      "body": "I can't believe I grew up believing that as a parent I would have some supreme influence on the outcome and performance of my children's lives. I now realize how silly this notion truly was. The truth is actually much less exciting and noble if you ask me: parents have the ability to nudge in one direction or the other but children will become whoever they damn well please. \n\nOn a regular basis I see incredible children come out of family situations where there is no parenting at all. In my own case, I was not supervised as a child nor was I guided or prodded to do anything positive. When I dropped out of high school my parents did not know nor did they care. Yet something inside me knew that I could do better and that drove me to seek constant improvement in my life. Had I followed the road my parents gave me I would have hit the dead end years ago. \n\nThen there are those children who come from incredible home situations and turn away from all of it. They openly rebel against their parents and spit in the face of everything their parents have done to give them a kickstart in life. Watching these parents struggle with what they could have done better is tragic and sad to watch because they actually believed that if they just did a couple of important things their children would follow in lock step to wherever their parents wanted them to do. \n\nMy wife and I struggled with our children, like all parents do, to help them learn some of the important basics in life. Make your bed, bath, brush your teeth, etc. We never felt that we won even one of these battles because our children never developed any of them to the point of being called a habit in their youth. So, long after we gave up on these battles, suddenly, they started to adopt these habits on their own: even to the point of being more aggressive about them then we ever were. So what happened? Did all of the years of battling those young minds of mush finally sink in and pay off. I wish! Instead, as their minds finally started to fully develop, they began to see the importance of these things for themselves. \n\nIt is an amazing thing to watch your children turn into full fledged wonderful adults. But not one of them is the way I had envisioned or pushed them to be. Their personalities, likes, and dislikes are unique to them in every way. I can see some areas where I have influenced them but it has nothing to do with all of those battles we fought as a parent. It turns out that much of my influence on them was simply my example. As they got older they saw in me things they wanted to emulate and also character flaws that they wanted to leave behind. I look back now and wonder how many of those battles were actual worth the drama and the pain. \n\nPart of me is starting to think that we've gotten things all backwards when it comes to raising children in our society. We ask them to have their lives all figured out before their brains are fully developed.  we hold them accountable to an education system where if they blow it in their youth it can have far reaching real life consequences,  and we try to educate them on big picture concepts when they really have no ability to understand them.\n\nNow I'm not to naive to think that we should just abandon all parenting and instruction while they're young. But I am starting to believe that we assign way to much value to these moments and as parents we blame ourselves way too much when we are constantly losing these battles. Instead of looking for outright victory, maybe instead we should see it as planting seeds that will only flourish when the rest of their grey matter finally arrives: until then, we are a coach, a trainer, and a support.\n\nThere are few things I hate more than watching a parent destroy themselves because of how a particular child turned out. The truth is you never had a chance from the very beginning. Each child comes with their own personalities and issues and whether or not you will truly be able to influence a child is actually not up to you: it's up to them. After all you can do it is your child who will decided whether or not to adopt anything about who you are or what you have to say. But we grew up believing that it is the parent that determines everything about the child. There it is, that's the lie! Yes you can influence them in one direction or another, but only if they let you. A nudge here and a nudge there may be all that they give you. \n\nUltimately I've decided that for me the most important thing that I want for my children is for them to have a relationship with me. This allows me to still have some level of positive influence on their lives but this can only happen if we have a loving relationship and if they have respect for me. I decided that no single battle was worth the destruction of that relationship. Because of this choice I now have wonderful relationships with all of my children. Are they all doing exactly what I had hoped they would? Not even close. But they are all kind, hard working adults who are contributing to society in their own wonderful and unique ways. This was another hard realization for me as a parent: maybe what I wanted them to be wasn't what was best for them after all. I mean, truthfully, it is their life not mine. \n\nSo parents I think it's time to gives yourselves a little bit of a break and some credit. If you are trying to live up to some standard that says good kids come from good parents and everything your children do is a reflection back on you then you have set yourself up for failure. You have been sent these wonderful and terrible little souls and you have the ability to influence and nudge them as best you can. But they get to decide the outcome. Not you! So how can you blame yourself for the outcome when other people get to decide? It really doesn't make much sense does it?\n\nSo give yourself a break and realize that in many ways you are just a spectator. Enjoy the show!",
