      "body": "\n\nBob Hoelter wonders if some divine intervention was at work one frigid winter night in Griffith, Indiana, last month — because if he hadn’t decided to walk 2 miles to his local store that evening, things may have turned out a lot differently.\n\n“I usually drive. That night I decided I needed some exercise,” Hoelter told The Dodo.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2643237/size/td-2017_04_inline_related_item_mobile.jpg\n\n\nAs Hoelter crossed a bridge, he heard a noise. He stopped. Then he heard it again. It was the saddest, most heartbroken whimper, coming from below. \n\n“I was looking at the water and the land, but I don't see anything, but I hear it,” he said. “I walked back to land and I walked around and looked around.”\n\nThe cries continued from the darkness beneath the bridge. Determined to help, Hoelter crawled on his hands and knees down the culvert, completely uncertain of what he was going to find. All he knew is that someone needed him.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2809280/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\n“I get my flashlight out because I always carry a flashlight with me,” Hoelter said. “I got to the bottom. I finally see him!”\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2809279/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nAnd there, looking up at Hoelter, was a tiny, shivering, scared puppy. But Hoelter couldn’t believe what he noticed next: The pup’s muzzle was taped shut, wrapped with electrical tape. \n\n“I'm like, ‘Oh, sh*t,” Hoelter said. \n\nHoelter knew he had to act quickly. Griffith Animal Hospital wasn’t far down the road, and he hoped they were still open.\n\n“I just threw him in my jacket, crawled back up and started hoofing it to the animal hospital,” he said.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2809268/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nAnd the moment Hoelter burst through the clinic’s door, holding the puppy, is something Griffith Animal Hospital manager Lori Kovacich will never forget.\n\n“I was out of my chair and in the lobby to get him in seconds,” Kovacich told The Dodo.\n\nHorrified, Kovacich grabbed the puppy and raced him back to the veterinary staff. She moved so quickly, she never grabbed Hoelter’s name and number. “I think I kind of had tunnel vision,” she said.\n\nHoelter, happy the puppy was in good hands, headed back out to his original destination, the store.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2809271/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nThe vet staff went to work on the pup immediately. He was emaciated and his skin was severely damaged under the tape. They estimate the tape must have been around his muzzle for days.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2809269/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nThe medical team removed the tape and gave the roughly 4-month-old puppy antibiotic injections and ointment. Then they set up a bed for him with blankets and stuffed animals.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2809274/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nThe staff later discovered the pup also had a broken leg, which would require surgery. They believe someone threw him off the bridge and missed the water, and the puppy landed on the ground.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2809270/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nKovacich, so upset about the puppy’s condition, posted on the animal hospital’s Facebook page: “In my 30 years of working here, I never thought I'd see this … in real life.”\n\nHer post caught the attention of many local residents, including Mary Witting. She and her husband, Doug, are longtime clients of the vet clinic. \n\nThe couple recently lost their beloved dog and had sworn they weren’t going to get another anytime soon — until they read about the pup’s sad story.\n\n“I thought, ‘That cute little face, he needs me. I can give him 24/7 love, and I need him,’” Witting told The Dodo. \n\nThe Wittings went to meet him, instantly fell in love and decided to adopt him. They named him Louie.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2809267/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nWhile Kovacich and the Wittings were thrilled about Louie’s future, the man who had saved Louie remained a mystery.       "body": "\n\nThe bigger the dog, the more there is to love.\n\nThat is certainly the case with Presley, but for some reason, the 3-year-old pup is still missing the most important love of all — that of a forever family.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2808296/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nIn 2017, Presley caught the eye of Paula Joyner, a lead volunteer for East Mississippi Animal Rescue (EMAR), at a local animal control facility.\n\n“When we have extra room at the rescue, we are sometimes able to bring in an animal that would have otherwise been at risk of being euthanized,” Joyner told The Dodo. “Several dogs caught my attention that day, but for some reason, Presley’s big eyes spoke to my heart and soul.”\n\nVolunteers nicknamed the 103-pound American bulldog/Lab mix “Big Mama,” for her size and loving nature. But two years later, the sweet dog is still hopping from foster home to foster home.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2808293/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nPresley is extremely affectionate and doesn’t quite understand how big she really is. “Presley is a large dog, but she sees herself as a big lap baby,” Joyner said. “She loves her humans and spending time with them.”\n\nThough she may look overweight, the big-boned pup has so much to give as a playful family pet. Her foster dad, Dylan Lugibihl, explained that a lot of her unusual size actually comes from her breed background.\n\n\"The size comes from the bulldog side, but she has plenty of energy and her weight hasn't seemed to impact her health or lifestyle in any noticeable way,\" he explained. \"She frequently does long runs at the lake and explores for an average of three hours without stopping.