body![IMG_1323.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPqG21FKvaGECUkDMycheeEbGYbHtxBj9jpQqky5WYCHF/IMG_1323.JPG) His is a forgotten name from the years after World War II. But we could use him about now. Kennan was the man who came up with the policy of "containment" regarding the USSR. But he believed that the Truman administration went further than he prescribed. In fact he kinda decided he was wrong, though he also thought it should have been obvious that the USSR had no intention of attacking the USA. He had a couple good years but was blackballed after Dean Acheson became Secretary of State. Crucially, Kennan was no fan of military action in small countries fighting Civil Wars. You know North vs South Korea, North vs South Vietnam. He warned loudly against the US push to unify Korea. And later he warned against getting involved in Vietnam. His thought was that the USSR loved nothing more than to watch us bog down in frightful wars where we were not invited and where we could not win. In both cases, his arguments were prescient. Now imagine if he was still alive (he did make it to 101). What would he think of the Trump administration? How would he react to their decisions regarding China, North Korea, Iran? Kennan was no hothead. He would be appalled by Trump. The careering from one idea to another. The attacking of allies and coddling of enemies. The lack of any real strategy for dealing with the world. But here's the real thing I was thinking. Kennan, Acheson, John Foster Dulles, George Marshall, Paul Nitze, Dean Rusk, Walter Lippmann. These guys fought each other in tough political battles. But I think that they would come together today howling as one against the madness of Trump. The squandering of America's power. The ping pong between threats and inaction. The macho posturing. North Korea exploded a big nuclear device today. How did our president respond? By attacking South Korea in a tweet. Yes, it's possible that North Korea will launch a nuke. But I don't think he's the one who will strike first...

body![IMG_9867.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaXLnvooPxE1NuGcdS3d5iKmseMj8Pr9KBgUm8jm8XsYB/IMG_9867.JPG) If I was a Trump supporter, here's how I suppose I'd read the calamitous report that scientists leaked to the NYT (because of fears that the Trump administration would suppress it). "More liberal coastal claptrap trying to tell me how to live my life" "What does this have to do with the fact that white straight people are under siege?" "Pollution is a necessary byproduct of a successful economy" "La la la la not listening la la la la" "The anchor on Fox News interviewed one scientist who said it's all just BS. Why shouldn't I believe him/her?" "This is just another leak to fake news outlets aimed at hurting President Trump" "I read some of it. But I still trust our President over these left-wing scientists" I remember one feminist said of anti-female-activist Phyllis Schlafly, "the only real way to argue with her is to jump up and down screaming 'liar! Liar! Liar!'" That's kinda where we are today with supporters of the President. But hey, we all kinda assume the worst about our political adversaries right? Still, the comments in the Times include several who say the NYT is not to be trusted because they're publishing a report by scientists, deathly afraid (with good reason) the Trump administration will shred and suppress it. Huh? If you haven't had the opportunity to read the report, go here: https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/3920195/Final-Draft-of-the-Climate-Science-Special-Report.pdf It's monumentally frightening.

bodyI think this may be the week that the Trump Presidency began to unravel...oh for God's sake, why would I say that? What kind of an idiot am I? The thing has been an unraveling avalanche since November 9th. It's been a landslide of continental proportions separating Americans into cocoons of outlandish fear, nasty accusation, and mean intent. And I fear elections won't solve this American neurosis. Things will have to collapse into chaos before we have a chance to rebuild. And by the time we do, China will have assumed the leading role on our planet. I guess one could say I'm just jaded and cynical. If you think that please, please...tell me how things can get better. Tell me how this country can awaken from this nightmare and come together again. I just can't see it myself. We have given the reigns of power to people who are craven, stupid and insecure. This won't end well.

