body
![steem_8thsinlogo.gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbBjgM5s9y7HuJuWXW1fZbsujPceUJgT6tmrSTnfAbj23/steem_8thsinlogo.gif)
___ We believe the worst crimes are the ones with no clear motive. Not only is there a crime scene, but that also leaves everyone involved wondering why? How? What? [A lone gunman opened fire into a crowd](https://globalnews.ca/news/3779602/las-vegas-shooting-gunman-dead/) of an estimated 22,000 plus people attending an outdoor country music shindig in Las Vegas on Sunday night, leaving over 50 dead and over 500 others injured. It's not unreasonable to expect that of those injured, many more will become fatalities of this outrageous act. A bewildering one to be sure. It's a crime with no clear or apparent motive or purpose. On the surface, it really just appears to be some random Joe Lunchbox type who decided for whatever reason to blow out the window to his hotel room, and then proceed to gun down a whole mess of innocent people. Normally we'd be glib and make some reference to not hating country music as much as he seemed to, but we'll forego that. We've been reading the reports and watching the videos from the event and like the rest, we're sitting here scratching our head wondering why? So aggravatingly random this was. Of all the places and all the things, what was so special about this one event and one moment in time that saw a nobody go off on so many...and for no apparent or discernible purpose? The videos are nerve wracking to be sure. As we watched one after another (_being in the digital age this is so easy nowadays as everyone seems to record everything_), listening to the panicked chatter and the screams of confusion and terror...we just kept wondering why? Normally, one can pretty easily deduce a motive even when none is readily revealed. Most are political in nature, such as protesting something like an inequity or perceived slight, and others are simply pure acts of hate and wanton chaos. But this event doesn't seem to have any of that surrounding it at all. Nothing. For all intents and purposes, it would be much like walking to your local bus stop as you do every morning to get to work, and some random nobody walks up and opens fire on everyone standing there. These aren't even the same people every day standing there. It was completely and utterly random. Typically though, with those acts that are perpetrated only to instill panic and fear and to engage in the chaos of things, the gunman(men) can be picked apart as radicals, extremists, having deep hatred for this or that group, or have been in and out of mental clinics since as far back as anyone would care to remember. They're otherwise unhinged. So their reasoning for the seemingly random event becomes less random. But that guy. **THAT** guy? So random and in defiance of anything resembling logic or reason. The gunman at the bus stop. No one ever could've seen it coming or predicted it. It just happened. Every report we have read seems to indicate that the gunman had no criminal history, wasn't on anyone's radar, wasn't mentally unwell (_at least nothing revealed as of yet_), or any of the other well known MOs that we would expect to see from such an incident. He was just some random guy who did a crazy violent thing for no apparent reason. And repeatedly, no less. We can't be sure because there's no real timeline for the videos we watched, but it seemed to us that he reloaded at least a couple times after emptying his clips. So there's intent. Clear intent. It wasn't a random dude opening fire and then he realized what he had done and stopped. He reloaded. A couple times it seems. That shows he had every intent on hurting, maiming or killing people. But **WHY?** Right now it's like an itch that can't be scratched. You know that feeling? Like the puzzle that is missing that one piece and it's maddening. You have so much of the story except the final page. Imagine reading a great book and the big reveal is coming and the last page just ain't there. The "_Whodunit and why they done it_" page. This is like that. It didn't take long for ISIS to pop up and claim that he was acting on their behalf either. Galling. Claims that he had converted to Islam and was "a soldier" in their cause. UGH. We suppose nothing can be really ruled out at this point, but the plausibility of that claim is dubious at best and strains credulity. Make no mistake though - the gunman went from nobody Joe Lunchbox to instant terrorist in a muzzle flash. And that is exactly what he is - a terrorist. This is how they roll. This is what they do. This is their MO. Terror. That said, however, we would be hard pressed to believe any ISIS connection in there. This terrorist more likely than not acted alone, and didn't fly anyone's banner. "_...against all enemies, foreign and domestic..._" That line keeps roiling around in our head. Over and over again. Many are saying this is [one of the worst ever mass shootings in US