      "body": "This German-designed and engineered collapsible bicycle is perfect for riding around the narrow streets of Japan and for getting between places fast on the trains. The two German designers, Riese und Müller, came together to design probably the best collapsible bike on the market today. At least as far as I am concerned. As of 2010 over 100,000 have been sold. It's probably more around 150,000 as of today with many owners forming a sort of Birdy cult s its been described. Won't get to that point with me since all my bd-1 riding is alone.\n\n![IMG_6257.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXAQZZDUSEcELqVMgTuHxzcuzMUtkFr7iEyvr9CYYvWbR/IMG_6257.jpg)\n\nThe bike when it was first sold in Japan had a tubular frame and was called a \"Birdy.\" Later, the name was changed to \"bd-1\" for sales in Japan, then after a number of years the name was changed back to Birdy. Pacifico Cycles also started manufacturing again the older type Birdy with the tubular frame. Pacific Cycles located in Taiwan is the manufacturer and distributor of the Birdy collapsible bicycles. Was a bit disappointed with the name change from bd-1 to Birdy, however, the quality of the engineering has not been compromised, in fact, after checking Pacifico regularly for updates, improvements continue all the time.\n\nPacific Cycle\nhttp://www.pacific-cycles.com/Birdy\n\nThe bd-1  I ride is a 2012 Standard model.  There were three models available in Japan: Comfort; Standard; Speed. The image below is the Standard bd-1 in black. The bicycle shop where I bought the bd-1 is no longer there so if I need parts or any work done on the bike, need to take to a bike shop further away. This is what the bd-1 looks like when it is collapsed weighing about 21.5kg (47.3 pounds). The Standard has eight gears equipped with a Shimano-Alivio derailleur. The gear arrangement with the smaller 16\" tires with the Shimano-Alivio setup makes for very fast acceleration. \n\nI'm not into the technical details about this bike as I am with the great fun that comes from owning and riding a bike like this. I never went out to buy a bike like this. In fact, never planned on buying one until a friend introduced me to these bikes and let me ride his bd-1 Standard in graphite color. As soon as I got on it an accelerated down the road I knew I wanted one.\n\n![IMG_2926.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXTnqe6vj8DN4zeNkNKQsZxfsHDZbH5ChxJbV76AykLLM/IMG_2926.jpg)\n\nThe bd-1 is a single all aluminum welded frame with a rather hard front and back suspension system. I had the suspension modified when I purchased the bike for a harder ride. When the tires are inflated to their recommended 90psi, and with the shock system equipped on this bd-1, it makes for a rigid but fast ride. In some of the older models cracks started appearing in the upper steering stem where the handle bars are attached. I think Pacifico has modified this.  The stem is aluminum and the handle bar attachment is steel with steel Allen bolts. It might be that if those steel Allen bolts are too tight, the stress might be causing the cracks. I loosened the Allen bolts which might reduce the chances of fracturing on the upper stem.\n\nLet's get to the fun. I have been all over Tokyo including where I live in this part of Japan and up into a lot of hills. Used to have a blog where I posted almost daily images of the bd-1 and scenery as well as commentary about my experiences along the way.  There are bike paths believe it or not considering how narrow the streets are, all over the area where I live and have rode the bd-1 on them frequently. Many major thoroughfares are also clearly marked for bicycle traffic which obviously makes for safer riding. There are some back roads here I can get to on the bd-1 doing a lot of riding to places most people hardly ever get to see if traveling by car or on the trains. Since I am fortunate to live three minutes from a large river close to hills on the very western fridge of Tokyo, I spend a lot of time at the river working out and bicycling up and down the hills in the area. The Shimano-Alivio system shifts up and down the gears with remarkable smoothness. I've taken the bd-1 over rocks along the river bank and it shifted when I expected it to and the frame as rigid as the ride is with the suspension, navigated around rocks with ease. These Birdy bicycles are not cheap. This one ran me around $1370 in 2012. Four years later and pretty much the same set up runs about $1900. Some go even higher well over $2,500 depending on components and modifications. The sort of off orange Birdy standing in back of my bd-1 runs for $7,000 at a bike shop here in Tokyo. We took the train then rode from the station to the This Birdy is completely modified with custom parts but is this ever a beautiful bike. Not certain the disk brakes are all that required. They seem more of a marketing gimmick than anything else to ask higher prices.
