      "body": "Scott Harrison was born in New Jersey in 1975, and as far back as he can remember, he’s had a restless drive to get things done. This energetic nature may even have saved his life early on when his childhood home had a carbon monoxide leak that nearly killed his mom.\n\nSince he was always outside playing, and his father was at work, it was only his mom who suffered the effects of the scentless, airborne toxin – though it would take a year of recurring symptoms, such as dizziness, nausea and passing out, before the source of his mom’s troubles were identified. Yet, once the leak from the home’s heating system was found, Scott’s childhood only got more unusual.\n\nThe carbon monoxide leak caused the Harrisons to move, but no matter where they went, his mom would feel sick from the slightest scents. Strong smells like onions, hairspray and pipe smoke weren’t the only offenders – even someone’s makeup could be too much. Sometimes the family would drive out in the middle of the night to find a spot in the countryside where she could get some relief. One night, the smell of car exhaust from a nearby highway was too much, so they ended up sleeping on hay in a barn.\n\nAs a young boy, unusual excursions like this were actually quite fun for Scott, like camping out. But as he became a teenager, his mother’s illnesses became more of a burden for a kid who just wanted a normal adolescence.\n\nScott’s mom also became sensitive to any electromagnetic radiation in the air, so there was no TV or radio in the house, on top of there being no gas oven. Plus, a local doctor also diagnosed her as allergic to most foods.\n\nThen there was the issue of his schooling. Not long after Scott was born, the Harrisons became a very religious family, so Scott was enrolled in a small Christian school with five classrooms that held around nine students each. It was called the New Life Christian School, and Scott hated it so much he told his parents, in no uncertain terms, that he was going to go to public school instead.\n\nSo, in 1991, 16-year-old Scott suddenly found himself the new kid at a much bigger high school. Fortunately for him, he had one skill that helped him make friends: he knew how to play piano.",

Let’s take a closer look at some of the core values of creativity.\n\nA good place to start is by saying what you really think; being creative is about being brutally honest.\n\nThat’s essential in a creative field. Say you’re in marketing. You’re bound to come across clients who’ll ask you to promote really bad products.\n\nIf you’re only looking at the bottom line, you might well agree to the commission – plenty of agencies do exactly that all the time. After all, unhealthy, wasteful and uninteresting products can be great moneymakers.\n\nBut there’s a catch: that’s a huge waste of creative human resources.\n\nYou might not land the job if you’re brutally honest about what you think of your prospective client’s tacky ideas, but you will save yourself a lot of hassle in the long run.\n\nThe reward? You can get down to work on something more meaningful!\n\nHere are two other core values creatives should take to heart: love and respect.\n\nWhether you’re producing brands, products, art installations or movies, nothing will help you reach and move your audience like love and respect.\n\nHumans are hardwired to appreciate these values – the survival of our species depends on it! Because we’re not as sturdy as other animals and need others to help us now and then, we’re good at spotting these values when they emerge.\n\nSay you’re making an animated movie purely to cash in. Chances are it’ll be pretty generic. Put some love and respect into your work, on the other hand, and it’s much more likely that you’ll end up with something others will cherish.\n\nThink of pioneering creatives like Steve Jobs, the Rolling Stones or Steven Spielberg. They’re revered because the things they created are the result of deep love and respect.\n\nThat’s a great lead to follow. And there are few things more precious than something you’ve created – after all, it’s your baby!\n\nThat’s a natural mind-set, but it’s often unhelpful. Your best work is frequently the result of letting go.\n\nThis is especially true of ideas. Thinking creatively is all about new solutions, and to get there, you’ll need to throw out ideas that just don’t work.\n\nThink of it like a cupboard. If you want to free up space for new things, you also have to toss out some of your old belongings.\n\nTake it from the group of Japanese artists behind the 2016 hit “Xylophone in the Forest” ad for cell phone provider Docomo.\n\nIt’s an impressive spot. In it, a ball rolls down a 44-meter-long wooden xylophone suspended over a forested hillside. As it makes its way toward the instrument’s final key, the ball plays the notes of a famous Bach composition to create a beautiful soundtrack.\n\nBut that wasn’t the artists’ first idea. In fact, they argued for something much more complex. They were particularly taken by the idea of a Rube Goldberg-type machine – a device that completes a simple operation in the most complicated way possible.\n\nRather than having the ball travel straight down the xylophone, the artists imagined a complex path involving all sorts of twists and turns, levers and special effects.\n\nIt was a tantalizing idea, and the group invested considerable time into making it work. In the end, however, the project’s leader, Morihiro Harano, an advertising and media expert, overruled them. He was convinced a simpler version would be better.\n\nThe ad was a huge success in Japan and made a splash in the international press. It was a fitting reward for a tough decision: rejecting the artists’ original idea.\n\nGetting the creative juices flowing isn’t just about being bold, though – it’s also about setting yourself up for success. That means getting enough rest and relaxation.\n\nYour brain doesn’t just shut down when you sleep; in fact, it remains quite active. Sleep is when the brain gets down to the important work of organizing memories and weaving dreams. And those are potent sources of inspiration.\n\nBut because you’re not consciously processing these ideas, you can’t access them immediately. That’s why it’s so important to set time aside for relaxing and goofing around. Those are the moments when you’ll have that flash of inspiration.\n\nTake it from best-selling author Jonah Lehrer. Like lots of creatives, he says his best insights come when least expected – like when he’s relaxing in the bathtub or playing Ping-Pong.",