history](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/10/02/worst-mass-shootings-u-s-history/722254001/#). Some records aren't worth having. This is one of those times. It escapes us how any of this is even possible? Sure we could point a finger at the 2nd Amendment and all the "good" it has done the country, but really, is that even the case here? That the 2nd Amendment made this possible? That it was that alone that afforded this terrorist the opportunity to do what he did? That without the 2nd Amendment in place, none of this would've happened? No. It has fuck all to do with it. We get really annoyed seeing it referenced so often in the posts surrounding the event. It's nauseating. The 2nd Amendment didn't make this possible. Choice did. If Joe Lunchbox decides that he wants to go kill some people, he'll find a way. Whether he is legally allowed to own a firearm or not isn't gonna stop him (_or her_) at all. Drugs are illegal, yet drugs remain to this day a "thing" all across the world. So if firearms were rendered illegal _tomorrow_, and the 2nd Amendment repealed as a matter of due course, would that put an end to gun crime? Hell naw. We can't even begin to imagine the pain those families must be feeling right now. To know that their loved ones were out having a good time, surrounded by others doing likewise, and then this happened. At least families of gang-bangers and "bad guys" know a time may come when their kin will meet a horrible end...but these families? Yeah not at all. That's something many or all never had to give a second thought to. That one day, right outta the blue, their kin would be killed or wounded in such a manner for being guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and nothing more than that. Sadder still is that the terrorist will never see his day in court. Will never have to answer for this atrocity. The coward took his own life and denied those families any real closure. We're pretty sure that not one of them is weeping for the loss of his life, but we're equally sure that most or all are lamenting instead that he will never have to face or atone for his cowardice. And the world waits with bated breath, hanging on every new story that appears, looking for that elusive "_WHY?_" to be answered. Too many people died or were otherwise wounded in a senseless act. Even if they did dig up a motive, for many, the closure just won't be there because no answer could ever make sense as to the "_WHY?_" this happened. For many more, ourselves included, all we can do is write about this as a means for catharsis. To join in the ranks of the multitude of people right now everywhere left scratching their heads, knowing full well that no answer will ever make sense to them. How could it? Is there really ever gonna be an answer that any of us could listen to or read and have us all going, "_Yeah, okay. It makes sense now. We get why they did it._"? No. And that's all for the better because it means that none of us would be willing to legitimize the "_WHY?_". Now we're left to hope and pray that this doesn't set off an avalanche of copycats who would be looking to cash in on the misery and get noticed. That this sees people staying away in droves because now they feel that even in large public gatherings, no one is safe. That sees a world gripped by fear and paranoia (_though a justified paranoia_) enough to have people live lesser lives because they don't wanna be the next ones on a tally sheet. We do hope and pray, but a lifetime of watching the world inch forward has taught us cynicism and how the real world works, and we're far too cynical to believe that this will be the last event like this. The cynic and realist in us knows only too well that right now, somewhere out there in the world is someone reading a story about the event and already making plans to best the numbers of casualties. Not only is there a crime scene, but that also leaves everyone involved wondering why? How? What?\n\n[A lone gunman opened fire into a crowd](https://globalnews.ca/news/3779602/las-vegas-shooting-gunman-dead/) of an estimated 22,000 plus people attending an outdoor country music shindig in Las Vegas on Sunday night, leaving over 50 dead and over 500 others injured. It's not unreasonable to expect that of those injured, many more will become fatalities of this outrageous act. A bewildering one to be sure.\n\nIt's a crime with no clear or apparent motive or purpose. On the surface, it really just appears to be some random Joe Lunchbox type who decided for whatever reason to blow out the window to his hotel room, and then proceed to gun down a whole mess of innocent people. Normally we'd be glib and make some reference to not hating country music as much as he seemed to, but we'll forego that.\n\nWe've been reading the reports and watching the videos from the event and like the rest, we're sitting here scratching our head wondering why? So aggravatingly random this was. Of all the places and all the things, what was so special about this one event and one moment in time that saw a nobody go off on so many...and for no apparent or discernible purpose?