      "body": "Puss in Boots differs from other classic fairy tales by its iffy title character. While most of the other classics feature humans in leading roles, Puss' master doesn't really do anything crucial here except for sparing Puss' life at the beginning of the story. All other characters (except for an ogre) are humans as well, yet Puss proves to be the most industrious and smartest of all.\n\nPuss starts in the role of some kind of consolation prize. Older brothers inherited useful stuff and the younger got the cat. His initial idea was to skin it, so he could at least have a pair of gloves, Puss convinced him to spare his life.\n\nIn exchange, Puss starts a series of actions by which his master becomes popular with the king, earns his respect and admiration, and eventually marries his daughter, the princess. At the same time, Puss climbs up the social ladder as well. From an unimportant cat, he becomes a representative of an imaginary nobleman, from apparent wealth creates true real estates, and in the end guarantees himself a position at the court.\n\nHe achieves that by stealing, lying, scheming, and flattery, and doesn't stop before he becomes a murderer as well. It's much easier to explain the consequences of Fatima's curiosity in The Bluebeard (https://steemit.com/bluebeard/@tolovaj/what-makes-the-story-of-bluebeard-so-controversial) or the sacrifice of Belle in Beauty and the Beast (https://steemit.com/beauty/@tolovaj/short-summary-of-beauty-and-the-beast) than the resourceful and treacherous behavior of Puss. Maybe it could do with an explanation of Puss' intuitive powers (based on the understanding of how this world works, really) to find a weak point in any character he comes in contact with. Everybody has his own vice. One responds to flattery, the other to threats. Even master's mercy is used to Puss' full advantage. But do we want to teach our children how to become an exploiter?\n\nAnyway, Puss in Boots makes a very important contribution to world literature by simply showing that no starting point is not so bad (in this case, Puss' and his master's), it could not be improved to very satisfying achievements. Life is not fair, but you can (and should) still make the best of it.",

      "title": "Is Snow White Actually a Conglomerate of Other Fairy Tales?",
      "body": "Snow White is one of the most popular classic fairy tales. It owes a large part of its popularity to Snow White and Seven Dwarfs, a full-length animated movie by Disney.\n\nLet's limit our exploration to the 'original', written by the Brothers Grimm, published in their second edition of Children and Household Tales.\n\nThe story begins with yearning. The queen is wishing for a child after she pricks her finger and three drops of blood fell on the white snow.\n\nWe already have several popular elements of other fairy tales:\n\n- fairy tale number three (repeated in this very story at least ten times) is very popular in numerous tales (Wolf and Three Little Pigs has it in the title, of course, but the collection of Brothers Grimm has 17 (!) fairy tales with number three in their titles) as a way to repeat or escalate some action;\n\n- symbolic power of colors (red, white, black) is well exploited in other fairy tales (remember Red Riding Hood?);\n\n- woman yearning to become a mother is also an often used element (Tom Thumb aka Thumbling by Brothers Grimm, for instance);\n\nAfter the birth, the mother dies, and the father remarries. Stepmother pans out as a wicked person and father doesn't protect his own kid.\n\n\n![snow-white-evil-queen.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXyevSk4V98c42WTkDBwFqVPRaBp3HzUkyhAT7CpBaV6v/snow-white-evil-queen.jpg)\n\n\n- First wicked and dangerous step-mother coming to thoughts is from Hansel and Grethel, but the corpus of fairy tales is loaded with similar examples (Mother Holle, Juniper Tree, ...);\n\n- absent and/or incompetent father is a regular element as well (Hansel and Grethel, again, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty (https://steemit.com/sleeping/@tolovaj/summary-of-the-sleeping-beauty), Cinderella, Rumpelstiltskin, ...)\n\nWhen Snow White escapes, she finds a sanctuary in the house in the woods where she gets some help from magical beings.\n\n- a cottage in the forest can serve as a great hideout (Three Litle Men in the Woods, Snow White and Rose Red, Town Musicians of Bremen, Little Brother and Little Sister, ...), but in most cases, the solution is just temporary;\n\n\n![snow-white-being-tested.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRXoU3dyFe6iXKRr9c2TsTSsKxW7Rz39KaQAx8ThasHXT/snow-white-being-tested.jpg)\n\n\n- magical helper is a popular element after which the whole literary genre got its name (fairy!): we got fairies in Sleeping Beauty, a wolf in Golden Bird, a dwarf in Rumpelstiltskin, and even Virgin Mary helps in Mary's Child, ...