| title | The Warmth of Humanity in Inle Lake, Myanmar |
| body | My journey through Myanmar was a memorable one, not simply due to the abundance of culturally rich historical sites or cuisine, but due to the warm spirit and hospitality of the Burmese people. Coming to nation relatively new to tourism I wasn’t utterly sure how I would be perceived as a foreigner so I kept my expectations to a minimum. My last day in Myanmar was inspiring and I will be forever grateful for such a day. I spent my last day in Myanmar around the Inle Lake area. Having spent a number of days cruising around the lake and hiking, I decided to spend my last day relaxing and riding my bike around the surrounding areas. I rented a bike from my hotel for just a $1 and set off in the late morning. I had no idea where I was headed, equipped with just a map, my phone, and a portable speaker I took off into the streets as I listened to the smooth sounds of John Coltrane. My first stop came about an hour later at a local temple where I sat and watched the monks perform their daily duties. After 40 minutes or so, I continued forward. I rode for about an hour until I noticed a rather nice lake surrounded by a few homes. The area was completely silent with the exception of a few pigs and chickens roaming the area. Amazed by the beauty of this particular lake, I parked my bike and took a seat to admire the tranquil and scenic atmosphere. A few minutes passed by and the clouds began to turn a violent dark gray and within seconds it intensely began to pour. Stuck in the rain without any umbrella or coat, I quickly rushed to seek shelter under a tree. As I attempted to maneuver through the rain, I hear a voice shout at me in an unfamiliar language. I turn and see a young man who appeared around 15 signaling for me to come inside of his home. Without hesitation, I rushed towards the boy and entered his home where I was met by his mother and sister. I was given a towel to dry off and I took a seat on the bamboo floor. I soon realize that none of the family members speak a single word of English. I attempt to introduce myself in the simplest way possible and they repeat my name. I soon learn their names, names which I can hardly recall except for “La la mu.” Next, I attempt to find out their age. I use my iPhone calculator to input “25” and point to myself. Their faces light up and they smile. Each of them inputs their age into the phone, and I confirm that the boy is 15 and his sister, 17. After a few minutes, their mother comes out and brings me some hot tea and cookies. I go to the photo app on my iphone and show them a world map, I point to the United States and point back to myself. They nod and smile. I proceed to show them photos of my trips around the world and in Myanmar. They seemed to be particularly interested in my Myanmar photos, especially my photos of the big cities, Yangon and Mandalay. The mother comes back with a photo album of her own and walks me through each photo explaining the significance of each in Burmese. I smile and nod in agreement. She brings out more refreshments and we continue our conversation. An hour passes and the sky clears up. I thank them for their hospitality and capture a few photos of the family. The mother presents me with a gift of thanakha, a yellowish-white cosmetic paste made from ground bark. I shake her hand as I exit. I retrieve my bicycle and the three sit by the entrance of their home as they smile waving goodbye as I ride away. As I begin the long journey back to my hotel, I sat on my bike with a smile trying to make sense of such kindness. Although I could not verbally communicate with the family, their warm spirit, hospitality, and general kindness spoke volume to me. It was a reminder of the real warmth and spirit of humanity. |

| title | Day Trip to Gorkhi Terelj National Park |
| body | Gorkhi Terelj National Park is an excellent place if you’re looking for a day trip from Ulaanbaatar. You can take the local bus here or go book a tour through your hotel, but the best option in my opinion is through a taxi ($50 round trip) and I’ll explain why. The local bus and most tour groups will not stop at the Chinggis Khaan statue, which is a must see in Mongolia. Not only do you get the benefit of seeing his enormous 40 meter statue, there is also a pretty nice museum inside, one where you can try on traditional Mongolian clothing. If you ask, most taxi drivers will take you to both the national park and museum which seem like a logical choice since tours cost the same and only takes you to the park. If you go to the park with just one other person, you already split the cost in half for a day trip ($25). https://steemitimages.com/DQmVNZegq6fuqQTBwWtWJ72uY7GnKtTHwGBRThYTgeAiKtb/fullsizeoutput_4251.jpeg) My friend and I had a full plate of horse after a long day! |

