Practicing the piano\nshouldn’t be low on your list of priorities. If it’s\nat the bottom of the list – along with cleaning\nout your dishes you should schedule some time each\nweek to sit down and practice your instrument.\nWhether you practice every Monday, Wednesday,\nand Friday from 6 to 8pm, or every weekday for\nan hour, try not to allow anything to deter or hinder you\nfrom practicing. Commitment to practice is as\nimportant to improving your abilities as finding\nthe right teacher. If you do find yourself with\nextra time, tack on an extra hour to your practice\nroutine.\n2.Learn and Practice Sight Reading:\nWhile sitting down and practicing the same piece\nof music until you play it perfectly is a good way\nto practice, switch it up every once in awhile by\nthrowing a random piece into the mix. When\npracticing your sight reading, don’t worry too\nmuch about making mistakes. Simply play the\npiece from start to finish to your best ability, and\nrun through it a few more times for good\nmeasure. Not only does this type of practice\nimprove your improvisation skills, but sight\nreading is essential for those who are interested\nin joining a band or orchestra. When you do make\nmistakes, don’t look at them as a disappointment\nor burden. If you consider mistakes a crucial part\nof the learning process, you’ll likely find that\npracticing the piano will become more enjoyable.\n3.Slow Down:\nToo many people falsely believe that the true\ntest of a musician is how quickly they can play.\nWhile playing quickly makes sense in some\ncontexts, those who play too quickly may start\nto miss notes and play sloppily. If you find\nyourself missing notes in a particular section,\ndon’t rush through that section as quickly as\npossible- pause the metronome , slow down, and\npractice it until you get it right. No matter how\nwell you think you know a piece, practice it at a\nslower pace every three or four run-throughs.\nAfter all, how can you ever expect to play a\npiece quickly if you can’t play it at a slowed\ndown pace?\n4.Keep Challenging Yourself:\nThis may sound stupid, but you’d be\nsurprised at how many pianists stop challenging\nthemselves once they’ve become semi-proficient\nat playing the instrument. Just as a bodybuilder\nmust lift heavier weights in order to get stronger,\na piano player must continually play more and\nmore difficult pieces in order to improve. If you\naren’t sure which piece of music you should\nchoose to challenge yourself, ask your instructor.\nThey’ll know better than anyone what your\nstrengths and weaknesses are, and they should\nbe able to pick a piece that’s challenging but not\nimpossible.
