As you may have heard, the Long Beach, California rapper has developed quite the reputation for saying exactly what is on his mind both on and off record, regardless of the consequences, and I submit that we all stand to benefit from his dedication to the cause.\n\nhttps://youtu.be/ulMu23o-xkE\n\nAs you can see above, midway through a typical softball interview at Coachella Vince Staples commandeered his conversation with Nadeska Alexis to call out R. Kelly for what we all know him to be: a predator. While Vince didn’t share any new information, (Buzzfeed published the definitive story on Kelly’s predatory nature several months ago) the attention Staples has brought to the issue now serves as a brilliant proof of concept for his War Ready mandate.\n\nTragically for all of us, media of all kinds have a stake in the artists and personalities they benefit from covering. In the case of R. Kelly, Alexis’ inexplicable attempt to shut down the conversation is a brutal example of this bias in action, and frankly, it is infuriating to see how far some are willing to go to protect someone so vile.\n\nWhile I recognize the difficult position Alexis was put in, those in positions of power must not allow personal incentive to trump their better nature. Like Vince Staples, we must all come together to recognize the power of our voices, and the importance of telling truth to those in power. The struggle we experience in confronting those who have done wrong is real, however the cost of not doing so is far greater.\n\nR. Kelly’s lawyer and publicist dropped him only six days after Vince Staples spoke up at Coachella. Like Hannibal Buress’ comedy bit regarding the questionable actions of Bill Cosby, Staples simply pointed a spotlight on an issue and brought about change. Now ask yourself a simple question: how long would Kelly have remained a part of the music industry if Alexis was successful in shutting Staples down?\n\nWe need more people like Vince Staples.",

King Gizzard &amp; The Wizard Lizard  – <em>Flying Microtonal Banana</em></strong><img title=\"King Gizzard &amp; The Lizard Wizard\" src=\"https://i0.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/King-Gizzard-91.jpg?resize=960%2C640\" alt width=\"960\" height=\"640\" /><br></h4>\r\nIt feels wrong to place King Gizzard &amp; The Lizard Wizard at number ten, however the ambitious Australian rockers certainly put the pressure on themselves when they declared they would release <b>five </b>studio albums in 2017. As they have in the past, King Gizz restricted themselves on <i>Flying Microtonal Banana</i>,playing only microtonal instruments. The result is arguably the band’s best album of the year, rendering the band’s strange brand of psych-rock in a tuning rarely heard in modern music. Tracks like ‘Billabong Valley’ benefit most from this new sonic palette, fitting the story of <a href=\"https://genius.com/King-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard-billabong-valley-lyrics\">Mad Dog Morgan</a> perfectly within the band’s unique instruments.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/5T1hADercEPi4T5caBhIfE\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>9. St. Vincent – <em>MASSEDUCTION</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"st-vincent-nedda-afsari-billboard-1548\" src=\"https://i0.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/st-vincent-nedda-afsari-billboard-1548.jpg?resize=1200%2C794\" alt width=\"1200\" height=\"794\" /><br>\r\n\r\n<a href=\"http://lyfstyl.ca/tag/st-vincent\">St. Vincent</a> has always had a talent for producing powerful art-rock anthems with an intellectual bend, but when it was revealed she was working with hit-maker Jack Antonoff I must admit I got concerned: would <i>Masseduction </i>retain the edge I’ve always appreciated in her music? Thankfully, the answer is undoubtedly yes. On St. Vincent’s fourth studio album the guitar heroine rips through infectious jams packed with stories of love, loss, libido, and libations, but underneath it all the prodigal guitar picker is still there. The solo on ‘Pills’ is worth the price of admission itself.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/4RoOGpdrgfiIUyv0kLaC4e\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>8. Idles – <em>Brutalism</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"Idles band\" src=\"https://i2.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/tumblr_otadyt0BS51sgnztvo1_12801.jpg?resize=960%2C640\" alt width=\"960\" height=\"640\" /><br>\r\n\r\nWhile artists like <a href=\"http://lyfstyl.ca/tag/father-john-misty/\">Father John Misty</a> seem comfortable making comedy of political chaos, bands like IDLES seem to revel in it. This isn’t to say that lead singer Joe Talbot is pleased about recent political devolutions, however he sure has a talent from wringing it out into righteous punk rock broiled in British angst and frustration. Brutalism sounds exactly like it’s name suggests, and it’s fucking refreshing. Where <a href=\"http://lyfstyl.ca/tag/father-john-misty/\">Father John Misty</a> has chosen to make jokes, Joe Talbot and his band of angry men have decided to voice their frustrations in a powerful way.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/4KKBC1uABloAIFc0TiUv5r\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>7. Father John Misty – <em>Pure Comedy</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"Father John Misty\" src=\"https://i2.