The chief work that God \r\nseeks to do in each of His children is to break down \r\nthe strength of self totally. Jesus waited for the old \r\nwine to run out, at Cana, before He did His miracle. \r\nHe is waiting now for our strength to come to an \r\nend. All our failures and defeats are meant by God to \r\nbring us to the end, for He can manifest His power \r\nperfectly only in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). \r\nWe can see the strength of self in the moments of \r\ntemptation and provocation, when we react with \r\nbitter words, angry expressions, self-justification,\r\ncriticism and judgment of others, unforgiving atti￾tudes, a grabbing-love for material things, fighting\r\nfor our rights and our reputation, seeking vengeance \r\netc. These and other similar attitudes show how \r\nstrong self still is in us – the old wine has not yet run \r\nout; and Jesus waits on the sidelines doing nothing \r\nfor us.\r\nIf only we allow God to break us, if only we would \r\nhumble ourselves and gladly accept death to our \r\nrights and reputation, how quickly He could lead \r\nus into life under the new covenant! Seventeen years of dying.\r\nSeventeen years of agonizing pain, dismal loneliness, and\r\nunspeakable depression. At forty years of age, I had\r\nbegun to die.\r\nA year passed. Then two. I had been to half a dozen\r\ndoctors in the Bay Area. One doctor said I had hepatitis.\r\nHe put me to bed and treated me for inflammation of the\r\nliver.