| title | Climbing Mt. Fuji in one day |
| body | Climbing Mt. Fuji was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done in my life. I’ll admit, I was a bit overconfident. As a health conscious fitness junky, I assumed the hike would be a breeze, but was I wrong. It took every last bit of energy in me to make it to the top. From Shinjuku station, my friends and I boarded the 2:10 bus bound for the 5th station, which took about 2.5 hours and cost 2700 yen. We arrived shortly before 5, about 3 hours before we planned to actually hike. After we exited the bus and stretched our legs, we competed with hundred of Chinese tourists to take some photos of the scenery, then grabbed dinner at a restaurant nearby. 7:50 hit and we stocked up on some extra water and snacks and began our hike. The trail was pitch black, even with lights attached to our heads. The first hour or so was pretty simple until we hit the first major incline. Luckily, there were multiple rest stations throughout the trail to rest. Here, you can buy drinks, snacks, and quick meals, all which were very overpriced. The trail became considerably tough half way through. By midnight the temperature had dropped to around 40F (4.5C) though it felt much colder. On top of that, it began to rain. Each step forward and each breath we took became that much harder. The last hour was the hardest, we were cold, wet, hungry, and sleepy. To be honest, I don’t remember the last leg of the climb, I was half sleep, but somehow, I managed to get to the top. At 3:10, we finally reached the top! We rushed to the ledge to get a good view to see the sunrise. It was probably the greatest relief ever, watching the sunrise from Mt. Fuji was one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen. We stayed at the top for about an hour and a half before making our descent, which took about 4 hours. 11 total hours of hiking in one day! We reached the finish line around 9 where the local workers greeted us. We boarded the bus bound for Shinjuku at 11:30. We arrived back shortly before 2 and when I exited the bus my legs felt like jello and it hurt to take deep breaths, my body was hurt but I was proud of myself for what I had just accomplished. |

| title | How to find an apartment in Shanghai |
| body | Finding an apartment in Shanghai can be a tedious task, but you can save a lot of time if you are prepared. Follow these steps 1) Have enough money saved up: It sounds obvious, but the start up costs for an apartment can be pricey. Unlike the U.S., where you put down 1 month of rent and a deposit, in Shanghai, you have to put down 3 months of rent and 1 month deposit beforehand as they usually pay rent every 3 months. You also need to pay a commission fee of 35% to your agent. It may be possible to get around the 4 payment depending on your landlord; I was able to move in paying 1 month of rent and a 1 month deposit. 2) Set a proper budget: If you want to live alone in a decent spot then be prepared to pay at least 5000rmb ($735) a month. You could get away with a little under that, but it will be difficult. I initially set my budget at 5000 and was disappointed with each building/apartment my agent took me too. Most of them were very old, and run down. Just set your budget a bit higher and save your time. Of course, if you live with roommates you’ll pay significantly less (3500-5000) depending on the building and number of roommates. 3) Know where to look: Smartshanghai is a great place to start. Craigslist is also a good resource. Almost every expat in Shanghai knows a good agent, once you arrive, ask around and someone will guide you to a credible person. My agent was able to negotiate from 6000 per month to 5500, which was very helpful. |

| title | Which part of the Great Wall of China is the best? |
| body | Contrary to what most people believe, the Great Wall is not one long continuous wall, but rather multiple walls. Each part of the wall is unique and not so unique in its own way. Many travelers often have trouble deciding which part of the Great Wall is the best. The most popular part of the wall is Badaling and consequently, the part you will want to avoid, especially during Chinese holidays and weekends. While Badaling is quite crowded, it is the most renovated and safest. Other popular options are Jiankou, Jinshanling, Mutianyu, and Simatai. I visited Jinshanling, which is considered one of the most beautiful parts of the Great Wall and an excellent place to hike. Unlike Badaling, Jinshanling is more authentic as there is less renovation. I visited in May and saw very few tourists the entire time I was there (4 hours). Jinshanling is a bit far from Beijing (154 kilometers/96 miles), but worth it if you have the time. Lucky for me, I had some local friends drive me there, but if you don’t have the fortune of having Chinese friends then you can easily take public transportation, which will save you about $50 from having to take a tour from your hostel/hotel. From Wangjing West Station take the bus bound for Luanping (every 40 minutes between 7:00am-4:30 pm) all the way until you reach the Jinshanling Resting Area next to the highway. From here, take the free shuttle bus the rest of the 6 kilometer journey. You’ll pay about 23rmb for the bus (one way) and 65rmb for the entrance fee for Jinshanling. To return to Beijing, just go to the visitor’s section of the resting area and take the bus back, which leaves every hour. Ask about the bus schedule at the resting area when you arrive in the morning to avoid any problems later. |

