titleBitcoin will co-exist with many billions of tokens that will represent self-issued credit
body

Bitcoin maximalists argue that the best token will win as it attracts more and more users due to the network effect, liquidity, security, immutability, community, developers etc…

Multi coiners advocate for many coins world where MariaCoin will compete with JoeCoin and there will be a few global coins and many local coins each having its own use.

I tend to agree with the viewpoint of Bitcoin maximalists that there will be only Bitcoin while the value of the rest will go to zero as no one will use other coins as Store of Value unless adequately compensated for the additional risk.

The idea is known as “Self-issued credit”. In the past, in markets, where gold supply was limited, people would issue a Credit Note to substitute for the gold. In such a note the person/company will write a credit note which can be exchanged for a specified good or service. For example: “I, John Smith, promise to work for 8 hours on 15th September 2018 in exchange for this note.” In this way, people who value John will buy such a note in advance with some discount and then use at the specified date to pay him for his work.

Due to the nature of such credit, such a system is trust based. In such a system bitcoin is used as Store of Value and as the ultimate measure base. It is also used for transactions where trust does not exist. However, for credit issuance and most day-to-day transactions, people use the credit notes issued by the relevant businesses. The system is similar to coupons where anyone is able to issue a coupon with a certain expiration date. Those coupons can be traded on the markets, but the coupon value is specified in Bitcoins.

However, one would ask — why should we complicate the matters? Why not just use Bitcoins for everything? What problem do we solve with self-issued credit? The answer is two-fold.

First, Bitcoin is cash and doesn’t provide any solution for credit issuance. One can imagine a bank issuing its own notes fractionally backed by Bitcoin reserves instead. However, such notes will not be backed by anything physical but only bank promises. But if holding the banknote is riskier than holding Bitcoin, one should be compensated for the risk. Now, how the bank can compensate for the risk? Can it pay interest? Not really as the bank cannot create Bitcoins out of the air. This leads us to the next issue.

What happens is — any credit that bears interest in the same coin is potentially unpayable. For the credit to be payable, the creditor should buy goods and services from the borrower. Then the borrower can use the profits to repay the debt with interest. However, if the debtor does not use the proceeds from interest payments to buy goods and services but instead re-invests it — loans can never be repaid as the goods producer will not be able to obtain the money to repay. In such a case the goods/services producer goes bankrupt and defaults on the loan which in turn sends shockwaves across the economy as one's obligation is someone’s else asset.

Let’s look at this situation where the producer uses self-issued credit instead of taking a loan from the bank based on fractionally reserved banknotes. The producer instead goes to the local bank and offers to sell say 120 Joe credit notes in exchange for 100 Bitcoins. The bank proceeds with investigating Joe’s credit history as well as his business revenues and arrives at the conclusion that such compensation is adequate. The two sides close the deal. Joe receives 100 Bitcoins which he can use finance the business operations. The bank receives 120 Joe credit notes which he sells to Joe’s customers with some profit margin. Joe customers buy the credit notes with some discount — say 95 cents on the dollar and use those to pay back Joe for goods and services he provides at 100 cents on the dollar.

Let’s imagine that Joe’s business has issues and Joe still has close. In such a case his credit notes will not be honored 100 cents on the dollars and Joe’s reputation will get a serious hit. However, since the credit notes cannot be used for re-investment and other loans and bear credit — no shock waves were created. No money was destroyed. Also, more importantly — it is totally clear who holds the bag — those who hold the Joes credit notes.

To summarize — I am Bitcoin maximalist but I do think that there will be many coins issued as credit notes. However, those coins will be backed by real goods/services and require trust.

\n
Let’s imagine that Joe’s business has issues and Joe still has close. In such a case his credit notes will not be honored 100 cents on the dollars and Joe’s reputation will get a serious hit. However, since the credit notes cannot be used for re-investment and other loans and bear credit — no shock waves were created. No money was destroyed. Also, more importantly — it is totally clear who holds the bag — those who hold the Joes credit notes.
\n
To summarize — I am Bitcoin maximalist but I do think that there will be many coins issued as credit notes. However, those coins will be backed by real goods/services and require trust.
\n
\n
",