\n\nDespite magical helpers the main character (in our case Snow White) can't escape the cruel destiny: she dies (or at least seems so). Then another helper comes by, a resurrection follows and we got a happy ending.\n\n- just like the good fairy from Sleeping Beauty couldn't protect the title character, the wolf's bits of advice from Golden Bird was promptly ignored, or a test by Bluebeard (https://steemit.com/bluebeard/@tolovaj/what-makes-the-story-of-bluebeard-so-controversial) was not passed, Snow White couldn't resist stuff brought by the evil queen;\n\n- Snow White has seven (!) magical helpers and this was still not enough, but still, we should mention the clever usage of another magical number in the mix;\n\n- a theme of resurrection (or at least the huge importance of sleep) is well-presented among classic fairy tales too (Sleeping Beauty, of course, but also Red Riding Cap, Brave Little Tailor, Beauty and the Beast (https://steemit.com/beauty/@tolovaj/short-summary-of-beauty-and-the-beast), ...);\n\n- last helper is in many cases a future life partner (Prince Charming being the obvious example), but we can find other helpers as well (a servant in Rumpelstiltskin, a hunter in Red Riding Hood, or even Mother Goat in Wolf and Seven Kids).\n\n\n![snow-white-resurrection.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPAUyiUGuqujxErG8TWqESeDHmn8FvgABE1yqLGzmbKGL/snow-white-resurrection.jpg)\n\n\nThe last element to mention is an act of revenge. Brothers Grimm as lawyers by education loved to punish bad guys and Snow White is not an exception.\n\n- cruel punishment is one of the signature elements in the Grimm's Fairy Tales (in Juniper Tree, the stepmother is killed by a stone falling on her head, witch in Hansel and Grethel is burned in the oven, wicked step-sisters in Cinderella lost their eyes, ...), yet they were not alone (wolf in Three Little Pigs dies too, sisters in Beauty and the Beast are turned into statues, ...).\n\nYes, of course, we could use several other fairy tales and similarly analyze them.       "body": "Bluebeard is a fairy tale that essentially tells a story about a serial killer who is testing his wife with the key to a forbidden room. She has a tool to unlock it but is forbidden to do so. But fortunately for her, her sister calls for help and two brothers of the condemned wife return just in time to kill the Bluebeard, secure her a huge inheritance and the story ends with some kind of happy end.\n\nWell, this story was among the most popular ones in the 18th, 19th, and first decades of the 20th century. Today it's almost forgotten and very rarely at least included in collections of classic fairy tales. Why? Because the title character is so strange? There are many other popular tales with unconventional characters.\n\nA blue beard may look out of this world but the same is true, for instance, for Rapunzel's extremely long hair or, if we stay limited to particular personal characteristics, Goose Girl's golden-colored hair.\n\nThe cruelty in the story should not be the reason for falling out of popularity, because in Hansel and Grethel we deal with cannibalism, infanticide, and burning the wicked witch alive in her oven. Cutting parts of Cinderella's sisters' feet or dancing in the hot iron shoes of Snow White's stepmother belongs to the same category. Cruelty is an important part of fairy tales and Bluebeard is not an exception.\n\nMy theory is, although, a bit controversial, that Bluebeard lost its shine due to something different - globalization.\n\nWhen Charles Perrault published the first collection of modern fairy tales (Bluebeard being one of them, the world was different. There was a clash between the Christian and Muslim religions. While the only description of Bluebeard is the color of his beard, illustrators immediately started portraying him in typical Muslim attire. He has a turban, wide pants, and a scimitar. He obviously comes from a different cultural and religious environment. Fairy tale characters in most cases don't have names. They are called by some characteristic (like Snow White, Cinderella, or Red Riding Hood), or profession (miller, tailor). Even if they have names, it's always generic. In the collection of Brothers Grimm, we can find dozens of characters with the name Hans or Grethel.\n\nBut not in the Bluebeard. The sisters are named Fatima and Anne, both very popular names in Muslim or Christian environments for centuries. The ending, when Fatima gets her husband's possessions, is somehow controversial. Women were not inheriting properties at those times. Even when a husband died before the male heir was born, the inheritance was just formal. In reality, brothers, fathers, or other male relatives controlled the properties.