\n\nThe videos are nerve wracking to be sure.\n\nAs we watched one after another (_being in the digital age this is so easy nowadays as everyone seems to record everything_), listening to the panicked chatter and the screams of confusion and terror...we just kept wondering why?\n\nNormally, one can pretty easily deduce a motive even when none is readily revealed. Most are political in nature, such as protesting something like an inequity or perceived slight, and others are simply pure acts of hate and wanton chaos. But this event doesn't seem to have any of that surrounding it at all. Nothing.\n\nFor all intents and purposes, it would be much like walking to your local bus stop as you do every morning to get to work, and some random nobody walks up and opens fire on everyone standing there. These aren't even the same people every day standing there. It was completely and utterly random. Typically though, with those acts that are perpetrated only to instill panic and fear and to engage in the chaos of things, the gunman(men) can be picked apart as radicals, extremists, having deep hatred for this or that group, or have been in and out of mental clinics since as far back as anyone would care to remember.\n\nThey're otherwise unhinged. So their reasoning for the seemingly random event becomes less random.\n\nBut that guy. **THAT** guy? So random and in defiance of anything resembling logic or reason. The gunman at the bus stop. No one ever could've seen it coming or predicted it. It just happened.\n\nEvery report we have read seems to indicate that the gunman had no criminal history, wasn't on anyone's radar, wasn't mentally unwell (_at least nothing revealed as of yet_), or any of the other well known MOs that we would expect to see from such an incident. He was just some random guy who did a crazy violent thing for no apparent reason.\n\nAnd repeatedly, no less.\n\nWe can't be sure because there's no real timeline for the videos we watched, but it seemed to us that he reloaded at least a couple times after emptying his clips. So there's intent. Clear intent. It wasn't a random dude opening fire and then he realized what he had done and stopped. He reloaded. A couple times it seems. That shows he had every intent on hurting, maiming or killing people.\n\nBut **WHY?**\n\nRight now it's like an itch that can't be scratched. You know that feeling? Like the puzzle that is missing that one piece and it's maddening. You have so much of the story except the final page. Imagine reading a great book and the big reveal is coming and the last page just ain't there. The \"_Whodunit and why they done it_\" page. This is like that.\n\nIt didn't take long for ISIS to pop up and claim that he was acting on their behalf either. Galling. Claims that he had converted to Islam and was \"a soldier\" in their cause. UGH. We suppose nothing can be really ruled out at this point, but the plausibility of that claim is dubious at best and strains credulity.\n\nMake no mistake though - the gunman went from nobody Joe Lunchbox to instant terrorist in a muzzle flash.\n\nAnd that is exactly what he is - a terrorist. This is how they roll. This is what they do. This is their MO. Terror.\n\nThat said, however, we would be hard pressed to believe any ISIS connection in there. This terrorist more likely than not acted alone, and didn't fly anyone's banner.\n\n\"_...against all enemies, foreign and domestic..._\"\n\nThat line keeps roiling around in our head. Sure we could point a finger at the 2nd Amendment and all the \"good\" it has done the country, but really, is that even the case here? That the 2nd Amendment made this possible? That it was that alone that afforded this terrorist the opportunity to do what he did? That without the 2nd Amendment in place, none of this would've happened?\n\nNo.\n\nIt has fuck all to do with it. We get really annoyed seeing it referenced so often in the posts surrounding the event. It's nauseating. The 2nd Amendment didn't make this possible. Choice did.\n\nIf Joe Lunchbox decides that he wants to go kill some people, he'll find a way. Whether he is legally allowed to own a firearm or not isn't gonna stop him (_or her_) at all. Drugs are illegal, yet drugs remain to this day a \"thing\" all across the world. So if firearms were rendered illegal _tomorrow_, and the 2nd Amendment repealed as a matter of due course, would that put an end to gun crime?\n\nHell naw.\n\nWe can't even begin to imagine the pain those families must be feeling right now. To know that their loved ones were out having a good time, surrounded by others doing likewise, and then this happened. At least families of gang-bangers and \"bad guys\" know a time may come when their kin will meet a horrible end...but these families? Yeah not at all. That's something many or all never had to give a second thought to. That one day, right outta the blue, their kin would be killed or wounded in such a manner for being guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and nothing more than that.