titleSmart contracts and dApps make no sense
body

I just read another article promising the year 2018 to be the year of Ethereum. It mentioned the price, the leadership of Vitalik, virtues of Proof of Stake consensus algorithm vs Proof of Work and a few buzzwords like: Plasma, Sharding etc… This is typical for someone pushing Ethereum. Yet the author totally forgot to mention all those successful smart contracts/dApps that already exist… There are none? Maybe there’s a good reason for this. The reason — you can do cryptokitties as web app and no one will try to censor. Therefore, all the resources spent on de-centralizing the cryptokitties was wasted. All the CPU time spent on thousands of nodes to run the smart contract — was wasted. Because no one tried to stop those transactions. The only “innovation” of dApps is a massive subsidy for cloud infrastructure, so anyone can deploy his app to the cloud for symbolic one time fee and then let someone else to pay for maintenance and network bandwidth. And let the users to pay the fee per each call. But this is no sustainable. Whoever hosts Ethereum full nodes need to pay thousands of dollars per month (if not more) for the machines and the network bandwidth, and all this to be sure that no one double spent some shit coin or that no cryptokitties were stolen… But why..? The subsidy will end eventually. And the users don’t like to pay for the content. People like free stuff, even if it only looks free… This is why EOS offers “free” stuff, but token holders will pay the price via inflation. . And EOS does not pretend to be de-centralized, just host a few servers that sign transactions and you can scale almost infinitely. Because centralization = effectiveness. But let’s go back to smart contracts/dApps, do they make any sense at all? What is “smart contract”? A program deployed into the cloud, highly available and immutable, all this to allow people to trust it to be there when they need it to trust it will not steal their money. But then, how do you add new features? Fix bugs? You can’t, so smart contract, cannot be a “contract”. Or it should be something really dumb and thus get it all right and correct from the fist try. Now, what is dApp? Well, it is just a massively de-centralized web app. No claims to be totally immutable. So, why would you need a dApp? To de-centralize processes and create trust between parties don’t trust each other somewhat but not totally and not always. OK, so how do you trust the dApp? The devs will make sure it works as expected and the auditors will make sure they devs don’t lie. But then you just trust the devs and auditors. So, dApp can be implemented as a regular web app where auditors sign every build. Or maybe for transaction to be valid you demand that it will be signed by both the devs and auditors. Great, but we can do this with regular multi-signature contract on Bitcoin. Or, so called “scripless scripts”. We can eve do this over Lighning Network. So, IMO, smart contracts/dApps are just a very hyped non-sense. They don’t work and will not work. The only real use of censorship resistance is Store of Value, as governments will censor Store of Value if they only could. But maintaining the censorship resistance is really expensive, therefore, only very important transactions that can pay the fee to maintain massive copies on thens of thousands of nodes and serve it possibly forever over the network can actually be stored on the blockchain. This is why the fees cannot be zero. But really, do you think that your “coffee” transaction should be censorship resistant? This is the importance of Layer 2. Due to unique property of digital Store of Value, it is digital and bearer instrument at the same time, contrary to digital fiat which has counterparty risk and can be cancelled at a later date by the authorities. Lightning Network is a real breakthrough, it enables speed and scalability while still without requiring trusted third parties. So, in summary, smart contracts/dApps make no sense. Once can use multi-sig contracts over Lightning Network using “scriptless scripts” technique to run business logic over the network using predefined level of de-centralization without any need for fancy (and very buggy) programming languages and with more privacy.I hope this article helped you to understand the logic of Bitcoin Maximalism.

\n
",

bodyWhat have you ever coded? Do you really think myself and all these others who have coding experience and degrees would hang around Ohad for 2 years if he wasn't onto something? If you think what he is doing is so easy then I challenge you to go beat him to it. Someone please go build an equivalent to TML and I will jump all over it. You have to understand that the genius of Ohad Asor is not so much in his ability to code. Anyone can code once the design and specification is complete. The genius is in the 2 years of R&D that came up with that design! Just hacking together a parser? You're right, even I could do it as a hack. That doesn't mean I would get the design right which is where the actual challenge is. For instance with Early Parsers if you don't understand why these particular parsers parse in cubic time (worst case) which means if the input is twice as long then parsing takes eight times as long, or that the benefit of these parsers is that it can parse ANY language, then you will not even understand what TML is trying to do. To say anyone could it? It indicates to me that you don't actually understand what TML really is.

titleThe problem with Ethereum
bodyThere's only one problem with Ethereum - it makes no sense to put the computational logic on-chain. It is also wasteful to force every full node to run the logic, while it doesn't add security. DAO contract had a bug, the "attacker" issued a transaction with a script that was executed by all present full nodes yet it didn't prevent the exploit from happening. Because the nodes blindly trust the Ethereum Virtual Machine devs, the dApp devs and the auditors that reviewed the dApp code. So, if all three would just validate the transaction and sign it - similar to multi-sig contract - we would have the same result, with the similar level of trust while wasting a lot fewer resources. Want to trust even less - no problem - make 10 of 10 multi-sig contract. What we need to make smart contracts happen is a trusted blockchain to record the state of reality. We already have such a blockchain - this is Bitcoin. In some cases - where we want to make the output of the program to be censorship resistant - we might also need a decentralized storage - like Filecoin, StorJ, Sia, MaidSafe etc... Ethereum never maid any sense and the core devs explained this to Vitalik long time ago. He did it anyway. A few years later there's still no real dApps that are profitable or make sense.
