| title | No, Republicans Did Not "Win" in the Senate Today. I'll Explain. |
| body | The American political system is somewhat convoluted. For example, most would assume that the Republican party gaining 3 seats in the Senate is indicative of their having a lot of political support. At the very least, they must be holding their own, right? Well, no. Actually, the GOP just suffered a humiliating defeat. So, wait, what the f----? Okay, so, the 100 U.S. Senate seats are divided into three “classes,” and only one of those three classes goes up for re-election each two years, providing for six-year terms. The current Senate is comprised of senators elected this time, last time, and the time before that. This election cycle was Class 1’s turn. Of the 33 seats, Democrats won 20 of them, Republicans won 11, and two went to independent candidates who caucus with the Democrats. So, the Republican team was brutally trounced, and straggled in at a one-third minority of the available seats. Democratic caucus picked up a supermajority of available seats, the American holy grail of a political mandate. As a kicker, this is a midterm election, when Republicans traditionally fare better. So, what the heck are these “divided country” headlines about, and how in Washington’s name did the GOP *gain* seats? Well, it’s not that complicated. Last time Class 1 had their turn in the cycle was 2012, when the Republican party lost a staggering 14 seats to the Democrats. So when we started the election in 2018, they only *had* 8 out of the 33 seats. For them to do so poorly this time that they came in at 11 out of 33 is actually almost a 50% gain from last time. Their crushing defeat this cycle has just *still* been overshadowed by the magnitude of their preceding whalloping. And now, the tables have turned. For each of the next *two* Senate classes, the Republican party will have to defend roughly twice as many seats as the Democrats (sounds expensive) -- a consequence of their own resounding successes in the elections two and four years ago respectively. It’s worse for them than it looks. The remaining 23 Democratic senators up for re-election are among the hardest to unseat -- they already survived at least one major culling of their party. In contrast, many of the 44 Republican senators up for re-election over the next four years are the most vulnerable, many in swing districts that they barely won for the first time last election, with the political winds on their side. The Democrats are now poised next election to take decisive control of the entire legislative branch and quite likely the executive branch, and to hold the Senate during the following midterm. It’s going to be amazing watching them blow it all to hell and lose somehow. |

| title | Why Recessions Happen |
| body | The life blood of an economy is its money supply. And, the money supply is literally determined by how freely banks make loans. Loan applications are determined based on present and projected conditions. That is, the bank looks at a person's employment and income history, assets, and outstanding loans and liabilities and calculates how likely that person is to default on a loan of a given amount. If the person is of a group who it believes will pay more in interest than they will default on, the bank approves the loan. However, when the bank predicts how much disposable income each person is likely to have, it has to make assumptions about future economic conditions. If a bank is too optimistic, it will give out many loans people cannot repay. When they inevitably default on their loans, the bank can often *lose* money in total. If a lot of people default simultaneously for high enough amounts, it has the potential to send a bank itself into default. This is what happened in 2008, for example. Banks had made ridiculously optimistic loans, through crazy mortgages and refinances, as well as credit cards, and when it came time to collect, nobody had the funds to repay them, or even assets worth enough to repossess to recoup the loss. This absence of expected revenue quickly toppled aggressive banks who had played fast and loose with everyone's savings, and as they went under, other banks whom they owed money to found themselves being pulled toward the abyss in the wake of their sinking peers. To protect themselves (and their customers) in these turbulent conditions, every bank still standing tightens up their loan processes, carefully screening out all but the very least risky applicants, and charging even them a high interest rate. As credit dries up, two things happen simultaneously: 1) Business expansion becomes very expensive and unprofitable, due to high interest rates. New job openings become rare. Additionally, businesses that had been running on credit suddenly can’t run anymore. They close down, and their employees are all fired. 2) At the same time, individual people are denied cheap credit, as well. Home loans, car loans, and even credit cards all raise their rates, squeezing people’s purchasing power right when they are losing employment opportunities. 1 again) As people lose their jobs and credit, they are unable to afford purchases. As a result, businesses receive less revenue. Those on the edge fail, and their employees are laid off. 2 again) More people lose their jobs and credit. Their consumption falls. Rinse and repeat. This process continues until every bad credit risk has been purged from the books, the creditors of those debts have taken huge losses, labor becomes cheap, rent drops low, and competition is scarce. These four factors will make investment supremely profitable, and are likely to reverse the recessionary trend. The same forces that unwound the economy begin, in reverse, to wind it up again. The United States is once again facing a major credit crisis. This time, instead of unreasonably optimistic mortgage payments, banks have been counting on unreasonably optimistic college loan payments. As it becomes increasingly clear that the latest batch of college goers accumulated historically high debt *and* historically low wages, the expectation that they will be able to pay back their loans while simultaneously contributing historically comparable levels of consumption to the economy is absurd. Students are not going to pay back their loans, and even if they do, it will be at the expense of the other industries that are relying on spending to follow demographic trends of the past. The reckoning for inefficient college training is at hand, and because of the way debt is leveraged into more debt, the whole world economy may stagnate as this charade comes cascading down. Likely, the end result is going to be massive inflation by the Federal Reserve to stimulate economic “growth,” and, “coincidentally,” reduce the effective value of all debts owed. And, of course, what does inflation in the U.S. mean for Steemit? Well… perhaps I won’t suffer as much as my compatriots. |

