| body | Absolutely! I'll have to grab the source again, but they clock damages from corporate espionage to be about $1 Trillion globally per year. Stolen IP, lawsuits, production losses, failed deals, etc. All contribute to this massive loss to GDP. The human element isn't really taken into account most of the time. We're so focused on cyber and physical security that we rarely take into account the biggest threat: the people who work for you. Not saying all employees are evil, but your 30 Million Dollar security network of cameras, biometrics, security teams, access control policies, firewalls, smart networks and more, are absolutely worthless if the one threat is able to get into the door every single day. We just think things should be looked at differently. Maybe find out why your employees are unhappy, find out what sort of external factors are affecting them most, and dive into creating better workplaces to be proactive in subverting insider threats. Thanks for the comment! |

| body | Another great and informative post. Focusing back on Jill, Amy's social media may provide insights into Jill. The additional element of time, as the two's relationship develops, so does the content. Jill may tell us more about Amy and Amy will tell us more about Jill. This type of collection doesn't take place over night. Also lets not forget also that both of their banks, insurance companies, credit cards, phone service and whatever else they tied their personal information too, is likely being sold and made publicly available. |

The additional element of time, as the two's relationship develops, so does the content. Jill may tell us more about Amy and Amy will tell us more about Jill. | body | Trevor this was a great read and a pretty good analysis of what could have taken place during the 93 Isla Nubar Incident. Astoundingly, we still struggle, at least in western society with OPSEC and Counterespionage. You would think by now with all the lessons learned both business and government would have caught on. People are an organizations greatest asset and failing to take care of them typically perpetuates the behavior you mention. I recall reading somewhere that corporate espionage costs business like $40 billion a year. That was like 3 or 4 years ago, so i'm sure things have advanced since that time. |

| title | Crossing the Veteran Chasm: Translating Military to Civilian |
| body | https://media-exp2.licdn.com/media/AAEAAQAAAAAAAA0VAAAAJDUzZTc1MDlkLTExYTUtNDA0OS1iMWMyLTAyZGE2YTY0OWE1OQ.jpg I left my naval career in intelligence and communications expecting the world to be handed to me; that my military experience was the only resume I needed to afford myself the opportunities to grow. These are the expectations we leave service with, bred by a culture that tells us that "we are the best!" However, the realities of this experience are much different upon exiting the military. More often than not, we are plagued by being unable to translate our service to those who have not served; leaving an empty chasm of communication between ourselves and our future opportunities. While this is harmful enough to individuals searching for success after service, what's worse about this "chasm" is the fact it does nothing to help non-veterans understand the military experience, leaving much to be assumed. For those who aren't familiar with the military or veterans, there's a huge unknown variable they're forced to solve when encountering us. That mental algebra of "solving for 'x'" leads them towards plugging attributes in that may or may not be true. I recently even heard stories about venture capitalists explaining how they don't invest in veterans because they're all "broken." Now, as much as that ticks me off that someone eliminates an entire group of incredibly qualified people based on assumptions of what a veteran is, a more important question to ask is: "How are veterans communicating their experience?" While your experience in the military was very real and may be equally relevant towards the opportunity you're looking for, you alone have the context to understand the importance of that experience. It is mission essential that veterans find a way to communicate that context to others. Whenever veterans are explaining their service to non-veterans, they should be answering the following questions: 1. Why have I chosen to share ____? 2. What is the relevance of _____? 3. How is ____ of use to ____? NOTE: If you have to explain "what" your experience was too much, chances are it's either not relevant to who you're addressing or your respective audience isn't going to understand. Keep your explanations short and to the point. The general rule of thumb that was explained to me in flight school: if you truly understand something, you should be able to explain it in one sentence or less. If veterans are going to be successful, they need to master the skill of condensing their experiences down to relevant, easy to digest bites for people to understand the distinction of why veterans are the best investment for their company. The military has afforded veterans some of the most diverse and unique experiences in the world. Whether you're a startup, an investor, an established company, a non-profit or any other organization, if you can afford to have a veteran on your team you are investing in valuable perspectives that can always be capitalized on to build stronger teams, leadership and above all else an unwavering dedication towards accomplishing challenging or seemingly impossible tasks. **About the Author** Trevor Kincy is a subject matter expert on human security and intelligence, a startup veteran, growth marketer, community-building guru, and more importantly one hell of a pillow fort engineer. "body": "https://media-exp2.licdn.com/media/AAEAAQAAAAAAAA0VAAAAJDUzZTc1MDlkLTExYTUtNDA0OS1iMWMyLTAyZGE2YTY0OWE1OQ.jpg\n\nI left my naval career in intelligence and communications expecting the world to be handed to me; that my military experience was the only resume I needed to afford myself the opportunities to grow. These are the expectations we leave service with, bred by a culture that tells us that \"we are the best!