body![IMG_9019.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQjFRDRsNQVZD6PWLoYSik6bUb7EcMNcRLgZK4A5eh2qC/IMG_9019.JPG) When I go to Bangkok I'm always pleased by the number of jobs that would drive American efficiency experts crazy. Way too many department store employees. Greeters everywhere. Men in spiffy uniforms watching parking lots or, in one case at Q House Lumpini, a man whose job it is to stand near the parking garage exit and make sure people crossing the lane don't get hit by departing automobiles. These humans do not appear to feel bad about their employment. No, to the contrary, they all seem to be quite happy doing what they're doing. I don't know why many other countries are so "inefficient" but I'm glad they are. Efficiency is a fine goal, but there's only one reason to make it a singular goal: to make more money for people who already have a ton. And like so many corporate mantras, efficiency is a short-sighted, short-term goal that needs to be tempered. A planet on which humans are worked out of the equation is madness. Machines will always beat humans in the efficiency race. Machines will always beat humans when it comes to health costs and the like. And that's fine. Can't argue with that. But humans can adapt and make judgments that machines can't. Humans are reliant on an electric grid. And humans are good for other humans. Our interactions make us better humans. Our ability to pay attention, to investigate, to see each other is unique. But, just 10 years into the smartphone age, it looks like we're giving more and more power to gizmos and servers and programmed machines. The Amazon Echo and the Ask Google thing scare me. To me they represent step one in the race to let machines do our thinking for us. In California, after an earthquake, the poorer neighborhoods always get back on their feet more quickly than the richer hoods. Why? Because an earthquake is just another in the long list of challenges that these people have to deal with creatively and immediately. Rich people lose their shit when they have to do basic things for themselves. So I say let's ease up on efficiency. Let's pick places where it's good (energy use for example) and avoid places where it's not so good (the replacement of humans). Companies will still make profits. Rich people will still be pampered. And human beings will still have a reason to live.

Machines will always beat humans when it comes to health costs and the like. And that's fine. Can't argue with that.\n\nBut humans can adapt and make judgments that machines can't. Humans are reliant on an electric grid. And humans are good for other humans. Our interactions make us better humans. Our ability to pay attention, to investigate, to see each other is unique. \n\nBut, just 10 years into the smartphone age, it looks like we're giving more and more power to gizmos and servers and programmed machines. The Amazon Echo and the Ask Google thing scare me. To me they represent step one in the race to let machines do our thinking for us. \n\nIn California, after an earthquake, the poorer neighborhoods always get back on their feet more quickly than the richer hoods. Why? Because an earthquake is just another in the long list of challenges that these people have to deal with creatively and immediately. Rich people lose their shit when they have to do basic things for themselves. \n\nSo I say let's ease up on efficiency. Let's pick places where it's good (energy use for example) and avoid places where it's not so good (the replacement of humans). \n\nCompanies will still make profits. Rich people will still be pampered. And human beings will still have a reason to live.",

body![IMG_8933.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeT1zz2isrQwrBkitrBwfymm6QQmrdiXdfh6sAExhycYw/IMG_8933.JPG) What in life is creepier than a smiling Jared Kushner? Other than the visages of several serial killers, not much. It's the smile of a man who may have had to take lessons in how to turn up the corners of his mouth. It's the smile of a man who is always thinking, "how are you going to screw me before I can screw you?" I can imagine him unhinging his jaws and swallowing rats whole. I can imagine him coming upon a rattlesnake and staring it into unconsciousness. He's so quiet that I always imagine his voice to be either Donald-Duck or the big dog from Up. But at the same time I can also see the guy who bought a 50-year-old skyscraper for $1,800,000,000. I can see the man who watched terrified as fat Chris Christie put his father behind bars. I also why Ivanka fell for him. He's the anti-dad. Quiet where dad is loud. Jared avoids attention where dad is a narcissist. He is thin and lean where dad is fat. Calculating to an extreme where dad is an uncontrollable steamroller. It's especially obvious when you compare him to Ivanka's brothers. Eric and Don jr have the look of violently abused children who don't know how to get away from their abuser. They are not smart guys and I'm sure that dad reminds them of this at every opportunity. To dad they are either freeloaders or threats. The Trumps are a family-business writ large. Inbred traits that create fear and mistrust. A need to make money that allows any and all actions regardless of its effect on blood relatives. Jared Kushner is maybe a half-step above the Trumps, but that step is collapsing. I can't see how this ends well for him, though he is lucky to be the smartest guy in the room whenever he visits the missus' relatives. And in the end, when Ivanka has to choose between Jared and daddy, I think she is smart enough to toss papa under the bus.