| body | I never said small shifts don't matter. I said we shouldn't call a small shift a big shift. You don't exaggerate and report an extra big earthquake to scare people into reacting "appropriately" when there's a big earthquake. You report the earthquake accurately and you educate people so that they understand the implications without any need for misinformation. Will Kavanaugh probably be more conservative than Kennedy was? Yeah, that's the general consensus. But, not that much. In these kinds of cases, the middle is always somebody who is making a compromise between the two sides on a complex issue. If Kavanaugh is a little more conservative than Kennedy was, he'll push his compromises a little further rightward, but they will still be compromises. Small changes to the right matter. Accurate, honest reporting matters. Is that really so much to ask from the premier newspapers in America? The truth should be enough. No need for embellishments or exaggerations. |

| body | Underlying your post is the substantive issue that Brett Kavanaugh will make no difference or that the difference does not matter. I contested that view two ways: 1. The Court is already too conservative, as indicated by most of the cases I cited, and 2. It makes a difference, as described with a specific example in the paragraph beginning, "Each movement to the right matters." Brett Kavanaugh is expected to be more reactionary than Anthony Kennedy on abortion rights. Brett Kavanaugh is also expected to be more willing to allow politicians to choose their voters in 'extreme partisan gerrymandering' cases than Anthony Kennedy. Brett Kavanaugh is expected to be less willing to uphold the ancient right of habeas corpus than Anthony Kennedy, and would swing the Court against it. In 2008, in a 5-4 decision upholding habeas corpus, Anthony Kennedy was the swing vote to keep it alive. Brett Kavanaugh is expected to support the new Constitutional philosophy that corporations have religious rights, and may used those rights to block employees or consumers from legal protection or benefits, as was done in the Hobby Lobby case. Brett Kavanaugh is expected to oppose the recent gay marriage rights case where Anthony Kennedy was the deciding 5-4 vote; and since this precedent is recent, he could overturn it. There are a few differences. |

| body | This coin is based on a hybrid model of centralized app with decentralized mining. It is unique in this regard, as far as I can tell. The main appeal of this is that it allows for executive decisions to be made regarding things like forks and reversing fraud or recovering lost funds. ETN is a coin that is targeted toward mass adoption, and it will not see much price appreciation unless and until it starts to be adopted by masses of people. Their gimmick to give away mining rewards to every user turned out to be as impossible as it sounded, and phone app firms have so far not opted to try to use crypto as an in-game currency, so mass adoption has not happened as they had hoped. For this coin to reach $1 would represent growth of 10,000%. This is completely unreasonable to expect. If it does explode, ETN will likely grow AFTER a revival of the crypto market in general, because it requires the uninitiated public to take note, or else it won't be anything. |

| body | What does any of this have to do with Kavanaugh? In what ways is he expected to be more conservative than Kennedy? If he isn't expected to be, then the conservative shift already happened long before this appointment. If he is expected to be, then why didn't the NYT put it in their report? This post is about how the New York Times is full of it. I don't have high standards for politicians. I have very high standards for "respected" newspapers. The NYT routinely fails to meet minimal standards for honest reporting. |