Lots of information doesn’t make you more creative – in fact, it might end up making you less creative!\n\nWhy? Well, the more you know about something, the more limits there are to how you think about it.\n\nConsider the taxi industry.\n\nTaxi companies have long pondered how to renew their industry. But the most innovative shake-up came from outside the sector. It was Uber, a new company intent on opening up the taxi market to car owners and commuters, that really pushed the envelope.\n\nThat’s partly because Uber’s ideas were fresh. Its strategies weren’t limited by tried and tested ideas about how to run a taxi business, which freed them up to think creatively. The result? A brand new service.\n\nThe second path to creativity is to find someone to bounce your ideas off.\n\nThink of it this way: whatever it is that you’re planning, two people will always have more ideas than one. And that means it’s important to think carefully about who you’d like to work with.\n\nSay you need a video for your new website. If you know a brilliant video artist, start a collaboration! Once you’ve figured out who can help you achieve success, give them a call and start convincing them to join you.\n\nThere are exceptions, of course, but they’re generally rare. In most cases, you’ll find that you’re much more creative when you’re working together with others. This is called the sandbox model of creativity.\n\nThink of children interacting in a sandbox.\n\nInnovations come thick and fast. If one toddler starts burrowing into one side of a mound of sand, one of his playmates is likely to start digging from the other side. Furthermore, we believe that wealthy parents or exceptional intelligence is necessary to run a large company. However, the ghSMART project, which the authors were involved in, surveyed over 2,600 CEOs and what they found contradicts these beliefs.\n\nThe majority of CEOs are just regular people who have developed leadership qualities over the course of their career.\n\nMore than 70 percent of the CEOs surveyed claimed that they had no intention of becoming a CEO when they first started working.\n\nLet’s take Don Slager, for example. At the time of writing, Slager is the CEO of Republic Services, a $9 billion company and one of the top-500 wealthiest companies in the United States as rated by Fortune magazine. He never went to college but was ranked the number one CEO in the United States by the website Glassdoor. In fact, he started out as a garbageman for the company. By working his way up the ranks, Slager eventually became the head of one of the most well-known companies in the American waste-services industry. It was his knowledge of and familiarity with the general public, as well as the insights he’d gained from working in all areas of the company, that made Slager the best candidate for CEO.\n\nWhat’s more, the survey showed that you don’t need to be a genius to become a CEO.\n\nIndeed, those who put forth complicated ideas or use long words are typically viewed as bad CEOs. Moreover, they’re less likely to be hired at all. To give you some stats – only seven percent of CEOs graduated from an Ivy League school. Though Fortune 500 companies usually have Ivy League graduates among their leaders, the smaller, less-known firms don’t. But Ivy League schools aside, consider this: like Don Slager, eight percent of CEOs have never attended any college, so, clearly, lacking a formal higher-level education is no hindrance.\n\nYou also don’t need to be an exceptionally outspoken person to be a CEO. Egoistic people make the worst CEOs since they’re too focused on their individual success. And, in fact, 30 percent of CEOs are introverts.",

The tragedy was not the first of its kind, nor was it the last, but, for many students, it represented a tipping point. Enough was enough.\n\nFor 14-year-old Lauren Hogg, the day started out feeling special. Students exchanged Valentine’s Day cards; a sense of celebration hung in the air. So when the fire alarm went off during her last class of the day, she, like many other students, wondered whether it wasn’t just another holiday prank. After all, they’d already had a fire drill that morning.\n\nIn fact, they had been told by teachers to expect a shooting drill at some point soon, complete with actors and the firing of blanks. So when they saw students running across campus, some still felt there wasn’t anything to worry about. Drills for what to do in the event of a school shooting had become routine.\n\nBut Lauren was scared, and when she heard teachers shouting, “Code red!” she grabbed her friends, ran back to their classroom and hid in the back room. They waited there for three hours, terrified and unsure of what was happening. Now and then, they’d get a hasty, fragmented text from a friend.\n\nEventually, they were found and pulled out by the police, who sent them outside to the parking lot. Many parents were waiting there, and Lauren managed to find her dad. They went home, but everything suddenly sank in when they turned on the TV and she saw the faces of the students, her friends, who’d been pronounced missing.\n\nThat was when her 17-year-old brother, David, decided he needed to go back to the school and tell reporters what had happened. He explained to the media that something needed to be done to protect schoolchildren, and, over the next few days, he banded together with other students to try and do something themselves.\n\nThese kids were all born after the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. Each was familiar with red-code drills. Each had grown up in fear of just such an event. They were ready for change.",

Since the Columbine massacre in 1999, there have been 47 similar shootings across the country, resulting in many fatalities.\n\nAnd, infuriatingly, each new shooting triggers the same cycle: an outpouring of grief, a brief debate over gun control and then protestations that it’s not right to politicize a tragedy. Soon enough, the matter drops out of the public eye, though nothing has changed. Everything remains as it was, setting the stage for the next shooting.\n\nThis pattern changed after the Parkland, Florida, attack in February 2018. Student survivors felt that it was high time they took matters into their own hands. So they started their own campaign on social media to raise awareness about the issue and stand up to those who tried to discredit them.\n\nThese blinks detail how the attack affected siblings David and Lauren Hogg, and how their experiences – from being exposed early on to the realities of guns and gun violence to debating gun-control issues in high school – led to their involvement in the March for Our Lives movement.\n\nYou’ll also learn\n\nhow an aggressive lifeguard taught David the power of media;\nhow school students took on the NRA; and\nthe ten demands that they still want addressed.",
