root of this problem, and it deserves an article of its own. I see it with Cape Tonians today. People watering their gardens with the hose on, chatting away – so that people don’t form bad opinions about them based on their garden. Or young people spending hours on the perfect selfie with the perfect filters so that others can form good opinions about them. When do you find time for yourself? Ignoring opinions Although we can never say opinions don’t affect us (unless they are from people we consider far below us) – we need to develop filters. The reason to ignore opinions is in the word itself: they are opinions. Everyone has one. Everyone’s opinion is likely unique and not based off of enough data points that cause it to be valid. For those reasons, listening to, not just forming, opinions is a waste of time. If you’re told that carrots improve vision for long enough, you’ll start to believe it. An alternative In some cases, we may need to form judgement when we want to form friendships, or hire someone – in which case: The intention is good We should find enough information (their childhood, CV’s, education etc) The end goal should be productive Additionally, and undoubtedly, isolation is a recipe for disaster. We need to know our weaknesses and flaws, and have them evaluated, or pointed out if you’d like, without too much bias. It’s not difficult. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy. Receive wounds from friends, not foes. Receive kisses from friends, not foes. Make sure your friends aren’t foes. We need to take a better approach to how we source validation and energy; I can’t boast having the answers to this – but I can be sure to say that sourcing them externally to keep emotionally afloat, is a great danger. And if we’re going continue towards the populated future caring more for our gardens than the availability of drinking water – I’m pessimistic. We don’t need all these stamps of approval – the likes, the shares, the comments from strangers and the illusions of grandeur! Of course, you may be a model or entertainer, in which case these propel your goals, but it’s important to realize everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. The Elon Musks and Oprah Winfrey’s weren’t given 48 – but their passion dictated how their time was spent. Days to day zero: 90 days Days to dream realization: unknown_t + time_wasted_on_the_unnecessary |

For those reasons, listening to, not just forming, opinions is a waste of time.\n\nIf you’re told that carrots improve vision for long enough, you’ll start to believe it.\n\nAn alternative\nIn some cases, we may need to form judgement when we want to form friendships, or hire someone – in which case:\n\nThe intention is good\nWe should find enough information (their childhood, CV’s, education etc)\nThe end goal should be productive\nAdditionally, and undoubtedly, isolation is a recipe for disaster. We need to know our weaknesses and flaws, and have them evaluated, or pointed out if you’d like, without too much bias.\n\nIt’s not difficult. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy. Receive wounds from friends, not foes. Receive kisses from friends, not foes. Make sure your friends aren’t foes.\n\nWe need to take a better approach to how we source validation and energy; I can’t boast having the answers to this – but I can be sure to say that sourcing them externally to keep emotionally afloat, is a great danger. And if we’re going continue towards the populated future caring more for our gardens than the availability of drinking water – I’m pessimistic.\n\nWe don’t need all these stamps of approval – the likes, the shares, the comments from strangers and the illusions of grandeur! Of course, you may be a model or entertainer, in which case these propel your goals, but it’s important to realize everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. The Elon Musks and Oprah Winfrey’s weren’t given 48 – but their passion dictated how their time was spent.\n\nDays to day zero:\n\n90 days\n\nDays to dream realization:\n\nunknown_t + time_wasted_on_the_unnecessary",

| body | The smart man learns from his own mistakes, the wise man learns from the mistakes of others, but the stupid man never learns. I never go a day without thinking: “What on earth am I doing wrong!?”, and sometimes, to my neighbours’ confusion, loudly exclaiming it! Of course, with a few bad words here or there. It’s probably so, because this is common practice among software developers when things aren’t working . I have to appreciate how it changes people’s psychology to run into so many mistakes on the daily, almost to breed the mentality of: “I’ve made so many mistakes, this shouldn’t be one I can’t solve; this isn’t the one to stop me!” Everytime I make a mistake, I almost feel my future presence behind me: “Good. Good. Let the hate flow through you. Learn. Learn the hard way – it’s how we got here” I looked at some of the most influential things that some of the most influential people said about success. Most of which were from either computer programmers, engineers, creatives or people who had harsh backgrounds that seemed inescapable. I picked up a trend on their appreciation for mistakes and failure – and how surprisingly human they were in talking about them. Words by billionaires And my interpretations Elon Musk (CEO of SpaceX & Tesla; The Prince that was Promised) “The single best piece of advice: Constantly think about how you could be doing things better and questioning yourself” We die, not only when we succumb to the delusion there is nothing left of ourselves to improve, but when we become grandiose and blow our whistles forgetting about the areas that are overdue for improvement. I understand this quote as assuming that we always have areas overdue for improvement – and that we should assume that. Our starting point is knowing those areas – and our goal is to find ways to improve them. Key words: find ways. Bill Gates (My role model – that’s all you need to know) “Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.” Bill Gates is strong on the idea that it’s not getting something right that should be rewarded, but the process of struggling through the challenge and beating it. In a video that was shared on his facebook page (that I can’t seem to find), a tip was given to parents that if a child is doing extremely well without effort, it is unhealthy to reaffirm that they are ‘genius’ and not present them with tougher challenges. I’ve learnt that the real world is much much tougher than cramming words and equations and spitting them out on paper. If you think trying to convince yourself to work is difficult – try convincing another person. This is why C students become the bosses. J.K. Rowling (British Novelist – Harry Potter) “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default” Since she makes a living off of it, her words articulate the idea way more than mine could. If you’re not failing often, you’ve failed. Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook) “The biggest risk is not taking any risk. In a world that’s changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks” Seems like the Winklevoss twins aren’t the only people Zuck took ideas from. This is the same sentiment shared by J.K. Rowling. It appreciates how rapidly the word is changing – and demands us to take risks, and learn very very quickly – so that we may take on more risks with less likelihood to fail. Honorable mentions “I have had all of the disadvantages required for success” – Larry Ellison (CTO of Oracle) “No matter what your current condition, how or where you grew up, or what education or training you feel you lack. You can be successful in your chosen endeavor. It is spirit, fortitude, and hardiness that matter more than where you start.” – Jack Ma (Founder of Alibaba) My personal favourites “The most dangerous poison is the feeling of achievement. The antidote is to, every evening, think what can be done better tomorrow” – Ingvar Kamprad (Founder of IKEA) “You don’t learn to walk by following the rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” – Richard Branson The take away There are a lot of requirements for success – and the game isn’t written down in paper either; but two sure things you cannot go without is continuous hard work and adaptability. Continuous work drags you across failure, and adaptability makes sure the ‘failure’ is meaningful. For myself, perhaps – on top of “What on earth am I doing wrong!?”, I should add: “What can I do better tomorrow?”, and pester myself with that question until I’m poised to be better, and continue on the path of improvement. |