| body | The chart shown here depicts *relative* ideologies. It does not show the overall Court ideology. The Supreme Court in total has become more conservative over time. It has gone so far that it is now reactionary. Reactionaries are conservatives who want to turn back the clock and revert to the past. Examples: A 5-4 decision just overturned 40 year old precedent to block unions from collecting fees from all their members. This is ironic because unions are created and leadership is elected on a one-person-one-vote basis. On the other hand, a recent 5-4 decision guaranteed the rights of all corporations to spend unlimited and undisclosed money for elections, despite the fact that corporations are not democratic. This is the case of *Citizens United*. A few years later, a 5-4 decision protected *Hobby Lobby* by allowing the company to deny general health benefit rights to women. Here's how it works. Women may be denied health services that may be connected to contraception or abortion, whether they use those services for that reason or for other health reasons. Women must then pick up a separate policy for women's health. Another 5-4 decision, going back to 1990, completely eliminated any requirement for Fourth Amendment cause by upholding random sobriety checks. The legendary Antonin Scalia wrote this decision. Some 15 years later, another 5-4 decision reversed prior precedent to allow the police to break and enter into people's homes in violation of the Fourth Amendment. In this case, Antonin Scalia (again) literally admitted the police violated the Constitution, but then he said that the Court could not enforce it. In 2010, on the heels of the infamous *Citizens United* decision, a 6-3 partisan Court, six Republicans for, three Democrats against, said that people could go to prison for long periods if they dared to advise so-called terrorist groups to give up terror. Jimmy Carter was livid about this blatant free speech violation. In an early decision by the John Roberts Jr Court, a 5-4 decision came out defying *Brown v. Board* by making busing illegal without a court order. In 2011, a 5-4 Supreme Court overturned traditional state contract law and permitted AT&T to commit "unconscionable" fraud -- overcharging thousands of customers -- and disallowing the customers from suing on court or joining together in other civil action. Every man to himself against the conglomerate. Just this year, a 5-4 Supreme Court extended the AT&T case to employers. Now, people can't join together to sue or act jointly against employer wrongdoing. This is particularly egregious because the 1935 National Labor Relations Act specifically guarantees joint action and mutual aid. A few years ago, a 5-4 Supreme Court insisted that arrestees who would like to exercise their right to remain silent must speak to remain silent. Bizarre stuff. The Supreme Court just punted all of the 'extreme partisan gerrymandering' cases back. This means that states like Wisconsin -- where 52 percent of the people vote for Democrats but the legislature winds up 66 percent Republican -- remain for the 2018 election. Each movement to the right matters. For example, in 2000, a 5-4 Supreme Court overturned a state law banning abortion because it did not have enough protection for the life and health of the mother. At that time, the swing voter was Sandra Day O'Connor and Anthony Kennedy was in the solid block of four "conservatives." After O'Connor left, Kennedy became the swing voter. In the next abortion case, in 2007, the Court essentially reversed its position, allowing a similar law to stand. It is notable that the the 2007 decision was based upon a federal abortion ban, so there is no "blue state" exception. PEOPLE OUGHT TO KNOW MORE about the Supreme Court. They are doing all kinds of things that we rarely hear about. |

| title | Fake News: Justice Kavanaugh Would Hardly Change The Supreme Court At all |
| body | I don't understand the media narrative surrounding the appointment to Justice of Judge Kavanaugh. The narrative being, "this is going to transform the character of the Supreme Court to be dramatically more conservative!" According to these estimates, Justice Kavanaugh would be expected to be almost exactly in the same partisan space that Justice Kennedy was. That is, whereas Justice Thomas is around a score of 3, Gorsuch is 1, and Kennedy was 0.5, Kavanaugh is expected to be, like 0.75 In other words, this would move the average Justice score from around -0.33 to around -0.305. (Note: negative scores are "liberal," so the Court's average is liberal. However, the median is more relevant, because votes are binary, not proportional to distance from center) Median is expected to remain approximately the same, as Kennedy and Roberts were tied for it at 0.5, and now it's just Roberts there. So 0.5 is likely to remain the median. This is a very moderate shift toward conservatism, except that almost every Justice leans left after appointment, which would put Kavanaugh very likely around the 0.5 score Kennedy held. Also, note that Kennedy had a score between 0.5 and 1 for most of his term as Justice, with a very brief liberal lean during Obama's second term. In short, one of the conservative leaning "swing" voters is expected to swing "left" a little less often. Kavanaugh is probably a godsend for Democrats who control neither the Senate nor the Presidency, and therefore have little leverage to prevent confirmation of a much more conservative appointee. This is just about as little as a Court can shift when its center Justice is replaced. The headline claims the opposite of the data in their own report. I hate to say it, but...
