body![Career.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmVu8TwETtM8LeG2gbHJ9hhgrWbsTemPo9Dqtq9t7uLir9/Career.jpg) Do you ever get that gut-wrenching feeling when you reflect on things in the past that didn’t quite work out? Maybe it was the “one that got away,”, an exam that you should have aced but didn’t, or perhaps, THE career opportunity that slipped away. You walk home with a heavy heart, your head down, feeling defeated, rejected, and simply gutted. But as the saying goes – what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger – so it’s important to digest these experiences and reflect on the good that comes out of the bad. This is especially important when it comes down to deciding on one’s career path. In today’s world, the whole job searching process can seem defeating with time-consuming applications, online tests, interviews, networking events, internships and so forth. But the main thing is to evaluate the key things are that you hope to receive. Right now, for example, in your current circumstance, are you learning every day? Are your day-to-day responsibilities reflective of the amount of time and effort you’ve spent on doing them? And if you meet amazing people that you consider to be role models or “gurus” in their respective fields, what are you doing to make sure that you maximise the opportunity to benefit from the time you spend with them? It’s easy for us to forget about the excitement of day one in the new job only to find ourselves feeling bored and “stuck in the rut,” followed by moving onto new and better things only with the focus of improving our salary package. Wouldn’t it be better to focus on working in an industry or environment that you’re passionate about and letting your skills develop to the point where you are remunerated for your unquestionable value? How will you feel about your career path when you look back years from today? Will you remember the failures? Will you only remember the successes? Will you remember the colleagues that you worked with? For most of us, it’s the holistic experience that determines what we do next and how our career path is ultimately shaped. An example of this was when I got a job working as a Consultant at a Management Consultancy firm. I was over the moon when they offered me the position. Truth be told, it didn’t take me long to work out that I wasn’t a perfect fit in the company. I remained optimistic, though, that if I focused on smaller objectives, my contribution would make the experience mutually rewarding. Before too long, I came to realise that it’s not really in anyone’s interests to drag something out when I could potentially be much happier elsewhere. So, I evaluated my options. I had a few choices: 1) Moan and groan about my situation to anyone what would listen, 2) Be thankful that I was employed and continue to work hard in an environment that I didn’t feel valued in, or 3) Be proactive and seek other opportunities that are well suited for my skillset. If you are determined to do something, you need to believe in making it happen. For those of you that know me, it’s probably not surprising that I went for option 3. It made sense because I’ve always had a passion for entrepreneurship, change management and numbers. Within a small organisation, you’re able to see real differences to what happens when you make good (and the occasional bad) decisions in my current role as a Commercial Manager. I’m sure that this move is one of the more rational ones that I’ve made in my career so far. However, not all my future decision-making will be so clear. The way that I see it is that I’m an MBA qualified Commercial Manager with experience in the energy, defence, financial services, and public sectors. My thought process is that I’m 37 years old and the last thing I want in the future is regret. I've seen it so often, so over the next few years I’m going to take as many (rational and calculated) career risk as possible. I’ll be spending my time on projects and entrepreneurial ventures I’m passionate about. If it works out, great. If it doesn’t, then I’ll have 38 years to find a ‘good’ job and ‘make it.’ Fulfilment and happiness are key in everything that you do, so continue the exciting journey that you’re embarking on and make the most of it – after all, you’re in the driver’s seat of your own destiny.

titleWhat is GDPR and do I really need to do anything?
