So, here's another installment of the Balance in this week's Personal Log. We all have a balance for success, and we're all human and get off the wagon. I'm sharing my struggles and achievements of personal development in the hopes it starts a discussion about things like mental health, personal well being, and simply taking care of yourself. At the very least, it's a place for me to talk about the human side of science. Plus, this is a space science show and last I checked we are all still in human form. If we can't handle ourselves on Earth, how are we expected to survive in the infinite vacuum of space without going mad or becoming unstable? Will we just continue the madness we see today but on other planets?? Never mind actually having a colony on another planet like Mars and not have it dissolve into complete anarchy. So, let's start talking about the human side of science - I'll start. | title | SpaceX Starship & CRS 18, LightSail2 on Solar Propulsion, and India's Moon Mission | TIS 159 |
| body | https://youtu.be/z9K3fr7oZ-o On this week's episode, we go deep and cover some major Orbital news from Earth's space industry - catching you up on what's new in Space. Lightsail2 now using propulsion thanks to Solar Pressure SpaceX had a successful CRS18 launch followed up by a docking of the Dragon spacecraft on ISS to resupply the 6 crew members onboard with supplies and experiments. Follow us @todayinspacepod on Instagram and Twitter for more space and science Follow us @ag3dprinting on Instagram and Twitter to learn about 3D printing! Facebook Page /TodayInSpacePodcast todayinspace.net Hope you have a great week, stay safe, and spread love and science! Alex G. Orphanos Orbital News: Lightsail2 had a successful deployment July 23rd solar sail deployment - something the entire team at the Planetary Society should be proud of! Big shout out to SpaceX for having the Falcon Heavy created to send it into orbit. This is the first time this has ever been done - that solar pressure powered a spacecraft. Testing on how well this technique can work is underway, but already it’s been shown that solar pressure raised the orbit of a cubesat without any additional power, thrusters, or mass used to do so This will be a huge opportunity as a fuel source for cubesats. If you haven’t ever seen a cubesat, if you’re watching on Youtube you can see this but for everyone else listening, I am holding a cube that can fit in my hand. This would be a 1U, or 1 U Cubesat. These can be stacked to create larger spacecraft, but provide a cheap and efficient way of launching spacecraft. Since weight is everything when launching into space, the lighter the payload the better. With this small size comes the issue of in space propulsion. You can’t pack alot of fuel into something this small. So, it might limit what you could do farther than low earth orbit. NASA already sent one to Mars. Without more fuel this means most cubesat missions will be short. But with a solar sail, you could potentially have long duration missions with small spacecraft. It will take a long time to go anywhere, it’s not a very quick fuel source, but you can enable a cubesat to do a whole lot more with solar power. But the big advantage is with larger spacecraft. Being able to coast on the pressure of the sun would allow for more efficient missions. If they get good enough they could help propel from star to star. Again, very slow, but possible if you get enough speed going initially. You can see some early interviews with Carl Sagan if you want to have your mind blown about the possibilities of solar sails. The other thing is fuel cost - fuel is expensive, both in how much it is worth, and how much weight it takes up. A solar sail provides a cost efficient way to travel space. SpaceX had a successful CRS18 launch on July 25th, 2019 followed up by a docking of the Dragon spacecraft on ISS to resupply the 6 crew members onboard with supplies and experiments. One of the payloads on board is the precursor to 3D printing organs - . Apparently, Earths gravity has a major impact on 3d printing organs and prevents us from going farther. They will be testing it in microgravity to see if it creates better organs in 3D. If we look back to when the first plastic parts were 3d printed in orbit, it was found that they objects printed in orbit had better adhesion and strength properties. They were better parts in certain ways. Will organic material be better? We’ll find out! You can find out more about this science mission and the others that came onboard thanks to the CRS-18 mission and SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. This was first dragon capsule to launch on 3 missions - hat trick SpaceX broadcast was really next level - and NASA’s live broadcast for CRS-18 had some really great moments and they are trying difference formats! I remember seeing four different broadcasters who would share time leading up to launch sharing information about weather, the payloads, breaking down the launch profille, etc. Payloads on board the ISS now thanks to CRS-18 include a bio 3-D printer that will start 3-D printing cardiac tissue in orbit to see if zero gravity creates better conditions for the layers to bond while printing While a future where we can print a heart as it organ replacement in space is many years away at this point, this bio printer will allow for testing of techniques early on that will make it help advance the ability to actually print a fully functioning organ replacement. Some