"title": "Which part of the Great Wall of China is the best?",
"body": "Contrary to what most people believe, the Great Wall is not one long continuous wall, but rather multiple walls. Each part of the wall is unique and not so unique in its own way. Many travelers often have trouble deciding which part of the Great Wall is the best. \n\nThe most popular part of the wall is Badaling and consequently, the part you will want to avoid, especially during Chinese holidays and weekends. While Badaling is quite crowded, it is the most renovated and safest.\n\nOther popular options are Jiankou, Jinshanling, Mutianyu, and Simatai. \n\nI visited Jinshanling, which is considered one of the most beautiful parts of the Great Wall and an excellent place to hike. Unlike Badaling, Jinshanling is more authentic as there is less renovation. I visited in May and saw very few tourists the entire time I was there (4 hours). \n\nJinshanling is a bit far from Beijing (154 kilometers/96 miles), but worth it if you have the time. Lucky for me, I had some local friends drive me there, but if you don’t have the fortune of having Chinese friends then you can easily take public transportation, which will save you about $50 from having to take a tour from your hostel/hotel. \n\nFrom Wangjing West Station take the bus bound for Luanping (every 40 minutes between 7:00am-4:30 pm) all the way until you reach the Jinshanling Resting Area next to the highway. From here, take the free shuttle bus the rest of the 6 kilometer journey. \n\nYou’ll pay about 23rmb for the bus (one way) and 65rmb for the entrance fee for Jinshanling. To return to Beijing, just go to the visitor’s section of the resting area and take the bus back, which leaves every hour. Ask about the bus schedule at the resting area when you arrive in the morning to avoid any problems later. \n\n\n",

| title | Day Trip to Gorkhi Terelj National Park |
| body | Gorkhi Terelj National Park is an excellent place if you’re looking for a day trip from Ulaanbaatar. If you go to the park with just one other person, you already split the cost in half for a day trip ($25). https://steemitimages.com/DQmVNZegq6fuqQTBwWtWJ72uY7GnKtTHwGBRThYTgeAiKtb/fullsizeoutput_4251.jpeg) My friend and I had a full plate of horse after a long day! |

| title | Hawaii: Diamond Head vs. Koko Head |
| body | Most travelers in Oahu looking to hike will likely come across two names: Diamond Head and Koko Head, but which one is better? It largely depends on whom you ask, as there are several factors involved. Personally, I thought Koko Head was better in all aspects. I’ll highlight below. Level of Ease: Diamond Head Diamond Head is pretty easy, a lot easier than I imagined. While I was taking my Uber there, my driver warned me to take it easy and drink a lot of water so I initially thought it was challenging. I didn’t even break a sweat; it took about 15-20 minutes to reach the top. Koko Head, on the other hand, is a lot more challenging. Here, you’re actually climbing a set of old railroad tracks, 1048 to be exact. It took me about 25 minutes and I consider myself to be in excellent physical shape, the average person will probably take between 30 and 50 minutes. View: Koko Head The view at the top of Koko Head is amazing as it overlooks Hanauma Bay. Compared to Diamond Head, it’s more scenic. While Diamond Head offers beautiful scenery, much of it overlooks the city. Fewer Tourist/People: Koko Head Both places have their fair share of tourists, but Diamond Head is hands down more “touristy”, much of this is due to its location and relative ease, you’ll see more children and elderly people. With Diamond Head, I had to wait a while to take a clear shot of the view without people, at Koko Head I didn’t. Safety: Diamond Head Koko Head could actually be quite dangerous if you’re not careful. Unlike Diamond Head, you have complete freedom to roam around as nothing is prohibited, you can walk to the edge of the cliff if you’d like. With Diamond Head, there are fences around to prevent such accidents. Accessibility: Diamond Head Diamond Head is relatively easy to reach from most tourist centers in Oahu. Koko Head awkwardly lies in a random neighborhood and is a bit far out from the city center. From the Waikiki area by local bus, it takes about an hour, but if you’re not cheap like me, you can take a taxi and reach it in half the time. Overall: Koko Head Less people, better view. If you can, do both, but if you have time for one, Koko Head wins every time. |