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/father-john-misty-portrait-oct-2016-billboard-15481.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=750%2C500\" alt width=\"750\" height=\"500\" /><br>\r\n\r\nIt’s almost hard to imagine what John Tillman would have released if he had waited until <i>after </i>the 2016 election to write <i>Pure Comedy, </i>the third release under his smart-ass pseudonym <a href=\"http://lyfstyl.ca/tag/father-john-misty/\">Father John Misty</a>. Firmly established as an unabashed misanthrope, Misty riffs on religion, politics, drugs, and depression with a ruthless ease that feels perfectly fit for our modern malaise. In a world that seems to have gone to hell, Misty’s answer is to muse along with laughter, but it’s hard to fault the guy. He’s got a knack for turning nasty realities into neat little truths.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/3CoFoDt6zt5EKxmTpOX32b\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>6. Thundercat – <em>Drunk</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"Thundercat\" src=\"https://i0.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/thundercat1.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=750%2C500\" alt width=\"750\" height=\"500\" /><br>\r\n\r\nLike the aforementioned <i>Harmony Of Difference, </i>Thundercat’s latest release <i>Drunk </i>is a jazz offering worthy of its time, however Thundercat’s signature 8-string bass provides another unique layer to what is otherwise a fun and funky hip-hop album of its own accord. Add in a layer of Thundercat’s tongue-in-cheek writing style and you’ve got a fun jazz album sure to keep listeners bouncing around to his familiar fonky bass tones.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/4anxEzh8xEKSPXKHGWiFue\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>5. Jonwayne – <em>Rap Album Two</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"JonWayne\" src=\"https://i1.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/jonwayneheader-2.14.20171.png?resize=960%2C640\" alt width=\"960\" height=\"640\" /><br>\r\n\r\nLabels of “art rap” or “indie rap” fail to respect the balance artists like JonWayne maintain. In the midst of a consonant and soulful rap album the veteran musician and beatmaker bares his soul, thriving on the adversity that has informed his life and career to this point. Tracks like ‘Paper’ are wise beyond their creator’s years, but the closer ‘These Words Are Everything’ stands as the perfect encapsulation of a man dedicated to his craft, no matter the costs. Listen and learn.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/0qbfYiC2wnBPyCqtAeyKj8\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>4. BROCKHAMPTON – <em>Saturation II</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"BROCKHAMPTON\" src=\"https://i0.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/5925e510b9b44725425aee8f-14957367014051.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=750%2C500\" alt width=\"750\" height=\"500\" /><br>\r\n\r\nBROCKHAMPTON set out to saturate listeners with content in 2017, and after three respectable albums in one year the up-and-coming “boy band” have achieved their goal, in the process releasing at least two LPs worth of quality content. <i>Saturation II</i> serves as coming out party for the most skilled members of the group, allowing Kevin Abstract, Ameer Vann, Merlin Wood, Matt Champion, Romil Hemnani, and JOBA to establish their role within the group. Each have their own strengths, and together the ensemble has delivered some of the most interesting music of 2017.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/0XnqQzdSFAml08XZoRt1St\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>3. Kamasi Washington – <em>Harmony of Difference</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"K77A3650.jpg\" src=\"https://i1.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/img1509375551192-168-1-1271.jpg?resize=960%2C640\" alt width=\"960\" height=\"640\" /><br>\r\n\r\nFollowing up the legendary double-album <i>The Epic</i> in 2015(*), Kamasi Washington released another revelation of a jazz album in <i>Harmony Of Difference. </i>In hindsight, <i>HoD </i>serves as the appropriate entree to <i>The Epic’s </i>main course, but this is mostly due to the latter’s 3-hour run-time. At 30-something minutes, <i>Harmony Of Difference </i>is an accessible jazz album anchored by Washington’s brilliant saxophone play. It’s a go-to whenever I want to get lost in something without lyrics.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/1mFuFPBz9kBDdXylMNolu7\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>2. Alex Lahey – <em>I Love You Like A Brother</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"Alex Lahey\" src=\"https://i1.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/0008285497_101.jpg?resize=960%2C640\" alt width=\"960\" height=\"640\" /><br>\r\n\r\nAlex Lahey is likely to draw comparisons to popular Perth, Australia native Courtney Barnett, however the latest talent to come out of the pretty Australian city has her own style and energy to bring to the table, even if the accent is familiar. <i>I Love You Live A Brother </i>is a fun and affectionate rock album jam-packed with tight hooks and smart songs, all delivered with a spunk and sincerity that feels somewhat refreshing in 2017. There’s hardly a bad track on the album, and anthems like ‘Lotto In Reverse’ will leave you returning to the album again and again.