The latest Netflix release from Mzansi is called Dead Places, a terrifying horror TV show with very distinct African roots.\n\n\n#  Africa the dark land of myths\nAfrica is a land of myths and it was only going to be a matter of time before someone made a hit show about it all. Growing up in rural Zimbabwe I spend my childhood at the deep end of African lore and superstition. The myths are so overpowering the bulk of people in my life consider them to be fact and abide by them.\n\nIt ranges from the simple warning that your finger will fall off if you point it at a graveyard to the more elaborate ones explaining what you say when picking up wild fruit at a sacred site-there are a lot of sacred forests in the Eastern Highlands.\n\nThere are terrible consequences for disobedience the elders would always remind us. You don’t want to end up like the Masaya children who didn’t listen and ended up disappearing in the mountains of Nyanga never to be seen again. We lived in the shadow of that mountain and I would always look up at the mountain half expecting it to jump at us.\n\nIt never did. Not even when we, my brother and I, grew up and started to tentatively test the limits of its power by hurling obscenities as we complained about the disgusting taste of the sugar plums that graced its foot. Nothing happened to us; it was all a lie. Either that or the ancestors were just being kind. They do say something about big snakes not eating themselves after all. Now there’s a hilarious image I cannot put out of my head.\n\n# Tragic arc\n\nThe main actor’s sister was not so lucky in this story. They tempted fate and fate snapped back by snatching her. Anguished the main actor who is born of a Nigerian mother and South African father leaves home to live in the UK. Here is a funny aside, Anthony Oseyemi, who is the main actor has a South African and Nigerian parents and grew up in the UK. It’s a happy coincidence that enhances the show.\n\nUnlike traditional (stupid) horrors like Wrong Turn which rely on the grotesque to create a horror feel, Dead Places likes to tug and pull at those fears at the back of your mind. It blows at the embers of those traditional African myths till there are raging fires that leave you doubting your sense of established self. What if? What if there is truth it to it all. It doesn’t even bother to offer lasting solutions to the questions and monsters it rouses. Like a rampaging bull trashing through the maize fields it soldiers on to the very end without bothering to explain itself.In the end, it comes to a shocking conclusion. \n\nThe worst monsters, as it turns out, are not hiding in mythical shadows-they are made of flesh and blood.",

God knows how many time loop movies and TV shows I have had to watch in recent years but they are a lot. They range from unstimulating to scintillating. Two Distant Strangers is definitely in the latter column, it makes you take a pause and think.\n The plot is simple enough, the protagonist, a black man in today’s racist America, just had a one night stand which he has managed to turn into another date, steps out into the world as he embarks on a journey back to his apartment, where his dog is waiting for him. No matter what he does he keeps dying in police custody.\n It’s a fate he cannot seem to escape no matter what he does and in this 30 minute movie he tries everything including running away in the opposite direction, raising his hands to show he is not a threat, cooperating with the police, talking to the officer and actually asking him to give him a ride. Each time he ends up dead anyway much to his frustration.\n The movie is a not so subtle vignette on the everyday death of black American males at the hands of the police in that country. It’s just something that keeps happening no matter what they do. Before the advent of social media, such deaths would go unnoticed and more often than not, the police’s version that the suspect had somehow done something to bring about their own deaths was readily accepted by juries, prosecutors and the wider public.\n It’s a narrative that has been exposed as mere fiction on more than one occasion in the age of prevalent video. The latest controversial and widely reported killing was in Minnesota when an officer allegedly mistakenly killed a black suspect by shooting once. The officer says she meant to use a taser.\n Statistics have also shown that black men are more likely to be stopped by the police for dubious reasons, a point the movie emphasises. They are also more likely to be perceived as a threat and be on the receiving end of excessive police force.\n One can easily draw comparisons with how white people are treated with kid gloves by the police. Perpetrators of mass shootings and killings, another common American occurrence, are mostly white men. They often get arrested without being fatally shot despite the fact that they would be armed. The words terrorist or thug are often never used in relation to such incidents with the media and police preferring to refer to mental health by default.\n ## The stuff made for Oscars and to be enjoyed\n Two Distant Strangers has already been nominated for this year’s Oscars. What makes it a rare piece of gold is not just the compelling moral narrative or the comedy-wrapped anguish, rather it’s the fact that the movie does not waste its breath with sideshows. The producers and actors had a story to tell, they told it in the shortest time possible (30 minutes) and when they were done the credits roll.\n There are no meandering scenes with sombre background music meant to tug at the strings of your heart. No cinematic shots of the author lying down dead either. Once it’s clear the man is dead the movie cuts back to his bed and the day begins again. It’s a movie made to win an Oscar, tell a story and be enjoyed.",