\n\nSadder still is that the terrorist will never see his day in court. Will never have to answer for this atrocity. The coward took his own life and denied those families any real closure. We're pretty sure that not one of them is weeping for the loss of his life, but we're equally sure that most or all are lamenting instead that he will never have to face or atone for his cowardice. And the world waits with bated breath, hanging on every new story that appears, looking for that elusive \"_WHY?_\" to be answered.\n\nToo many people died or were otherwise wounded in a senseless act. Even if they did dig up a motive, for many, the closure just won't be there because no answer could ever make sense as to the \"_WHY?_\" this happened.\n\nFor many more, ourselves included, all we can do is write about this as a means for catharsis. To join in the ranks of the multitude of people right now everywhere left scratching their heads, knowing full well that no answer will ever make sense to them. How could it? Is there really ever gonna be an answer that any of us could listen to or read and have us all going, \"_Yeah, okay. It makes sense now. We get why they did it._\"?\n\nNo.\n\nAnd that's all for the better because it means that none of us would be willing to legitimize the \"_WHY?_\".\n\nNow we're left to hope and pray that this doesn't set off an avalanche of copycats who would be looking to cash in on the misery and get noticed. That this sees people staying away in droves because now they feel that even in large public gatherings, no one is safe. That sees a world gripped by fear and paranoia (_though a justified paranoia_) enough to have people live lesser lives because they don't wanna be the next ones on a tally sheet.\n\nWe do hope and pray, but a lifetime of watching the world inch forward has taught us cynicism and how the real world works, and we're far too cynical to believe that this will be the last event like this. The cynic and realist in us knows only too well that right now, somewhere out there in the world is someone reading a story about the event and already making plans to best the numbers of casualties.\n\nFor that, we hate the world for the cynical nature it has fostered over the decades.\n\nTo know that tonight, as we sleep, someone somewhere is already making plans to outdo this...and that enrages us.\n\nWhat have we allowed ourselves to become?\n\nFree your 8 (_and keep those wounded in your thoughts for a safe journey back_)\n~ SC\n\nAs always, if you have any questions, concerns, comments or suggestions, feel free to leave them below or contact us.\n\n
Find us on the web:\n[Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/The8thSin/)\n[Twitter](https://twitter.com/8thSinOriginal)
\n___\n
![steem_keepcalm.gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfXcm37PtzF7agdVYdA42XrXEwmBep1PkUZsnMYpY7D6d/steem_keepcalm.gif)
",

It’s inevitable. Back in 2012, energy giant Suncor adopted a policy for safety at their sites that included random drug screens. These were over and above the now very routine drug screens used by most as a pre-screen for employment. Up until their policy change, really all one needed to do was successfully pass a pre-screen test and they were golden. That all changed with the inclusion of their new policy. It afforded Suncor the right to randomly test their employee pool at any time and the union immediately rejected that proposal based on a flimsy “right to privacy”. The argument being that a random testing is akin to violating their rights. Until that time, as near as we can recall, the only other time that a drug screen would be involved was when there was a notable safety incident on site. The test was used to determine if the employee was or wasn’t under the influence at the time. We could be wrong, and if so, we’ll gladly include the correct information. That said, [according to Suncor, between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2012, there were 115 positive tests](https://www.biv.com/article/2014/3/suncor-energys-random-drug-testing-ruled-unreasona/) during operations as well as investigations into workplace fatalities going back as far as 2000 where 3 of the workers were determined to have been under the influence at the time (_lending credence to the tests after an accident or incident we mentioned earlier_). Still, the union wasn’t having it. They applied for, and received an injunction stalling the new policy until it passed through arbitration. Which it didn’t. Hardly a surprise to anyone, really, seeing as how the province is so union-friendly and union catering. All they need do is cry a little and everyone bends over backwards. Well, no surprise to anyone except maybe us. We were appalled that the brakes were applied