| body | ## Bye BitConnect If you haven't heard or seen by now, here's the article from BitConnect themselves. https://bitconnect.co/system-news/94/changes-coming-for-the-bitconnect-system-halt-of-lending-and-exchange-platform Here's another article from TheNextWeb: https://thenextweb.com/hardfork/2018/01/16/bitconnect-shut-down-closed/ Hard to believe so many people bought into this. I'm surprised they actually kept the website up and informed people about the changes. I was expecting this, but I thought it would be somewhat similar to BitPetite. Month after month, experts predicted Bitcoin's value, but it far surpassed what everyone was saying. January 1, 2017 we saw Bitcoin reach the $1,000 mark something it hadn't seen since late 2013 right before it came crashing down. Many economists are calling it a bubble while enthusiasts such as [Andreas Antounoupolos](https://antonopoulos.com/) are continuing to contend that it has much more to gain in the coming years. What we do know, is that there are some major issues with Bitcoin (BTC) as it currently stands: 1. **Speed** - If you skimp on the transaction fee, it could take a really long time to confirm your transaction. 2. **Fees** - When you're paying an exorbitant amount of money just to use the currency, it makes it much less useful in everyday transactions. Unless you're buying a car every day, it's hard to justify paying such high fees. 3. **Consensus** - If [Satoshi Nakamoto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoshi_Nakamoto) would just identify himself, we could all just ask him where he believes Bitcoin should go next. Then, at least we'll have a good group of people that can follow his implementation. Instead, we've now got [Bitcoin](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin/) and [Bitcoin Cash](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin-cash/) *see [Roger Ver](https://twitter.com/rogerkver)* and a bunch of people who are trying to interpret where it should go. 4. **Centralization** - Many people argue that one of Bitcoin's goals was to get away from a centralized bank controlling all the finances. With Bitcoin's increasing mining difficulty, there are a small amount of mining pools that control the majority of the hashrate on the network *see https://blockchain.info/pools*. With that said, there is a lot of excitement on the future of Bitcoin, especially with the development of the lightning network [see whitepaper](https://lightning.network/lightning-network-paper.pdf). While I believe, Bitcoin has a use as a store-of-value, like gold, I don't believe 2018 will see as large of a rise as 2016 and 2017. However, with the above mentioned issues, I believe 2018 will be the year of the altcoin. ## Altcoins of 2018 There's a lot of talk about altcoins because people want to find the *next Bitcoin* before market cap is too high. However, with the infancy of these coins, a lot of this is pure speculation and guesswork. Remember, it took a while for people to see the value of Bitcoin. The following coins have seen some massive growth in the last few months, but here's how I believe 2018 will look for them. For that reason, here are the coins I'm watching closely: 1. https://files.coinmarketcap.com/static/img/coins/32x32/cardano.png **[Cardano](https://www.cardanohub.org/en/home/)** - This coin has had an amazing run in the past month or so. They've got [a great roadmap](https://cardanoroadmap.com), but that's just it, it's a roadmap. This roadmap has gotten them to #5 on [CoinMarketCap](https://coinmarketcap.com). Without the implementation, it's very hard for me to trust that valuation. Once we see the release of Shelley and it delivers on all its promises, then we can start trusting this, but until then, it's mostly speculation. *Verdict - wait and see* 2. https://files.coinmarketcap.com/static/img/coins/32x32/tron.png **[TRON](https://tron.network/)** - According to their [Twitter account](https://twitter.com/Tronfoundation), they will be announcing a huge partnership on January 10th. People are buying TRON ahead of the announcement hoping for the best. However, I'm not convinced of the use of TRON as it stands. Do I really need a decentralized peer-to-peer protocol for my content or would I rather have it on Google's HUGE infrastructure without having to pay a penny? If anything, I would buy and probably sell soon after the announcement for a quick gain, but I just don't see the long term value in having this protocol or a currency associated with the protocol. *Verdict - not buying* 3. https://files.coinmarketcap.com/static/img/coins/32x32/hempcoin.png **[HempCoin](http://hempcoin.org/)** - In the US, marijuana is outlawed. So it has been very well-documented of their struggles with cash and banks in the US. Although, I'm not a fan of recreational use of marijuana, I definitely see how appealing this coin is for farmers and distributors in the states where it is legal to buy and sell. Their website suggests that the coin is for the whole agricultural/farming (*gimme a break*) community, but what irks me is that they don't have a valid HTTPS certificate. I mean, it's 2018 and you have companies like LetsEncrypt where you can get a free valid certificate. It's had an amazing run, which I believe is founded, but I see the government legalizing marijuana soon anyway. Once it is legalized, do people really want another currency just for the agricultural community? *Verdict - not buying* 4. https://files.coinmarketcap.com/static/img/coins/32x32/decred.png **[Decred](https://www.decred.org/)** - This is one I believe has long term potential to be a really great currency. The speed and privacy with which it operates far surpasses Bitcoin and they are working to create more mining pools so centralization doesn't become a huge problem. Users