bodyI generally drink well over 8 glasses of water, as I do not consume beverages with sweeteners (including artificial ones). There is a danger, though, in drinking too much water and you should be very wary. I do feel a health benefit in feeling more energy and I do not tire as easily. Not to mention, my complexion is generally better.

title"First Man" Review
bodySpace movies have piqued our interest for years. But there is nothing like the real story. Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, we all knew that. He was a private man, and as we reached for the stars, very little was known about the private life of the commander of Apollo 11. "First Man" takes us through the Gemini and Apollo era, and tells us in the first minutes of the heartbreak that shaped Armstrong's life. Much as "The Right Stuff" did decades ago, it takes us through the private tragedies of the astronauts who lived, and died, to explore new frontiers. And it brings us a front seat view into the heartache of the families who lost love ones to the grand adventure. Ryan Gosling plays Armstrong convincingly, and Claire Foy gives a convincing performance as Armstrong's longsuffering wife, Janet, who watches as the space program progresses. The movie walks us through the highs and lows of the space program, intelligently exposing us to the political climate that surrounded the launch. "First Man" is a compelling chapter in US space history, and largely passes the truth meter. There is speculation at the end regarding Armstrong's ten minutes away from Aldrin on the moon, but even Armstrong's son believes the speculation rings very plausible.

body“It's not for you”, the preacher said, To the hungry child he longed to be fed, As he stood in front of the pantry door, Full of food and drink and so much more, “This is for OUR people, you see, The ones who fuel our endless greed, Some things in life are always true, And this food was never meant for you” “It's not for you”, said the man in the uniform, To the refugee, weak and worn “We built this country from the ground up, To be here for people just like us, So grow our crops and harvest our food, Clean our gutters and hotel rooms, But some things in life are always true, And this land was never meant for you” “It's not for you”, said the man at the country club, To the lonely beggar seeking grub, “It's true that we have miles and miles of food, And I'll tell you it's all mighty good But this food comes with an entry fee This land was made not for you, but me, And some things in life are always true, That all of this was not made for you” “It's not for you”, said the man at the voting booth To the one who came to vote his truth, “We would not want those who lead us through, To be voted on by folks like you So we obstruct, we tax, we gerrymand, To control the vote throughout the land And understand that this is true, That voting rights are not for you” “It's not for you”, was the bureaucrat's rule At the entrance to the charter school, “You'll spend your life digging a ditch, While we build a better life for the rich, And you'll often wonder what you could do, If education were your birthright, too, You'll learn some things in life are true, The keys to knowledge are not for you”. For broken people across the land, Doors are closed by an invisible hand, And everytime we try to cross through, A voice will say “it's not for you” It's time to tell every political hack, That we have come to take it back, And one day maybe the tale will ring true That they will no more say, “It's not for you”.

titleHow Will Proposed SNAP Rule Changes Affect Working Families?
body![homeless-john.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWrKoQTpnSLjDJaQR2AewJS2dhZPs58YErnWwEUZF2JL8/homeless-john.jpg) (Stock photo: "Homeless John") Earlier this week, President Trump is proposing to replace a portion of SNAP benefits with a meal delivery service that would deliver food and produce to needy families to replace half of their financial benefits. (source: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-budget-swaps-food-stamps-for-packages-of-cereals-milk/ar-BBJ2HAf?OCID=ansmsnnews11) At first glance, this would appear to be a practical solution. After all, both parties see a need for improved nutrition in government delivered services, and delivering food rather than funds would seem to be a practical solution. It could be a reboot of the once widely available USDA commodities program (although the program was supplemental, and not a replacement for food stamp benefits). But it could have further reaching implications than we realize. In 2017, the program served 42.2 million people and over 20 million households (see above source). Most of that money was spent at local retailers, which provide jobs and income for the community. While there are practical sides to this Trump plan, it could have the unintended consequence of expanding food deserts as retailers in impoverished areas close their doors because of declining revenues from SNAP customers. And as this program seeks to expand work requirements, more families could find themselves unemployed as these retailers cut jobs and hours for their employees. A better plan would be to expand the commodities program without cutting SNAP. Yes, it would come at a cost; everything does. But ultimately we are going to have to decide whether our priorities lie in waging wars and building walls, or in building infrastructure that includes human infrastructure, and ensuring access to nutrition for all of our citizens. We have the money, we just have misguided priorities.

