body![images-39.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRLnnAx6btaVHsevQreYSzy1Jp3wpWzLJkixKS2Pqapno/images-39.jpg One of the biggest issues facing humanity in this modern day, is the issue of child sexual abuse. This problem has proven to be global in nature, causing untold pain, trauma and psychological torture to both victims, parents and society. For me, this has always being personal, seeing this evil tear families and communities apart and feeling the lifelong effects change the trajectory of a person’s life. Child sexual abuse in Nigeria is one of those worst kept secrets, made worse by our African culture of silence and the fact that the African parenting styles have a lot to do with intimidation, manipulation and punishment. In the last two weeks, Nigeria, especially Port-Harcourt has been rocked by the story of Ifeanyi Dike, who raped, murdered and mutilated his 8 year old niece, and tried to dispose her remains in a sack bag in the middle of the night. This macabre story made waves because it ended in a gruesome death for a young, beautiful and innocent girl, but the biggest lesson learnt from that incident is that fact that this act was perpetrated by a trusted family member, who has carried this child as a baby, thereby earning her parent’s trust as a relative and a natural champion for this child. The statistics on child sexual abuse is alarming, and makes for sleepless nights and worrisome days. Ninety percent of the molestation cases involve the child’s relatives. Ninety percent. We used to think that this was a western phenomenon, simply because they were more open about it, victims came forward, some sued, the news and every media carried it. For us in Africa, we shroud unpleasantness in mystery and secrecy, using intimidation, shaming and stigma as weapons that enshrine our denial of reality. Our peculiar African notion of family and brotherhood, makes it worse for us, when we entrust the care of our young ones into the hands of cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, friends, acquaintances and in-laws, trusting them wholly to ensure their safety and well-being. This laissez faire attitude, puts the child at enormous risk, leaving them at the mercy of care givers who have little or no oversight. The matter is further complicated when a child reports inappropriate behavior and gets punished for being in that situation in the first place. While growing up, I still remember severe beatings and punishment which was meted out to me because I found myself in compromising situations with ‘uncles’ who had known history as child molesters. I got the brunt of the punishment because my mother believed I should have been sensible enough not to allow myself be lured into their houses. This gap in parent-child communication has accounted for the gap in intervention in child molestation cases. It is obvious that in Africa, we find it very difficult to differentiate childhood from adulthood. If African children begin to talk about childhood experiences, it is obvious that our region will be declared a human and child rights disaster and  emergency area. We need to be more proactive in forestalling sexual abuse before it happens and arm ourselves adequately to deal with the fall out after it happens. Girls are not the only ones at risk, cases abound where boys are molested by uncles, care givers, and even the clergy. The dangers abound and we cannot just relax and trust everyone around us to be normal and sane We all have stories of uncles rubbing us on hard objects we thought were torches in their pockets, only to grow up and realise they were erections. How can we forget uncles who accuse our mothers of keeping us away from relatives, only for our mums to force us to visit and said uncles touch us inappropriately and tell us they want to make us feel ‘special’. Are you likely to forget the uncles that fingered you when no one was looking, or squeezed your budding painful breasts, or the aunts that touched growing penises, making them hard and excited? Who has forgotten the maid who strips the boys naked, sucking their small penises and then asking them to lie on top of her? Or are we likely to forget the randy pastors who touch us and hug us too tightly and for too long? A lot of childhoods are being stolen right under our noses and we then turn around and accuse the kids of being taciturn, anti social and general trouble makers. What happens to the child who speaks up? They get beatings, blames and get shamed. No one sympathises with the child, because in our warped imagination, the child should know better. As parents, we need to be more observant, alert and ready to tackle these issues because they might be happening right under our noses. We also need to communicate better with our children and be ready to champion them and believe them when they say stuff. No child will go through the stress of making up such uncomfortable stories just to get