to such a move. The oilpatch is so rife with substance use/abuse it’s not even funny. All sadly anecdotal at best via informal studies and polls, because hey, who wants to admit they have a substance problem, right? [One such informal screen](https://www.thestar.com/news/atkinsonseries/2015/09/04/albertas-oilsands-workers-lead-a-patch-work-life.html) suggested that: > “...40 to 50 per cent of workers engage in illicit drug use — either to enhance work performance or to cope with stress.” We’re not so sure about any of you, but that stat, anecdotal or not is very troubling indeed. That would mean there’s almost a 50/50 chance that the person working right next to you is under the influence or has been recently. Depending on the area you are working in, especially in production areas of the site/plant, that is highly concerning and something none of us should have to even consider or think about. Suncor’s biggest directive, not unlike any other major oil company, is that they believe you arrived in one piece and you should be leaving in one piece. They all have their in-house policy (_Suncor’s is “Journey To Zero”_), and they all do what they can to enforce it. No one wants to see a coworker get hurt or killed. But everyone wants their “rights”. And that is always where the war will begin. That moment when you see two sets of rights clash head on into each other. It then becomes a question of which set of rights will be declared more intrinsic and prevailing? A brief timeline of the case thus far was of course, the planned implementation of the random testing which led to the arbitration ruling that no, it can’t proceed because “privacy rights”. Where did it go from there? Well, it then went on to the Court of Queen’s Bench and was overturned, allowing them to perform the screens. That in turn led to an immediate appeal by the union folk, which was also laid waste by the Alberta Court of Appeal in a unanimous decision. Their ruling suggested that an entirely new arbitration panel be set up to hear the case and merits once again. [Well, they agreed with the previous ruling rather that suggested the same](https://globalnews.ca/news/3775136/court-rules-in-favour-of-suncor-on-random-drug-testing-union-to-keep-fighting/). So now we’re at cross purposes. Safety rights or privacy rights, and which one will come out on top. We imagine that the union camp right now is shitting themselves repeatedly with the prospect of another arbitration hearing, and one in which (_given their recent track record of repeated failure to impress the courts_) they stand a very realistic possibility of _losing this time_. The possibility that they may be able to claim only the initial stoppage and nothing more. They have had little luck since that first ruling. This had us in a bit of a quandary ourselves because we are staunch supporters of privacy rights and would go to the carpet for them at a moment’s notice. However, when this case appeared, and it became a matter of safety versus privacy (_though thinly veiled at best_), we knew that safety had to prevail. Safety had to be the more important “right” for one and all. We’ve had the misfortune of working side by side with those that imbibe the substances. Not once did we ever feel an overwhelming calm in doing so. Quite the _opposite_. We feared for our personal safety each and every moment we had to spend with these people. That is not an exaggeration or hyperbole. We truly feared for our well being. So much so that when we were no longer employed by them, we felt a sense of relief. So we can say that we’ve been there, and it wasn’t pretty. Just spitballing here for a minute...we think this all comes down to a matter of “_I do what I want and that shouldn’t have a consequence._” That’s how we see it. One of the biggest arguments against random testing, and in support of the paper thin “privacy rights” platform is what these people do on their downtime. We have heard it all too, in some form or another. Yet it all seems to come down to that one thing. What they do on their downtime is their own business and they shouldn’t be held to account for it. And they are so wrong. Sure, what you do on your downtime is **YOUR** business and no one else’s, but there’s always a chance at a consequence. They say that if they are on their downtime and they imbibe, the effects of their use could remain in their system for weeks in some cases (_depending on their substance of choice_), and so that would mean that if they imbibed but haven’t since they arrived at the site, they shouldn’t be punished for what happened days or weeks ago. They also clearly don’t think of their own words. If the substance can still be detected clean _weeks_ after the fact...that means your body is **STILL** impaired to a degree. No trace means no impairment. If they can still detect it weeks later, then your body is still feeling it too whether you want to admit that or not. Some have even implied that they do not