| title | Lee Chong Wei crashed out of 2017 Badminton World Championship! |
| body | Badminton fans worldwide were hit by a storm when Lee Chong Wei crashed out of the 1st round (Day 2) of the 2017 Badminton World Championship, losing to Brice Leverdez (21-19, 22-24, 21-17). Give credit where credit is due, the Frenchman played the match of his life, staying composed throughout the 75-minute pulsating match with no sign of fatigue. Keep in mind that some of Brice's previous attempts at major badminton arenas were thwarted by Chong Wei - twice in All England (2011 & 2017) and twice in France Open (2011 & 2015). Surely, that was a sweet revenge, especially at an event that meant so much to the Malaysian. To be fair, however, Brice already had the blueprint to beat Chong Wei, having beaten the Malaysian in 2016 Denmark Open. Hats off to him to doing it again! **Misbun's return coincided with early exit - blessing, curse or coincidence?** With the return of Misbun Sidek as his coach (along with Hendrawan), many had speculated that his long-time coach might give him the much-needed boost and tips to finally snatch the elusive World Championship title that has been missing from his resume. Let's dissect the match, shall we? **Game 1** The game started with little sign of an upset on the horizon. Chong Wei's lack of urgency allowed Brice to grab an 11-8 lead midway to the interval. Several rallies after the interval saw the Frenchman seizing a comfortable 15-10 lead before the Malaysian showed some urgency, reeling off the next 6 consecutive points. Then, both players went neck-to-neck for the next few points until Malaysian fans could finally heave a sign of relief when Chong Wei went up 19-18. That was when things began to shift: a brilliant push to Chong Wei's forehand rearcourt, an unforced error smash by the Malaysian, and then a thunderous smash by Brice saw the Frenchman closing out Game 1. There, my friends, was when the badminton fans caught a glimpse of a potential historic scalp. **Game 2** If you thought the Malaysian and his coaching staffs would make the right correction for Game 2, you can't be more wrong. The game looked as if the Frenchman had lost no momentum from Game 1, hitting winning smashes and showing good control of baseline and sideline lifts. In fact, the gap widened to as many as 16-9 and 18-13 in Brice's favor. Chong Wei looked dejected and outright disgusted, while Brice's confidence continued to skyrocket with each winning play. He even started signaling to the fans, almost to indicate that he had figured out the winning blueprint. What's worth noting here is that Brice did not have any coaching staff! So, he clearly must have cemented the blueprint in his mind. But hey, not so fast! Several lapses of concentration allowed Chong Wei back in the game. Having saved two match points, the Malaysian snatched 3 consecutive points as he closed out Game 2 (24-22). **Game 3** Having lost a game that he had commanding control throughout nearly the entire game, many (myself included) thought that the momentum must have shifted from the Frenchman to the Malaysian. Think about it, the latter had just recovered from a narrow loss, and was probably in a better physical condition for another grueling game. In fact, Chong Wei grabbed a comfortable 15-11 lead after the mid-game interval. But that was when Brice created history - he went on a 10-2 giant-killing run as he wrapped up the match, creating a major scalp in recent badminton history! Kudos to you, Brice! It was such a joy watching you play with such confidence, passion and determination! As for Chong Wei, I wrote an article two months ago, predicting why he may never win a world championship title, unless he and his coaching staffs made some necessary adjustments. Having watched so many of Chong Wei's games, I was certain that he wouldn't win it this year, but certainly did not expect him to crash out this early. To Chong Wei: I hope you would try again (and read my earlier post). To Brice: all the best to you in your upcoming matches! Continue to believe in yourself! |

| title | First-timer in New Zealand - North Island |
| body | I attended a science conference in New Zealand, and was able to spend a few days traveling around the North Island after the conference ended. In this post, I'll share with you some of the wonderful shots I took as a first-timer in New Zealand! *This **black sand beach** was right outside of the conference building in Napier!* *True to my identity, I checked out a local **vineyard** to see what grape varieties were planted!* *Driving around was fun! Took me a while to adjust to driving on the other side of the road.* *Couldn't pass up hiking in the countryside of **Hawke's Bay** with the perfect weather!* *After a few hours driving north, we arrived at the **Cathedral Cove**, Coromandel.* *Quite unexpectedly, there was a mini-waterfall on the other side of the cove!* *While driving on the interstate highway, we saw 3 sheep outside of the fence, trying to get back in!* *We made our way to Waitomo for its famous **glowworm caves**!* *The faint light was bioluminescence, emitted by glowworms to attract preys.* *We also visited **Te Puia** to check out some geysers and geothermal hot pools!* *Not too far away from Te Puia was **Wai-O-Tapu**, which was absolutely stunning!* The summary of our itinerary was: **Napier > Auckland > Coromandel > Rotorua > Waitomo > Napier** I knew there was no way we could visit the South Island during the 6-day post-conference trip, but I wish we had more time exploring the North Island to check out Te Mata Peak and Melbourne. Oh well, there's always next time! Stay tuned for more pictures! Till then, Steem on! |

