Great schools, nice roads, and people with various expertise to help out during a variety of possible emergencies/community needs.  Maybe you also like to have certain rules be enforced by people who are fully aware of the rules in the community, in hopes to help keep communities safer and to help protect private property.  You also like to see people receive help!  You care about people who are less fortunate (i.e. people who are aging or struggling with disabilities and benefit from a safety net of support).\n2) You want a military to exist.  You want a team of experts with weapons to be able to protect you, your neighbors, your community in case the scale of threat of violence is too big for just you and your network of friends/family to handle.  Or maybe you want this team of experts to also help people who are in danger and in need of protection in other parts of the world.\n\nThese seem like 2 common reasons why people like and support government - they want: 1) an intricate web of services, and 2) a large scale security force (military) (OK, so maybe #2 sort of applies to #1, but I separated it because military is something that I perceive as a very large scale type of service).\n\nDid you know, all of these things are possible without government?  Have we forgotten the potential of the private sector??\n\nhttps://i.imgsafe.org/5f92499331.jpg\n\nImagine if there was no government, let's go over that list again:\n1) You want many services provided in your community?  Fantastic!  Private schools can be an ideal choice for families who are not homeschooling.  If public school (government funded school) is not an option, but people with low income want their kids to be able to go to school ~ great.  I think if enough people in a community come together, this can be manifested!  Make great schools happen ~ government is not required.  You want nice roads?  Great!  Let's have communities hire companies to build the roads.  Everyone who wants roads can chip in.  Communities with large corporations will definitely build some great roads.  Smaller communities (especially in areas of low income) might need to get more creative.  Moreover, why do you feel you need government to build and maintain roads??  You don't.  Let's move on.  You really want to live in a society or a community with certain rules that everyone agrees on and respects.  Great.  Make some rules!  Your community can decide and agree on a list of rules.  Figure it out in a voluntary way.  No need for government, no need for force or taxation.  There's more!  You care about people who are less fortunate and would benefit from a safety net of support.  Great.  Did you know you can help manifest these safety nets in your community (or on a very large scale)?  Charities and organizations can take care of this, if there are enough people and/or if there are enough resources in the community to provide a safety net, this can surely be manifested without a need for government.  How inspiring it would be to see a community get together, voluntarily, to help people in the community who need some help!\n2) You want a military.  Alright then, make it happen!  Get together with others who also want a military.  Help fund a private military or security force.  This can range from small scale security force in your neighborhood, to something much larger.  The people funding a security force/military can get organized and decide who should be in charge of certain decisions.  No need to fund with tax dollars!  There will be donations!  If people want something to happen, they can make it happen, without government.  Military/private security force is absolutely a possibility without government.\n\nhttps://i.imgsafe.org/5fb1fe08af.jpg\n\n\n\n\nPS.\nHey, I'd like to mention an uncommon reason why people want government:  outer space stuff.\nGuess what?\nWE DON'T NEED NASA!\nWE DON'T NEED GOVERNMENT!\nWe can focus on the private sector.\nRight now I am honing in on the Comet Research Group and the B612 Foundation (groups doing work that I think is valuable).  NASA funding comes from tax dollars, so, as an anarchist, I do not support NASA.\n\n...\nIs there something you want done in your community, or on a large scale in the world?  Great!  Help make it happen.  Help get it done.  For it is the PEOPLE who get stuff done.  Government doesn't need to exist for PEOPLE to accomplish great things and manifest flourishing societies.  I would love to see more folks focus their energies on the private sector!",

