The bookmobile was travelling library often used to provide books to villages and city suburbs that had no library buildings. It went from a simple horse-drawn cart in the 19th century to large customised vehicles that became part of American culture and reached their height of popularity in the mid-twentieth century. One of the earliest mobile libraries in the United States was a mule-drawn wagon carrying wooden boxes of books. It was created in 1904 by the People’s Free Library of Chester County, South Carolina, and served the rural areas there. Another early mobile library service was developed by Mary Lemist Titcomb. As a librarian in Washington County, Maryland, Titcomb was concerned that the library was not reaching all the people it could. The annual report for 1902 listed 23 “branches”, each being a collection of 50 books in a case that was placed in a store or post office throughout the county. Realizing that even this did not reach the most rural residents, the Washington County Free Library began a “book wagon” in 1905, taking the library materials directly to people’s homes in remote parts of the county. With the rise of motorized transport in America, a pioneering librarian in 1920 named Sarah Byrd Askew began driving her specially outfitted Model T to provide library books to rural areas in New Jersey. The automobile remained rare, however, and in Minneapolis, the Hennepin County Public Library operated a horse-drawn book wagon starting in 1922. Following the Great Depression in the United States, a WPA effort from 1935 to 1943 called the Pack Horse Library Project covered the remote coves and mountainsides of Kentucky and nearby Appalachia, bringing books and similar supplies on foot and on hoof to those who could not make the trip to a library on their own. Sometimes these “packhorse librarians” relied on a centralized contact to help them distribute the materials. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OiOQJJ6hPUI/WyM8k1pq1mI/AAAAAAAAQWo/lAaxXQsluHcQZQC4pqYopGXCKApBYEWhwCLcBGAs/s1600/bookmobile%2B%25282%2529.jpg A bookmobile in Accra, Ghana, 1950s. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z1IFUlYPeUo/WyM8lFOxMWI/AAAAAAAAQWs/q8kmScsvcesfBu1EToCa273E2NIVNTG7ACLcBGAs/s1600/bookmobile%2B%25283%2529.jpg A bus with a view, 1967. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v0W-R2af5sE/WyM8lggT1VI/AAAAAAAAQWw/tFS3Uu91W_g2wSLW4hiS95Y0X4Ug6l5OwCLcBGAs/s1600/bookmobile%2B%25284%2529.jpg Bookmobile staff. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nsZe_XwWIk8/WyM8mIXTZaI/AAAAAAAAQW4/qD6jPptZiTA5zv57qWTPpIuP-l1eyTGIQCLcBGAs/s1600/bookmobile%2B%25285%2529.jpg Bookmobile in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. 170.770 volumes were circulated in 1936. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-y2UowwxvVi0/WyM8me9OsRI/AAAAAAAAQW0/1QiR0Snbet0Xeah188Xhc7-bAo60PfodwCLcBGAs/s1600/bookmobile%2B%25286%2529.jpg Inside a bookmobile, date unknown. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4MMwUR5R0NQ/WyM8mipUZzI/AAAAAAAAQXA/4pw4v-b41LoCTJZyKtfbwBZZmSAVZjCrACLcBGAs/s1600/bookmobile%2B%25287%2529.jpg An early bookmobile horse and cart in Washington D.C. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6a86Ljjr7YI/WyM8mmDr_KI/AAAAAAAAQXE/UFEwWehOWAwq6awXPyeM8YlnISiCfJe0QCLcBGAs/s1600/bookmobile%2B%25288%2529.jpg An impatient queue for a Dutch bookmobile. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8KAJLeqeg3I/WyM8moG9tHI/AAAAAAAAQXI/qN7ZfPnZG_I7YRsHw1mUbXEtmGqVAAZngCLcBGAs/s1600/bookmobile%2B%25289%2529.jpg Soldiers getting library books from a truck, Kelly Field Library, Texas, c. 1917. |

He was the 40th president of the United States, but first, he juggled monkeys for Hollywood. Ronald Reagan started his career in show business in Des Moines, Iowa as a radio announcer for baseball games. In 1937, while in Southern California to cover the Chicago Cubs’ spring training season, Ronald Reagan did a screen test for the Warner Brothers movie studio. The studio signed him to a contract, and that same year he made his film debut in “Love is on the Air,” playing a radio news reporter. Over the next three decades he appeared in more than 50 movies. Among his best-known roles was that of Notre Dame football star George Gipp in the 1940 biographical film “Knute