\" However, the realities of this experience are much different upon exiting the military. More often than not, we are plagued by being unable to translate our service to those who have not served; leaving an empty chasm of communication between ourselves and our future opportunities. While this is harmful enough to individuals searching for success after service, what's worse about this \"chasm\" is the fact it does nothing to help non-veterans understand the military experience, leaving much to be assumed.\n\nFor those who aren't familiar with the military or veterans, there's a huge unknown variable they're forced to solve when encountering us. That mental algebra of \"solving for 'x'\" leads them towards plugging attributes in that may or may not be true. I recently even heard stories about venture capitalists explaining how they don't invest in veterans because they're all \"broken.\" Now, as much as that ticks me off that someone eliminates an entire group of incredibly qualified people based on assumptions of what a veteran is, a more important question to ask is: \"How are veterans communicating their experience?\"\n\nWhile your experience in the military was very real and may be equally relevant towards the opportunity you're looking for, you alone have the context to understand the importance of that experience. It is mission essential that veterans find a way to communicate that context to others. Whenever veterans are explaining their service to non-veterans, they should be answering the following questions:\n\n1. Why have I chosen to share ____?\n2. What is the relevance of _____?\n3. How is ____ of use to ____?\n\nNOTE: If you have to explain \"what\" your experience was too much, chances are it's either not relevant to who you're addressing or your respective audience isn't going to understand. Keep your explanations short and to the point. The general rule of thumb that was explained to me in flight school: if you truly understand something, you should be able to explain it in one sentence or less.\n\nIf veterans are going to be successful, they need to master the skill of condensing their experiences down to relevant, easy to digest bites for people to understand the distinction of why veterans are the best investment for their company. The military has afforded veterans some of the most diverse and unique experiences in the world. Whether you're a startup, an investor, an established company, a non-profit or any other organization, if you can afford to have a veteran on your team you are investing in valuable perspectives that can always be capitalized on to build stronger teams, leadership and above all else an unwavering dedication towards accomplishing challenging or seemingly impossible tasks.\n\n\n**About the Author**\n\nTrevor Kincy is a subject matter expert on human security and intelligence, a startup veteran, growth marketer, community-building guru, and more importantly one hell of a pillow fort engineer.\n\nFollow him on [Twitter](http://twitter.com/trevorkincy), [LinkedIn](http://linkedin.com/in/trevorkincy) and [Medium!](http://medium.com/trevorkincy)\n\n*More stories from Trevor:*\n[Jurassic Park: A Lesson in Corporate Security](https://steemit.com/intelligence/@trevorkincy/jurassic-park-a-lesson-in-corporate-espionage)\n[6 Ways Startup Founders Are Going to Crush It In 2018](https://steemit.com/startups/@trevorkincy/6-ways-startup-founders-are-going-to-crush-it-in-2018)\n[Security Between The Lines: The Human Element](https://steemit.com/security/@trevorkincy/security-between-the-lines-the-human-element)",

| body | https://media-exp2.licdn.com/media/AAIA_wDGAAAAAQAAAAAAAAq8AAAAJGVlZjhlYTE2LTA1M2MtNGNlZC1iMDZkLTI2YTBlYmMyMWFjMw.jpg Did you upload a photo? Make that post? Check-in? Tag a friend? Hashtag something? Swipe? Connect, friend or follow? Of course you did. You're here. You're reading this, and some of you might even "like this." It's no secret this sort of data is bought, sold and tracked at any given moment in time. As a former intelligence analyst, these areas were venerable gold mines for sourcing data on people and organisations. However, what many fail to understand is just how accessible this information is to everyone else, and how that information can be used. While those photos, posts and likes may seem like harmless bits of ones and zeros saved for only your inner circles to see, in the wrong hands open-source data can be incredibly destructive to not only yourself, but those you're connected to. Many carry the attitude of not having anything to hide. Whilst that may be true from a legal perspective, I would argue those people unnecessarily expose themselves and those in their network, to outside threats. Let's dive into how with an experiment I ran with a close friend of mine recently: My friend (let's call her "Jill") only has an Instagram account. Jill's very careful not to post any personally identifiable information, but she does have a public account (like many others) and doesn't personally know all of her followers. I explained to Jill that I could probably find an exploit in her Instagram she wasn't aware of, and so began the experiment. She met a friend while at a concert in Las Vegas, and they took a photo together she posted on Instagram. Her new friend, (let's call her "Amy") simply commented on the photo, but it was enough to get me started. Her Instagram was also public, and her photos and information of her account led me to her Facebook and other media. Within 15 minutes, I had collected the following on Amy: * Amy's full name * Amy's birth date * Where Amy works * Where Amy goes to the gym (and how often) * What movies she's seen (since 2009) * Her family