      "body": "If humans want to survive long-term, we need to be paying closer attention to the sky.\n\nWe've all heard about the extinction of the dinosaurs, but that was a long time ago.  People seem to perceive the threat of asteroids and comets as very abstract and rare, because the only \"scary\" or devastating story they've heard about occurred a vast 65-66 million years ago.  Yeah, that was a long time ago.  But asteroids have devastated life on Earth many times since then. \n\nI want to tell you about some more recent asteroid impacts (the list is much longer than this).\n\n*Between 20,000 to 50,000 years ago, a small asteroid about 80 feet in diameter impacted the Earth and formed a crater that measures 1.2 km in diameter.  You can take a look at this meteorite crater yourself, it is very well preserved and is located in northern Arizona, U.S.A.  Imagine if another \"small\" asteroid like that hit a populated area in our modern era!\n![](http://eoimages.gsfc.nasa.gov/images/imagerecords/39000/39769/meteorcrater_aer_2007158_lrg.jpg)\n\n*Between 12,800 and 11,600 years ago it is likely that an enormous amount of humans (and animals living in North America at the time) were killed by a series of cataclysmic impacts, likely due to collisions with debris left behind by a comet.\n\n*Around 7,000 years ago, an inhabited island off the coast of Estonia was devastated by at least 9 meteor fragments. https://www.visitestonia.com/en/kaali-field-of-meteorite-craters\n\n*4,000 years ago an object from space likely created a 2 mile wide crater in southern Iraq.\n\n*Records show that in the year 1490 in Qìngyáng, China there were a large number of deaths caused by a meteor shower.  According to Wikipidia, \"At least three surviving Chinese historical records describe a shower during which \"stones fell like rain\", killing more than 10,000 people.\"\n\n*In 1908, 80 million trees were flattened by a meteor that exploded over Tunguska, Siberia.\n\n*In 2013 there was a blast of 600 kilotons over Chelyabinsk, Russia, many people were injured.\n\n\nSo, who is paying attention to this stuff?  Shouldn't we know when this stuff is coming - and where it will hit?  Who is keeping an eye on the skies for potentially hazardous objects?\n\nThis NASA graphic shared in 2013 shows the orbits of all known potentially hazardous asteroids:  \n![](http://www.space.com/images/i/000/031/771/original/potential-hazardous-asteroids-crop.jpg?interpolation=lanczos-none&downsize=*:1400)\n\nThere are a few government programs around the world that monitor for potentially hazardous near Earth objects, but I would like to take time to mention a privately funded organization.\n\n\"The B612 Foundation.\" https://b612foundation.org (I am in no way affiliated with the B612 Foundation, however, I want to share publicly that I support them).  The B612 Foundation is a private nonprofit foundation with headquarters in the United States, dedicated to planetary defense against asteroids and other near Earth object impacts.   According to CEO Ed Lu, \"While most large asteroids with the potential to destroy an entire country or continent have been detected, less than 10,000 of the more than a million dangerous asteroids with the potential to destroy an entire major metropolitan area have been found by all existing space or terrestrially-operated observatories.\"  Take a look at one of their videos if you want to see a visualization of how often meteors impact our planet:  https://vimeo.com/92478179\n\nIn the meantime, I don't want to bullsh*t you by saying that there is nothing to worry about, and that this threat is non-existent.  This is a real threat to humanity, and we truly have no idea when the next big impact will happen.  I am not suggesting we panic, but rather, focus on what can be done - let's be proactive.\n\nLet's find out what is out there, and when the next \"big one\" might reach us.  \nLet's find out ways to deflect these objects, before it's too late.  \n\nI think it would be wise for our species to establish 24/7 monitoring for near Earth objects utilizing multiple space-based infrared telescopes.  The B612 Foundation is planning to construct a space-based telescope - The Sentinel - which would help detect more hazardous near Earth objects.  Their goal is to have the telescope launched into orbit in the year 2018.\n\nWant to get in touch with your inner astronomer?  Get outside and look at the dynamic night sky!  The Perseid meteor shower - peaks this weekend - August 12th and 13th, 2016, and this year there it is expected to have an \"outburst\" of meteors.  This means you may be able to see up to 200 meteors per hour!  Let's hope they are all tiny fragments that burn up in the atmosphere. There are many things outside of the planet that could potentially wipe us out - for example, an asteroid.  I like to see privately funded organizations such as the B612 Foundation work toward protecting the Earth from hazards such as asteroids.  If we want to be able to go out and colonize other planets, we need to make sure our own planet, or our own species, is not obliterated by an asteroid, comet, or crazy solar activity in the meantime.  I believe that a majority of humans got wiped out a little over 10,000 years ago, thanks to what is referred to as the \"Clovis Comet.\"  Another devastating series of impacts happened more recently, search online for \"Bronze Age Impacts\" or Estonia meteorite craters.  Very interesting stuff if you have the time.  Our species is vulnerable, and I hope we are able to survive and evolve for many millions of years!",