who hold stake in Decred are able to vote similar to stakeholders in a publicly traded company. I believe Decred is building a great product instead of spending a lot of time on marketing and learning from the faults of other cryptocurrencies. For this reason, I believe this to be a longterm buy and hold. It has seen steady growth since its inception which is a good sign for me. *Verdict - buying* 5. https://files.coinmarketcap.com/static/img/coins/32x32/ripple.png **[Ripple](https://ripple.com/)** - Over the past 2 months, XRP has seen a tremendous growth becoming the second overall leader in terms of total market cap in cryptocurrency. The question now is have we hit the peak? Where does it go from here? I believe banks will start to invest in some form of cryptocurrency and Ripple is at the top of that list. Having investors such as Andreessen-Horowitz backing the project is a solid plus for this technology. My bold prediction for 2018 is that we will see Ripple pass Bitcoin in total market cap. *Verdict - buying* 6. https://files.coinmarketcap.com/static/img/coins/32x32/quantstamp.png **[Quantstamp](https://quantstamp.com/)** - Nobody wants to be audited, but we all know that's what keeps people honest. With cryptocurrencies, I don't think we need to go over why its needed, but rather how we do it. Why does HTTPS work so well? Because we have companies like Verisign or Symantec that we trust to verify the identity of servers. At some point, we need to trust somebody, and that's who Quantstamp wants to be. It's still in very early stages of development, but I believe that this could be the moonshot of 2018, if they hit all their milestones. It is an ERC20 token, so we know the pros and cons of that, but this has some great potential. *Verdict - closing my eyes and buying* https://media.giphy.com/media/26n79mtOf8MRKRWz6/giphy.gif Thanks for reading! | title | What I learned buying Bitcoin from Bitquick.co |
| body | NOTE: I have no affiliation with bitquick.co, these are strictly my thoughts as a first time user. # Why buy from Bitquick.co? I've previously bought bitcoin from [Coinbase](http://coinbase.com), but I moved to a state where coinbase is banned. So I had 3 other choices AFAIK. * [Uphold](https://uphold.com/) * [LocalBitcoins](https://localbitcoins.com/) * [Bitquick](https://bitquick.co/) ## Uphold The process at Uphold is very similar to Coinbase where you link a bank account and transfer funds from there to your Uphold account. After 5-7 *business* days, your funds are available to use to purchase a few cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin. However, the deposit process takes so long that I was getting bored waiting for it to deposit even though it already debited from my bank account. ## LocalBitcoins LocalBitcoins is a service where people post how many bitcoins they have for sale and the various ways you can pay them for it. I didn't like the lack of security with LocalBitcoins or the non-competitive rates. All rates seemed to be higher than most exchanges. After looking into these two, I decided to look at Bitquick.co. Here are some of my thoughts on buying from this platform. ## Bitquick ### How it works Bitquick basically acts like an escrow service holding the bitcoin from the seller. The seller names a price and buyers are able to purchase at that price (plus some minor fees). A buyer puts a hold on some amount of bitcoin from a seller and then has 3 hours to do a *cash deposit* to the sellers bank. Here's the instructions from the website. #### Buying 1. Select an order from the current order book, enter your email address and submit. 2. Pay the described sum in cash (physical bills) to the account shown on the confirmation page by going to any local branch of the sellers bank and filling out a deposit slip. 3. Upload the receipt to link that is provided in your email. #### Selling 1. Fill out the sell form. 2. Deposit the necessary amount of Bitcoin (BTC) for sale into your personalized escrow address that is provided after you create your order. 3. Receive cash deposits from buyers on BitQuick.co instantly, and confirm these deposits with BitQuick. An email will be sent automatically to remind you when a deposit is made. That's it! It's a pretty simple process, but getting cash, then going to the bank while the teller looks at you thinking why is this guy depositing all this money into someone else's bank account can be a bit of a hassle. The scary part is waiting for the bitcoin to arrive at the address. It says 3 hours on their website, but it took 6 for me and I was a nervous wreck the whole time. ### Pros * *Competitive rates* - typically you can get bitcoin below market rate * *Relatively quick* - took about 6 hours for me * *Non-invasive* - some exchanges require knowing a ton of personal information, but Bitquick just wants an email and a bitcoin address to deposit your funds. * *Email Updates* - Every step of the way, you are emailed with the status of your order, so you know when you should've received bitcoin. ### Cons * *User Interface* - typically you can get bitcoin below market rate * *Cash Deposits Only* - I'm always leery of cash deposits because there's no way of reversing that, but that's the point of using cash deposits. Otherwise sellers could get screwed. * *Unprofessional Website* - it's hard to trust a company when they don't use a .com address or the website looks like a simple WordPress site. * *Customer Support* - customer support is available through Athena Bitcoin via email and is not 24 hours. Overall, I think Bitquick is a decent service. With a few tweaks here or there it could be much better, but it definitely served its purpose. I just wanted to create this post for anyone who is skeptical and let you know it did work for me. Happy trading! |