Bridgerton is based on a series of books by the same title written by Julie Cotler under the pen name of Julia Quinn. Each book in this series tends to focus on each sibling and the next one focuses on Anthony Bridgerton. This simply means there is just no role for Regé-Jean Page here.Below are the list of books that make up the Bridgerton series and the date when it was published in brackets:\n\n- The Duke and I (2000)\n- The Viscount Who Loved Me (2000)\n- An Offer From a Gentleman (2001)\n- Romancing Mister Bridgerton (2002)\n- To Sir Phillip, With Love (2003)\n- When He Was Wicked (2004)\n- It’s In His Kiss (2005)\n- On the Way to the Wedding (2006)\n- The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After (2013)\n\nThis is a romance series so, chances are that those who loved the series will still get more of the same in the next coming Bridgerton season, it will just be without the Duke of Hastings. She is the one who introduced us to the raw talent that is Mr Page and she has a reputation for unconventionally casting people of colour in roles traditionally reserved for white people so expect another surprise.\n\nAs for the Duke, well his time is up and hopefully he will come back in time. In the meantime you can read the book and spoil future seasons of the show for yourself.",

They tried to sneak in two malicious commits but alert devs thwarted the attempts. It’s not clear who wanted to do this.\n\n## What is PHP?\n\nPHP is a popular scripting language that powers as much as [80% of the internet’s websites](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiYy4Op8dfvAhWKZMAKHQfqDk8QFjAFegQICBAD&url=https%3A%2F%2Fkinsta.com%2Fblog%2Fis-php-dead%2F%23%3A~%3Atext%3DAccording%2520to%2520W3Techs%27%2520data%252C%2520PHP%2Cleads%2520us%2520to%2520this%2520fact%25E2%2580%25A6&usg=AOvVaw313Kixm-pMqGdYNeORCnPo). It’s not exactly as sexy or trendy as JavaScript, and it’s many libraries or Python, and the fancy AI it uses but sits hidden behind the scenes quietly doing the Lord’s work. Techzim and all the news sites and blogs you know for example are built using WordPress and PHP.\n\nThis makes the PHP project, which makes the server interpreter that runs this software, an important scalp. Their wider usage dwarfs that of Solar Winds which was leveraged by unknown hackers last year to do extensive breaches into the US government’s and a host of other companies’ servers.\n\nIf a hacker manages to sneak in malicious code into the PHP interpreter the world becomes their oyster, the damage they can do is incalculable. They would be able to get into pretty much any network on earth including big companies like Apple, Google. The value of such a coup would be worth billions-possibly more.\n\n## How the breach happened\n\nIt’s not clear how this happened, but those who run the PHP project suspect the hackers got into the project by hacking into the server on which the PHP project is hosted. They then attempted to sneak in their malicious code by impersonating some respected members of the PHP contributor community and attempting to disguise their code commits as minor “typo” fixes.\n\nThe PHP project was using its own private server to host the project but after the breach, they have decided to switch over to Microsoft owned GitHub. They already use a piece of software known as Git to keep track of changes made to the PHP software, so the switch to GitHub will have minimum impact, but it will enhance security.\n\n## FOSS vigilance killed the breach in it’s crib\n\nPHP is Free and Open Source Software which is also widely developed and reviewed, so it’s unlikely this breach was ever going to work, and it seems whoever did this had a feeling but they tried anyway. The malicious code is not even disguised maybe somebody just wanted to see how long it would take people to identify the code.\n\nHowever, even such unsophisticated breaches can be leveraged to do widespread damage as illustrated in the Solar Winds attack. It’s possible that a badly secured server was easily breached as part of the attack vector. In the end substantial damage was done.\n\nIn this case the attack took place in public view there was slim chance of the attacker getting away with it. Using Git you can easily tell which lines of code have been added/changed or deleted. Not even trusted members of the community can circumvent that. What if one of them was paid by a malicious actor to sneak it a backdoor? Paranoia drives the FOSS community and the feeble commit was rolled back quickly. The malicious actor attempted to reintroduce the back door again.\n\n## Nothing to worry about\n\nUltimately the attack ended before it even began if we can even call it an attack. However, the whole incident highlights the value of FOSS. It also shows how you need to be vigilant with every piece of software you deploy as an organisation. Every mundane thing you install can be turned into a weapon.\n\nYou need to guard your security jealously and make sure you do your own audits. Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s safe. It actually means that it’s a potential target-a very valuable potential target.",

Some people I’ve talked to said they enjoy it while I on the other hand felt the show took a nosedive after the 4th season. Whatever the opinion is on the show it looks like HBO is still looking to milk as much out of it as it can after news that the author of the Game of Thrones book series (A Song of Ice and Fire) George R.R. Martin signed a five-year, eight-figure deal with HBO.\n\nThe deal according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter is to develop shows exclusively for HBO Max. News of the deal also comes after a number of Game of Thrones spinoffs were said to be in various stages of production. The one that has been given the go-ahead is the House of Dragons. The show is set three centuries before the events of Game of Thrones and takes a deeper look at House Targaryen in the days when they ruled Westeros.\n\nThe show will eventually lead into the Targaryen Civil War (Dance of Dragons) where everything started to go pear-shaped for House Targaryen. Other shows in developed are centred around:\n- The King’s Landing slum of Flea Bottom.\n- George R.R. Martin’s most popular novellas The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight.\n- The ancestors of House Martell set a millennium before the events of Game of Thrones.\n- The Sea Snake or the Head of House Velaryon, Lord Corlys.\n- Lastly an animated series that has no known working title or subject.\n\nApart from the projects that have been mentioned it is unclear which of the ones under this new deal between Martin and HBO will be connected to Game of Thrones.