of these techniques will try to 3Dprint open cylinders that would represent blood vessels, hollow cavities similar to those found in human organs like the heart. The bioprinter is called the BioFactory Facility, or BFF. Kind of convenient for the future when you call up your BFF because you need a new liver and your BFF starts making you a new liver in space. Anyways, the BFF bioprinter will use three basic materials to create organic parts - cells, proteins, and nutrients. BFF’s stated mission is to push the limits of what can be bioprinted in microgravity. The ISS is also sending up slime to the international space station for its continuing education efforts. They’ll show what slime acts like in orbit. If you haven’t seen their videos of water in orbit where they actually I think play ping-pong with a bottle of water. There’s a link in this weeks episode you can check it out. My favorite astronaut for this type of inspirational educational content has been Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. Another major payload on board is the international docking adapter 3, or IDA-3. It is the new standard for spacecraft docking with the ISS including human rated spacecraft like SpaceX’s crew dragon, NASA’s Orion, and Boeing’s Starliner CST– 100. The major upgrade of the IDA would allow for a future procedure, if I recall properly, that would use a laser guided docking procedure to allow for safe, guided docking to the ISS. This will be crucial for when regular docking of crewed spacecraft becomes a more regular thing. This should allow higher human traffic to and from the ISS. IDA-1 was lost on CRS-7 on June 28, 2015. But a few months later SpaceX launched the IDA – 2 on July of 2016 for CRS-9 and it was installed in August of the same year. And - the Demo 1 or DM-1 dragon capsule that launched in March of this year docked with the ISS on March 3rd using IDA-2. Now, the international space station has major upgrade capability for the future of human travel to low earth orbit. SpaceX also had a successful 20m hop of the Starship water tank, a link to that is in the episodes description and at todayinspace.net. Elon said that as soon as next week we could see another, higher hop, and a SpaceX Starship update will come which should reveal some new developments. Elon musk stated that yes, an update was coming which would include a detailed review of the first orbital Starship, explaining the pros & cons of each design decision. We’ll update you on that in the future after the event India’s launch to the moon was successful - and they are on the long, controlled, underpowered journey to the Moon. To be more specific, the way that India’s Moon lander, rover, and orbiter combo will get to the moon for the Chadrayaan-2 mission will take longer than the Apollo 11 mission and apollo program architecture. Why is that? Well, India’s rocket the GSLV MK-III that launed Chandrayann-2 is not as powerful as the Saturn V. Meaning, the GSLV MK-III can’t lift heavy payloads as high and as fast as the Saturn V could. This doesn’t mean you can’t get to the moon tho. This just means India’s second mission to the Moon will take a lot longer. More orbits around Earth to raise your orbit and increase speed enough to slingshot to the Moon and lower into orbit there. Very exciting times for India and I wish the team goodluck on the next stage of their mission putting that orbiter in place and delivering the lander and rover to the surface of the Moon. That completes this week’s episode and this portion of Orbital News. I thank you for joining us for another episode of today in space. "body": "https://youtu.be/z9K3fr7oZ-o\n\nOn this week's episode, we go deep and cover some major Orbital news from Earth's space industry - catching you up on what's new in Space. \n\nLightsail2 now using propulsion thanks to Solar Pressure\n\nSpaceX had a successful CRS18 launch followed up by a docking of the Dragon spacecraft on ISS to resupply the 6 crew members onboard with supplies and experiments. \n\nFollow us @todayinspacepod on Instagram and Twitter for more space and science\n\nFollow us @ag3dprinting on Instagram and Twitter to learn about 3D printing!\n\nFacebook Page /TodayInSpacePodcast\n\ntodayinspace.net\n\nHope you have a great week, stay safe, and spread love and science!\nAlex G. Orphanos\n\nOrbital News:\nLightsail2 had a successful deployment July 23rd solar sail deployment - something the entire team at the Planetary Society should be proud of! Big shout out to SpaceX for having the Falcon Heavy created to send it into orbit. \n\nThis is the first time this has ever been done - that solar pressure powered a spacecraft. Testing on how well this technique can work is underway, but already it’s been shown that solar pressure raised the orbit of a cubesat without any additional power, thrusters, or mass used to do so\nThis will be a huge opportunity as a fuel source for cubesats. \nBut the big advantage is with larger spacecraft. \nThe other thing is fuel cost - fuel is expensive, both in how much it is worth, and how much weight it takes up. A solar sail provides a cost efficient way to travel space.