      "body": "The staffing industry contributes to over $400 billion globally in revenue. This means that staffing companies made that much money in revenue. Just US alone is a $130 billion industry. That's over a quarter of the total revenue.\n\nWhen Dr. King created the civil rights movement it didn't happen overnight. Nothing great or big happens overnight. Why am I talking about the civil rights movement? Because a lot of people want change in the hiring process and they want change this yesterday.\n\n\"It should have already happened.\" I hear this all the time. Should it have? Maybe. But changing the way people hire is comparable to turning the Titanic around. It will take time to move it around.\n\nIn the last decade we have seen the \"iceberg\" and a lot of companies have started to push the Titanic around. It only has moved a foot though.\n\nWhen you think about big staffing companies that have been around for over 50 years and say \"they are going to go out of business soon\" is similar to saying Microsoft is going out of business soon. It's not going to happen.\n\nNow you might say, \"well that's what Blockbuster thought too.\" Yeah but Blockbuster didn't stay with the times. These companies are constantly evolving based on the trends.\n\nDo these companies need to change the way they treat their employees and candidates? Sure, but it's not going to happen overnight.\n\nWhen I started working for one of the largest staffing company in the industry my training consisted of people constantly telling me we are in business of humans. We work with people's livelihood. We make a mistake in making the wrong match and we have messed with someone's ability to put food on their table. What the people in individual offices did is a different story.\n\nIs the revolution coming? No, that's because it's already happening. You are only hearing about it now because it's at the height of the \"revolution\"\n\nThe hiring process will always change and evolve, because it is based on humans and we constantly change and evolve.",

      "body": "I often see candidates talk about how they should be hired for their skills and nothing else. This makes me question, are we “humans” just our “skills?” There is so much more to us, and what makes us a good employee or a partner at work.\n\nI think the space they are coming from is biases. They don’t want to be judged by their race, religion, gender, etc. Which is a fair point. For a long time, people have been discriminated against.\n\nNo one should be disqualified on the basis of what they look like or what gender they are or what their preferences in their personal lives are.\n\nBut, don’t we all have our own biases? We view life from our own perception filters.\n\nWhen you go to interview, don’t you sub-consciously judge the environment, the interviewer, the receptionist? Let me answer before you say no, yes you do. We might not realize it, but we do.\n\nTo judge is to human. It’s part of what makes us different from other species. To make assessments based on our surroundings and past experience.\n\nOur personal biases stem from our past experiences. We judge things based on what happened to us before.\n\nA new recruiter calls you, you don’t want to talk to them because she reminds you of your ex or the recruiter who wronged you. New manager shows similar traits as the old one who was Hitler in suit. You will be weary.\n\nIt’s like dating, when your new love prospect looks like your abusive ex, you will steer clear. It’s the same way the employer judges you. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad.\n\nYou like sticking to yourself all the time, even though the company you are interviewing with go to happy hour and lunches regularly. You will feel like a fish out of water. You can try to adjust, but you will be miserable in a few months.\n\nThe company thrives in new ideas, but you like sticking to your work and given the project. This is not a match made in heaven.\n\nI ask candidates and peers this one question. “What do you do in your spare time?” and “Do you read? If so, what’s your genre?”\n\nThese questions tell me a few things, what you are passionate about. What do you really do when you aren’t forced in this social construct of working to live and living to work.\n\nThe book question tells me whether we have something in common. If you don’t read, that’s fine, I have other interests that I ask about. People need to have things in common if you are going to create meaningful relationships.\n\nI know how it feels to not have a job and be unemployed. Not have an income.\n\nI have taken jobs where it turned out to be a disaster  because I was desperate. They low-balled me by 11k/year. That was a lot of money, but I still took it. Because I needed a job and I was running out of money.  It was as I mentioned a disaster.\n\nBeing judged doesn’t sound all that fun, until we realize that we do it to others too. It’s a circle of life.\n\nSo next time you are interviewing, make sure to consciously judge your next employer and manager. You need to know this is the right fit.",

Most of it involves sitting at our desks, playing video games, watching TV shows or reading books.\n\nWe are both introvert by nature and talking to people always seems exhausting. You have to put energy into someone else? WHATTT? What is this hell?\n\nBut for the most part staying at home and doing nothing always sounds wonderful.
