| body | Hi Lucinda, OF course Gates needs to "tread lightly through the rice patties." He needs to walk a line that doesn't totally Did the banking community where crypto, as a gamechanger, is going to cut into banks fee revenues like no other market catalyst in over a century. What Gates SHOULD be remarking on, however, is how crypto is vastly changing the cultures of places like Subsaharan Africa and rural IndoAsia where communities are underserved by financial institutions, as well as giving asset security to places like Iran and Venezuela. In these countries, just as one example, the instability of governments has driven consumers to bail on the confidence of their own currency in favor of peer community supported cryptocurrency mechanisms. The transformation we are witnessing is NOT about bitcoin, per se, but about the utility found in a host of cryptocommerce mechanisms that are poplulated and trusted in the countries they are used. -Todd |

| author | tscarolin-md |
| body | Circle Internet Financial Ltd., a closely held mobile-payments firm backed by Goldman Sachs Group Inc., recently announced its intention to acquire Poloniex, which is the 13th/14th largest digital-token exchange (depending upon crypto exchange data). Fortune magazine sized the purchase at approximately $400 MM -- not bad for a crypto exchange founded in January 2014. Circle developed a mobile phone app that allows people to make instant money transfers, very similar to apps such as Venmo. The company also has a trading operation that handles about $2B in monthly cryptocurrency trading volume with customers that include large institutional buyers and sellers. Now Circle is also exploring development and testing of a mobile app that will facilitate investment in crypto assets, essentially "securitizing" crypto -- a game changer. Circle has its eyes on leveraging he Poloniex platform, which is currently available in more than 100 countries, and scaling it further. The company plans to increase its token listings, and explore the fiat connectivity to the dollar, euro and pound. This move by Circle, and Goldman, is transformative in the space as the goal is to create multidimentional distributed marketplace that can host a wide variety of tokens pegged to a host of commodity assets, including physical goods, fundraising and equity, real estate, creative productions such as works of art, music and literature, service leases and time-based rentals, credit, futures, and more." So strap in for the ride as another innovative game changer comes to the cryptcommerce community of the here and NOW and of the future. |

| body | Hey Steemian - nice post. Personally, I think people are getting to wrapped around the "technicals". The future of Bitcoin, and other "viable " cryptos is going to be driven based on application and usage over time. I am in this for the LONG haul. For what and how BC and others will change culture, and for how it will continue to decentralize commerce at large, affording enclaves and peer networks to transact-on-trust. Quite frankly, this is what the banks and the regulatory agencies fear...that a large number of consumers go "off the fiat" and "onto the grid" to transact as they see fit, for their purposes. And that is not about technicals, as it is moreso about utility. Keep up the good posts! Todd |

| body | Hey Lauren - thanks for your update...nice job. you might want to take a look at my article concerning Cryptos and India's Considerations. My gut tells me they will shoot for disallowing "anonymity" in order to avoid fraud and illicit commerce. But, India stands to lose out in a HUGE way if they totally outlaw crypto. Why? because there's a huge opportunity on the "tech" side with blockchain platform innovation that can be used in a variety of industries not only there in India but worldwide and India is a "haven" for offshore employment in this area. If the Govt denies all crypto, organizations will not want to engage in Indian developers for fear of sabotage etc. More to come...but something to consider - Todd |