titleConversation With a Fascist
bodyRight now in current events, there is a good deal of questioning about the views of our top leaders. Specifically, there are charges of fascism, denied by his supporters but upheld by his opponents. Some years ago, as a participant in an online community, I encountered a self professed fascist. While his words have been erased from the online bank since, and I do not have the time nor resources to hunt them down, I remember the essentials of what he said. And his definition of fascism, quite frankly, fits the current leadership far more than they'd like to admit. I can't remember all of the points perfectly, but will try to hit the high points as best I can. Probably one of the most salient points that he made was that fascists were concerned with absolute control of the government's resources, and that certain social issues were actually allowable under fascism because they did not disturb the order within the community. Specifically, he mentioned marriage equality and polygamy as being social issues that a fascist leader would not oppose, as creating the illusion of freedom would encourage more complacency within the society. Strong borders, immigration control, control of commerce. All of those things fell within the interests of a fascist government, as well as seizing the means of production (under the control of government, not the workers...although in the wrong hands, a socialist/communist society CAN become a fascist one as well). Increasing efficiency of the society's resources under the direction of the government was a driving interest, and maintaining a strong military was part of that. All of this makes me wonder if we haven't well and truly been duped. Yes, as I stated earlier, I believe our current federal leadership is a fascist government. But looking through a (somewhat) objective lens, I cannot help but view past administrations as a sort of "fascism lite", which led to the buildup of what we see today. ![fascism.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdT4TC78GwJLomkNQWXAkKJHDCBMERhn9UrwdURGDUphP/fascism.png)

titleOPINION: Balancing Homeschool Rights with Public Interest
bodyWe've all seen the reports by now. The Turpins, a California homeschool family, were discovered to be raising their children in deplorable conditions. In the aftermath, the California legislature is trying to determine this is typical, and require annual home evaluations for homeschoolers. As a homeschooling parent, I have seen good and bad elements of homeschooling. I am concerned, not at the idea of regulation, but about the essential elements of it. In the first place, most public school educators are fundamentally opposed to homeschooling. It is not right, or helpful, to place oversight of any activity under the authority of someone who opposes that activity. You wouldn't put Planned Parenthood under the control of the Southern Baptist Convention, it is probably not the best idea to put homeschooling under the control of public school educators, who are taught primarily fierce criticisms of homeschooling. I've seen the extremes of those who oppose any oversight whatsoever. They worry me, frankly. But I'm also realistic; if you put the hammer down too heavy, they will most assuredly drop off the grid. More unregistered births will take place. Families will move to areas where they are less likely to attract government attention. And this will create some disturbing pockets of fractured opposition within the country. There are better ways to go about this, frankly. As a parent who homeschools for different reasons than many, I would like to see more private/public school cooperation. My tax dollars pay for curriculum as well. Why can we not purchase curriculum through the school district and receive tax credit for those specifically authorized purchases? Why can we not access certain classes that we choose through ITV, or even, in the case of labs, take our students to the campus to participate? Questions like these bear asking. And as an aside, some districts in some states do this. It would, in my opinion, serve the public interests better to study the successes (AND failures) of these model and use those for more widespread implementation. I'm not the norm, and I know I am not the norm, but I don't see the government as the enemy. But neither do I see them as the exclusive answer. I've seen overreach of government that are, frankly appalling. But I have also seen times when the government provided help and hope to families that have none. Another concern I have is gentrification. I have lived among families who open their canned food from the bottom of the can so that they can rinse the cans and restack them, empty in the cupboard...all because visits from well meaning government officials with a poor understanding of the mechanics of poverty have led the empty cupboards to be seen as signs of neglectful parenting. I have seen families who struggle to furnish their homes and are fearful that the wrong person will not see those homes as "good enough". These families also deserve access to the opportunity to educate their children at home. While programs like the school lunch program provide nutrition to their children, there is no reason that in a cooperative program, those could not be expanded to those who bring their children to the campus for a class or two per day. And such cooperative education would provide greater oversight as well as much needed socialization opportunities without unduly infringing on a family's Constitutional rights. There would be opposition, certainly. At least at first. And it would come from both sides. But if we allow the development of these sorts of programs to foster greater cooperation with the understanding that we are trying to expand and develop more flexible educational opportunities for all, and if we place oversight under the auspices of someone who genuinely believes in the advantages of homeschooling, we can create something better without the feeling that we are being thrust into a frightening dystopia. Let's be proactive instead of reactive. The Turpins are most definitely outliers, and policy made based on the actions of someone who is not typical of a demographic is generally bad policy. ![turpin-family-3.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSyGG18RMezdMsN3JWBZoS8Jxd5kMYJGu4Cz1X36m4ZJB/turpin-family-3.jpg)