imbibe at all, they were merely bystanders exposed to these things (_a la second hand smoke kinda deal_) and a failed test would be inconclusive because they didn’t actually partake themselves. Were you there? Yeah? Then you were exposed to it and it affected you whether you want to admit that or not. You made a choice and now that choice has a consequence. You chose to be there in a cloud of weed (_or whatever else_). You really think you’re gonna be unaffected sitting there with it hanging in the air? HAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, okay. Read a book and start with Basic Biology 101, or [just this article](http://www.newsweek.com/could-second-hand-pot-smoke-make-you-fail-marijuana-test-278913). You'll get stung even just being there...at least for up to 24 hours. Though if it's still detected after that time, then you may as well just admit you fucking toked up you goddamn liar. It hasn’t escaped us when we wanna champion safety versus privacy wither, in the sense that this is also the same flimsy excuse that [the US government used to strip rights away from the American populace in the guise of “safety”](https://www.aclu.org/issues/national-security/privacy-and-surveillance/surveillance-under-patriot-act). This ain’t that, though. We moved past that. This really is about the right to a safe work environment for one and all. Now, just because you don’t partake of the substances doesn’t mean you’ll never fuck up and ruin your shit or someone else’s...but you have a far less chance. We’ve seen just as many non-imbibers fuck shit up due to their own careless or reckless stupidity, but if you’re under the influence, this gets exponentially worse. Your stupid is magnified and intensified. Still spitballing...it’s a safe bet to opine that the real reason that the union is so against such things is because they know only too well that a good lot of their workforce assignment would fail a random test, and those are some bad optics that could end up hurting your own credibility and standing. Think about it – if you knew, or even reasonably suspected that half or more of your members would fail a random screen...wouldn’t you be worried too? Of course you would. A random test allowance would now put your union members in the line of fire where they would now see consequences for their behavior off site, and during their downtime. The choices they make while off the clock will now bear consequence. That ultimately forces those members to make a choice – continue to imbibe and risk the fallout if you get nailed in a random test, or stop your substance us even on your downtime and not even take the chance you might fail. To make them understand that their lives have now come down to a simple choice – do what you wanna do and to Hell with everyone else, or keep a steady, well paid position and continue earning? Make no mistake about it – a failed test in the oil patch will follow you around. You become far less employable with each one, and sometimes, one is enough to keep you out for good. We probably shouldn’t know this, but Big Oil communicates with each other all the time. Especially with regards to personnel. They do. The “majors” as they’re referred to, all keep in touch with each other and that has been ongoing since the big booms of decades gone by. It was in an effort to curtail bridge hopping that would see one employee leave **Company XYZ** to go across the bridge (_so to speak_) to work for **Company ABC**. It evolved to include seeing John Doe applying for this or that position, and they get on the blower with one another to see if John Doe left another major voluntarily or if they were bounced for an infraction. John Doe may not be getting another position up there as a result, and he’d have only himself to blame at that point. Think of it as an informal and not talked about “Black List” of sorts. If you make it to that list, good luck getting back to the oil patch again. No one wants to hire a misfit or fuckup. The liability is far too great. So imagine John Doe being part of a big ass union with thousands of members who has been paid obscenely for years, and he fails a random testing. Now John is all but unemployable and he pissed away his job future (_quite literally, and yes, pun intended_) in the oil patch. The unions have every reason to fear the random tests. So do the members. That, to us, is the biggest reason they are fighting this measure so feverishly. Like any other freedom, freedom to choose doesn’t mean freedom from consequence. Not ever. The choices you make can and often will affect you after-the-fact. Sure you’re free to keep pursuing substance use in your off hours, but that can come with a cost, and rightfully so. You have earned no special privilege or consideration simply because you were partaking in your downtime. That matters not one bit. Just take a look at the multitude of examples of people doing their own shit on their own time and it bit them in the