| body | Apparently, the Defense Logistics Agency's Hotline to report "Fraud Waste and Abuse" is not working! In a recent report by Fox News, the audit and accounting firm Ernst & Young found the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA)failed to properly document more than $800MM in US Taxpayer dollars that was spent on construction projects, merely one of a series of examples where the Agency could produce no paper trail for millions of dollars in property and equipment. Think of the DLA as a quasi Walmart for the Defense Department and our military. IT employs approximately 25,000 employees who handle a wide variety of supply chain functions, providing everything from poultry and beef; medical supplies and pharmaceuticals; fuel supplies; and parts for aircraft, marine vessels, ground vehicles, and weapons systems. That's right - we're talking about "physical stuff" then you can see, feel, and get your hands on. Walmart, which employs some 2.3 million people and can manage 11,700 throughout the world, seems to be capable of managing its enormous supply chain. So what gives at the DLA? Why has the Agency had a track record and of fraud, waste and abuse issues with it supply chain dating back for years? A December 2017 Forbes article pointed out that “on July 26, 2016, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) issued a report "Army General Fund Adjustments Not Adequately Documented or Supported.' That report alone indicated for fiscal year 2015 the Army failed to provide adequate support for $6.5 trillion in accounting journal voucher adjustments.” This would be cause to fire every person in the accounting department were it a firm in the private sector. While its understandable that with such a large Government agency with so many moving parts, locations, and employees -- none of whom are "paid for performance" where financial stewardship is a part of the compensation model -- is bound to have some issues with tracking materiel, the problem appears to be getting worse, not improving. It's time the DLA took a reset and leveraged technologies to help reduce financial waste and loss. Blockchain ledger-based financial provisioning systems offer an innovative solution for DLA to lead and transform its supply chain system once and for all. Before they lose that next $100MM, perhaps the DLA should consider setting an equivalent amount to begin a pilot program to develop a supply chain solution developed on blockchain technologies. I wonder if I submit that idea in to their Fraud, Waste and Abuse Hotline. Now that's a thought! |

IT employs approximately 25,000 employees who handle a wide variety of supply chain functions, providing everything from poultry and beef; medical supplies and pharmaceuticals; fuel supplies; and parts for aircraft, marine vessels, ground vehicles, and weapons systems. That's right - we're talking about \"physical stuff\" then you can see, feel, and get your hands on. \n\nWalmart, which employs some 2.3 million people and can manage 11,700 throughout the world, seems to be capable of managing its enormous supply chain. So what gives at the DLA? Why has the Agency had a track record and of fraud, waste and abuse issues with it supply chain dating back for years? A December 2017 Forbes article pointed out that “on July 26, 2016, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) issued a report \"Army General Fund Adjustments Not Adequately Documented or Supported.' That report alone indicated for fiscal year 2015 the Army failed to provide adequate support for $6.5 trillion in accounting journal voucher adjustments.” This would be cause to fire every person in the accounting department were it a firm in the private sector.\n\nWhile its understandable that with such a large Government agency with so many moving parts, locations, and employees -- none of whom are \"paid for performance\" where financial stewardship is a part of the compensation model -- is bound to have some issues with tracking materiel, the problem appears to be getting worse, not improving. Now that's a thought!",

| body | In an Article printed by the Bitcoinist today, January 23rd, the site indicates that South Korea lawmakers have confirmed cryptocurrency exchanges will become legal January 30,; however, anonymous or "ghost" trading will not be permitted. Here is their article: 6 BANKS ON BOARD FOR CHANGE In its most recent statements, the country’s Financial Services Commission (FSC) confirmed that exchanges must only permit trades from customers whose name matches their bank account. Foreign citizens, both native and non-native, will not be allowed to trade. “Establishment of the system for ‘real name verification of deposit and withdrawal accounts’ for settlement will be completed by January 30, 2018,” the FSC documentation reads.* So far, six of Korea’s major banks have signed up to implement the required monitoring changes following collaboration with the government on inspection of anonymous exchange trading accounts earlier this month. These are Shinhan Bank, Nonghyup Bank, Industrial Bank, Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank and Gwangju Bank. EXCHANGES PREPARE IN ADVANCE In reactions to the setting in stone of the new way of trading cryptocurrency, major exchanges presented various requirements for users. Korbit, one of the leading platforms along with Bithumb, told customers to open an account at Shinhan specifically in order to continue trading. “To use the new KRW deposit method, which is slated to be implemented within this month, you must have a Shinhan Bank account registered under your legal name. Please use this time to create a banking account at Shinhan Bank,” a post states. South Korea Bans Bitcoin Futures As Authorities Consider Crypto Income Tax Foreign-based customers had been able to gain access to the Korean market through virtual bank accounts and other tools, but they, along with minors, now face a moratorium of undetermined length. On Monday, Seoul also addressed the issue of taxation on cryptocurrency exchanges, which are now obliged to pay a corporation tax and local income tax for 2017 profits amounting to 24.2%. Markets continued to fall slightly through Tuesday, with the cementing of Korea’s official regulatory position on crypto trading having little effect on overall flat sentiment. *This quotation is extracted from the first PDF file available in attachments via the source link. | body | Governments will soon realize that if they Ban the use of cryptocommerce in countries that have large rural populations unserved by available financial institutions, they will be doing a great disservice to advancing culture. Many parts of India and Africa are realizing how crypto is giving a "voice" to people who need to trade goods, services, etc., and not having access to banking institutions, but having a phone, crypto becomes the perfect mechanism. How about "Ive got a pen, and I've got a phone, and I'm gonna trade my crypto!" :) |

