| body | One way to make money with UniLift is by creating and/or sharing content. Using Steemit we can show Steemit is a platform allowing content creators to get paid when their work is up-voted, as do the users by up-voting other's works. Users get paid in the form of digital currency which they can then convert to real money. Depending on the quality of a post, the more up-votes users add to a piece, the more currency the author earns. This encourages frequent and most importantly, quality content across the platform. It’s cryptocurrency married with social media. A cryptocurrency is a digital currency independent of a central bank or government. Essentially it is a digital asset, but a bit like company stocks and shares. Users of Steemit, which launched in March of 2016, are also paid by up-voting works and earning up-votes from their comments. This results in an all-round engaged and interactive community. Breaking down the currencies on Steemit There are three currency units that come with Steemit: Steem, Steem Dollars and Steem Power. Steem are tradable tokens which can instantly be exchanged in the open market for bitcoins, other cryptocurrencies or money. Their value is unstable because, daily, more of their units are added into the market and thus holding onto them for too long dilutes their value. Steem Dollars never lose their value. When earning through Steemit, users get paid 50% in Steem Dollars and 50% in Steem Power. Holding the dollars earns a user 10% annual interest and they can be traded anytime. Holding Steem Power means holding ownership in the network. As Steemit grows so do users’ shares in the company. The more Steem Power, the greater curation power of a user, meaning their up-votes will pay content creators significantly more compared to a new user with no Steem Power. This wallet is locked for two years before a user can withdraw their Steem Power which guarantees protection against a price crash in the company. Why you should get started I have begun writing travel pieces on Steemit and already built a following of 100 users. One powerful user up-voted an early post of mine about a trip to Malaysia and I earned £35 from just one article! THIRTY FIVE QUID! Nice. One full-time Steemit user, @sweetsssj, who has with more than 10,000 followers makes on average £380, and up to £770 per post, by writing about her travels. If a student like me or you can work up to make £300 per post and we post one article per day, that would earn us an income of £9,000 per month. That would pay off student loans and living costs, as well as raise our living standards! There is no cost in setting up an account on the platform. As long as a user interacts with the community by up-voting posts, commenting, and writing articles, they can make friends, money and read fascinating articles. As the community is young and growing quickly, now is the time to get first mover advantage. If you have the motivation, this could become your full time career! |

When earning through Steemit, users get paid 50% in Steem Dollars and 50% in Steem Power. Holding the dollars earns a user 10% annual interest and they can be traded anytime.\n\nHolding Steem Power means holding ownership in the network. As Steemit grows so do users’ shares in the company. The more Steem Power, the greater curation power of a user, meaning their up-votes will pay content creators significantly more compared to a new user with no Steem Power.\n\nThis wallet is locked for two years before a user can withdraw their Steem Power which guarantees protection against a price crash in the company.\n\nWhy you should get started\n\nI have begun writing travel pieces on Steemit and already built a following of 100 users. One powerful user up-voted an early post of mine about a trip to Malaysia and I earned £35 from just one article! \n\nTHIRTY FIVE QUID! Nice.\n\nOne full-time Steemit user, @sweetsssj, who has with more than 10,000 followers makes on average £380, and up to £770 per post, by writing about her travels. If a student like me or you can work up to make £300 per post and we post one article per day, that would earn us an income of £9,000 per month. That would pay off student loans and living costs, as well as raise our living standards!\n\nThere is no cost in setting up an account on the platform. As long as a user interacts with the community by up-voting posts, commenting, and writing articles, they can make friends, money and read fascinating articles.\n\nAs the community is young and growing quickly, now is the time to get first mover advantage.\n\nIf you have the motivation, this could become your full time career!",

| body | A young Nottinghamshire tech entrepreneur is set to launch his new ridesharing app this month. Roshan Sood, 24, of West Bridgford , has made UniLift, an app which he believes to be the first of its kind in the country. It allows students to share lifts together by either offering or booking a lift in a car heading where they want to go. The former Nottingham High School pupil and economics graduate has been single-handedly leading the project since he first came up with the idea two years ago. He said: “To start a business or a website today is a lot easier so I thought I would give it a go. “It has been a lot of work but when it is your own project you do not see it as hard work. I have enjoyed it. “Doing this has pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am sure the nerves will kick in as I get closer to the launch but at the moment I am just excited.” Mr Sood came up with the idea while he was on his year abroad in Valencia and noticed students in Europe were saving money with similar companies like BlaBlaCar. He realised there was a gap in the market for an app just for students here in the UK and he found many were using Facebook groups to find cheap lifts. He set about developing the idea in his final year of university and has concentrated on it fully since he graduated in June