members, ages, relation. * What her favorite drink was (and surprisingly what her least favorite drink was too) * Where she frequents on the weekends * The kind of music Amy enjoys * Her relationship history * Her political affiliations * What music festivals she's attending over the next four months (and who with.) * And many more details! All of this, collected based on Jill's post, and Amy's comment. I knew more about Amy in 15 minutes than Jill knew over the entire weekend they spent together. This information could be used for everything from phishing to terrorism. The sheer amount of data we put out into the world about our personal lives is startling (for more information, read this article from The Guardian: "I asked Tinder for my data. It sent me 800 pages of my deepest, darkest secrets") Individuals aren't the only ones at risk here; organisations are just as susceptible. Whilst most organisations focus their efforts on physical and cyber security, they fail to see the threats from within: the human element. The annual costs of corporate espionage are measured in the billions world-wide across a diverse range of industries. Modern day exploitation requires more complexity and human involvement than simply hacking into a mainframe or breaking into a business. People are often the weakest elements of any organisation, more accessible and just as vulnerable to exploitation as a poor password or a bad lock. Decoding people, and their network is the first step in mounting a proper defense against corporate espionage. | title | 6 Ways Startup Founders Are Going to Crush It In 2018 |
| body | Welcome to 2018. You’ve probably been here before; echoing those cliched resolutions and hashtagging “New Year, New Me.” That idea you’ve been marinading on, or working your ass off for is still stuck for a variety of reasons. A new year may not even mean that much to you, if you’ve been striving for the past few years to build something great. I’m here to tell you, this year is different; and it needs to be. As a founder myself, I’ve been where you’re at. Seems like you’re being beat over the head and dragged away from you passion over something different every week. Even worse is that feeling that no one understands what you’re doing or what you’re trying to accomplish. Startups are tough. However, it’s 2018 now, so it’s time to suck it up buttercup! Get gritty because here’s 6 reasons why this year matters: *6. Taxes* Doesn’t matter what your political affiliation is, if you’re in business, you’re in luck. The United States has had notoriously high taxes on business for quite some time. In fact, up until this year, the US has nabbed the top 3 spot for the highest corporate taxes in the world! Kicking our taxes down from 35% to 25% is a huge deal, and one that you need to be taking advantage of this year to rock your business! *5. Resources, Everywhere!* So check it out, getting started or unstuck can and is a giant pain in the ass if you have no idea where to look for tools, advice or resources. There are more resources to help you at whatever stage you’re at than ever before. In fact, even we’re here to help at The Loop! Stay tuned for more on that by following us. *4. Tools for Days* You’ve got resources, but more importantly you’ve got tools to go hand in hand on your founder’s journey. You need a handle on your biz? Get some tools. Accounting. Social Media Management. Email Marketing. I mean, hell, they have tools to manage your tools now! If you’re looking for something to manage that investor startup relationship, be sure to check out www.angelloop.com! *3. Widespread Optimism* Let’s be honest, 2016 and 2017 have been some pretty shit years. However, there are tons of folks betting big and doubling down on everything from investments to new markets in business. If ever there as a better time to get into the mix or relaunch your brand (the right way) this is it. Don’t screw up your opportunity to build! *2. We Have the Technology* The optimism in new markets is not ill placed. Emerging tech such as Artificial Intelligence, Block-Chain, Virtual Reality and many more are exploding. Even if that’s not your industry, the widespread applications of those markets accelerating can help boost an incredible amount of business through the opportunities they help enable. Everything from the fabled “Initial Coin Offering” promised by crypto currencies to the A.I. powered future of delivering customer service has an impact on how business is being done in 2018. *1. You* 2018 could be a stellar year for everyone else, but it’s you who has to make it that way for yourself. Use this year to find great mentors, absorb knowledge like your life depended on it, and interact with real people to understand their needs to get your product/service right. You’re your own worst enemy, don’t forget to fight for what you want; even if that fight is against yourself. **About the Author** Trevor Kincy is a subject matter expert on human security and intelligence, a startup veteran, growth marketer, community-building guru, and more importantly one hell of a pillow fort engineer. | title | Jurassic Park: A Lesson in Corporate Espionage |