\"\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2808300/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nPresley is full of energy and is happy to spend hours running and exploring. “Her greatest passion is finding new places to sniff around and curiosities to explore,” Lugibihl said. “She will readily splash around in any lake or pond regardless of the temperature, and enjoys being baffled by tiny fish and frogs swimming around.”\n\nPresley also loves to get clean, whether or not it’s her bathtime. She will eagerly jump into a running shower or full tub with her humans and constantly begs to be vacuumed.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2808297/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nBut bathtubs aside, Presley is generally quite respectful of her surroundings.\n\n“She doesn't jump on furniture, and for some reason, she will sit outside the doorway of the kitchen and never enter while you're cooking,” Lugibihl said. “She's 100 percent house-trained and has never chewed on anything that wasn't her toy or scratched anything in the house.  A screen door is all it takes to keep her in or out.”\n\nThe sweet pup is so trusting that she will even let her foster dad brush her teeth — though she’s still not a big fan of the activity.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2808303/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nPotential adopters unable to see past her size are missing out, noted Joyner: “She may look big and tough but she is a champion snuggler!”\n\n“We are all confused as to why it has taken so long for Presley to find her forever home,” Joyner added. “Presley is patiently waiting for her special person or family.       "body": "\n\nKhemjira Klongsanun is a running enthusiast from Bangkok, Thailand.\n\nThough she enjoys racing in competitions, Klongsanun knows some things are more important than setting a record time.\n\nLast week, Klongsanun was participating in a local marathon when something caught her eye. There, about 7 miles into the 26-mile run, she spotted a tiny puppy on the roadside with no owner or mother in sight.\n\nRather than continue on her way and leave the little dog to face the world alone, Klongsanun decided to briefly put the race on hold. She stopped — and scooped the helpless puppy into her arms.\n\nBut then she did so much more.\n\nFor the next 19 miles, Klongsanun carried the puppy as she ran.\n\nShe was now safe and in good hands.\n\nThere was a chance, perhaps, that Klongsanun could have handed the puppy off to a willing spectator or race official, but she did not.\n\nHere’s footage of her and the lucky little dog making their way down the course:\n\nSure enough, the puppy remained in Klongsanun's arms to the end.\n\nThey crossed the finish line together.\n\nThis, however, wouldn't be the end of the line for Klongsanun and her unlikely racing companion.\n\nAfter the race, Klongsanun decided to take the puppy home to be a part of her family.\n\nShe got some much-needed rest along the way.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2808362/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nKlongsanun has since taken the puppy, now named Nong Chom, in for a checkup with a vet.\n\nLater, she introduced her to her family's other dogs.\n\nNong Chom fit right in.\n\nThe once-lonely stray puppy was now surrounded by love.\n\nJust in case Nong Chom's siblings and mother were around and in need of help, too, Klongsanun and Nong Chom returned to where she'd been found to look for them. But, it seems, Nong Chom truly had been there all alone.\n\nNow, at least, Nong Chom was home.\n\nEvery rescue dog has a story of when their life changed for the better — but few, perhaps, are as memorable as Nong Chom's. And though there's no telling how much time Klongsanun lost in the race that day due to the pup, such details matter little compared to the lifetime of love that now lies ahead.\n\n",

      "body": "\n\nOn a walk through the woods in England a few years ago, photographer Sid Saunders nearly stumbled after stepping off the dirt path to avoid a puddle.\n\nSaunders thought he had stubbed his foot on a huge rock — but when he took a closer look, he noticed it was something so much more. It was a tiny, moss-covered tombstone that was just barely peeking out from behind the fallen leaves.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2807140/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nSeeing how filthy and dingy the old grave had become over the years, Saunders thought he would spruce it up a bit — and then he would be able to read who was buried there over 130 years before.\n\n“I made a point of going back the next day and cleaned it up, plus the area around it,” Saunders told The Dodo.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2807145/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\nOnce the grime and moss had been removed, Saunders realized it wasn’t just an ordinary gravesite. It was dedicated to someone’s pet rabbit — who apparently had passed away in 1882.\n\n“In memory of the little Duchie,” the headstone read, with a rabbit carved out next to the letters in the stone. “Born August 1869. Died December 1882.”\n\nSaunders was expecting the little grave to possibly belong to a dog — but it was clearly someone much smaller.\n\n\nhttp://assets3.thrillist.com/v1/image/2807141/size/tmg-article_tall.jpg\n\n\n“I was gobsmacked!” Saunders said. “When I went back and cleaned it up, I saw the little carving of a rabbit and realized that [he must have been] a Dutch breed rabbit.”\n\nWith proper care and plenty of attention, pet bunnies live 10 years or longer. Duchie, fortunately, lived to the ripe age of 13 — and his owners sweetly purchased him a custom headstone when he passed away. Unable to move and barely able to breathe through the sticky substance, the puppies whimpered and struggled until, finally, morning came and someone heard them.