\n\nIn the fairy tale of Bluebeard, this is solved with the arrival of brothers at the scene and a quick marriage with another man.\n\nToday, such a presentation of relationships between men and women is outdated. Merchant gets a few days to farewell with his family. Then he must be back and face his punishment - death. But Beauty wants to take his place.\n\nBeauty moves to the castle and meets the Beast. He is very nice and they became friends. He even asks her to marry him. She likes him but not enough to become his wife. After a while, she dreams about her father. He is sick and she wants to visit him. The Beast allows her but she must promise to come back in a month. Otherwise, he will die.\n\nWhen Beauty returns and tells her family about the Beast her sisters become jealous. They want him to die. They trick her to stay longer then she should. When she returns the Beast is very ill. She realizes how important he is to her and promises him a marriage. His health almost immediately improves. Then he transforms into a handsome prince.\n\nHer love broke the spell. They invite her family to his castle and the father starts living with them. Her jealous sisters transform into statues made of stone, forced to look at Beauty's happiness forever after.\n\n<h2>Characters</h2>\n\nBeauty: She is clearly the main character. She starts as a rich daughter, falls with her father, and climbs up the social ladder on her own. She is nice, pretty, and sacrificial. She loves her father and is able to see beyond the Beast's ugliness to reveal his true character. Readers can easily identify with her, or, better, ideal she represents.\nBeast: He is less important than Beauty. We don't learn a lot about his personality. We just follow his transformation which is, to be honest, pretty selfish. If he didn't become sick, she wouldn't discover how important is the Beast to her.\nSisters: They act as the contrast to Beauty. She is humble and they are presumptuous. She is nice and they are not. She is selfless and they are selfish. She is truthful and they are hypocritical. They, not the Beast are true opponents to Beauty and her love.\n\n<h2>Versions</h2>\n\n* First literary version of Beauty and the Beast was written by Madame Barbot de Villeneuve. It's a lengthier variation of the story described above. The merchant had twelve kids (six boys and six girls), but their dramatic function is close to non-existent. She fulfills the prophecy and falls asleep. After that, she's a mere trophy.\nKing: He is the main character. He tries to protect his only child and fails. This is the most important message of the fairy tale - no matter what, your children will grow up. And growing up means making mistakes!\nVicious fairy: She is jealous and punishes the royal couple where it hurts most. She curses their daughter. Viscous fairy is by far the most interesting character from a dramatic point of view in this story.\nPrince: Sometimes named Prince Charming doesn't really do anything. He just shows in the right place at the right time. He doesn't have to fight. He doesn't have to be clever. His function is simple. He just has to show up and the curse will end. There are only the main ones from the scholars' perspective:\n1. Legend of Brunhild\nBrunhild has to choose in an argument between two kings and Odin is not happy with her choice. She is punished by falling into sleep and surrounded by fire. But Sigurd gets through the flames and rescues her. But their love doesn't last because they were tricked.\n2. Sun, Moon, and Talia (by Gianbattista Basile)\nAstrologers predict that a newborn princess will prick her finger and fall asleep from which she won't wake anymore. When this happens she is left in the castle but a prince who hunts in the neighborhood finds her. He sleeps with her and later she gets two kids: Sun and Moon, who are taken care of by invisible hands. Moon sucks a flax splinter out of Talia's finger and she wakes up. The prince returns and they fall in love. The problem is he is already married (no kids) and his wife finds out about his unfaithfulness. However, her plot for revenge turns against her and the prince starts a new family with Talia.\n3. Sleeping Beauty in the Woods (by Charles Perrault)\nIn this version, we already have the angry fairy who curses the princess at birth. A prince comes to the rescue and they marry. But his mother is a cannibal and after they move to his castle (and get two kids), she tries to eat her daughter-in-law together with both children. There are only four fairies altogether, three good ones and evil one. The princess and the prince fall in love before she is pricked. She falls asleep later and the prince has to rescue her by killing a dragon.