with support from his family and a team of developers in India. The idea is that users chose where they want to go and then see who else is heading there and has a free space. They then agree a price and travel together, with driving license verification and real-time tracking to provide security. The aim is to provide a sociable and cheaper alternative to trains and taxis – with Mr Sood estimating that a trip to Manchester should cost roughly £12. Although it is starting in his home city, which he believes is “up and coming”, Mr Sood hopes to expand it to cities across the country. To save money while he sets up his business he is currently living with his parents in West Bridgford. His mum Asha Sood, 52, a healthcare professional, said: “I am very proud of him. When they are inspired by something and follow their dreams it is great. | body | The Internet may have made a writer’s job easier, but it has also made it a lot more difficult to earn a decent living: magazine and newspaper subscriptions are down, online ad revenue lags behind print, yet the cost of living only ever seems to go up. These days a city like London is prohibitively expensive even for well-established professionals, let alone someone at the beginning of their career. This harsh economic reality forces many people, not just young writers, to make tough decisions: do they stay in a city they can’t afford to enjoy, or move somewhere less oppressive? This is an age-old dilemma that has forced generations of city slickers out into dreary suburbs and provincial towns, but in the age of easyJet and globalisation, cheaper doesn’t necessarily have to mean cultural exile. You can move to Berlin like I did, which has allowed me to balance my creative ambitions with the joys of cosmopolitan living. Berlin’s appeal is obvious: it’s a major European metropolis with a thriving cultural scene and arguably the best nightlife in the world. Yet, at the same time, rent is approximately 57% lower than in London, which has a knock-on effect on the price of everything else. According to Numbeo, costs of living in London are roughly 46% higher than in the German capital. Mind you, pay tends to be lower, but the money you do make goes further and buys you breathing space to develop your career while still having some sort of fun. While my move to Berlin might look like it was driven by lifestyle, my main priority was actually my career. In any profession pay is largely shaped by talent and experience and most people will see their salaries grow as they accumulate more of the latter. Writers are often forced to supplement their income with odd jobs or perhaps even find unsatisfying career employment then try to forge a career in their free time, sacrificing weekends, leisure and friendships in the pursuit of professional actualisation. There are those that romanticise this, but they’ve usually read too much Bukowski and never really tried to achieve anything creatively. Musician and novelist, Stuart David, once wrote that “there is a myth that says you can work at menial labour and still learn to be an artist in your free time. This is propagated by people who haven’t tried to create anything in the state of mind that way of life engenders.” I wholeheartedly agree with him. We might mystify the creative process, but it really is like any other job: the more you do it, the better you get at it. Elite footballers are born with innate talent, but relentless practice is what gets them to the top. The more you read, for example, the better you will write. Great ideas take time to ferment and need mental space to grow from an inspirational spark into a fully-formed work – an intense, introspective process that often looks like a lot like idling on the outside but is really anything but. In Berlin there’s less pressure to take a shoddy second job to support yourself, freeing up more time to work on your craft, which is the only way to get better at it. |

| body | We caught up with Neil Rigg, Director at the Music Study in Leeds and Co-Director of Renaissance Arts (see RA’s promo video above to get an idea of what their students do). Both offer hands on post-graduate training, advice and courses around the arts for those that want to progress their talents from theory into practice. Neil shared his top 10 tips for those studying music but alot of them apply to study in general… 1: Play hard, Work harder. You’ve got to work hard to rise above the rest in every industry. Work hard for 45 hours and then play hard for 20. No more, no less. 2. Make a list of your 10 most inspirational people in your chosen career. Be as committed as them and after you have followed their footsteps take some further ones and outshine them. 3. Be fearless . Don’t be scared of getting it wrong. Love him or hate him , Trump lost 10 million before becoming the most powerful man in the world. And Thomas Edison went through hundreds of failures of the… oh forget Edison, he’s long dead. 4. Plan your life , get a five year diary, use iCal , make arrangements lists and organise everything to the last detail. 5. Don’t just learn the theory, bust out riffs on every instrument you come across. Being a well-rounded musician is as much about being able to tap out a paradiddle on the corner of a pub table listening to Drake as it is being able to read Vivaldi’s Symphony in G minor on sight. 6. Always show your best smile, be polite and take an interest in those you work with. You don’t have to be their best friend but regardless of what you think of them if you are working with them respect the work place 7. Learn how to be careful with money invest in your future. Keep your receipts (including even dog food for your ‘record label guard dog’) and keep straight with the tax man. 8. Keep learning , no matter how far you advance your never too old to learn something new. I guess that’s a no brainer though, you being a student and all. 9. Take note, even if you don’t think it’s right in your own mind. See the bigger picture it’s not all about you. And take actual notes. Richard Branson spends 64% of his fortune on Moleskin notebooks and Mont Blanc pens commiting 97% of everything he encounters to paper. While that might be a complete lie, the fact that the majority of successful ideas start out life in the ink chamber of a biro pen before being scrawled onto the back of a napkin is not. Honest. 10. Yep. Practice. Visit themusicstudy.co.uk for more information on post-graduate options for music students. |