| title | Why Lee Chong Wei may never win a World Championship title |
| body | Let me first clarify that I am a big fan of Lee Chong Wei. Of all the badminton players, I have watched and followed his games most frequently. It's exciting to watch his games, and even at the ripe age of 34, he is hardly showing any sign of slowing down. Chong Wei was known first for his defense, speed and counterattacks (before 2007), then for his consistency (2008 onwards), and followed by his noticeable ability to maintain high attacking plays (2009 onwards). Now, he is widely regarded as *one of the* most successful player in the history of the game. However, what's separating him from the legacies of Lin Dan, Chen Long and Taufik Hidayat are victories in the World Championship and the Olympics Games. Here, I will detail why he may never win a World Championship title, and offer suggestions on how that can be changed. **1. Shot selection and predictability** Most people would quickly admit that they enjoy watching Chong Wei's style of play. His mix of trickery, defense, counterattacks, drops, and smashes is truly entertaining. His repertoire has enabled him to demolish most players. That said, his shot selection, especially during crunch time, is a suspect. For example, his tendency to initiate net plays during critical moments were often exploited by Chinese players. Check out the games between Chong Wei and Lin Dan or Chen Long when the scores are upward of 15-15. I have been particularly bewildered at Chong Wei's predictable straight drop response when Lin Dan pushed the shuttle to his forehand backcourt. **2. Match progression throughout a tournament** From a grand scheme of a tournament, I dislike the way Chong Wei handles his matches. More often than not, he chose to demolish lower-rated players in the earlier rounds, rather than seizing the opportunity to adjust to court drift and lighting conditions. It's especially shocking when he faced his compatriots, showing absolutely no mercy as he put on a clinic! **3. Coaching staffs** The prevalence of points #1 and #2 throughout the years goes to show that the coaching staffs either never made adjustments, or never recognized the problems in the first place, both pointing to coaching incompetency. While Lin Dan and Xia Xuanze (Chinese coach) provided a blueprint on how to defeat Chong Wei, the Malaysian coaching staffs clearly have not come up with a counter-response, relying merely on Lin Dan's occasional dip in form. **4. Immense pressure from his country** Being the only reliable star in the men's singles department, Chong Wei has been bearing the enormous pressure of his nation to deliver Malaysia's first ever Olympics gold medal and a badminton world championship title. To make matters worse, the media and the press have been quick to criticize Chong Wei whenever he failed to close out a tight match. There has been little, if any, encouragement and consolation offered in the wake of his defeat. But, **all hope is not lost**. Here are areas to rectify: *1. Ignore media weeks before the world championship* Remain humble even if you have just won a prior tournament. Avoid speculating on what you would do next, or how you plan to adjust to certain players. The media just want to write something, and let them do the speculation. *2. Study the in-between moments* At this elite level, the game is more than just speed, strength and strategy. There is a huge psychological aspect. Learn how to manage moments like opponent requesting shuttle change (when he has the shuttle, or when you have the shuttle), court to be mopped, etc. *3. Study the Chinese players* Learn how they pace their games. Haven't you noticed how Lin Dan and Chen Long typically played a non-attacking game prior to the 11-point interval mark? Pace and intensity quickly pick up prior to the interval and after the 15-point mark. Also, see how they manage the match time by requesting court to be mopped, shuttle to be changed, and by holding up their hands just when you serve to disrupt your rhythm. *4. Be humble* So what if you have just thundered down a winning smash or played the perfect reverse sliced drop? Don't stare down at your opponents, lower-ranked or elite. Your gestures often indicated your insecurity and pride, which could be turned into a motivation for your opponent. Also, take your time acclimating to the court conditions in the earlier rounds when you face lower-rated players rather than rushing to demolish them. This will pay dividends to your stamina, court awareness and overall confidence. *5. Change the coaching staffs* Seriously, they need to go, or be switched to another department. Having the same coaching staffs without improvements to your games is a sign of comfort and complacency. Hire a foreign coach perhaps? I have made my case. I hope some, if not all, the changes would be made. Should you, by any chance, consider hiring me as your seasonal advisor, contact me with a private message here. Message to Chong Wei: **Wishing you only the best in the upcoming World Championship (August 21-27) in Glasgow, Scotland!** |

