At the beginning of 2019 that number stood at 3.3 million and in 2020 they reached 4.3 million.\n\nIn the lockdowns and home traders in 2020, this meant that there were many people who wanted to get in on the Robinhood action. \n\n💴 Payment for Order Flow 💴\n\nThis is when a broker is paid by a third party to direct their orders to said third party. \n\nIt's a business practice that has been alive on Wall street for decades and is one of the predominant methods that retail brokers use to earn money.  \n\nBrokers are supposed to choose those brokers that give them the best execution but you can see the conflict of interest when they are being paid for this information. \n\nThere are SEC rules around PFOF disclosure. Robinhood breached these rules and hence the reason that they had to pay a $60m fine to the regulators. \n\n💴 Why Pay For Order Flow? 💴\n\nThey can arbitrage the rates between the spreads. \n\nBasically, they will buy or sell an asset between the bid-ask spread and capture the profit depending on whether the client placed a buy or sell order. \n\nHowever, the bulk of the money is made through knowing how trader's orders are positioned and trading against them. They can also front run some of those order by batching them. The bulk orders purchased will mean that they can sell to these buyers at a higher price.\n\n🤔 Impact of Regulation? 🤔\n\nThere are increasing calls from a number of regulators which could see more stringent rules placed on order flow. Hence, if there is any sort of regulation it could either ban it entirely or there could be strict reporting requirements for these users. \n\nThere is a significant risk to Robinhood's business model. They have highlighted this in their S1 filing where they state that they have no recourse from the market makers should they choose to cease their agreements. \n\nThere are also risks to Robinhood from the fact that they have had losses in the past and it is likely they could suffer these in the future. \n\n🤔 Why I love Defi 📈\n\nI love its transparent blockchain. Decentralised Finance or Defi is creating a world where you won't need a Robinhood or any other middleman for that matter. There is no central entity that can control what you do on it and, because it is built on an open source blockchain, you can see exactly what is going on. \n\nThere are no regulators that are determining how they function, they are governed by code only. Those based outside of the US will be glad to know that Coinbase accepts over 100 countries and people in every US State except Hawaii. \n\n💪 Supported Assets 💪\n\nIn short, Robinhood has a limited selection of just seven cryptos for trading. That includes Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Ethereum Classic and Litecoin. \n\nCoinbase has around 75 different cryptos on the shelves.\n\n🔒 Security 🔒\n\nCoinbase claims that not a single customer has lost funds due to a breach of the Coinbase or Coinbase Pro trading platform. This being said, users have been caught out by email account takeovers, SIM swap attacks and password breaches. That has led to some customers losing funds.\n\nThat’s why it is so important to take the security of your crypto exchange accounts seriously. \n\nThis being said, Coinbase does store 97% of user funds offline to protect against hacks. The other 3% is kept in insured hot wallets. Oh yes, USD cash balances for US residents are also covered up to $250k under FDIC insurance.\n\nRobinhood also stores the majority of customer crypto offline in cold storage. I have not been able to find the exact percentage. Chainlink's oracle technology was integrated into the Synthetix platform. \n\nBancor announced earlier this year that Bancor version 2 will have an automated market maker liquidity pool which will use Chainlink's price oracles.\n\nThe celcius network that has teamed up with Chainlink. They will use their Oracle's to help them determine their interest rates in a decentralised manner.\n\nThere has also been a recent announcement from two Tezos teams that they will be using Chainlink's network in order to reference offchain data in Tezos smart contracts.  \n\n📈️ Exchanges & Community 📈\n\nThey managed to secured a much coveted Coinbase Pro listing in June of last year. However, the main value of Altpocket is the ‘top lists’ where you can see the top performing traders on Altpocket according to their weekly, monthly or quarterly trading performance.\n\nYou can then see what coins they hold, the weightings and recent trades they have made if you click into the traders profile.