bodyYou may have recently gotten an influx of emails from your mobile phone provider or your favourite online shopping stores about changes to their data protection policies and how they affect you. Or you may have seen posters plastered around the workplace about being GDPR compliant before May 25th. As someone who works in the online security industry, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the complex matter of GDPR by breaking it down into more manageable chunks in the hope that it helps readers gain a better understanding of this regulation. So, what’s all the fuss about? Surely this isn’t that big of a deal? And what’s the worst that can happen if I don’t comply? These are typical reactions when business owners and senior managers first encounter GDPR, or General Data Protection Regulations. Simply put, GDPR comes into effect on the 25th of May this year, and all Member States have been given a 2-year period to implement this into national law since ratification by the European Union in April 2016. THE WHAT: Fundamentally this new regulation focuses on how companies manage their customer data, and it’s worth spending a few minutes to consider what constitute customer data. The data relate to any persons who can be identified directly or indirectly. While this may seem straight forward, this includes online identifiers, IP addresses and cookies (no, not the edible kind). Indirect information includes anything that can be linked back to a specific individual, so this is inclusive of physical, psychological, genetic, mental, economic, cultural and social identities. THE WHO: Well, consent must be clear and affirmative, and you must have means of demonstrating that consent is given. Silence of inactivity does not constitute consent. Simply put, written consent must be clear, intelligible, and easily accessible; otherwise it is not binding. However, it’s not quite that simple as special conditions apply to those under the age of 16. This can be problematic for organisations as, if needed, they may have to update consent language and processes for obtaining consent from children. In addition to this, they may have to create processes to capture parental consent. Is this something that your business is prepared for? Explicit consent must be given for processing sensitive personal data such as race, ethnic origin and gender. And this doesn’t just apply to the data that you hold – you must also consider the data that third parties that you’re working with are holding. As part of this exercise, it’s important to update all third-party contracts where part of this process will involve identifying all contractor relationships that require agreement revisions and updates accordingly. In addition, you must verify that third-party contractors can comply with GDPR privacy by design requirements. THE WHY: The good news is that there are benefits that come with the introduction of GDPR being. It goes without saying that this is the biggest revamp in worldwide privacy rules since the min-1990s. GDPR will also bring uniformity to the way we think about data by having one single set of data protection rules throughout Europe. Because GDPR introduces better inspection and validation of stored customer data, this should result in companies having better engagement with their customers as only those who wish to be activity engaged with. More simply, individuals will have better control over who has the legal right to hold their personal data. There are a number of consequences if GDPR isn’t implemented correctly. For example, the application of penalties for those organisations that cannot demonstrate legal justification for processing and holding data, or violations in terms of record keeping, can result in a fine up to 10 million Euros or 2% of gross global turnover of the preceding financial year. If you think that’s bad, this can be doubled for violations relating to lack of consent, data subject rights or cross-border data transfer! THE HOW: To become compliant businesses must look to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures in relation to the nature, scope, context and purposes of handling and processing of personal data. Data protection safeguards must be designed into products and services from the earliest stages of development; this includes 1) the encryption of personal data, 2) ensuring confidentiality, integrity, availability and resilience of systems, 3) restoring the availability of, and access to, data in a timely manner following a technical incident, 4) introducing a process for regular testing and 5) assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of these systems. Furthermore, data obtained must be for specific, explicit and legitimate purposes, individuals must be able to withdraw this consent at any time and have the right to be forgotten and if the data is no longer required for the reasons it was collected, it must be erased. The good news is that some of these requirements are relatively easy to fulfil; however, the key thing is to take actions and to not hide under the radar in the hope that you won’t get noticed. Penalties will apply to organisations that try to get away with it – so make sure you’re not one of them and become GDPR compliant, today. ![GDPR.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQFaDYTCJYFBDYKBjjitcungNqxusG8JUvixFV7u3svQW/GDPR.jpg)

titleA Retrospective View of Political Chairmanship