Rockne All American.” In the movie, Reagan’s famous line–which he is still rememberd for–was “Win one for the Gipper”. Another notable role was in 1942 in “Kings Row,” in which Reagan portrayed an accident victim who wakes up to discover his legs have been amputated and cries out, “Where’s the rest of me?” (Reagan used this line as the title of his 1965 autobiography.) Although Reagan called Kings Row the film that “made me a star”, he was unable to capitalize on his success because he was ordered to active duty with the U.S. Army at San Francisco two months after its release, and never regained “star” status in motion pictures. In the post-war era, after being separated from almost four years of World War II stateside service with the 1st Motion Picture Unit in December 1945, Reagan co-starred in such films as The Voice of the Turtle, John Loves Mary, The Hasty Heart, Bedtime for Bonzo, Cattle Queen of Montana, Tennessee’s Partner, Hellcats of the Navy (the only film in which he appears with Nancy Reagan), and the 1964 remake The Killers (his final film). Throughout his film career, his mother answered much of his fan mail. From 1954 to 1962, he hosted the weekly television drama series “The General Electric Theater.” In this role, he toured the United States as a public relations representative for General Electric, giving pro-business talks in which he spoke out against too much government control and wasteful spending, central themes of his future political career. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-egW5NuKPBb4/WoaN2uzQr3I/AAAAAAAAPSs/BWfsVQEQvDcr_l2416gXG2rEX3TC_UAXQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25282%2529.jpg Reagan in The Bad Man. 1941. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m1GKeOn6s90/WoaN3XsolgI/AAAAAAAAPS4/IZCzbFfGUgUngXFUI5GPAdGG-NNPfLncwCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25283%2529.jpg Reagan performs in The Winning Team alongside Dorothy Adams and Doris Day. 1952. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9S7_6PSuZCA/WoaN3bmstJI/AAAAAAAAPS8/_MWETIWidh4iqCsA4tYQ1Fj4F-g2aawfgCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25284%2529.jpg Ronald Reagan and Barbara Stanwyck in a publicity still for Cattle Queen of Montana. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wpwEjfGNIDE/WoaN3t0OhyI/AAAAAAAAPTA/NnzPDSmRDtwO5NwAl8B13aHgFRhT75skQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25285%2529.jpg Reagan in Kings Row. 1942. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YyxNBb0pvRc/WoaN3tkrghI/AAAAAAAAPTE/tFGDuF9-0qYiVAUD6J-Z0aBonG2TAbmfwCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25286%2529.jpg Reagan performs with Cloris Leachman on an episode of Nash Airflyte Theater. 1950. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zO1a57H1dxY/WoaN3vdGpDI/AAAAAAAAPTI/x0-ZpbGMghUkIa-SWyyxP3YHKscK9KZIgCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25287%2529.jpg Reagan gets made up for an appearance on an episode of Nash Airflyte Theatre. 1950. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/---rm4x2V6-8/WoaN3i8rrqI/AAAAAAAAPTM/0CG3NCwpHs0MPUisllfr9nyqUGhu0aEcQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25288%2529.jpg Reagan performs with Cloris Leachman on an episode of Nash Airflyte Theater. 1950. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eZgxY0Oad7E/WoaN3xaTq6I/AAAAAAAAPTQ/n9D4euuF3YwhqSWUxkpr2iK6cznmfyr6QCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25289%2529.jpg Reagan poses in a promo still for Tropic Zone. 1953. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HFA89P2cRII/WoaN0qA47qI/AAAAAAAAPSI/D5Yjy_hUKaQvsz1Q6dgyEiXkuImAfTfLQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252810%2529.jpg Reagan performs on the television show Death Valley Days. 1955. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jxAd0KZn3qQ/WoaN0VwptUI/AAAAAAAAPSE/PZi5kfHyndEJFRdMorI-iqCH4Z8V_YtcACLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252811%2529.jpg Reagan and Virginia Mayo perform in She’s Working Her Way Through College. 1952. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tDZ6DORQn3U/WoaN1Fi6pxI/AAAAAAAAPSU/LVOtqw2CoCUV3FRPxAmBbPP4vfSrmVTUQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252812%2529.jpg Reagan feeds his simian costar in Bedtime for Bonzo. 1951. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aWuMehQNHYY/WoaN1HCMrSI/AAAAAAAAPSQ/OnLW7ags6fAo8XVI_c7vNEZ_JSxp2GApwCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252813%2529.jpg Reagan performs with Rhonda Fleming in The Last Outpost. 1951. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v0cfTbGn2sA/WoaN04lIjwI/AAAAAAAAPSM/g_7p2JzNMuQMjzYOoRxIcG-E4h-pE7wRACLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252814%2529.jpg Reagan and Barbara Stanwyck pose for a promo still for Cattle Queen of Montana. 1954. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8zKnSZhjCjM/WoaN1eDBiVI/AAAAAAAAPSY/oY8T9jGGTUgNFYrTI4nPr4ObggJOIFNCwCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252815%2529.jpg A promo still for Cattle Queen of Montana. 1954. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TnR1RTiuNpY/WoaN1UxyBGI/AAAAAAAAPSg/ecg2zxBccKwO9htN6UYBLWOZzWRrxwgNACLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252816%2529.jpg Reagan performs in the General Electric Theater CBS teleplay The Lord’s Dollar. 1958. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CCqW0QL2Yw8/WoaN2PkH03I/AAAAAAAAPSc/zvpxRjFjbw0-afSiGVlUBkPHi0Sn1dPqACLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252817%2529.jpg From a movie set. 1960. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CGcUtdlKYJw/WoaN2RO8jdI/AAAAAAAAPSk/xKv17EovHs0rIemW2hrtOmvkWVaYnkodgCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252818%2529.jpg From 1960. https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZTN4fgCwZMQ/WoaN2oUPv-I/AAAAAAAAPS0/FRJwD9LEiGIQ3iwczo31498qGnqNKU_zQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252820%2529.jpg 1955. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aOsd3B2Ts34/WoaN29vEqiI/AAAAAAAAPSw/31IXxuyZrjoCId9BNM1_ojgkO25zJGE6gCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252821%2529.jpg 1955. Over the next three decades he appeared in more than 50 movies.\n\nAmong his best-known roles was that of Notre Dame football star George Gipp in the 1940 biographical film “Knute Rockne All American.” In the movie, Reagan’s famous line–which he is still rememberd for–was “Win one for the Gipper”. Another notable role was in 1942 in “Kings Row,” in which Reagan portrayed an accident victim who wakes up to discover his legs have been amputated and cries out, “Where’s the rest of me?” (Reagan used this line as the title of his 1965 autobiography.)\n\nAlthough Reagan called Kings Row the film that “made me a star”, he was unable to capitalize on his success because he was ordered to active duty with the U.S. Throughout his film career, his mother answered much of his fan mail.\n\nFrom 1954 to 1962, he hosted the weekly television drama series “The General Electric Theater.” In this role, he toured the United States as a public relations representative for General Electric, giving pro-business talks in which he spoke out against too much government control and wasteful spending, central themes of his future political career.\n\nhttps://1.bp.blogspot.com/-egW5NuKPBb4/WoaN2uzQr3I/AAAAAAAAPSs/BWfsVQEQvDcr_l2416gXG2rEX3TC_UAXQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25282%2529.jpg\nReagan in The Bad Man. 1941.\n\nhttps://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m1GKeOn6s90/WoaN3XsolgI/AAAAAAAAPS4/IZCzbFfGUgUngXFUI5GPAdGG-NNPfLncwCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25283%2529.jpg\nReagan performs in The Winning Team alongside Dorothy Adams and Doris Day. 1952.\n\nhttps://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9S7_6PSuZCA/WoaN3bmstJI/AAAAAAAAPS8/_MWETIWidh4iqCsA4tYQ1Fj4F-g2aawfgCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25284%2529.jpg\nRonald Reagan and Barbara Stanwyck in a publicity still for Cattle Queen of Montana.\n\nhttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wpwEjfGNIDE/WoaN3t0OhyI/AAAAAAAAPTA/NnzPDSmRDtwO5NwAl8B13aHgFRhT75skQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25285%2529.jpg\nReagan in Kings Row. 1942.\n\nhttps://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YyxNBb0pvRc/WoaN3tkrghI/AAAAAAAAPTE/tFGDuF9-0qYiVAUD6J-Z0aBonG2TAbmfwCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25286%2529.jpg\nReagan performs with Cloris Leachman on an episode of Nash Airflyte Theater. 1950.