noticed. Not African children at least. Today, cases are more common where fathers sleep with daughters and mothers will blame and call the daughter a liar and accuse her of trying to steal her husband. I will never forget the furor I caused in my house when I reported that one of my dad’s apprentices was touching me inappropriately at night. This guy was in the choir, speaks in tongues was all round good guy, so they hard a hard time believing he can do stuff like that. My parents were torn, especially when the guy started crying and denied everything. My uncle believed me, and stopped the guy from sleeping at home, only allowing him to bunk in the workshop and come home to bathe and eat. I got my little revenge by spitting in his food. Every time. We all need to be on guard. Watch the kids. Watch those watching the kids. Don’t pass off your responsibilities to others because of convenience. Family members no longer enjoy the squeaky clean reputations they once did. No. Everyone is a suspect and to protect the child, I would rather err on the side of caution. It goes without saying that girls get more sexually abused than the boys, but they are not left out too. We need to suspend or reduce extended holidays, where the children are out of our jurisdiction, be very mindful of the company they keep and also be wary of relatives who are always around and seem to enjoy particular closeness with these kids. We should also listen and pay very close attention to what the children say and try to intuit that which was not said. When a child is very uncomfortable around a particular person, even your spouse, take it very seriously. The worst thing to do is beat a child for actions that were not initiated by him or her. Face the adult squarely. Pedophilia is real. Pay attention. We take a lot for granted and mortgage the future of our children. Sex education plays a vital role in forestalling sexual abuse. They are never too young to arm themselves against predators and monsters.  Miss eloquent

It is our culture… These and more are the reasons we give for a lot of things we do everyday, things that defy reason, common sense and logic. We all do it, from Primary School Leavers to PhD holders, our culture has a firm grip on us. It is high time we questioned a lot of the things we do in the name of ‘Culture’, it is high time we made judicious use of our brains to think and criticize a lot of the things we grew up doing, things that have become our norm, especially when they threaten to destroy or demean us. It is not wrong to question things…no, its not disrespectful…, no its not sacrilegious…no, its not challenging the ‘gods of the land’…no, you will not have an ant infestation…no, I don’t really think Amadioha cares if you whistle at night and neither will Sango strike you with thunder if you decide to question why your people do certain things. In fact, you owe it to your future generation to question norms and practices. Questioning things is proof that we are thinking beings and as such, we must know why we do certain things, knowing that its too lazy to say ‘Its our culture…we have always done it that way’…way too lazy. Some of the things we do that make no sense even in an alternate universe includes… 1. Cutting baby’s hair just because she is one year old. Why, Oh Why do we do this? A friend of mine came by the other day, her baby had beautiful, luscious locks and I was so awed and admired it, but was taken aback when she said she was cutting it next week. I asked why and she said ‘she will be one next week, so she needs her first hair cut’. I was so mad and asked if there was any spiritual or cultural undertone to first hair cuts and surprisingly, she had never thought to ask. Brothers and sisters, there is none. Not a one. The hair is cut when growth is unequal or scanty, and no matter what happens, that first hair will shed as the child grows. Please stop with the cutting and making babies looklike little criminals. 2. Why do we wear safety pins on our clothes when going to the market, village or public gatherings? Does it mean that metal repels evil? Sir, if the Blood of Jesus or the deity you worship cannot save you, change religion. Leave those pins alone. 3. We buy crude oil and keep in our houses to ward off evil spirits and spells…yes, you heard it, crude oil (I once saw this in a professor’s house). This culture thing has a very strong hold that even education is yet to break… 4. Why do you go for deliverance when you eat in your dream? We always believe that anything done in the dream is either a warning or manifestation of something about to happen or already happening. One quick question though…did you eat before going to bed? Just asking. 5. Why do we place pieces of cloth on our heads to stop hiccups? Guys, I have seen a doctor do this. Strange enough, we so believe in this that we take it for granted that it will stop…and it does! But it not scientific… I have the cure for hiccups…water!!! 