\nSpaceX had a successful CRS18 launch on July 25th, 2019 followed up by a docking of the Dragon spacecraft on ISS to resupply the 6 crew members onboard with supplies and experiments. \nOne of the payloads on board is the precursor to 3D printing organs - . \nThis was first dragon capsule to launch on 3 missions - hat trick\nSpaceX broadcast was really next level - and NASA’s live broadcast for CRS-18 had some really great moments and they are trying difference formats! I remember seeing four different broadcasters who would share time leading up to launch sharing information about weather, the payloads, breaking down the launch profille, etc. \nPayloads on board the ISS now thanks to CRS-18 include a bio 3-D printer that will start 3-D printing cardiac tissue in orbit to see if zero gravity creates better conditions for the layers to bond while printing\nWhile a future where we can print a heart as it organ replacement in space is many years away at this point, this bio printer will allow for testing of techniques early on that will make it help advance the ability to actually print a fully functioning organ replacement. \nThe ISS is also sending up slime to the international space station for its continuing education efforts. They’ll show what slime acts like in orbit. If you haven’t seen their videos of water in orbit where they actually I think play ping-pong with a bottle of water. There’s a link in this weeks episode you can check it out. My favorite astronaut for this type of inspirational educational content has been Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.\nAnother major payload on board is the international docking adapter 3, or IDA-3. \nIDA-1 was lost on CRS-7 on June 28, 2015. But a few months later SpaceX launched the IDA – 2 on July of 2016 for CRS-9 and it was installed in August of the same year. And - the Demo 1 or DM-1 dragon capsule that launched in March of this year docked with the ISS on March 3rd using IDA-2. Now, the international space station has major upgrade capability for the future of human travel to low earth orbit.\nSpaceX also had a successful 20m hop of the Starship water tank, a link to that is in the episodes description and at todayinspace.net. \nElon said that as soon as next week we could see another, higher hop, and a SpaceX Starship update will come which should reveal some new developments. Elon musk stated that yes, an update was coming which would include a detailed review of the first orbital Starship, explaining the pros & cons of each design decision.\nWe’ll update you on that in the future after the event\nIndia’s launch to the moon was successful - and they are on the long, controlled, underpowered journey to the Moon. \n\nThat completes this week’s episode and this portion of Orbital News. | body | https://youtu.be/-WuF1OFYYj4 Hello Steemians! This past week I had the chance to visit Johnson Space Center while I was in Texas! I wanted to share my thoughts on my first time there, including some tips on what to see and where I stayed - I still want to go back and see more of it. It's a pretty interesting area, and I love Texas. It also made me think of my early influences for space and science - because I got to see a Space Shuttle up close and personal for the first time EVER! So much space nerding - and you can see my pictures and videos on our instagram page @ todayinspacepod There weren't many guides I found on what to see at JSC - but I did find this great guide if you find yourself in Houston! -spacetourismguide.com/visit-johnson-space-center/ We've got a lot of Orbital news to catch up on next week - a busy summer of space 2019! Spread Love - Spread Science! Alex G. Orphanos WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT APOLLO 50TH? I can’t recommend 'Chasing the Moon' enough! A great source in either format, video or written word, that captures not only the science, but the politics, and the story of the times.Especially the ones you didn’t hear before. It's available in many formats and lengths on Youtube for free, including on PBS online. You can also get the audiobook for free by starting an Audible trial by going to audibletrial.com/todayinspace and support the podcast! |

| body | https://youtu.be/axRK0gCd4UM Happy 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing! In this special edition of the podcast, I will be sharing my thoughts on the Apollo60th, and hope to cover it from an angle you haven't heard before. To start, we have a launch hangout using the audio from the Saturn V launch on July 16th, 1969 and we finish off with my thoughts on the influence of the Apollo 11 moon landing 50 years later. I also share my logic against the age old argument that "We shouldn't put money and resources into a space program when there are so many things we could use that money for down on Earth". I hope you enjoy! I'm off to the Houston Space Center next week! If you have any recommendations of what to see when I'm out there - please let me know! https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-48857752 https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/apollo/apollo11_audio.html https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:266725 |

| title | The Influence of the Rocket, Rocket Lab to Make it Rain, and the Artemis 2024 mission |