bodyI was doing a bit of research online and came across a report by Alvarez & Marsal titled “What Makes an Exceptional Chairman? Required Qualities for Challenging Times.” The report is based on the collective insights of 22 Chairmen from FTSE 10 and 250 companies who drew their experiences working with over 120 Chairmen in their careers. According to the research, there are eight characteristics that exceptional Chairmen demonstrate throughout their tenure. This got me thinking about my time as Chairman of a local political group in Didcot. As March 31st marked my last day in office, I’d like to share my experiences on what I considered to be one of the most reflective times of my life. I’ll write about how I got into politics in my forthcoming blog, though in short, an unforgettable (and maybe death defying) experience changed my perspective and gave me the strength to seize every opportunity that came my way. May 2014 was when I joined the group as Deputy Chairman for Fundraising and Membership upon meeting like-minded individuals that also wanted to make a positive impact on the upcoming general election the following year. Besides the need to increase membership for the party, one of the most challenging aspects of my role was to field sufficient candidates for the local elections – all 21 of them on the Town Council. I was told that the group has always had this difficulty and seeing the stronghold that the opposition party had at both Town and District levels at the time, I definitely had my work cut out for me. With a stagnant membership and only a handful of candidates willing to stand for election, I needed a strategy, and I needed it fast. I took to social media which many thought was a risky strategy at the time and started asking questions. Treading the waters on Facebook turned out to be one of the best things we could have done. Of course, we weren’t immune to backlash and criticism – after all, political posts always divide the crowd. On the whole, though, the reception was positive and engaging. Month after month we saw more faces through the door of our meeting room, and our meetings became energetic, lively and, well, full! It was rewarding to see such renewed enthusiasm and the growing optimism allowed us to increase our membership level substantially. During this period of growth and transition, we began to witness an evolving culture where members were aligned in terms of attitude, values and beliefs. There was a feeling of anticipation, of good things to come. By March 2015, I was fortunate enough to be promoted to the role of Chairman, supported by two deputy Chairmen who were not only incredibly supportive but also very talented in their respective professions. We had an intelligence officer in the Royal Air Force who oversaw election strategy. We also had an academically gifted researcher who took over from me as the driving force for membership. We began what we called Project Delta, an initiative to field the full set of candidates for all elections. Ambitious? Yes. Possible? Most definitely. Having the support of such capable deputies certainly made the role of Chairman a lot easier and it’s something that I’ll always be very grateful for. Before too long the elections were upon us and the Conservative Party were the only political group in Didcot to put forward the full 21 candidates for election at town level and 8 candidates for election at district level. The end results surpassed all expectations – even the Oxfordshire Guardian said so! It was jubilant, exciting and for myself, relief that Project Delta was a massive success. http://www.oxfordshireguardian.co.uk/tories-devastate-labour-in-town-council-elections/ Reflecting on the successes we had and drawing connections to the aforementioned article, the realisation is that hard work is only half the battle. The key to our success was how smart we worked to make our resources go further. It was about understanding people and the organisation, and how I can get the best out of everyone. It wasn’t always easy – not everyone saw the light at the end of the tunnel at the beginning. But we did it, and we did it with style and intelligence. I learned a huge amount from this ordeal, and whilst at times it was bittersweet and uncertain, I can walk away confidently knowing that I conducted myself with integrity, dignity, and professionalism. I hope to take this experience to better myself, to grow, to stumble, to get up and to do it all over again. I’d like to close in the words of Winston Churchill, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” Ditto. ![Winston-Churchill.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdq3b6FCCnU5itsYf6uGZxHAp3qngd7i96yWtgcJUgHUn/Winston-Churchill.jpg)

titleSwimming against the Tide
bodyCan you learn to become more successful in life by conquering difficult and challenging circumstances? By our very nature, we adapt to our surroundings, but difficulties can start when people stay away from challenging circumstances. For many of us, it is often easier to take the route of least resistance; however, this strategy often leaves us feeling unsatisfied, never knowing whether we have tried our best and what our true potential may be. I’m a firm believer in doing things that are difficult, both physically and mentally. Does it matter if you’re the best? Not in the slightest. The important part is to push your boundaries and to push yourself constantly. Many of us are naturally resistant to trying something new in the fear that we may fail. But remember, you are only as good as your last performance, and overcoming resistance can be fruitful and lead to new opportunities and experiences in your life. I’m a firm believer in having strong work ethics; this is often how I persevere and thrive under challenging circumstances that others may shy away from. I recall a few instances when I set physical challenges that I wasn’t prepared for – did it prevent me from achieving my goals? Not in the slightest – in fact – it motivated me to adopt a “mind over matter” approach to tackling these challenges. Cycling 100 miles in the Prudential Ride London was physically demanding; I remember the feeling of having nothing left in the tank when I hit the 40-mile mark. Should I have stopped and conceded that I wasn’t in good enough shape to continue to the finish line? No, by pushing myself I was able to determine that I’m physically