They worry me, frankly. But I'm also realistic; if you put the hammer down too heavy, they will most assuredly drop off the grid. More unregistered births will take place. Families will move to areas where they are less likely to attract government attention. And this will create some disturbing pockets of fractured opposition within the country.\n\nThere are better ways to go about this, frankly. It would, in my opinion, serve the public interests better to study the successes (AND failures) of these model and use those for more widespread implementation.\n\nI'm not the norm, and I know I am not the norm, but I don't see the government as the enemy. But neither do I see them as the exclusive answer. I've seen overreach of government that are, frankly appalling. But I have also seen times when the government provided help and hope to families that have none.\n\nAnother concern I have is gentrification. I have lived among families who open their canned food from the bottom of the can so that they can rinse the cans and restack them, empty in the cupboard...all because visits from well meaning government officials with a poor understanding of the mechanics of poverty have led the empty cupboards to be seen as signs of neglectful parenting. I have seen families who struggle to furnish their homes and are fearful that the wrong person will not see those homes as \"good enough\". These families also deserve access to the opportunity to educate their children at home. While programs like the school lunch program provide nutrition to their children, there is no reason that in a cooperative program, those could not be expanded to those who bring their children to the campus for a class or two per day. And such cooperative education would provide greater oversight as well as much needed socialization opportunities without unduly infringing on a family's Constitutional rights.\n\nThere would be opposition, certainly. At least at first. And it would come from both sides. But if we allow the development of these sorts of programs to foster greater cooperation with the understanding that we are trying to expand and develop more flexible educational opportunities for all, and if we place oversight under the auspices of someone who genuinely believes in the advantages of homeschooling, we can create something better without the feeling that we are being thrust into a frightening dystopia.\n\nLet's be proactive instead of reactive. The Turpins are most definitely outliers, and policy made based on the actions of someone who is not typical of a demographic is generally bad policy.\n\n\n ![turpin-family-3.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSyGG18RMezdMsN3JWBZoS8Jxd5kMYJGu4Cz1X36m4ZJB/turpin-family-3.jpg)",

titleCryptocurrency: Ponzicoin shuts down
bodyCaveat emptor. This is especially true in the Internet era. Anyone over 40 has stories of the "dotcom" days, when startups with great ideas but no financial backing behind them were being bought up at hyperinflated prices that crashed hard when folks realized they were buying junk. And we've all heard about pyramid schemes, Ponzi schemes, etc. So when an ethereum based cryptocurrency called "ponzicoin" launches, and PROMISES you that you will lose money, why would you buy? Yet that is exactly what Rishab Hedge did, netting 250 Ether (about $25,000 USD) before shutting down the site because things had gotten "crazy out of hand". OK, so you're shaking your head, wondering how people could fall for that. But it gets worse: in 2014, a developer did the EXACT SAME THING, netting approximately $2.2 million before he took the money and ran. It's easy to laugh at these things, but the truth is, it can quickly undermine confidence in serious cryptocurrencies. So, if you are investing in cryptocurrency, please, do your due diligence and research the offerings. And for goodness sake, if someone launches a product calles "ponzicoin" again, PLEASE don't take the bait! (source: http://www.techweez.com/2018/01/26/ponzicoin-crypto-scheme/)

But a few generations ago, it was much more than that. As the words of Woody Guthrie, written above, chronicle, the slogan was used by a Hitler backed isolationist initiative to keep the USA out of the war until Hitler's plans could be more fully developed. "Lindy" was one of the most popular people around the world at the time, and the idea was that he could be instrumental in the rise of the Third Reich. Prior to that, its use as a slogan among the KKK was well established, as seen in the linked parade photo from the 1920's (source: https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/ku-klux-klan-stages-an-america-first-parade-in-binghamton-news-photo/514702614#binghamton-ny-ku-klux-klan-stages-an-america-first-parade-in-ny-picture-id514702614). While it is, of course, not necessarily true that the current administration harbors such feelings, it is nonetheless true that a close examination of history reveals a less than wholesome usage of the phrase.