| body | https://youtu.be/sWmp6lOGp5c ABOUT THIS EPISODE: (from June 23rd) I have been doing some research into the history of the Space Race, reading up on some recommended books (listed below) and sharing his thoughts on the influence of the rocket on human history. With the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing coming up on July 20th, we'll be focusing on the comparisons between the Apollo Program and the newly announced Artemis Program to put the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024. Alex breaks down the general difference between the two programs and their link to Greek Mythology. Rocket Lab also has a launch next week of the Electron rocket for the mission #MakeItRain. Spread Love, Spread Science. http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-051319a-nasa-artemis-moon-program.html https://www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-to-partner-with-american-industry-to-supply-artemis-moon-missions EPISODE TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Today In Space, the all things space science podcast. For anyone new I am your host, Alex G. Orphanos, science communicator and engineer. My degree is in Aerospace Engineering, with a minor in Jazz Performance. While that may be a strange degree, it gets weirder. I started this podcast 5 years ago to talk about space, and I am not really an expert on a lot of sci-fi or space history. My space interests were in Star Trek, Star Wars, Dragonball Z - which had ALOT of space in it, and I loved rockets. So much so, that when I found out I could go to school to potentially work on the Space Shuttle I applied without even knowing what the industry was really like. Since I first started the podcast I thought this was a great opportunity, since I wasn’t already an expert nerd on everything space, that means I could learn about it for the first time ad share what I think here, letting us all, hopefully, learn in the process. I am not an expert on the Apollo Program, or the Space Race for that matter. I understand it as an engineer who’s expertise is a direct relation of the space program. I see the effect and understand the magnitude of the Space Race and learned some of the history throughout my degree. Koralev, Goddard, Johnson, Arthur C. Clark, Von Braun, the rocket equation. But with this anniversary coming up, I wanted to do some homework and share my thoughts as I learn about the history of the Space Race. I grabbed the audiobook ‘Chasing the Moon’ by Robert Stone and Alan Andre. I think we’re going to be do a few episodes on this leading up to the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. I have another book on the Space Race, all recommended by members of the Space Pants Squad on twitter. Thank you. I am currently obsessed with all of the human history events that were tangled up in the eventual race to the Moon. It’s funny, you hate history in school, or at least I did. I appreciated it, but I didn’t like the act of learning it. Now, I’m basically 30 and LOVE history. I found Dan Carlins podcast Hardcore History on my long drives to my job in CT from Boston. I learned about Gengis Khan, the Persian Empire, the Spartans, and Alexander the Great. And now my obsessive twitch is focused on the Space Race. Wow, what a crazy messed up shit show it was throughout the era of rocket development leading to and during the manned missions to the Moon. World War I, World War II, the Cold War, Vietnam, the Civil Rights Movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and everything else that we could be here for hours talking about how crazy the times were. All that time you had both people who were passionate about space travel and research and wanted to make it a reality working with those who were trying to use the technology as instruments of war. Each side was working together to develop the technology, while at the same time apparently many did not believe there was any use for rockets or that it was merely a psychological tool in war (which were the thoughts from Americans at the time about the V2 with the Nazi’s after war). Rockets were entangled politically after World War II and operation paper-clip, and while the rocket developed to bring more and more mass into orbit, it was carrying either communication satellites, human beings, or bombs It’s amazing to think about how the idea and practical use of a projectile could be juggled by the two major super powers at the time who represented two very different ideals. How the rocket was being leveraged by those wanting rockets to conduct science and help the world communicate ideas and others trying to use it to strike fear or help America (or Russia) fight a battle it must win. Both were in play, and somehow through it all we ended up in a time where we can have a space race currently underway where the stakes aren’t as high, but the progress happens nonetheless! Are we seeing that a war is not needed to get the space industry move forward? It’s truly an amazing time, and all due to the work that was put into achieving one of the most ludicrous things of all time. When the United States planned to go to the moon, the Russians, who were the leaders at the time, were only going into low earth orbit. Going to the moon, bringing combustible fuel to the moons surface and then launching from the moon back to the spacecraft, docking, and then returning to splash land after experiencing a hell-fire of heat reentering the atmosphere - that’s a lot harder than launching into an orbit and then returning for a splashdown. What I’m trying to say is that I am thoroughly enjoying this book. Pick it up if you’re interested in learning more about the influence of the rocket and the space race. You can get the audiobook from us for free with a free trial of audible by going to audibletrial.com/todayinspace. Now for some Orbital News First, let’s talk about the rocket company Rocket Lab, started by Peter Beck and based out of New Zealand. To quote from their mission statement: “There are