capable of cycling 100 miles. Should I have endured 26 miles of pain in Budapest Marathon? Well, in a word, yes. I’m a firm believer that whilst it may not be easy to see the light at the end of the tunnel, with 80% determination and 20% ability, you can achieve just about anything in life. I remember hearing that the Royal Marines were going to be opening a reservist centre in a neighbouring city and was keen to see if I could get involved. When I discovered that I was too old to join, I was surprised and mortified in equal measure. The easier decision, of course, would have been to forget about it; however, I decided to make enquiries as to what potential opportunities remain open. In the months that followed, I found myself in Army training and making my personal contributions to HM Armed Forces. Was it without issue? No, I remember being involved in a loaded Tactical Advance to Battle (which in retrospective was perhaps beyond my capabilities) and much to the amusement of my fellow comrades, I puked all over the place. Did I stop and think that I had reached my limitation? No, I wiped my face and kept my head up – perhaps that’s the military way! Many people say that it’s the taking part that counts; I disagree though – the point of competing is to finish what you set out to do. But it’s equally important to understand that everything in life is relative, and that there is maybe always someone better. It’s important to take pride in our accomplishments and even more so to never listen to the naysayers. There will always be those who give up too easily and as a result, missing out on great opportunities. Similarly, there are those who understand that every opportunity manifests itself as a learning experience. What’s the worst that could happen? You might make bad acquaintances? You learn that you’re not as good as you originally thought you were? Guess what, lots of other people aren’t “good enough” either, but at least you put your head above the parapet. My general belief is that if you have this discipline to carry you through physically challenge circumstances, you pretty much carry this with you into other areas in life. In a business situation, will you take the easy route and do things half baked? Or will you adapt, become better, take a stance and perform to the best of your ability? By all means, take the route of least resistance and judge for yourself the outcome of your decision. But how will you feel when you look back on your life? Will you feel pleased that you went down the road most travelled? Or would you rather look back on your life and be proud that you’ve surpassed your own expectations and achieved greatness? Opportunities present themselves all the time – the only person that can dictate your decision-making process is you. Remember, other people’s limitations don’t need to become your own. And after all, what would you attempt if you knew you could accept failure? And if not now, when? ![Success.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmX59Z21N9pq42Wz71XrMdRHxj9AM2zxvN8Quq6ZspKW7R/Success.jpg)

titlePerspectives on the Important Things in Life
bodyIn my inaugural blog I wrote about New Year’s Resolutions and goal setting. I thought that it’s only fitting that my second blog should state what my personal aspirations are for the year ahead. It’s worth noting that some of these have been carried forward from 2017 as I think it’s only appropriate that if you set your mind on something you should see it through (even if it’s not to the time scale that you might have liked). Here is my list for 2018 and I’d feel pretty good if I successfully achieve all of them. 1) Keep on track with part-time doctoral research at Cranfield University – using my spare time to be at the forefront of innovative research 2) Convert garage to gym (this is one that I should have completed in 2017) 3) Update blog on monthly basis 4) Go on a hot air balloon trip (another one that I should have completed in 2017) 5) Buy property in Budapest 6) sdnaskcihc (not to be overly cryptic, but this is something that is important to me) 7) Run a marathon (who’s up for it?) 8) Complete triathlon (similarly, who’s up for the challenge?) 9) Hike to the summit of Mont Blanc (hopefully with my colleagues, but if not, I’ll do this as part of my summer break) 10) Take time to enjoy pairings of cheese and wine every month to find out what I enjoy, detest and can tolerate – I’d like to say more than just “notes of raspberry and smoked cedar” But are my ambitions shared with those who have reached the pinnacle of success? Well, the last words of Steve Jobs indicate that he shares some of my philosophies: "I have come to the pinnacle of success in business. In the eyes of others, my life has been the symbol of success. However, apart from work, I have little joy. Finally, my wealth is simply a fact to which I am accustomed. At this time, lying on the hospital bed and remembering all my life, I realize that all the accolades and riches of which I was once so proud, have become insignificant with my imminent death. In the dark, when I look at green lights, of the equipment for artificial respiration and feel the buzz of their mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of my approaching death looming over me. Only now do I understand that once you accumulate enough money for the rest of your life, you have to pursue objectives that are not related to wealth. It should be something more important: For example, stories of love, art, dreams of my childhood. No, stop pursuing wealth, it can only make a person into a twisted being, just like me. God has made us one way, we can feel the love in the heart of each of us, and not illusions built by fame or money, like I made in my life, I cannot take them with me. I can only take with me the memories that were strengthened by love. This is the true wealth that will follow you; will accompany you, he