6. Why do we stop children from eating meat and eggs? Because they will steal (duh really?). I still wonder who drew the correlation between eggs and stealing…they disenfranchised generations of Nigerian children and as educated as we are, some of us still perpetuate that myth. 7. Childbirth and baby care has a thousand and one practices all mired in folklore, myths, legends and old wives tales. Giving a baby bitter kola for colic, scent leaf juice for colic, rubbing toothpaste on the umbilical chord, mixing chalk and sundry items for soft skull or baby’s soft fontanelle, squeezing and ‘moulding’ baby’s head, nose, vagina and waist (Hian…what a wawu). Pregnant and nurse mothers are not left out in the culture fest! Ladies, have you forgotten the scalding hot water you sat on after your delivery… Yes, after the episiotomy and other cuts? (Yikes!) Who has forgotten the very hot towels used for your vaginas and stomachs? What of the concoctions we all had to drink just to expel all the ‘bad blood’ and after birth? Can I have a witness to the series of repeated visits to the hospital after those stitches tore because of the heat from the hot water and salt? This list is not by any means exhaustive. There are countless things we still do in the name of culture, that goes a long way in limiting us, diminishing us and taking us backwards. Culture is made for man, not man for culture, so it is dynamic, which is why we celebrate twins today and not kill them. What are the things done in your locality in the name of culture and how have you flipped the script? We would like to know! PS. I have participated in some of these. But unlike some of you, I have received sense!!! Andee

body![images-39.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRLnnAx6btaVHsevQreYSzy1Jp3wpWzLJkixKS2Pqapno/images-39.jpg One of the biggest issues facing humanity in this modern day, is the issue of child sexual abuse.

This problem has proven to be global in nature, causing untold pain, trauma and psychological torture to both victims, parents and society. For me, this has always being personal, seeing this evil tear families and communities apart and feeling the lifelong effects change the trajectory of a person’s life. Child sexual abuse in Nigeria is one of those worst kept secrets, made worse by our African culture of silence and the fact that the African parenting styles have a lot to do with intimidation, manipulation and punishment.\n\nIn the last two weeks, Nigeria, especially Port-Harcourt has been rocked by the story of Ifeanyi Dike, who raped, murdered and mutilated his 8 year old niece, and tried to dispose her remains in a sack bag in the middle of the night. This macabre story made waves because it ended in a gruesome death for a young, beautiful and innocent girl, but the biggest lesson learnt from that incident is that fact that this act was perpetrated by a trusted family member, who has carried this child as a baby, thereby earning her parent’s trust as a relative and a natural champion for this child.\n\nThe statistics on child sexual abuse is alarming, and makes for sleepless nights and worrisome days. Ninety percent of the molestation cases involve the child’s relatives. Ninety percent. We used to think that this was a western phenomenon, simply because they were more open about it, victims came forward, some sued, the news and every media carried it. For us in Africa, we shroud unpleasantness in mystery and secrecy, using intimidation, shaming and stigma as weapons that enshrine our denial of reality.\n\n\n\nOur peculiar African notion of family and brotherhood, makes it worse for us, when we entrust the care of our young ones into the hands of cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, friends, acquaintances and in-laws, trusting them wholly to ensure their safety and well-being. This laissez faire attitude, puts the child at enormous risk, leaving them at the mercy of care givers who have little or no oversight. The matter is further complicated when a child reports inappropriate behavior and gets punished for being in that situation in the first place.\n\nWhile growing up, I still remember severe beatings and punishment which was meted out to me because I found myself in compromising situations with ‘uncles’ who had known history as child molesters. I got the brunt of the punishment because my mother believed I should have been sensible enough not to allow myself be lured into their houses. This gap in parent-child communication has accounted for the gap in intervention in child molestation cases. It is obvious that in Africa, we find it very difficult to differentiate childhood from adulthood.