body![IMG_8929.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcnbf7uEFxruAP8nmBuF6oXpQgagaigH6nyGDkHcogUV9/IMG_8929.JPG) Youngstown, OH in better days. Ok, this may sound a bit outrageous, but hear me out. I think we're coming close to experiencing a rural American cull. Not a cull like Stalin's or Hitler's. No, a more subtle and slow cull in which this country sheds people whose lives have stalled: jobless, un-educated, unhealthy. These human beings live in small towns and lesser metropolises that dot heartland states. Toledo, Peoria, Huntington WV, New Bern NC, Reading PA, Pocatello, Youngstown, Flint, Terre Haute, WallaWalla WA. These towns stopped growing eons ago. They offer nothing to their shrinking population of young people. Let's look closely at Youngstown per US Census figures. Population 2016: 64,312 (a 4.4% drop from 2010). Per-capita income 2015: $15,056. % of population in poverty: 38.3% % over 25 w/ bachelor's degree: 11.7% % under 65 with a disability: 16.8% Health care/Social Assistance Receipts: $844,000,000 Now if you are a Republican devoted to lower taxes for the "makers" and less government assistance for the "takers", Youngstown is sweet manna from heaven. Cut Education, Medicaid, SNAP, WIC, Medicare, SSDI, etc etc. and watch the boom in Youngstown! Watch as these people leave their creaking homes to get the thousands of jobs that result. Right? Well no. Watch these people sink further until their actual lives are in jeopardy. Watch as they suffer medical crises that must go untreated. Watch as they struggle feed their children. Watch as their life-expectancy begins to fall. But you won't get to watch because this will all take place while we're watching TV pundits argue about politics as sport. This slow-motion human destruction isn't good TV. It's not the stuff of YouTube "virality". I figure it will take 5-10 years for the death toll to climb into the hundred thousands. The smallest of these towns will die quickly and completely. The larger ones will be off life-support living in a GOP-induced coma. Now I shouldn't blame just the Republicans. Democrats often seem just as eager to be tax-cutting fools as their GOP colleagues. But the Republican Party has almost become a single-issue party: cut taxes to kill government. It is scary that in many of these towns people voted for their own destruction. But I guess they didn't see it that way. I suspect they do believe in the redemptive power of tax cuts. They do trust that rich people will spend their money on capital improvements. They do believe that the coal and steel and auto jobs will come back. They do believe that globalization can be stopped. Unfortunately, none of those things are true. Efficient use of resources to cut production and service costs; that's the economic religion the USA. And labor always loses in that scenario. So we will need less labor not more. We will need fewer people. We will need a cull.

bodyI am a 55-year-old gay Arab-American man. But I don't get much grief from that because, A) my skin is white. B) my voice is deep. I call it white masculine privilege. It's a mark of the superficiality of American fear. I see it this way. If I had darker skin or an effeminate way (or both) I would be judged more harshly by a decent percentage of the population. Inside I'd be the same guy with the same hopes and memories and dreams and wishes and loves and losses. And let me admit that at times, I am no better. I judge in fear as well. But I do try to acknowledge it quickly and - importantly - I try not to act on it. I don't know who said it but someone said that while this country has long been angry, it has rarely been this mean. I don't know if blacks and gays and other minorities would agree but it does seem that meanness and blame are at the center of America's culture now. I wish I had some political clout. I don't of course, because I'm not rich enough to put my mug on TV. But if I did, I'd listen. I would ask people to tell me what they think. What they believe. I'd let them finish. And then I'd ask questions. I would be honest with them. If they disagree I would let them tell me why. But most importantly, I'd try to plant a seed of tolerance by allowing them their beliefs regardless of how they make me feel. The only things I would not accept are threats to hurt others. That's the line they can't cross. Listening is not easy sometimes. It is getting harder and harder these days because people are narrowing the scope of information they accept. But it really is the only thing that can save discourse. It's all we have left. It's been my experience that when people feel heard they step away from their anger. I mean look at Trump: he convinced a lot of people that he heard their concerns. Of course, he only listened because of his need to be loved. And his supporters have lowered their hopes to the point that making liberals mad is their main goal. So again, I don't hope 2018 brings a new crop of angry politicians. I can't imagine how this country survives unless we turn down the volume on "pissed-offness. If I had money, I would run. But I doubt I'd win. I wouldn't look at like a sporting event. I wouldn't tell people what they want to hear. I wouldn't tell rich people that they would have a pawn to do their bidding. I wouldn't try to hide my faults and they would be pretty easy to find. But maybe, just maybe, I'd plant a seed. Maybe I'd start a few other people on the road to being listeners. It's worth a try.