endless possibilities for what we can achieve with better access to space, but until now it has been hard to get there. The satellites of today are getting smaller, doing more and costing less - and thousands of them need to get on orbit. Small satellites have been promised frequent, reliable and affordable dedicated launch for decades. Rocket Lab is delivering on this with a tailored, repsonsive launch service operating right now.” Rocket Lab is leveraging 3D printing for their rocket engines as a way to save on costs and create rocket engine designs that are not possible the way we traditionally make rockets. Next week, they have another launch, called #MakeItRain which will be the 7th launch of their Electron rocket, which will have 7 payloads on board. Their rocket engine, the Rutherford, will have it’s 70th launch into space Next, let’s discuss some details of the moon mission NASA has in store for 2024 where the first woman and next man are planned to return to the Moon. We will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20th. The 2024 return mission will be called Artemis. And if you know your Greek mythology, Artemis was Apollo’s twin sister. She was incredibly skilled as a huntress and rivaled Apollo in skill, especially in the bow. She hunted a lot with Orion and they were buddies. The Artemis mission sets out to accomplish what Apollo did - land humans on the surface of the moon and return them to Earth safely. But this time the mission architecture will be different, the setup is intended to be a prolonged presence around the Moon. The Space Launch System will launch the Orion Capsule that will travel to the Moon. The Apollo program launched two spacecraft to the moon for return to earth and travel to the moon. The Command Module and the LEM. The Artemis mission will only launch Orion every mission. In order to allow humans to travel from orbit to the moon, and back again - NASA will need to first construct the Gateway, which in the simplest of terms will be an International Space Station around the Moon. That way, we can send people to the Moon on a regular basis like we do with the ISS. It also allows the human crew more time to get prepared between traveling to the surface, or the travel to get to the station. It allows for more checks and planning than is possible as it was done in the Apollo program. We can also send rovers and landers and crew from the surface of the moon and back more frequently this way. Based on reports about the current Artemis plans in practicality are showing that NASA has pulled back on how much of the Gateway needs to be completed to accomplish the goal of the 2024 mission date. The Gateway has been a part of NASA’s long term goal for a while now, and while the latest Gateway proposal is much smaller than what they were recommending - I’m very happy to see flexibility on NASA’s part to pick priorities and strategize on making this deadline. 5 years is half the time that Apollo accomplished the task in. Can Artemis really pull this off? If the mission stays true to the name we may actually see the first woman and the next man on the surface of the Moon in 2024. Technology still needs to be developed and tested, and they received funding. I like what I am seeing from NASA strategically in the early stages of a pretty ambitious return to the Moon, for good. That does it for this episode of Today In Space - next episode I’ll share more of my thoughts on the space race from the book ‘Chasing the Moon’ by Robert Stone and Alan Andre. I’m burning through that audiobook in traffic because I need to escape from being trapped in a car going 20 mph on a highway where the speed limit is 50 mph. It’s gotten really bad here - its unbelievable. But, if you are dealing with city traffic, or need to make better use of that time commuting - get a free audiobook and trial by going to audibletrial.com/todayinspace. Don’t forget to check out ag3d-printing.com - you can learn about 3D printing, see our current projects like this last one where I had to repair my heated print bed for my Prusa i3 MK2 3D printer. I need that 3D printer to make parts of a certain high temperature material for it’s own upgrade. It’s the only 3D printer I have right now that can do it - 3D printer building another 3D printer. But I had to do some soldering first and test a 3D print to make sure everything worked. | title | Apollo50th coming up, SpaceX Starship Hover test, India to the Moon, former NASA Astronaut to lead Artemis |
| body | Hey there! Long time no post - looking to start with the Apollo11 50th anniversary coming up. Enjoy! This last week was packed full of space! I got to attend a public conversation at the Boston Public Library where Robert Stone and Alan Andres spoke about 'Chasing the Moon' and everything Apollo as the 50th is coming up this week July 16-20th. Lots of NASA centers to celebrate at, see links below for more. In Orbital News, we go over SpaceX's Starhopper test on Tuesday, LightSail2, Hayabusa2, India's Moon mission launch (day episode was released), and we cover the change at NASA for leadership of the Human Exploration and Operations division. Something that will definitely have an effect on the success of the Artemis mission in 2024. Hopefully this former astronaut returning from the private sector will bring the government back what it needs to accomplish the goal in 5 years. Have a great week! Don't forget to catch the live broadcast of the Apollo 11 mission on July 20th thanks to NASA!