will give strength and light to go ahead. Love can travel thousands of miles and so life has no limits. Move to where you want to go. Strive to reach the goals you want to achieve. Everything is in your heart and in your hands. What is the world's most expensive bed? The hospital bed. You, if you have money, you can hire someone to drive your car, but you cannot hire someone to take your illness that is killing you. Material things lost can be found. But one thing you can never find when you lose: life. Whatever stage of life where we are right now, at the end we will have to face the day when the curtain falls. Please treasure your family love, love for your spouse, love for your friends. Treat everyone well and stay friendly with your neighbours." Steve Jobs was perhaps one of a kind. However, in more general terms, I want to focus on becoming more active, to stop procrastinating and facing the reality that in order to reach my potential I have to work hard, remain focused and never listed to the naysayers. Happiness in my personal life will afford me balance and perspective that I can bring to my professional life. For those of us that aspire to be successful, it’s important to think beyond our current position in life and to spend time doing things that you love and can be proud of. And after all, what would you attempt if you knew you could accept failure? Will you do it now? If not now, when? ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZVDqBxbtBJbXsv58HhzwGNyobymu8b8aQ35rkjfpjZYk/image.png)

It’s worth noting that some of these have been carried forward from 2017 as I think it’s only appropriate that if you set your mind on something you should see it through (even if it’s not to the time scale that you might have liked). titleNew Year’s Resolutions – Setting Achievable Goals (whilst considering the holistic context)
bodyIt’s nearly time for that ‘New Year, New Me’ thing that people try to do at the start of the year, so I thought I’d share my thoughts on goal setting. But before I go any further, I’ll start this off by admitting that I didn’t achieve all the goals that I set in 2017 – this is an important admission. One of the reasons that this is often the case is that many of us set challenging goals without considering the impact that our busy schedules (and lives in general) have on achieving all the things we want at the beginning of every year. In my case, the big difference that prevented me from achieving my resolutions was that I moved from an employment that I wasn’t satisfied with to a much better suited job. This isn’t as negative as it may sound; after all, if you’re unhappy or feel undervalued in your working environment, what are your realistic options? 1) Complain to colleagues 2) Discuss perceived issues with management 3) Proactively seek alternative employment For many people who are looking to change jobs it’s more of a case that they want to feel valued which is completely understandable. In my instance, changing jobs was the best thing that I could have done and one of the better decisions that I have made. My philosophy is to work in an environment that I love and to inspire others to achieve their goals, but it’s important to consider how personal objectives fit into the environment that you’re immediately surrounded by. For example, someone who’s an aspiring musician but working as an engineer may not easily convince their employer that they should be supported in dedicating more time towards improving their aspirations to get their next gig. That makes sense, right? After all, at least most of the time, employers want to see dedication from their employees. This is perhaps the reason that it’s so difficult to make sensible New Year’s Resolutions that will fit in with the rest of your life. But wouldn’t it be nice to set challenges that simply improve your happiness? In theory – yes – however, things aren’t always that simple and at some point, it comes down to priorities. When thinking about New Year’s Resolutions, is it better to have a macro goal such as getting a six pack by June? Or is it better to say that you’ll adopt the following: 1) Eat a maximum of one pre-made meal or takeaway per week 2) Eat meals between an eight-hour period so that your body has longer to digest the food 3) Exercise a minimum of three times per week 4) Focus on achieving a minimum number of quality abdominal exercises when working out Whilst one approach may not work for everyone, by breaking down the goal of getting a 6 pack into more measurable activities, it’s possible to evaluate regular progress rather than facing disappointment further down the line. Saying that, one thing that I should make clear is that I have an interest in business; breaking down complex problems into much smaller manageable chunks is often referred to as Small Win Strategy. Another thing that I’d add to this note is that disappointment and failure play a fundamental part in learning to be successful. I’ll cover this off more in a future blog, but for the time being I’ll simply say that it’s important to surround yourself with good people that you trust, always set incremental objectives, and treat people the way that you’d like to be treated. If you truly get stuck, don’t feel ashamed to ask for help – you’ll be surprised how much help others will give when they know how much it’s appreciated. In conclusion, are you wrong to set goals? Absolutely not, make sensible goals that you feel confident that you can achieve. As you achieve them you’ll build your confidence and perhaps even set more aspirational targets in the future. But whatever you do, don’t listen to the naysayers. Other people’s limitations don’t need to become your own. And after all, what would you attempt if you knew you could accept failure? And if not now, when? ![Elon.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdVSrnCgBgQMoQH34We4p5AKRPpWneMNTEuXkceNN2yGP/Elon.jpg)