\n\nIf African children begin to talk about childhood experiences, it is obvious that our region will be declared a human and child rights disaster and  emergency area. We need to be more proactive in forestalling sexual abuse before it happens and arm ourselves adequately to deal with the fall out after it happens. Girls are not the only ones at risk, cases abound where boys are molested by uncles, care givers, and even the clergy. The dangers abound and we cannot just relax and trust everyone around us to be normal and sane\n\nWe all have stories of uncles rubbing us on hard objects we thought were torches in their pockets, only to grow up and realise they were erections. How can we forget uncles who accuse our mothers of keeping us away from relatives, only for our mums to force us to visit and said uncles touch us inappropriately and tell us they want to make us feel ‘special’. Are you likely to forget the uncles that fingered you when no one was looking, or squeezed your budding painful breasts, or the aunts that touched growing penises, making them hard and excited?\n\nWho has forgotten the maid who strips the boys naked, sucking their small penises and then asking them to lie on top of her? Or are we likely to forget the randy pastors who touch us and hug us too tightly and for too long? A lot of childhoods are being stolen right under our noses and we then turn around and accuse the kids of being taciturn, anti social and general trouble makers. What happens to the child who speaks up? They get beatings, blames and get shamed. No one sympathises with the child, because in our warped imagination, the child should know better.\n\nAs parents, we need to be more observant, alert and ready to tackle these issues because they might be happening right under our noses. We also need to communicate better with our children and be ready to champion them and believe them when they say stuff. No child will go through the stress of making up such uncomfortable stories just to get noticed. Not African children at least. Today, cases are more common where fathers sleep with daughters and mothers will blame and call the daughter a liar and accuse her of trying to steal her husband.\n\nI will never forget the furor I caused in my house when I reported that one of my dad’s apprentices was touching me inappropriately at night. Every time.\n\nWe all need to be on guard. We need to suspend or reduce extended holidays, where the children are out of our jurisdiction, be very mindful of the company they keep and also be wary of relatives who are always around and seem to enjoy particular closeness with these kids.\n\nWe should also listen and pay very close attention to what the children say and try to intuit that which was not said. body*Dear chorister,* if you don't study the Bible, you're in the music industry, not music ministry. You'll sing nonsense and call it "gospel" like we do today. You'll be entertaining instead of ministering... You better choose one of the two. *Dear Prayer warrior,* if you don't have a communion with God in the closet, and pray your life unto holiness, if you don't study your Bible, though you jump and shout in numerous prayer gatherings, you may just be another prophet of baal, though you cast out devils, you may just be a worker of iniquity. *Dear usher,* if you don't guard you heart, and control your thoughts, if you don't study the Bible, you're a traffic warden or better still, a party protocol. You simply maintain foot traffic in the assembly. *Dear Bible study leader,* if your life is not a living epistle, if you don't study the Bible, you're an ordinary public speaker, not a minister. You'll preach rubbish. *Dear children department coordinator,* if you're still a babe in the scriptures, if you don't study the Bible, you're just a social juvenile worker or betterstill a nanny. *Dear drama group member,* if you don't act out,a holy life, if you don't study the Bible, you're just doing Nollywood, no life! *Dear instrumentalist and technical unit member*, if you don't study the Bible, you're just a D Jay, a very noisy one for that matter. *Dear Prophet,* if you don't study the Bible, you're just a soothsayer. You'll be predicting Arsenal vs Leicester city, not anything relevant to God's kingdom on earth. *Dear Christian writer,* if you don't study the Bible, you're just D. O. Fagunwa, Chinua Achebe, or the writer of "Eze goes to school." You'll write for fiction, not for the Kingdom. *Dear Christian motivational speaker,* if you don't study the Bible, you're just a psychologist. *Dear church members,* if you don't study the Bible, you'll be mislead by false doctrine and heretic teachings. *And above all, Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.* *No matter how anointed you are, if you don't study the Bible, you're just a spiritualist, not a spiritual person.* Those who preach and teach alone aren't the only ones called by God to be rich in the Word of faith and sound doctrine. Every child of God is. This is the reason why many are "merely engaged" by churches, but aren't ''imparted''. This is why much of what some call "service" in God's household may result in futility. Check well before you call it ministration.