titleIs the Song "This Land Is Your Land" Offensive to Native Culture?
bodyRecently, a friend of mine solicited a performer to play, among other things, the Woody Guthrie standard "This Land Is Your Land". As things will go, though, he had one reply that complained the song was a slap in the face to indigenous peoples. While I don't think we should always go crazy about these things, I did feel that it would be productive to take a look at it. First of all, the complaint is not new; in 1968, Lakota Sioux chief Henry Crow Dog discussed the colonial overtones with Pete Seeger, and had a new verse commissioned with the words "this land was stole by you from me" (source: https://www.ft.com/content/5a04db16-0009-11e6-99cb-83242733f755). Yet there is nothing in Woody's piece that would infer in any way that the "you" was anything but inclusive. Woody's upbringing in Okemah, Oklahoma was in Creek Nation, and very close to Seminole Nation. He was well aware of the plight of the Native Americans, and in fact, more than likely grew up around grandchildren and great grandchildren of those who had suffered on the Trail of Tears. Yet sometimes a song is more about what is not said. I can understand how those words could be offensive to the ears of those who have lived lives of nothing more than broken treaty after broken treaty. While certainly not the intent of Guthrie, it is a textbook example of how implicit bias can affect one's writing. Bottom line: a word can mean different things to different people. While the song is an important one in the American songbook, it may be wise to understand it is not all inclusive and be sensitive of the setting. ![Dyess.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmc8qXuvWUjgcmJN4JJHc3pZf8GPi2ZNny2pR2NB7Eh6A7/Dyess.jpg)

titleThe Tide Pod Challenge
bodyIt's funny what will trigger you, really: The Tide Pod challenge has set me thinking of my childhood. One of my mother's pet punishments was to wash our mouths out with soap. A common, but in retrospect, cruel and potentially dangerous punishment. We didn't get just a swab, we had the whole bar, twisted around in our mouths until we could taste nothing for hours. At one point, we had even made a joke of rating the soaps by flavor. Lava soap, I believe, was the worst. Well, this being the norm of our existence, as living in the projects at the time exposed us to many colorful words. So, soap was on the menu probably more often than ramen noodles. One day, though, soaps started showing up with bite marks in them. Not just nibbles; whole hunks of the soap torn away by teeth. After a little bit of sleuthing, we traced it to Kevin, the youngest of our nuclear group (mother had one more, father had three more, but he was the youngest with a shared mother and father). At the time we thought it was because he had genuinely come to enjoy soap. As I have gotten older, though, I'm pretty much determined it was an act of defiance, a statement to our mother and stepfather at the time that they would never break him. And it was punk as all get out. And he would have only been about 8 at the time. That wasn't the last bitten bar of soap we would find, though. Though it didn't end the punishment, it did give us kids a source of levity about the whole thing. ![wiggums.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmY9A3bRyqdVgr6vjrNoEiPhZKhWLDwikYuVFVpLaToqTP/wiggums.jpg)

titleThe Single Step Project to End Homelessness Week 3 Update
bodyToday marks 3 weeks in on the Single Step project. I have logged 93.21 miles over 19 workouts, on my way to 1000 miles by October 1. If you haven't been following on, all money raised will go to Amarillo Housing First, a community based organization focused on placing the homeless in permanent housing. You can pledge a flat rate, or you can pledge by mile, whichever works for you. And I have chosen rallyup.com as the fundraising platform, because they are geared towards this event, and will not collect until I have met my goal. Just a penny per mile could make a difference, and that would be a $10 pledge. The fundraising link can be found on the SSP site: https://www.facebook.com/The-Single-Step-Project-to-End-Homelessness-736451889744104/ You can find out more about Amarillo Housing First here: https://www.facebook.com/AmarilloHousingFirst/ ![SSP.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaSMhUaS2pEu64NnaS3AZSxhxb1qGVoFMR4wDsQS79nX8/SSP.JPG)