| body | We all know that going to the gym and exercising are good for you and make your life better, I just didn’t know what I was meant to do when I got there. Perhaps your thinking of going but you’re afraid, you just end up going and only using the running machine for as long as it takes for you to feel the burning in your throat, then you submit and head straight to the sauna steam feeling dejected. Then there’s also that little voice in your head that puts the fear in you… that little devil on your should saying things like: • “you need get fit outside of the gym before you step foot in a gym or you’re going to end up looking stupid” • “don’t even think about going near the free weights section, you just stick to the running machine and maybe a few machines” • “just stick to what you know, don’t try anything new then you won’t fail” So that’s what I’m going to cover in this post, how to survive the gym for beginners. This will apply to you if you’ve been a member for a while or even if you just joined this morning, this will have you venturing out of the running machine section into unchartered territory, like the free weights section. Regardless of what your look like, going to the gym for the first time can be proper intimidating, so getting your head in the zone is key, don’t worry about what other people will think of you, they’re not there to worry about what you look like or what you’re doing, they’re just there to work out! Here’s so key things to remember: 1. Everyone starts somewhere 2. Most people are too busy focusing on what they’re doing to worry about you 3. Everyone around you is just as self-conscious as you are 4. Most people will rate you for trying 5. A very rare few will judge you, but forget about them there are idiots everywhere in life And now get these things done: 1. Make a sick playlist of tracks that will get you pumped 2. Keep your headphones on, get in the zone, forget about everyone around you 3. Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in Now make a start with some stretches: • Slowly roll your shoulders forwards and backwards • Roll you head in half circles from shoulder to shoulder • Keep your legs in place and twist your body left and right • Stretch your quads by lifting your heel up to your bum and holding it in place with one arm while using your other arm to balance against a wall • Then cross one arm across your chest and use the other to press it against you by pulling on your elbow Hold each of the last stretches two for 5-10 seconds, now make your way to a running machine, most of them have a quick start button, if you’re really lost feel free to ask someone at reception to help you, they’re there to help so don’t be shy! Start of by doing a brisk walk for 10-15 minutes to get the blood pumping and warm you up, use this time to have a look around at what other people are up to At this point if you left, you have still won by even turning up and getting this far, but don’t give up yet because we’re just getting started Next up we are going to do some push ups and some squats, 3 sets of each so find somewhere out the way in the gym where you can do: • 10 squats • 10 push-ups • 10 squats • 10 push-ups • 10 squats • 10 push-ups If you don’t know how to do either of these below are some quick videos to show you, maybe try them at home before you go so you know what you’re doing before you get to the gym How to do a push up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh00_rniF8E How to do a squat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aclHkVaku9U Now it’s time to get busy with some dumbbell action, nothing too heavy just ease yourself in start at around 10-12kg and find yourself a flat bench, you want to do 10 reps on each arm below is a video on how to do dumbbell rows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYcpY20QaE8 Right so let’s recap on our circuit: • 10 squats • 10 push-ups • 10 one arm dumbbell rows (10 per arm) You want to be aiming to doing this 2-3 times but just do what you’re comfortable with, you have a nice little routine to get started now, and below is a few final pointers: 1. Take your time – it’s not a race and it’s fine to have rest between exercises and circuits 2. Keep a note of what you’re doing – its good to look back at what you have achieved 3. It’s better to lift a weight that’s TOO LIGHT instead of one that’s TOO HEAVY! Don’t strain yourself 4. If you don’t know something, ask someone that works in the gym for help – they are there to help! |

| body | UniLife caught up with the Notorious RIG, who was until recently the A&R manager at one of the bigger labels. You’ve definitely heard of them, and if you’re a blazer-and-jeans wearing cheese monger, you’ve probably ‘put your hands in the air’ at BCN in Mega-luf to one of the tunes he’s signed. We wanted to ask him some questions about the use of computers in modern day music, but he didn’t want to burn any bridges, so we’ve given him a clue-laden pseudonym. Noisey: To what extent are hit-predicting algorithms used in the music industry? The Notorious RIG: Algorithms are good for armchair A&R but there’s no substitute for human perspective. Or taste. In the commercial chart domain however, where neither of these things exist, it seems robots are fair game when it comes to predicting the penchant of the people. My own experience of using such methods is more as an evaluation tool for records that have already been