| title | The Indigenous Black People of Malaysia |
| body | Taman Negara is home to the world’s oldest rainforest, and unknown to many, home to a large number of Malaysia’s indigenous people. Months before my trip to Malaysia, I watched a documentary about the black presence in Asia. I was captivated by the natives of Malaysia. Their short statue, dark pigment, and Afro-textured hair was certainly far from the image I had of a typical Malaysian. I wanted to connect with these indigenous Malaysians and show the world that such people did exist. I was determined to meet them. I booked my bus ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Taman Negara the day before. Getting the ticket was relatively easy. There were several places to purchase the ticket; I opted to get mine at the Hotel Mandarin Pacific for a feeof 75 RM ($16). Getting to Taman Negara however, was not a straight shot; from KL I was dropped off at a small town called Jerantut, which was 3 and a half hours away, and from there, I took a shuttle bus to Kuala Tembeling jetty. When I arrived at the jetty I hopped onto a motorized boat headed for Taman Negara, which took 3 hours. The ride was scenic, but entirely too long for a boat ride. Luckily, I had my headphones and a full battery on my phone to listen to a few podcasts to pass the time. Taman Negara itself was beautiful; it was cool, calm, and lush. Due to my late arrival I was unable to see the natives so I grabbed a bite to eat at one of the many floating restaurants. I ordered freshly caught fish from the river and washed it down with a beer as I sat gazing at the scenic views that lay before my eyes. The next morning, I started the day off with honey and cheese roti and a cup of hot tea. After breakfast I took the boat and set off to the see the indigenous people. After a 15-minute ride or so I finally arrived. I felt a sense of relief and accomplishment. My first impression was “Wow, this is like some National Geographic type stuff, bamboo homes with no modern technology.” The atmosphere was peaceful however; the natives seemed very content with their life. I was well received by the children; their big smiles made me feel at ease. The elder of this particular village greeted me, and he immediately gave me a tour of the village. Here, I learned how to make fire and their method of catching food. Although I could not communicate with the elder, I enjoyed his company; though his body language and smile, I could sense that I was welcomed. Through my bilingual guide, I asked the elder a series of questions about life in the village and learned more about their ways. At the time, my mind could not process how one could enjoy life without the luxuries of modern technology. The more I observed the village, the more I realized that happiness isn’t predicated on material goods or wealth. Here was a group of people that did not have to worry about taxes, mortgages, or paying bills; they lived in tune with nature and enjoyed life to the fullest. I soon realized that this was the true meaning of life. After an hour or so, I parted ways with the villagers and made my way back onto the boat. On the ride home I was overcome with a sense of happiness. At last, I finally made it. To think that a guy from a small town in the U.S. was able to connect with some indigenous Malaysians in an isolated jungle was truly humbling and inspiring. |

| title | What you need to climb Mt. Fuji |
| body | There are some essentials needed to climb Mt. Fuji, and it does require paying a bit of extra cash, but if you don’t already have the gear. 1) Raincoat/rain resistant light jacket: Chances are you will experience some rain as you approach the top, even if the forecast says otherwise. With the low temperature, you don’t want to risk being caught in the rain without proper clothing. 2) Hiking pants: Sweat pants or jeans will not cut it, you need breathable pants that are rain resistant as well. 3) Heavy Hiking boots. You’ll be stepping on rocks the entire time, you’ll need proper shoes. 4) Bookbag with rain cover, the beginning and ending of the hike will be considerably warmer, you’ll need to bring a change of clothes. 5) Water and food! Prices at the summit are ridiculously high, unless you want to pay double the price, I suggest you bring your own water and snacks for the journey. Hiking clothes are pretty expensive, expect to pay over $350 for everything. You can easily rent clothing before you hike by visiting one of many shops in Tokyo or ordering online. It’s a little pricey, but a cheaper option if you don’t think you’ll ever wear hiking clothes again. I rented shoes in Tokyo before I went for about 3500 yen and I dropped them off at the company at the summit after I finished, all I had to do was place them back in the bag and hand them off. Now, you are ready to hike Mt. Fuji! |

