| title | My First Crush |
| body | Growing up,my mother made sure I was part of every children or teenage group in church. I was so dedicated the adult choir at St. Peter's Christ Army Church Ndoki allowed me to sing with them long before aunt flow's monthly visits. The church was my life though I did not understand why I felt compelled to attend. My life in church trumped frolicking with waterside boys making me completely awkward around the opposite sex. My mom didn't help when she said to me long before aunt flow ' if man touch you, you go get belle'. At the Tekewari(prayer house ) we wore white garments without shoes during service days. We rubbed sea mud, drank holy water from the holy well and fasted for seven days during the annual special 'Bethsaida' week. Bethsaida was the climax of our church year as there was usually a big celebration with free jollof rice and salad on the seventh day. Bethsaida was also the only time in the year my mother bought Ovaltine, cornbeef, cabin biscuit, and peak milk in preparation for the fast. Imagine my excitement! Ngwanu imagine! The seven days fast was usually interesting with a dramatic entrance of the Prophetess in a long flowing white garment overwhelmed with spirits. The air was always thick with expectations as we waited to see who the spirits chose to reveal mysteries to. I always prayed they'd pick me but that prayer remained unanswered till I left for CSS Kalio-Ama. The revelations were usually followed by ferocious prayers with sporadic mention of Angel Micheal. Curious times! It was during one of those Bethsaida programs that I first saw Diki and felt my heart stop for a second. I kid not! It did GBIM then stopped! Strange feeling it was. I was so shook I ran to the waterside, sped through the bridge to the toilet to check if I could still breathe, away from the prying eyes of the all knowing spirit filled women we believed possessed the ability to read thoughts. His mother was the chaperon of the children in church though she hardly brought hers to our small waterside community. I often wondered why she came such a distance for church. I digress. I do not know why she brought her kids that year but she did. Ah! Such cuteness! I felt instantly intimidated by them when we gathered to rehearse our song and attempted to shield my inferiority complex with a weird accent that sounded like an old ogoni man was trapped in my throat as I tried to impress my crush. I must have sounded really stupid because he laughed and left me standing with the other kids gawking at his little sister's pretty delicate white dress. I don't think I slept that night or many nights after. His laugh tortured me. I cried in secret away from my mother before she'd give me a reason to cry for real with her backhand slap. I looked out for him the next day with a broken heart wishing only to stare lest I spoil my chance with another round of broken pidgin mixed with Kalabari and a foreign ogoni accent but his father came for them that day leaving witnesses in his wake to relay the news of his son's departure from my life. My heart felt like someone had used a sledgehammer to wreck it. I don't know how I survived. I swear, I thought I would die. At his Father's funeral maybe a year or 2 later, I watched him as he drew uneven lines on the floor looking really sad, struggling not to cry, already bearing the burden of being an only son trying not to disappoint the adults that must have told him 'you have to be a man now'. I wanted to go sit with him and pretend to enjoy the silence while my heart somersaulted a mllion times but I was too lily-livered. I saw him again many years after at the University, he did not remember me and I didn't lose sleep thinking about him not remembering me. Strange how time removed the gbim in chwest. Life happened to me way too early! |

"body": "\n\nGrowing up,my mother made sure I was part of every children or teenage group in church.\n\nI was so dedicated the adult choir at St. Peter's Christ Army Church Ndoki allowed me to sing with them long before aunt flow's monthly visits.\n\nThe church was my life though I did not understand why I felt compelled to attend. My life in church trumped frolicking with waterside boys making me completely awkward around the opposite sex. My mom didn't help when she said to me long before aunt flow ' if man touch you, you go get belle'. \n\nAt the Tekewari(prayer house ) we wore white garments without shoes during service days. Ngwanu imagine!\n\nThe seven days fast was usually interesting with a dramatic entrance of the Prophetess in a long flowing white garment overwhelmed with spirits. Curious times!\n\nIt was during one of those Bethsaida programs that I first saw Diki and felt my heart stop for a second. I kid not! It did GBIM then stopped! Strange feeling it was. I was so shook I ran to the waterside, sped through the bridge to the toilet to check if I could still breathe, away from the prying eyes of the all knowing spirit filled women we believed possessed the ability to read thoughts. \n\nHis mother was the chaperon of the children in church though she hardly brought hers to our small waterside community. I often wondered why she came such a distance for church. I digress.\n\nI do not know why she brought her kids that year but she did. \n\nHis laugh tortured me. I cried in secret away from my mother before she'd give me a reason to cry for real with her backhand slap.\n\nI looked out for him the next day with a broken heart wishing only to stare lest I spoil my chance with another round of broken pidgin mixed with Kalabari and a foreign ogoni accent but his father came for them that day leaving witnesses in his wake to relay the news of his son's departure from my life. | title | DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH-A True Story |