\n\nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zO1a57H1dxY/WoaN3vdGpDI/AAAAAAAAPTI/x0-ZpbGMghUkIa-SWyyxP3YHKscK9KZIgCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25287%2529.jpg\nReagan gets made up for an appearance on an episode of Nash Airflyte Theatre. 1950.\n\nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/---rm4x2V6-8/WoaN3i8rrqI/AAAAAAAAPTM/0CG3NCwpHs0MPUisllfr9nyqUGhu0aEcQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25288%2529.jpg\nReagan performs with Cloris Leachman on an episode of Nash Airflyte Theater. 1950.\n\nhttps://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eZgxY0Oad7E/WoaN3xaTq6I/AAAAAAAAPTQ/n9D4euuF3YwhqSWUxkpr2iK6cznmfyr6QCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%25289%2529.jpg\nReagan poses in a promo still for Tropic Zone. 1953.\n\nhttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HFA89P2cRII/WoaN0qA47qI/AAAAAAAAPSI/D5Yjy_hUKaQvsz1Q6dgyEiXkuImAfTfLQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252810%2529.jpg\nReagan performs on the television show Death Valley Days. 1955.\n\nhttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jxAd0KZn3qQ/WoaN0VwptUI/AAAAAAAAPSE/PZi5kfHyndEJFRdMorI-iqCH4Z8V_YtcACLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252811%2529.jpg\nReagan and Virginia Mayo perform in She’s Working Her Way Through College. 1952.\n\nhttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tDZ6DORQn3U/WoaN1Fi6pxI/AAAAAAAAPSU/LVOtqw2CoCUV3FRPxAmBbPP4vfSrmVTUQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252812%2529.jpg\nReagan feeds his simian costar in Bedtime for Bonzo. 1951.\n\nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aWuMehQNHYY/WoaN1HCMrSI/AAAAAAAAPSQ/OnLW7ags6fAo8XVI_c7vNEZ_JSxp2GApwCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252813%2529.jpg\nReagan performs with Rhonda Fleming in The Last Outpost. 1951.\n\nhttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v0cfTbGn2sA/WoaN04lIjwI/AAAAAAAAPSM/g_7p2JzNMuQMjzYOoRxIcG-E4h-pE7wRACLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252814%2529.jpg\nReagan and Barbara Stanwyck pose for a promo still for Cattle Queen of Montana. 1954.\n\nhttps://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8zKnSZhjCjM/WoaN1eDBiVI/AAAAAAAAPSY/oY8T9jGGTUgNFYrTI4nPr4ObggJOIFNCwCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252815%2529.jpg\nA promo still for Cattle Queen of Montana. 1954.\n\nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TnR1RTiuNpY/WoaN1UxyBGI/AAAAAAAAPSg/ecg2zxBccKwO9htN6UYBLWOZzWRrxwgNACLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252816%2529.jpg\nReagan performs in the General Electric Theater CBS teleplay The Lord’s Dollar. 1958.\n\nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CCqW0QL2Yw8/WoaN2PkH03I/AAAAAAAAPSc/zvpxRjFjbw0-afSiGVlUBkPHi0Sn1dPqACLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252817%2529.jpg\nFrom a movie set. 1960.\n\nhttps://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CGcUtdlKYJw/WoaN2RO8jdI/AAAAAAAAPSk/xKv17EovHs0rIemW2hrtOmvkWVaYnkodgCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252818%2529.jpg\n From 1960.\n\nhttps://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZTN4fgCwZMQ/WoaN2oUPv-I/AAAAAAAAPS0/FRJwD9LEiGIQ3iwczo31498qGnqNKU_zQCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252820%2529.jpg\n 1955.\n\nhttps://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aOsd3B2Ts34/WoaN29vEqiI/AAAAAAAAPSw/31IXxuyZrjoCId9BNM1_ojgkO25zJGE6gCLcBGAs/s1600/When_Reagan_was_an_actor%2B%252821%2529.jpg\n 1955.\n\n(Photo credit: Image: GAMMA / Getty Images).",

| body | https://i.imgur.com/ZikdlZF.jpg In 1980 Mike Wells took this powerful photograph of a Catholic missionary holding the hand of a starving Ugandan boy. In so many ways it almost looks like the hand is not human. It’s almost the hand of a space alien, a different species, or anything but the hand of a human being. Unfortunately it can’t be ‘willed’ into being something else, it is the hand of a human being. A starving human being. Freelance photojournalist Mike Wells explained to Holland Herald magazine, in an interview after winning the World Press Photo of the Year award, that in 1980 he was in Africa working for the Save the Children Fund of the United Kingdom, covering their anti-polio campaign in Swaziland and Malawi. Wells