I work during the week, and I shoot portraits on the weekend. I did travel quite a lot, so although I currently live in Shanghai, I haven’t had the time to visit tons of locations on my ever growing “places to shoot in Shanghai” list.\n\nFebruary in China is the Chinese New Year month. The entire country pretty much shuts down for more than a week in an already short month. I finally have some days off, so it is time to go out and hit that shutter button! I did spend two days straight binge watching both seasons of Ghost in the Shell anime. I end up doing two shoots there, once when it rained and once when it didn’t. I defiantly prefer East Nanjing Road in the rain. I put those LED lights to work again. Yarina is a tech & fashion blogger that puts out kickass contents. (you can checkout her blog here) The two different looks that she put together were very on point. When I thought about locations that can be very colorful, I thought about an old-school Arcade. Luckily there are still few left in Shanghai.       "body": "The harsh winter cold is not the best weather for someone like myself, who prefers to shoot outdoors with natural light. When I started shooting portraits, one of the things that made it very enjoyable to me was discovering new places in the city. Shooting in a studio is not really my thing. Luckily, I was able to take a short trip to Singapore at the end of January. After doing some very tourist things, I decided to do a shoot at Gardens by the Bay. Gardens by the Bay is right next to the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. I have to say, the insane architectures in Asia are incredibly fascinating to me. The Marina Bay Sands Hotel is literally this insane alien spaceship/boat looking hotel in the middle of the city. When I told her my #milliondollarportrait project, she said yes and was kind enough to come out and show me around. Gardens by the Bar was larger than I expected. I chose this location because I was fascinated by the Supertree Grove. We were able to get some shots with the Supertree as well as other spots in the garden. Overall, I had a great time visiting and doing the shoot. It was a learning experience setting up the lights to create a neon look, I am not 100% happy with how things turned out, but at least I learned. Laure was also kind enough to add on S$2 for the shoot, which brings my total amount made during this Singapore trip to S$7. Singapore was a good place for me to start doing shoots again after a short break.       "body": "Thanks man. I think Lightroom is pretty intuitive and I remember the Adobe photography account with PS and LR is only $10-$15 a month, not bad.  \nI am shooting with Canon 80d, but been itching to go with A7R3. Need to shoot wider and in low light lol.",

      "body": "When my friend Dennis first introduces Adobe Lightroom to me, I was amazed. My understanding of photo editing at the time stops at contrast and brightness. So my mind was pretty much blown when he showed me you could change the entire group of colors in the HSL panel. It would take me another eight months to finally learn more about Lightroom and start playing with Split Toning and Camera Calibrations. \n\nLightroom is amazing. I was not intimidated by it like I was with Photoshop. Even though I was learning very exaggerated edits, in the beginning, it still feels like I was doing photography. I probably spent 90% of energy learning how to edit during the first three months after picking up a camera. So the question occurs to me. After that 5-hour marathon editing session on the train back from Beijing, I told myself to focus more on getting the shot. I was shooting at a new location at a new city. I saw this place on Instagram. I came, I liked the backgrounds, but it was obvious I needed another light source on the model. I did not bring any lights, and I went with the shoot anyways. I believe I can just paint the exposure onto my model in the post and everything would be great. I have done it before, and I can do it again. Well this time, the low exposure was too difficult to overcome. \nI spent way too much time to make the shots to look barely ok. \n\nAfter that shoot in Beijing, I learned a lesson. I start to spend more time planning and be more thoughtful when I take a shot. My flow was going towards a more shot-focused process and then the winter hits. I have been mostly shooting outdoors using natural light. The cruel winter blows do not make that easy for anyone to spend time outside. It is a very intriguing concept where participants are given access to Ivan's raw images and feel free to edit however they like. This contest was perfect for my month-long editing withdraw. I picked some of the images and did my edits. Honestly, they turned out to be some of my favorite edits. I was able to feel like I created something great without going out and be the person that presses the shutter button. With that feeling, the question occurs again.
