      "body": "Where is the state of media today? \n\nThe Internet is a naturally decentralizing force. First, it released the centralized chokepoints in content creation and physical distribution that had been so lucrative for both sides of our business. After this, creators thought they’d be better off, free from aggregators, with a direct channel to monetize their work.  Decades into this shift, bloggers, musicians, studios, journalists painfully realized that this was a broken promise: they merely traded one set of aggregators for another.\n\n  ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZrhPRaPykMTETWhdhT8h3zmqQMVt6NbYofipkqAemVtf/image.png)\n\nThese new aggregators’ used compelling user experiences to drive network effects, attract massive user bases, commoditize content suppliers, and create unfair advantages in capital and talent. It may shift the pendulum back toward the creators. One of our portfolio companies, YouNow, is a canary in the coalmine of this shift.\nThey are a pioneering livestreaming app with millions of monthly unique users. Annually, their users micro-tip influencers millions of dollars of digital goods, called bars. \n\n ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSkxqKWHBNtyGJRv4Ngq4Qto1GTpzJET4PFDAfRJ5AZ8C/image.png)\n\nBut, there were three problems with the YouNow model:\n\n1)\tTalent Lock-In: Most popular creators wanted equity for their contributions, not just a monthly check, and when YouNow couldn’t give it, they would leave the platform for better-resourced YouTube, Musical.ly and other livestreaming platforms. Growth stalled.\n\n2)\tTax Collector: Like other social networks, a significant portion of the economics, up to $0.40 on every dollar went to the network operator\n\n3)\tClone-prone: Periscope and Twitch launched tipping; FB and Musically launched livestreaming. YouNow was unable to keep up with the technical resources of the new aggregators\n\nFacing these headwinds, YouNow decided to borrow a powerful idea from bitcoin: Cryptoeconomic Incentives. \nThink of bitcoin as an incentive machine. Bitcoin is the native currency to a p2p, open-source payments app that runs on a network of decentralized computers. It comes with an unhackable accounting ledger for its transactions called blockchain. This network of computers, known as miners, contribute compute power to solve complex equations, validating transactions on the blockchain. Think of this like a global network of notaries that compete to validate transactions.  \n\nEvery 10 minutes, miners compete to add a block for 12.5 BTC (currently ~$200,000), that’s much better return on one’s time than HQ.  Also, as seen here, early participation is encouraged as rewards decline over time. Since 2009, millions have miners have joined the network and earned billions in bitcoin for their contributions and, by the way, there is no one in charge of this scheme. It’s just code.\n \nSo, late last year, YouNow built a new platform called PROPS. Think of PROPS like a rewards engine that transparently and algorithmically compensates contributors to the network.
