It’s really important to leave the Aphids alone when they get on your plants. Why you ask? It’s best to just leave them alone because , well, think of it this way, when you wipe/squish them, or spray them off, or use soapy water to kill them, your not inviting Ladybugs, hover flies, Chalcid wasps, and lacewings to the buffet. Their larvae eat the aphids, and the adult ladybug also eats them. \nAlso, if you're spraying with soapy water, you cannot rinse the plant off enough to rid the soap residue. Then, when the caterpillars eat the leaves, it makes them sick & die. Did you notice the huge puffy brown one near by. That one is already full of Chalcid wasps larvae. Good food for her babies.\nThese wasp are tiny! Like half the size of mosquitoes. But they are VERY effective at their job. They help keep other pest in check. Eleven (11) days ago, Lux-Mil formed his chrysalis. So he is pretty much right on time.\nOn average, it take 7-14 days for a butterfly to eclose from it's chrysalis. Yes, you read that right. That is not a typo. Fifteen eggs were laid, and all have hatched & are healthy. These little guys are quite gregarious. The first 3 instars they eat together as a big family. But once they are bigger, they separate and it's survival of the fittest. You have to make sure there is plenty of food available for them. Pipevine caterpillars are heavy eaters, and if there are to many caterpillars together, or not enough food, they are cannibalistic. It has been quite the journey this little one has taken us on. Lux-Mil ended up being completely camera shy. Hopefully that doesn't happen once it's emerging. I really hope to get to share that happening with you. But for now, we wait\n Lux-Mil started eating tons, and before I knew it, the silk button was laid and the J formation took place. This \"button\" is made of silk from the caterpillars spinneret. It then grabs on with the last set of prolegs and hangs there looking like the letter J. Hence the term \"J-ing\". While in the J, transformation is already beginning to happen. The 3 pairs of legs on the caterpillar's thoracic segments are the true legs. It will retain its true legs into adulthood. A caterpillar may have up to 5 pairs of prolegs on its abdominal segments, usually including a terminal pair on its hind end. This Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor), has laid the second set of eggs for the 2018 season today. 3/10/18 and we have a clutch count of 15 eggs. And just like the caterpillar, the eggs have spikes and nubs too! That is pretty neat!These were laid on Texas Native Aristolochia tomentosa (Woolly pipevine). It gets its name from the fuzz on the plant, and its flowers look like a smoking pipe.\n![IMG_0402.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmWX95czTqjtnpmfpfNCkqz8FzYWrfmfbx4NpBKben8fkC/IMG_0402.jpg)\nAs with all butterflies, native plants are important. But for the Pipevine Swallowtail, if a native is not used, it is deadly! Understanding & knowing Scientific names of plants is important for this very reason. If you don't use a native, once the eggs hatch & the caterpillars start to eat, they will die. This is because they aren't use to the toxic levels found in many exotic Aristolochia's.\nTexas Native Aristolochia are:\nSwan Flower (Aristolochia erecta)\nTexas Snakeroot (Aristolochia serpentaria)\nTexas Pipevine (Aristolochia coryi)\nWoolly Pipevine (Aristolochia tomentosa)\nAristilochia reticulata\nAristilochia wrightii\nAristilochia watsonii\n\nOther US Natives are:\nAristolochia californica\nAristolochia durior\nAristolochia macrophylla\nAristolochia trilobata\n\nNon-native safe plants:\nAristochia fimbriata\naristolochia clematitis\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/xvD2PBa53Kg",

This is one of the ways I can tell when they are going to shed.  I have come to the conclusion that, Lux-Mil is camera shy. This is twice now that I set up the camera, because I knew that any moment it would be walking out of those old clothes. But no, I step away for just a couple minutes, and BAM, already done and over with. This is definitely all about timing! So hopefully I get to capture it to share with you guys. \nLux-Mil is growing, and is now a Third Instar caterpillar. So things will start to get faster from here. Lux-Mil will eat a TON more, and frass clean up will become a bigger duty.
