From one place to another he went, until, at long last, when he could fly no further, he came upon a large pitcher of water at the base of a tree. Overjoyed, the thirsty crow thrust its jet-black beak inside to drink his fill. But, alas, the pitcher had a narrow neck! Try as he might, the despairing crow couldn’t get his head far enough inside. To his dismay, he realized the water was out of reach The thirsty crow cried out and flapped his wings in anguish. He attempted to knock the pitcher over. But to no avail. It was too heavy for his weary, dehydrated body to budge. The crow was on the verge of exhaustion and ready to fly elsewhere. But then an idea came to him. Around the base of the pitcher sat some small round pebbles. Picking them up, one by one, the thirsty crow dropped them into the pitcher. Again and again he placed these stones inside. And with every extra pebble, the water level began to rise… His idea worked. Eventually, after much toil, the water rose so high inside the pitcher that the clever crow was able to drink his fill and sate his thirst for good. MORAL OF THIRSTY CROW STORY #1 What can we learn from this short story of the thirsty crow? First, that “necessity’s the mother of invention”. In moments of difficulty, you have to rise to the challenge! Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And when something of significance is on the line, it’s up to you to defy the odds and grab victory from the arms of defeat. For the thirsty crow, who was so tantalizingly close to the water he needed (and yet so far), he had to think outside the box to get the result he needed. There’s another related lesson to take from this: Never give up. Or, “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”. The crow didn’t quit when things weren’t going his way! He searched long and hard for something to drink. He didn’t crumble or surrender to his fate when he realized the water was out of his reach. And nor was he deterred when his first, physical attempts to access it failed. He kept at it. And, eventually, after trial, error, frustration, and failure, he got his prize. Another moral of thirsty crow is all about using creativity and intellect to solve your problems instead of excessive effort! There’s also something in there about using intellect over force, brains over brawn, and working smart instead of hard to achieve your goals. This idea almost feels taboo! After all, in a world that celebrates effort, hustle, and hard work, it’s tempting to tell yourself that the only way to succeed in life is by working yourself into the ground. It’s almost like the process has to hurt. If it doesn’t, you’re doing something wrong. …And you’ll never get to where you want to go. I’m 100% guilty of this approach to work! So I have to remind myself all the time that it doesn’t always apply. You have to work hard, for sure. Big goals involve a high degree of “grind”. Yet, sometimes, you have to hit pause and step back. Breaks help you destress, avoid burnout, and gather your energy to get back to work with renewed vigour. Furthermore, if you can achieve the same or a similar result with a fraction of the effort, surely that’s a better option? A good example of this is the 80-20 rule, otherwise known as the Pareto Principle, which states that 80% of outcomes tend to come from 20% of inputs. By focusing your efforts on those “vital few” factors that contribute 80% of results, you can achieve similar outcomes with one-fifth of the effort. The thirsty crow may not employ the 80-20 rule in this story. But he definitely solves his problem with a simple and inspired solution. And this speaks to yet another takeaway from the tale: That success is usually a result of creativity and critical thinking, combined with trial, error, and effort…not pure good luck. DON’T FORGET THE SHORT STORY OF THIRSTY CROW There you have it, then: the super insightful thirsty crow story! It’s short and sweet, but full of useful lessons for us all to learn- especially if you’re going through a challenging time or desperately trying to achieve a goal.