| body | The recent feeding frenzy for the demand of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies has led to much criticism -- from those pointing to its early elicit use in the dark commerce drug trade (e.g., Silk Road), to global banking CEOs claiming its nothing but a fraudulent bubble waiting to pop, and to market participants, who have expressed frustration with the constipated nature of transaction processing at crypto exchanges. News flash! Most all markets have some amount of fraud. Most all markets experience some level of dark commerce. And most all markets end up frustrating consumers in some way or form, such as not enough product on shelves, ATMs being down, or perhaps unsatisfactorily slow response times when you're trying to reach a live representative to discuss an issue with your credit card. I think we've all been there. Yet the markets endure. It's important to remember that while the dotcom bubble of the early 2000's brought a lot of pain in the form of companies that had no profits to show for the hype they created, it also created enormous value by way of those innovative companies that did succeed in generating entirely new channels of profitable commerce. Furthermore, those who took the risk to jump aboard fared well -- not to mention the huge windfall the US Government received in tax revenues from corporate growth spawned from this period. But drawing a tight parallel between Bitcoin and the Crypto Revolution, and the Dotcom era is not entirely accurate. Here's why. First, the trend in cryptocommerce is much about Trust. Consumer's faith in their financial institutions (e.g., banks, mutual fund companies and retirement plan providers) has been low for several years. A 2016 survey conducted by the National Association of Retirement Plan Participants found that only 8% of respondents felt they had faith in their financial institutions; a decline from 13% in a previous survey done year earlier. While it's safe to say that many consumers choosing to participate in today's crypto market are doing so without knowing all the risks, they feel a sense of empowerment and ownership that they have not felt in more traditional ways of investing or placing their funds. Add to this the general lack of trust that consumers have in the stability of their own currencies in places of the world like Greece, Venezuela, Iran, and China, and cryptocurrencies serve a whole new purpose. Second, it's about utility and changing Culture. For many rural communities in the developing economies of sub-Saharan Africa, for instance, access to financial services is simply non-existent. An explosion of wireless telephony throughout this area of the continent, however, has brought telecommunication capacity into rural areas. According to a study done by the World Bank, with a basic smartphone costing as little as $25, digitizing payments could help to reduce the unbanked population in sub-Saharan Africa by 125 million. In countries like Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, more than 10 percent of adults receive agricultural payments into accounts which often include mobile money accounts. Consequently, the use of cryptocurrency transfers for bartering and trade in these communities is, and will continue, to play a vital role in reducing poverty and improving financial inclusion. Which Brings me to my third argument - it's about Technology and the jobs it will create. Think for a moment: when was the last real breakthrough innovation in technology. Maybe the smartphone? Or perhaps the silicon chip itself? Let's not forget that the very "blockchain" technology upon which Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are built (e.g., verifiable distributed ledger transactional database systems with very secure protocols) is still nascent. The applications of these systems, platforms, and network communities for commerce are still in the discovery phase and have been scarcely tested. Surely, there will be fallout from failures -- but that is a cheap price to pay for the value of innovation that will push society forward. Opportunities exist for combining the use of cryptocurrencies and their blockchain technologies with other aspects of the IT value chain -- mining vast amounts of Big Data to identify market demand for a specific good or service; integrating with artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to help drive timely supply chain decisions; or combining high performance computational algorithms with the monitoring of cryptocurrency traffic flows to serve as early warning indicators to foreign exchange traders who may be curious about the stability of governments and their economies. The possibilities are many. The cryptocommerce revolution is here. With it, will come risks as well as opportunities. Some would prefer to cast it off as some fly-by-night fraud that will see a quick death. However, like other innovations before it, Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies deserve their day in court. We need to pay it some serious attention and listen to how they will change culture, give people of the world a voice, drive technological invention, and perhaps lead our financial institutions to regain the perception of trust and confidence that they have lost with many consumers. |