made this image while on a side-trip to Uganda, at a seminary where the Verona Fathers were distributing food during the early days of the famine. One of the monks described the situation to Wells and told him that the Karamojong boy was around four years old. Food shortages in Karamoja began in July 1978, after drought, crop failure, and plant disease. Not being a region of great economic or political significance for the Ugandan government, President Idi Amin’s administration took no action after being alerted to the situation that year. Following the overthrow of Amin and the flight of his soldiers in 1979, Karamojong warriors acquired a large quantity of guns and ammunition. The influx of firearms drastically shifted regional power balances and cultural traditions around raiding. It became dangerous to move in and out of Karamoja with cattle or grain. In addition, national insecurity caused a complete breakdown of trade. Families started to run out of food in early 1980. The situation became critical in May and the famine reached its peak in July and August of the same year. In July, the Verona Fathers in Karamoja appealed to the World Food Program in Rome for urgent assistance. Catholic missionary activities had begun in the region in 1933, with the Catholic Church providing relief assistance during periods of famine since the 1960s. The photographer Mike Wells, who would later win the World Press Photo Award for this photo, admitted that he was ashamed to take the photo. The same publication that sat on his picture for five months without publishing it entered it into a competition. He was embarrassed to win as he never entered the competition himself, and was against winning prizes with pictures of people starving to death. (Photo credit: Mike Wells). |

After over twenty years of painting figurative art, concentrating on beauty …something has changed. The sociopolitical climate has shifted so horrifically that there is need to concentrate on art with a deeper meaning. Issues to do with racial injustices, feminism, body image, LGBTQ rights, and more have influenced my agenda. Kimberly Dow – Fine Artist “One works (paints) because I suppose it is the most interesting thing one knows how to do. The days one works (paints) are the best days. On the other days one is hurrying through the other things one imagines one has to do to keep one’s life going. You get the garden planted. You get the roof fixed. You take the dog to the vet. You spend a day with a friend. You learn to make a new kind of bread. You hunt up photographs for someone who thinks he needs them. You certainly have to do the shopping. You may even enjoy doing such things. You think they have to be done. You even think you have to have some visitors or take a trip to keep from getting queer living alone…(). But always, you are hurrying through these things with a certain amount of aggravation so that you can get at the painting again because that is the high spot – in a way it is what you do all the other things for…The painting is like a thread that runs through all the reasons for all the other things that make one’s life.” -Georgia O’Keefe www.kimberlydow,com | https://www.instagram.com/kimberlyrdow | https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1185422114 |

He takes photographs of bird droppings and transforms it into art. Using his Samsung Galaxy A3 phone and a free drawing App called ‘Sketch’ he outlines the art hidden all around us. He adds only black lines to the photographs using his right index finger. He hopes to inspire people to notice all the beauty around them and to realize that art could be created inexpensively. He mostly draws animals and believes that humans have lost intimate connections with other species, he hopes to bridge that gap through his art. ‘ I am fortunate to live in South Africa where our relationships with animals are stronger compared to other parts of the world purely because we exist in an area where you experience more interactions with animals.’ – Gustaf Swart. He currently shares his work on instagram. (@naturist_goose) |