| title | Guide to Visiting the Gobi Desert in Mongolia |
| body | If you’re visiting Mongolia, it is likely that you’ll want to visit the Gobi Desert and rightfully so. Getting to the Gobi can simply be broken down into two methods: Organizing and trip through a tour guide (hotel) and going by yourself. Unless you have your own vehicle and are permitted to drive in Mongolia, and are a master of navigation, you’ll mostly likely be opting for the tour. There are a number of tour companies operating in Mongolia so your options are endless. I booked a 6 day tour with Sun Path Guesthouse, which was an excellent choice (regarded as the best among travelers). For my 6-day journey, I paid $360 total, but a $100 deposit was required before the actual trip so $260 on arrival. I heard stories of travelers paying less, but seeing how my van only had 3 travelers total (including myself) instead of the normal 4-6 I raised no objections. Contrary to what most people may believe, you’ll be spending a large portion of your day in the van driving to the sites, each day we spent at least 4 hours driving on roads so bumpy that it makes sleeping such a difficult task. On the bright side, the views along the way are incredible. What to bring to the Gobi Desert? The Gobi is one of the most isolated regions on earth so it’s best to prepare early. On the day you depart, the driver will drive you to a rather large supermarket where you’ll be able to purchase food, toiletries, and other goods for the journey. There will be an opportunity to visit one other supermarket in the Gobi, but these supermarkets will have a fraction of the goods of the first supermarket (refrigerated goods, western brands, etc) so I advise you buy what you need day 1. 10 items you’ll need in the Gobi 1) Spare camera batteries! There is no opportunity to charge your camera in the Gobi. Mongolia is beautiful. There are endless possibilities for photos. The last thing you want is a dead battery in front of the scenic landscapes of the Gobi. For my Nikon D3200, I brought 4 spares for the 6-day journey, which was just enough. 2) Wet wipes/toilet paper. You’ll be using Mongolian style toilets (hole) without toilet paper or water. 3) More wet wipes. There is no possibility to shower in the Gobi. Unless you enjoy smelling like a Viking, I’d suggest buying at least two packs of wet wipes. 4) Portable mobile charger. Again, there is no possibility to charge your electronics in the Gobi so it’s vital you have a charger, especially if you’re addicted to music like me. I needed my iPhone for music during the 4+ hour daily rides! 5) Sauce. Yes, sauce. Some of the food lacks seasoning, but with a dash of BBQ sauce…bam! A1. 6) Alcohol. I’m not a big drinker myself, but alcohol definitely comes in handy in the Gobi. Every night, you’ll be at a ger camp with other tourists with very little to do. Why not drink and enjoy the sunset together? 7) Hat/sunscreen. It’s hot…unless you’re in Mongolia during the winter (bad idea). 8) A book. The car rides are long. You’ll need entertainment. 9) Toothbrush/toothpaste. You’ll be surprised how many people forget this. 10) Variety of clothes. T-shirt, jacket, etc. Depending on when you go, the weather can be very unpredictable. I visited at the tail end of May and experienced temperatures ranging from 60F/16C to 95F/35C. I thought the amount of water allocated to us and food portions was more than enough so I did not list them. You’ll receive about 1.5 liters a day, but in reality, you’ll get more if you want. The food, in my opinion, wasn’t too bad and very filling. No need to waste money on a bunch of snacks you’ll most likely will not finish (my mistake). |

I’m not a big drinker myself, but alcohol definitely comes in handy in the Gobi. Every night, you’ll be at a ger camp with other tourists with very little to do. Why not drink and enjoy the sunset together? \n7)\tHat/sunscreen. It’s hot…unless you’re in Mongolia during the winter (bad idea). \n8)\tA book. The car rides are long. You’ll need entertainment. \n9)\tToothbrush/toothpaste. You’ll be surprised how many people forget this. \n10)\t Variety of clothes. T-shirt, jacket, etc. Depending on when you go, the weather can be very unpredictable. I visited at the tail end of May and experienced temperatures ranging from 60F/16C to 95F/35C. \n\nI thought the amount of water allocated to us and food portions was more than enough so I did not list them. You’ll receive about 1.5 liters a day, but in reality, you’ll get more if you want. The food, in my opinion, wasn’t too bad and very filling. No need to waste money on a bunch of snacks you’ll most likely will not finish (my mistake). \n",

| title | The Indigenous Black People of Malaysia |
| body | Taman Negara is home to the world’s oldest rainforest, and unknown to many, home to a large number of Malaysia’s indigenous people. |