| body | I was born into a hard working but poor and illiterate family in the 80's. My Papa was a security guard and my Mama was a petty trader. I have worked in a Nigerian bank for over 10 years without love for the career. Looking to Steemit to change that. I am married to a great guy whom people without any clue in life have told to dump me for a less complicated wife but he lets his love for me overshadow their hate. He is the light on my dark part, the strength that carries me when my frail emotions make me disengage from life. He is proof that I have a guardian Angel. A little peak into my early life ; I grew up with a mother that was emotionally unavailable and a father who loved me dearly but died before my 14th birthday in a ghastly car accident. No, he wasn't driving. He was homeless, frustrated with life and probably didn't see the car as he crossed the road. The only sibling I had drowned on the 20th of November, 1999 on his way to our village for a friend's father burial along with any hope of me feeling loved by a blood relative. Mama and I searched for his body for weeks along the Abonnema River banks with no luck except for one foot of his canvas we found near the death site and the confirmation of some waterside boys that he was on the boat, I have no proof of his death. I still dream of the day he'll return and tell me a fisherman saved him. .jpg) A few years before my father's death, he forced me to go live with one of his daughters whom we believed to be wealthy. At the time, we were living in the market in my mother's Garri (a Nigerian staple food made from cassava) stall and he thought it was unsafe for me with hoodlums constantly around. My brother, my only egbewager (defender) remained with them in the market while I moved to a seemingly better life. I didn't really know my half sisters and brothers but I loved them and wanted desperately for them to love me back but i got unexplained hate in return. Most of them were adults by the time I was born but that didn't stop me from wanting to be in their lives. I never understood why my mother called me oboribo(fool) whenever I tied my little brother to my back and walked miles to go visit them. My half sister was married to a foreigner and they lived on a university campus with their kids. The day I arrived with my cloths in a polythene bag, she looked at me with concealed disgust as she asked Papa “ hope she can do house chores” in our native tongue. As Papa replied, I tugged his trouser, pleading with my eyes for him to take me back. He looked away for a second (I think to control his emotions) before he said “ you are my hope, you will be safe here”. She beckoned on one of the four maids to show me to their room in the boys-quarters where I was to store my bag and sleep. My ordeal did not begin until the next day. I woke up with the other maids at 4 am, bathed and moved to the main house for my chores. At first I was clueless, I had never seen people living in more than one room so it was a little overwhelming to keep track of all the places to scrub until she assigned specific areas in the house to me. Everyday was the same. Clean the dining area and kitchen, set the table, prepare breakfast for the kids. Leave for school without eating unless there is leftover beans and rice dog food or the children's left over breakfast. On Saturdays, we cleaned and scrubbed till noon before Adaobi or Love walked to the back gate of the university to buy bread I usually dunked in my water and sugar 'tea' or beverages collected from different mugs after I cleared the table. Sometimes, I would save the oil from the bacon and sausages I fried for them as a dip for my bread. Life was good but I missed papa and Dike(little brother) a lot. He stopped coming to visit less maybe because he got tired of sitting outside under the mango tree as he wasn't really allowed into the house. After school, I did the homework for her younger kids including the one I was older than with 1 year. If I complained that I was tired, she'd say ''I give you 3 meals, did you have that with your mother''? But she lied because it was 2 meals most of the time. One time when the weather was really hot and the water from the tap became uncomfortable to drink, I filled a bottle and kept in the old fridge she barely used. When she saw me drinking chilled water a few hours later she cursed and asked if my mother could afford a fridge, warning me never to use her fridge. I did as I was told. Tried not make any trouble. Made myself invincible and hide in the stories I read from borrowed books and the pacesetters I snuck out from her bookshelf. The stories became my life. I couldn't trust anyone. I lived in fear of being driven away as I was constantly reminded of my good fortune. Couldn't love my nieces and nephews because they were sometimes the source of my pain. They would tell their mum if I left the corner by the corridor where I stood to watch TV and ventured into the sitting room or threatened to . Sometimes they would let me sit on the floor to watch TV and colour fancy drawing books with them. I cherished those brief moments of inclusion and happiness;envy of the other maids for a day or two. .jpg) When I summoned the courage to kneel and beg for 3 thousand Naira (less than 8 dollars) to register for WAEC she said there was no money and immediately offered to pay for hairdressing apprenticeship as if she'd pay for that with cowries. The day she locked me out of her house and allowed me to sleep by the garage because I came home late from school choir rehearsals remains fresh, even the joy of winning that year's shell choir competition has not erased the memory as that day started me on a journey to finding myself at age 15. A journey too thick with intrigue to tell in one post. Now I take my time to make friends, defend myself when i sense BS coming at me and is unapologetic to the people who call me a snob. I am still learning to be a better human being. .jpg) To the young woman thinking "I will never amount to anything because I do not have a silver spoon welded into my mouth'' don't despair! I turned out really well, a little fucked up and crazy but well by many standards. |

| title | DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH-A True Story |
| body | I was born into a hard working but poor and illiterate family in the 80's. |