"body": "Let me first clarify that I am a big fan of Lee Chong Wei. Of all the badminton players, I have watched and followed his games most frequently. It's exciting to watch his games, and even at the ripe age of 34, he is hardly showing any sign of slowing down. Chong Wei was known first for his defense, speed and counterattacks (before 2007), then for his consistency (2008 onwards), and followed by his noticeable ability to maintain high attacking plays (2009 onwards). | title | Why Srikanth Kidambi is the Player to Beat! |
| body | Having just won two back-to-back tournaments, Srikanth Kidambi is currently the hottest men's singles badminton player! The Indian badminton star clinched the Indonesian Open last week, and followed it up with a victory in the Australian Open yesterday. Without going much into the details of his recent triumphs, let me point out why he is the most lethal badminton player. **1. Speed and attacking prowess** This is, by far, his biggest *obvious* asset. He covers the four corners extremely well, thereby allowing him to thunder down smashes and follow up with net kills or deceptive shots. Let me be clear that he is certainly not the only player with these abilities. Top players like Lin Dan, Chen Long and Lee Chong Wei are just as capable in these areas. But, this is what sets him apart from other players, who may be speedy and strong, but cannot consistently maintain that level throughout a match. **2. Shot selection and anticipation** By shot selection, I am referring to a player's ability to create shots that limit the opponent's attacking and counter-plays. Already in the top 4 of my list, his shot selection and anticipation are what set him apart from Lee Chong Wei. Throughout his matches against top players, he chose his shots wisely to increase his attacking chances. Just to clarify: this doesn't mean that a player has to create tight-spinning net shots to get lifts, which were typically in Chong Wei's matches during crunch time that were punished by top Chinese players. Contrary to this misconception, Srikanth kept his opponents guessing, by mixing up clears, drops and smashes (both straight- and cross-court) in his plays. In this area, his shot selection most closely resemble Taufik Hidayat's style (or Lin Dan's post-2014). **3. Net play** When opportunities arose for a *wise* net play, Srikanth normally capitalize on it to get a lift for his smash. Why did I emphasize *wise*? That's because not all net plays are wise! Many amateur and national players associate net plays with opportunities to get lifts for smashes. While that is correct to an extent, initiating net plays can backfire. Typically, a player who initiates a net play needs to have good touch/control, which means that there is a risk for unforced error. Once a net play is in motion, slicing/spinning the shuttlecock is actually easier for the opponent, who now has the advantage of getting a lift from the initiator. This is also my criticism for Chong Wei's play, which became a predictable game plan for Lin Dan and Chen Long, especially when the scores were tight. **4. Deception** This is the category that sets him apart from Chen Long. Don't get me wrong; Chen Long is on my top 3 list, but his style of play is not my cup of tea. Srikanth capitalizes on his assets by combining speed, attacking prowess and soft touches with deception. Sure, deception is routinely executed by top players like Chong Wei, Peter Gade, Taufik Hidayat and Lin Dan, but there is a tendency to over-play it, which means increased predictability to the opponent and hence poor shot selection. In my opinion, the Indian badminton star executed his deceptive shots well without the tendency of over-playing them. In my book, if his new coaches (from Indonesia) can keep him healthy, Srikanth would be the unofficial favorite to bag the upcoming **World Championship** title, and possibly be the **world number one** by the end of 2017. If you want, check out his recent games against: 1. Chen Long, Shi Yuqi and Son Wan Ho (Australian Open 2017) 2. Jan O Jorgensen and Son Wan Ho (Indonesian Open 2017) ... and the not-so-recent game: 3. Lin Dan (China Open 2014) - *the match to watch!* What do you think? Do you agree that Srikanth is on a roll, or is he merely on a good lapse of triumph? |