ass. They too were merely exercising their rights, but those rights came with a cost. Namely, their jobs and their reputations. Think of all those people who [took part in rallies and protests and were outed and then subsequently fired](http://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-fires-man-for-attending-charlottesville-rally-2017-8) from their positions. Think of those that [made a Tweet that cost them their jobs and their reputation](http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-fired-2011-5?op=1/#nt-tweet-bad-things-about-your-potential-employer-1), with each one saying that their 1st Amendment rights were being violated. No, they weren’t. You had every right to say it. Your employer had every right to fire your ass and distance themselves from you like you were covered in Ebola. You are bad optics for them now, and they’re not gonna risk boycotts or anything else to keep you on their payroll. Think of those people that were [drunk off their balls and causing all kinds of insanity in cabs](http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/miami-doctor-berated-uber-driver-viral-video-fired-article-1.2611674) or busses and all caught on camera who were then promptly shamed and then fired. All of these things were done on their off time. Their downtime. Their personal time. Did it matter at all? Nope. For the moment, with still no concrete decision made with regards to the saga, the union still has their protection from bearing consequence for their choices made on their downtime. Considering their recent track record though, we’ll apt to believe that their time will come sooner than later where that protection and buffer will no longer be available to them, and would effectively expose all the union members at Suncor and everywhere else to the same treatment and conditions. It’s reasonable to suggest that the Suncor decision, if it goes the way we think it will (_with them prevailing...safety over privacy_), will be the precedent setting decision that will see every other major following suit in short order, now that they’ll legally be able to do so without any fuss. Indeed, random screens will soon become a staple at sites like that. Much to the union’s dismay. Moreso to their members who will soon have hard choices to make. It’s gonna happen. You watch. We don’t expect the union’s momentum to change for the better any time soon. Their chances at success are slim to none now. We do expect to see and read a lot from disgruntled ex-employees in the oil patch though... Indeed, random screens will soon become a staple at sites like that.\n\nMuch to the union’s dismay.\n\nMoreso to their members who will soon have hard choices to make.\n\nIt’s gonna happen. You watch. We don’t expect the union’s momentum to change for the better any time soon. Their chances at success are slim to none now.\n\nWe do expect to see and read a lot from disgruntled ex-employees in the oil patch though...\n\nFree your 8\n~ SC\n\nAs always, if you have any questions, concerns, comments or suggestions, feel free to leave them below or contact us.\n\n
Find us on the web:\n[Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/The8thSin/)\n[Twitter](https://twitter.com/8thSinOriginal)
\n___\n
![steem_keepcalm.gif](https://steemitimages.com/DQmfXcm37PtzF7agdVYdA42XrXEwmBep1PkUZsnMYpY7D6d/steem_keepcalm.gif)
",

That the duty that Bombardier now has to pay in a recent (_non binding?_) decision in the ongoing war between Boeing and them. According to Hoyle, the story reads that Bombardier nabbed a nice contract to supply Delta with shiny new CS100 planes. Delta having chosen them over Boeing or any other company. So what’s Boeing’s beef other than sour grapes? Subsidies. It’s all about that. See, [Bombardier keeps getting millions and billions funneled to it](http://nationalpost.com/opinion/andrew-coyne-bombardier-executives-nabbed-3-7b-in-subsidies-yet-the-mob-demands-we-punish-them) on the backs of the Quebec government as well as John and Jane Canadian Taxpayer. They claimed that without this cash, they’d be squeezed out of the market and the job losses would be immeasurable and devastating to the Canadian economy. So they got their handout. And then [promptly laid off thousands](https://globalnews.ca/news/3017508/bombardier-announces-2000-job-cuts-in-canada-5500-more-worldwide/) while cutting themselves nice fat bonus cheques. Cry poor then spend the handouts on yourselves? So did the average Canadian really win anything with the handout provided? Nope. We’re as Canadian as the next guy and we love our country (_most days_), but like another expressed in [his article](https://globalnews.ca/news/3771694/commentary-sorry-to-be-unpatriotic-but-im-kind-of-glad-the-u-s-spanked-bombardier/?utm_source=GlobalEdmonton&utm_medium=Facebook), we’re hard pressed to rally behind Bombardier on this one. Really hard pressed. We wouldn’t back them if we had a gun to our heads, to be honest. Yet they, like the