\r\n\r\n&lt;iframe src=\"https://open.spotify.com/embed/album/5jLLazj9TDV3iyJyiT3mtn\" width=\"600\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;\r\n<h4><strong>1. Kendrick Lamar – <em>DAMN.</em></strong></h4>\r\n<img title=\"Kendrick Lamar\" src=\"https://i2.wp.com/lyfstyl.ca/wp-content/uploads/yOP-FRTy1.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=750%2C500\" alt width=\"750\" height=\"500\" /><br>\r\n\r\nWhat do you do after releasing the most critically acclaimed rap album of all time? You do it again, and make them say “DAMN.” Kendrick Lamar’s follow-up to <i>To Pimp A Butterfly </i>will not receive the same positive reviews, but what is clear on <i>DAMN. </i>is that King Kendrick remains on top of the rap world. With patented precision K.Dot re-establishes himself as the top dog in hip-hop, taking shots at Geraldo Rivera in bangers like ‘DNA’ before changing the pace for a slow jam with Rihanna. At this point Kendrick is just showing off, and we’re all here to benefit from it. While this is technically true, I’ve come to appreciate Ansari and co-creator Alan Yang on a level that is much closer to mastery than the title would have you believe. Master Of None is brilliant, funny and beautiful both in its aesthetics and its message. Following the life of actor Dev Shah (played by Ansari) and his friends, Master Of None articulates life for someone like Ansari (or co-creator Alan Yang), an experience with which the general populace know nothing about. The show dwells upon the recurring theme of living life in someone else’s shoes. While the show’s humble creators would have you believe they’re just trying their hand at the trades of entertainment, I assert they’ve earned their Masters Of Woke Edutainment.\n\nWoke Seinfeld\n\nWhether learning about the lack of Indian men in media (S01E04 - Indians On TV), or the stereotypes facing asian men in the dating world, or what it is like to grow up female, black, and gay in America (S02E08 - Thanksgiving) Master Of None is at its best when it is both entertaining and educating, walking a comedic line much like that of Last Week Tonight or The Daily Show. Stylistically, this focus on the everyday is one that reminds of Seinfeld, however Master Of None is definitely about something -- it’s about waking up, both culturally and socially. Waking up to see, learn from, and understand a life different from that of the traditional television family. Whether through the central narrative or within full-episode video essays, Master Of None has a way of educating both its characters and its viewers, relating them to their audience in a way that is informative and never preachy.\n\nEpisodes like “New York, I Love You,” “Thanksgiving” and “Religion” are masterpieces themselves, yet placed into the context of the entire series they stand out as crown jewels among the gold standard of television this year. And while the acting itself isn’t likely to grab the attention of award shows, there is likely more gold headed the way of Yang and Ansari, who have already earned an Emmy for their work in season one. With another fresh season full of real stories, raw comedy, and quirky jokes, Master Of None has positioned itself at the forefront of diverse, intelligent television once again, and I believe viewers are all better off for it.",

Last week one of those sites, ExtraTorrent, decided to shut down its site without warning. The site comes as the latest in a string of file-sharing sites to close due to legal trouble or other issues, and has left a number of imposters and clones in its wake. Despite some as reputable as Forbes reporting ExtraTorrent to be back online, the site remains down and those close the team have suggested it is for good. So in the wake of another .torrent site closing, what does the future of torrent culture hold? \n\nInnovation Sorely Lacking \n\nOver the last decade, torrent culture has taken the internet by storm, expanding from the first bastion of The Pirate Bay to a sprawling culture defined by a host of different websites, however the model has mostly remained the same. Innovations like The Pirate Bay’s downloadable index and the Popcorn Time streaming plug-in, Torrents-Time, have certainly offered users new streamlined experiences, however the model of browse, download, seed, has remained untouched. With the death of ExtraTorrent, the pirate community suddenly seems to be reeling in a more realistic way: one that will have consequences for users across the internet. However, this is not a new issue. Major players in the pirate community have been calling for innovation as far back as July 2016, when leading site Kick Ass Torrents was kicked off the internet. \n\n“I think maybe people now understand that we shouldn’t just have a few sites. Because everything depends on these sites. That’s the thing I always wanted, a large hybrid of lots of smaller sites instead of one big target like KickassTorrents or Pirate Bay.” - Peter Sunde, Co-founder of The Pirate Bay\n\nAt its core, pirate culture is one that thrives on the boundless dissemination of information as facilitated by the awesome powers of the internet. Recently however, the innovations surrounding pirate culture have been few and far between, leaving Pirates to rely on outdated technology. Meanwhile competing technologies like streaming services (Kodi, Freetelly) are on the rise, and with new legacy media channels available every week the role of torrents in today’s media culture seems destined to diminish.