made; a shit-test, so to speak. I’ve never personally seen any such witchcraft in action in the recording process; however, the mind of a producer is perfectly capable of running its own algorithms to fathom the workings of its audience’s aural tastebuds. Even more so if they also play out as a DJ, such as David Guetta, and get to gauge first-hand the impact of their music on their customers, I mean, fans. How much of chart success is down to the actual music compared to things like marketing? The music is very important, as it often is the marketing. People hear previews on radio, clubs, YouTube and soundtracking commercials advertising their favourite jeans, and the music is designed to stay in their heads. Marketing is merely the Trojan horse, in my opinion it’s about 25% marketing and 75% music. But in pop music, the actual music itself also contains about 75% marketing content. Does that make sense? Totes. According to Score A Hit, chart music has become a lot more predictable in the past 10 years than it was in the 70s and 80s. Why? Pop music is becoming more predictable because it has carved itself out as an actual genre rather than a statistic group. Popular music, to use its unabbreviated form, has certain structures, hooks, melodic progressions and vocal content that are easy to digest by the masses. This is something that the major labels have perfected into a science over the last thirty years. The sneaky bastards know that “brick wall mastering” a track will make it sound louder on radio, repeating certain phrases in a certain syncopated phrasing will trigger the brain’s reward centres. they also know that the “danceability” of a record is now an important factor due to heavy club promotion, so they have ways of making sure their tracks make you want to cut up a rug or bust a robot. A more realistic take on the dichotomy between the 70s/80s and 90s/00s is that TV and Radio programs directly influence the charts by their choice of which artists to feature on their shows. This choice back in the 70s and 80s was often influenced by practices such as “payola”, basically large of amounts of top shelf rack (see cocaine) in exchange for airtime. This apparently doesn’t happen anymore as DJs can now afford to support their habit. Ha! So do you see this continuing or has something eventually got to give? The internet has done some damage to the major label framework. They are no longer the gatekeepers. The people are empowered by their own free will and are rejecting their media-fed pseudo-reality and replacing it with their own iPod playlists. This will result in many charts instead of a few central charts and they will spawn and multiply and become diverse and interesting. A new dawn will arise and sub-genre after sub-genre shall resound from the earphones of the people. Music needs a messiah. A Julian Assange, Charlie Sheen or John Connor, sent back from the future to set the record(s) straight. The world of entertainment awaits the Anti-Bieber. Inspirational. So, to what extent can the music industry tell people what to like? To the same extent that other industries can tell you what to eat, wear, drink and so on. At the end of the day, the music industry is a vehicle for a product. That product, like any other will be manufactured, packaged, marketed and sold. However, even if Simon Cowell were to subliminally force his way into your home and market a psychologically tuned algorithmic hotdog straight into your mouth, it’s always your choice whether to swallow it. I’m certain I wouldn’t. It’s nothing against Simon Cowell, mental intrusion or even algorithms. I just don’t like hotdogs. Right, keep your hot dog out of my ear, pal. |

The sneaky bastards know that “brick wall mastering” a track will make it sound louder on radio, repeating certain phrases in a certain syncopated phrasing will trigger the brain’s reward centres. they also know that the “danceability” of a record is now an important factor due to heavy club promotion, so they have ways of making sure their tracks make you want to cut up a rug or bust a robot.\n\nA more realistic take on the dichotomy between the 70s/80s and 90s/00s is that TV and Radio programs directly influence the charts by their choice of which artists to feature on their shows. This choice back in the 70s and 80s was often influenced by practices such as “payola”, basically large of amounts of top shelf rack (see cocaine) in exchange for airtime. This apparently doesn’t happen anymore as DJs can now afford to support their habit.\nHa! So do you see this continuing or has something eventually got to give?\nThe internet has done some damage to the major label framework. They are no longer the gatekeepers. The people are empowered by their own free will and are rejecting their media-fed pseudo-reality and replacing it with their own iPod playlists. This will result in many charts instead of a few central charts and they will spawn and multiply and become diverse and interesting.\n\nA new dawn will arise and sub-genre after sub-genre shall resound from the earphones of the people. Music needs a messiah. A Julian Assange, Charlie Sheen or John Connor, sent back from the future to set the record(s) straight. The world of entertainment awaits the Anti-Bieber.\n\nInspirational. So, to what extent can the music industry tell people what to like?\nTo the same extent that other industries can tell you what to eat, wear, drink and so on. At the end of the day, the music industry is a vehicle for a product. That product, like any other will be manufactured, packaged, marketed and sold.\n\nHowever, even if Simon Cowell were to subliminally force his way into your home and market a psychologically tuned algorithmic hotdog straight into your mouth, it’s always your choice whether to swallow it. I’m certain I wouldn’t. It’s nothing against Simon Cowell, mental intrusion or even algorithms. I just don’t like hotdogs.\nRight, keep your hot dog out of my ear, pal.",