They give another perspective on the period between 1943 and 1945 when Nazi Germany carried out a sustained aerial bombing campaign against Britain. Introduced as cinematic film in 1932 and roll film in 1935, Dufaycolor is an early French and British additive color photographic film process for motion pictures and stills photography. It was based on a four-color screen photographic process invented in 1908 by Frenchman Louis Dufay. Dufaycolor worked on the same principles as the Autochrome process, but achieved its result using a slightly different method. The film base was dyed blue, printed with a mosaic using a resistive greasy ink and bleached. The resulting spaces were then dyed green. The process was repeated at an angle, the new spaces being bleached and dyed red, forming a mosaic of color filters consisting of a mesh of red, green and blue lines, at approximately one million color elements per square inch, known as a reseau. When exposed to light through the reseau, the film’s emulsion was exposed to a single color of light. Thus the emulsion behind each color element recorded the tones for each primary color. Upon projection, the reseau served to filter the white projected light, so that the colors of the photograph corresponded to those in the recorded scene; for example, red values were only shown in red. The same principle applied to green and blue components. Though it was popular among professional and amateur photographers until the 1950s, Dufaycolor was ultimately surpassed by Kodachrome and other superior color processes. https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CqzSp5FuWOE/Wj8RSw2h7PI/AAAAAAAAO0E/pf1s6rCG1jk-33VFAav-ATMGQyDBQHciwCLcBGAs/s1600/London_in_Dufaycolor%2B%25282%2529.jpg St. Paul’s cathedral stands intact amid buildings destroyed by bombing. Colonel (later Brigadier General) Francis I. Fenton enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 1917. He gradually rose through the ranks until he became division engineer officer of the 1st Marine Division in July 1944. With this unit, Fenton won a Bronze Star for duty at Peleliu before landing on Okinawa. While Colonel Fenton advanced to higher command, his younger son, Michael, enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 17, 1943, and joined B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division – the same division in which his father commanded the engineers. Reportedly turning down a commission so he could fight at the front, Michael served as a scout-sniper (on) Okinawa. Father and son met once during the fighting when their paths crossed at a partially destroyed Okinawan farmhouse. After exchanging news from home, including information on Michael’s older brother, Francis, Jr., who had been commissioned a Marine officer in 1941, the two family members returned to their work. They would never talk again. On May 7, 1945, while beating back a Japanese counterattack not far from Sugar Loaf, 19-year-old Pfc. Michael Fenton was killed. When his father received the bitter news, he traveled to the site of his son’s death and knelt down to pray over the flagdraped body, a scene that produced one of the Pacific war’s most touching photographs. Upon arising, Colonel Fenton stared at the bodies of other Marine dead and said: ‘Those poor souls. They didn’t have their fathers here’. After the burial, Colonel Fenton returned to his headquarters and wrote a brief note to his wife, Mary, in San Diego. The soldier then resurfaced. Fenton fixed his attention on a large map hanging in his headquarters, studied it closely for a time, then said to his subordinate, “We’d better double the guard around No. 5 bridge. The Nips may try to blow it”. The war was back on. Mary Fenton learned of her son’s death before receiving her husband’s letter. In fact, she experienced a bittersweet two days when, on Wednesday, a telegram arrived from the Marine Corps Commandant informing her of Michael’s death. The very next day came news that her husband had been awarded a second Bronze Star. Mrs. Fenton told reporters she was proud that Michael had done his duty as a Marine. She quoted a recent letter from him in which the youth wrote that he ‘dedicated my life to my country’ and that he was ‘prepared to die”. Both Colonel Fenton and his older son survived the war. Mike’s body was later exhumed from his temporary grave and is now resting in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. (Photo credit: LIFE Magazine archives). |