banks, must have obviously been declared “_too big to fail_”. Hence the generous allowance given them by our ruling government. They’ve been [throttled in the media and in social circles](http://www.rcinet.ca/en/2017/03/30/bombardier-execs-get-big-bonuses-amid-massive-layoffs/) mercilessly since the announcement of the layoffs and almost every day since. These bad optics are of their own design and by their own hands. Hard to feel sorry for folks too stupid to know what kind of shitstorm they’d set off with the actions they took immediately following the handout. And then the Delta deal happened… With Boeing crying foul, alleging that Bombardier is more or less “dumping” their planes on the US market at well below cost, thanks entirely to the subsidies provided them. We can’t argue against that either, because there’s nothing to argue with. They were given billions and squandered it, and seem to have used it to get the sweet deal at pretty much cost to Delta. Much like the US accusing Canada over [softwood and the hefty countervailing duties imposed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%E2%80%93United_States_softwood_lumber_dispute), same too now with this. At a mind numbing 219%, this means the planes will clock in now at almost triple the initial cost. Feasibly, there’s no realistic way Bombardier can afford the duties and thus the contract and thus would need to withdraw (_and likely face some penalty for doing so_). The one thing that bothers us the most is the US decision and verbiage by Boeing about “market rate”. Who determines that fabled market rate anyway? And further, since Boeing doesn’t even _have_ a comparable plane in their fleet, how would they know what market value would be for such a plane? That part bothers us immensely. But still not enough for us to stand behind Bombardier. Speculation is that Boeing challenged this deal not because they simply got squeezed, but to make a play to hedge themselves against a future for those planes that they don’t even have. To provide a cushion to themselves against such planes taking a chunk of their contracts (_because they don’t make them_), instead relying on older and more expensive models they **DO** build. Smart play really. Bombardier already has a well established history of fuck ups and delays. [The train debacle in Toronto](http://www.highspeedrailcanada.com/2017/04/time-to-get-bombardier-off-gravy-train.html) being a notable one. They keep kicking the can further down the road and nothing has materialized on the contract they agreed to with Toronto to provide them said trains. In the meantime, with all the delays and time wasted, Toronto could’ve went with a different provider, told Bombardier to go fuck themselves, and they’d probably have them by now. In fleet and fully functional. But hey, we need to support Canadian companies, right? Hell, even [the UK is all up in brow over this fiasco](https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/sep/27/uk-boeing-contracts-bombardier-us) and they weighed in suggesting that deals with the US may be strained as a result unless they more or less “come to their senses” and back off the outrageous duties. Look, we’re all for patriotism and making sure that Canadians have jobs and juicy deals to look forward to, but the bottom line is – when a company this size and this scope can’t get their house in order…**let them fucking fail**. All Canada managed to do was to throw good money after bad. Now with the 219% duty imposition, and the deal all but scuttled, how soon will we see Bombardier lining up once again, hat in hand looking for more free money from the taxpayer? Oh don’t kid yourselves – it’ll happen. As sure as sunrise and sunset it’ll happen. They’ll play the patriotism card and the money will flow. More layoffs will happen, more deals will get challenged, and more bonus cheques will be cut. That’s the pitiful thing about Canada and being Canadian. We’re too nice, too gullible, and too laid back to know when we’ve fucked ourselves and everyone around us. Exponentially worsened the further up the flagpole we go, all the way to the top – being the Government itself. We wanna root for a Bombardier victory but we know too well we’d be setting ourselves up as hypocrites. Our hypocrisy knows some bounds. This would cross them. Right now, all we wanna see is Bombardier shed the contract they never should’ve been awarded, take any penalties that may be awarded as per the contract agreement signed, and to have the Government look at them with their hat in hand, and close the doors on their faces. It’s rough to say that you **WANT** a company to fail, but this is the best solution for everyone concerned. Like they say, the popular decision is not always the right one, and the right decision is not always the popular one. Allowing them to reap what they sow and to watch them fail is the right choice for all Canadians, and the taxpayers especially. But it won’t be a popular choice.