| body | This morning, I left for a job interview in a rather good mood. I’m back now, with red eyes – fuming with anger. I made my way home like an incandescent meteor pushing everything out of its way, refusing to let anything stop its collision with the planet. The reason I’m angry is because: Everything was perfect. The people were amazing and the culture was amazing. They employ north of a thousand people, and everything was perfect. At 9AM, people were faced towards their coworkers in intense conversation – or towards their diaries, notebooks and computer screens – being productive – ready to go on until after 4PM and repeating the cycle the next day. For a short break, a large group got up and sang happy birthday to one of their co-workers. A vibrant culture, yet rigorous and deserving of all the respect I have to give. What I saw, today, was people’s capacity to work; As if the world spat in my face to show me reality. My anger I’m angry, and disappointed, at myself more than anything. I made a terrible mistake – and I must hold myself accountable for it – to not realize your failures is the biggest failure. When I entered into the world of entrepreneurship, I shared a sentiment that most people share: “I don’t want to die working for someone else’s dream,” “I don’t want to work from 9-5, being imprisoned by a salary.” The truth is, a lot of entrepreneurs share this sentiment – but what leaves their mouth is not what is reflected in their hearts. Cut the sentences in half, and you’ll understand what they mean: “I don’t want to die working, ” and “I don’t want to work from 9-5” Well…past Wisani – screw you for thinking that. Present Wisani – thank you for realising the great flaw in that. Future Wisani – I promise I’ll be better. My experience All the interviews I went through in the last week had opinions about startups. Some good, some bad – but mostly bad. Even though they would say things like: “We understand the startup life – sleepless nights for a month, and a one day break.” In the back of my mind I was thinking: “Oh, is that the norm!? Sure I’ve had some, but I can’t even say people in startups, in my experience, even compare to how hard people in this building are working!” Before going on a rampage, I must say that I’ve worked with very hard workers who come in at 9AM and leave at midnight – even resisting to leave sometimes, in order to perfect something – and I value those people. The rampage The truth is, with a deep sigh of helplessness (and not with the goal of pointing fingers – but to give a reality check, and constructive criticism to entrepreneurs) – I’ve worked with entrepreneurs that take week long breaks at a time – and even with those who can’t put measurable results on the table after months of initiation. My refrainment is about to break loose from going ahead and using all the bad words I can think of. This is how hotheaded I am. A founder, especially at startup, is supposed to take on the roles of more than three 9-5 workers. A founder should have results everyday. I mean that. “This is what I did yesterday – these are the trends I found yesterday – here are the milestones I’ve reached – here is my progress with the KPIs” My resolve My biggest dissappointment is this: “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” If you try to revive a dead horse for too long, the rot will begin to infest you. It’s the rule of averaging – if a price of something has gone too high above it’s average – you can be very sure that the price and average will begin to converge. The average must either increase, or the price must decrease. Sometimes you should accept that the horse is too heavy. And still, the quote that is ringing in my head with no sign of stopping is: “Letting the wrong people hang around is unfair to all the right people, as they inevitably find themselves compensating for the inadequacies of the wrong people.” The questions I left asking myself today were: “When last did I have an all-nighter working on something?”, “Has my demotivation consumed me?” When I see all these good and hard people working on a cycle – can I, to avoid hypocrisy, NOT be the wrong person?” I cannot live with compensating for the inadequacies of the wrong people, and I cannot live with knowing others are compensating for my inadequacies. I shouldn’t aim to be below 9-5, I should aim to be consistently be above it! I should WANT to work 9am-8pm for others’ dreams, because this means I’ll be able to do the same, if not more, for MY dream. So my resolve, accepting my mistakes – is a hard reset. I need to be better, I can’t let anything get in the way of that – or else, I can only dream of bringing positive change to millions of people. I’m a fool if I think what I’m doing is enough. I must reset. “The single best piece of advice: Constantly think about how you could be doing things better and questioning yourself” – Elon Musk “Life is too short to hangout with people who aren’t resourceful” – Jeff Bezos It’s bit harsh what Jeff says, but he’s right. The more we do this -the less we grow – and the less our capacity is to be resourceful to others, and thus, the less our chances for being connected to opportunities, dealing a huge blow to our chances for success. The more we laze around and do nothing, the longer injustice thrives – and the longer real people suffer. |