| body | Ah, Jurassic Park – the timeless classic by author Michael Crichton brought to life by Stephen Spielberg to audiences world-wide on the silver screen in 1993. If you're familiar with the film, then you know things didn't go too well for Doctor Hammond's guests to the dino-filled theme park. However, did you know that the incident on Isla Nublar (which resulted in no less than five deaths) was the product of corporate espionage? Let's look into the factors which caused the events in question to happen. **Competitors at War** It's important to get to know the fictional organisations that surround the events which transpired at Isla Nublar in Costa Rica. At the helm of Jurassic Park is Palo Alto based InGen; who created proprietary methods involving gene editing to produce dinosaurs, ultimately making the park possible. In Cupertino, competitor Biosyn had been attempting to replicate the success InGen had with little to no luck. In order to remain relevant, Biosyn resorted in attempts to recover embryos from InGen labs to help make a breakthrough. **The Disgruntled Employee** Hired as a computer programmer at Jurassic Park by InGen, Dennis Nedry helped develop some of the security systems which helped manage park safety by ensuring the visitors and dinosaurs remained separate. Falling upon difficult financial times, Nedry believed InGen was not compensating him fairly. In fact, during a conversation with John Hammond, Nedry explicitly tells Hammond: "I am totally unappreciated in my time. You can run this whole park from this room with minimal staff for up to 3 days. You think that kind of automation is easy? Or cheap? You know anybody who can network 8 connection machines and debug 2 million lines of code for what I bid for this job? Because if he can I'd like to see him try. " Hammond responded curtly, "I'm sorry about your financial problems, Dennis, I really am, but they are your problems." Nedry was clearly over-worked and underpaid despite communicating this issues to his superiors. Regardless of whether Nedry's financial difficulties were his own, his concerns are an issue that goes unaddressed by management at InGen. **Desperate Measures** Lewis Dodgson is a leading scientist at BioSyn known for his practice of fringe science and illegal activities surrounding his work. In fact, so nefarious was his work, that he was best known for his rabies vaccine testing on Chilean farmers without their knowledge or consent. Dodgson met with BioSyn's Board of Directors to get approval to steal embryo's from InGen in order to develop their own, without violating InGen's patents. **The $1.5M Catalyst** Dodgson arrived in Costa Rica to meet with Nedry. It's unclear how Dodgson and Nedry know each other, however we assess that Dodgson had been developing Nedry as a source for quite some time prior to their meeting. During the meeting, a sum of no less than $750,000 in cash was given to Nedry, along with a fake Barbosol shaving-cream canister, which held inserts for the stolen embryos to be transported in. This is textbook tradecraft, and a clear intent to hide activities relating to espionage. To further Nedry's disgruntled attitude towards Hammond he even goes as far as to tell Dodson, "Don't get cheap on me, Dodgson. That was Hammond's mistake. " A deal was made for half of the money up front, for Nedry to steal embryos from the labs at InGen and another $50,000 dollars per a "viable embryo" upon delivery with a grand total of $1.5 million up for grabs. **Poorly Executed Cyber Attack** Nedry's plan to bypass security was to cycle Jurassic Park's security systems under a false diagnostics test. The backdoor program he wrote (Whte_rbt.obj) was designed to shut down all systems except for the highly violent Velociraptor paddock. However, a tropical storm accelerated the timeline, forcing Nedry to execute this plan prior to the program being adequately tested. Nedry excused himself from his co-workers to get a soda, stating: >"Oh, I finished de-bugging the phones, but the system's compiling for eighteen minutes, or twenty. So, some minor >systems may go on and off for a while. There's nothing to worry about. Simple thing...." In ten minutes, Nedry collected ten years of InGen research into a can and was off to the docks before getting into an accident in a Jeep and was ultimately killed by a dinosaur, as a result of his failed code and attempted corporate espionage. **Nedry's Damage to InGen** Due to the park wide system failures caused by Nedry's code, six people died on Isla Nubar in three days (June 11th-13th). Known as "1993 Isla Nublar Incident," InGen's damages were reportedly $126 million (in 1993 dollars.) Adjusted for inflation, InGen today would have suffered $213,446,615 in total damages from the single incident caused by botched corporate espionage. **My Assessment** There's a few glaring factors that we'd like to address here. First, if InGen had any idea BioSyn was competing with them, and was desperate to do so, that would have promoted an investigation into the company, their practices and their key players. Next, we'd want to know "who are their unhappy employees?" Experience has shown us employees who aren't satisfied by their compensation, are in difficult financial circumstances and/or have issues with management are some of the most vulnerable to betray the trust of a company and involve themselves with corporate espionage. Nedry was in a position of trust with InGen, working on sensitive park systems architecture, which makes him a prime target for competing firms given his access. Also of note, Jurassic Park had a checkered past with safety, with a few notable fatal accidents at the facility covered up by InGen. These sort of events also leave organisations vulnerable to very public issues should those incidents become public without a controlled release of information managed by a Public Relations specialist. They can not only damaging to investor relations and customers, but leave organisations and employees vulnerable to blackmail and other human-centered security issues. Having a firm like ours do due diligence to better insure security at your organisation is a great way to objectively see where your blind spots are, and create solutions that better protect the future of your company. **Bringing it All Together** While your company may not be creating the next theme park filled with genetically engineered Dinosaurs, corporate espionage can damage you company regardless of it's success or failure. Sometimes, the failure of an attempted espionage event can cause far more damage that stolen IP. Protect yourself by bringing in experts to independently evaluate human security at your organisation. |
