Advertisers are always looking for new, loyal audiences, which influencers are especially good at building. Zane McIntyre explores.\n\nWithout an accurate way to set and measure your campaign goals, brands risk throwing their hard-earned marketing dollars down the drain on the wrong campaign. Or perhaps pushing a high-performing influencer away with the wrong approach. \n\nIn order for a campaign to succeed, both advertiser and publisher must remain laser-focussed on their goals. This should go beyond mere vanity metrics. Affiliate marketing can help by providing a consistent way to get clear about the campaign’s goals, gather data, and measure results. \n\nInfluencers and accurate data can go hand in hand\nThe first step towards a strong, clearly-defined campaign is to get clear on your goals. Then develop an understanding of how to accurately measure those goals. Unwieldy agreements based on influencers manually reporting their own performance data to brands can be inaccurate. Affiliate platforms can help provide more transparency between the influencer and the brand by automating reports backed by verifiable data.\n\nThe data provided by affiliate campaigns also allows for clear goal and KPI setting. This is based on a foundation of open communication and mutual trust. Advertisers are able to provide a better understanding of the campaign’s measurable KPIs such as clicks and conversions. It can serve to be much more accurate instead of relying on vanity metrics alone. \n\nOnce these clear KPIs are shared with the influencer, they will be able to adjust their content accordingly with the brand’s goals in mind. If your goal is to promote sign ups to your newsletter, the influencer might help by generating a sense of ‘fomo’ in their loyal audience, compelling them to sign up. If you want to increase sales, the influencer can adapt their content around specific hero products. \n\nFor example, Commission Factory recently introduced Instagram influencers Eating Up With the Hannashians to ready meal delivery business My Muscle Chef. There was a clear synergy between brand and influencer, since Eating Up With the Hannashians regularly post video reviews of trending snacks and meals from local Australian grocery stores.\n\nMuscle Chef’s goals for the ‘A Week with My Muscle Chef’ campaign were to trial an outside the box campaign. It looked to use an affiliate space, partner with an affiliate in the social vertical to deliver results. These are results are  comparable to in-house My Muscle Chef brand ambassadors. They increased their affiliate program’s overall revenue by 20 percent quarter on quarter. The campaign eventually contributed to a 33.55 percent quarter-on-quarter uplift of sales revenue on the affiliate program for the brand.\n\nTracking channel agnostic campaigns\nAffiliate marketing provides a more well-rounded way to measure campaign success, without relying on rigid, channel-specific metrics. Clickless affiliate codes, for example, are a great way for both brands and influencers to create a campaign that goes beyond a single channel. \n\nIn the past, marketers found it difficult to properly track a publisher’s influence from affiliate links alone. This is because some customers ended up visiting the merchant’s website without the all-important click. Then influencers or publishers generating the buzz wasn’t being properly compensated. Aside from this, marketers weren’t able to accurately measure the effect of their affiliate campaign. These links also limit where the campaign could be shared, ruling out print, television, and some social media channels.\n\nClickless affiliate codes ensure campaign performance is tracked and attributed to the correct person. They aren’t limited to a specific channel or campaign. It doesn’t matter where the consumer has come from. It’s also a useful solution for influencers. Those who want to be rewarded for proving their wide-range of influence across multi-channels.\n\nDon’t be afraid to get agile\nBeing agile is extremely important for businesses trying to keep up with a fast-paced industry. Having access to data that can drive and inform business decisions is a must. Affiliate campaigns allow brands and influencers alike to test and learn on the fly, and adjust as they go.\n\nSo don’t limit yourself to a ‘one and done’ standalone campaign. An affiliate strategy allows brands and influencers to try different copy text and imagery along with subtly altered messaging and communication styles on their audience. This agile, creatively-driven mindset allows brands and influencers to figure out what works, creating a more positive relationship between both parties. \n\nNo one likes wasting time and money on content that doesn’t convert. Affiliate marketing can help ensure that your marketing dollars are being spent in the right place, at the right time, and on the right audience. \n\nBrands and influencers ultimately have the same goal: to promote useful, relevant content and products to their audience. With this goal at the core of everything you do, you’ll be well on your way to creating successful affiliate marketing campaigns.",

As part of that visit Putin and Kim Jong Un signed a so-called defense pact in the North Korean capital on June 19.\n\nThe military treaty states: “In the event that any one of the two sides is put in a state of war by an armed invasion from an individual state or several states, the other side shall provide military and other assistance with all means in its possession without delay.\n\nIn response to that Pyongyang announced early this week that it will be sending troops in the form of a military engineering unit to support Russian forces on the ground in the Donetsk region. The troops are expected to arrive on the battlefield as soon as next month. \n\n\nThe DPRK has already supplied almost two million rounds of artillery ammunition, rockets for Russian multiple launch rocket systems and, it is alleged, ballistic missiles to support Putin’s forces since the two leaders met in Russia in September. The active participation of North Korean combat troops raises the specter of escalation to the conflict, especially as commentators think it will not go well for Pyongyang’s sappers on the battlefield.\n\nPentagon spokesperson Pat Ryder said during a briefing on June 25 that North Korean troops were effectively being sent to their slaughter and questioned the wisdom of the deployment. He said, “I think that if I were North Korean military personnel management, I would be questioning my choices on sending my forces to be cannon fodder in an illegal war against Ukraine – we’ve seen the kinds of casualties that Russian forces [have been taking].”\n\nHe added that the US was monitoring what appeared to be ever-deepening military ties between the two countries.\n\nIlya Ponomarev, a former Russian member of parliament told the UK’s Daily Express that North Korea has become an important bridge between the Kremlin and China. Beijing can indirectly transfer military equipment to Moscow through Pyongyang without falling foul of Western sanctions.\n\nAs he explained: “North Korea is one of key Russian partners and the meaning of the rationale behind them becoming such a partner is because they are acting as a bridge between China and Russia.\n\n“Essentially all the military equipment that is delivered from North Korea was developed for the North Koreans by the Chinese.\n\n“China is cautious not to fall foul of secondary sanctions by the US, but North Korea is not in danger.\n\n“So, there is no problem for the Chinese to assist North Koreans and then North Koreans to make trade with Russia and benefit from this both financially and in terms of military development.”\n\nMichael Carpenter, a member of the US National Security Council commented, the day after Putin and Kim signed their defense treaty, that the coalition that Putin was building between Russia, North Korea, Iran and Syria stood in stark contrast to the group of 50 nations standing beside Ukraine in the “Ramstein” Defense Contact Group and the approximately 100 countries that supported the UN Charter principles in the Global Peace Summit held in Switzerland on June 15 and 16. \n\n#steemit #news ukraine war",

Now, this little-known \"city\" is finally being honoured.\n\nThe stout, jug-like building rises 35ft above the greenery of Arlington, Virginia's Metropolitan Park, a green, path-laced oasis set amid Amazon's new HQ2 headquarters. Constructed from 5,000-odd red bricks, the structure feels both industrial and earthy, and stepping inside the small space reveals hundreds of glistening, glazed ceramic bulbs cascading from above in waves of blue, green and brown.\nThis is Queen City, an art installation paying homage to the 903 African American residents of the eponymous all-Black community, as well as the surrounding East Arlington neighbourhood, who were forcibly removed from their homes in the early 1940s to make way for the construction of The Pentagon.\n\"What they did to us was an atrocity,\" said 93-year-old Dr William Vollin, who remembers his childhood in Queen City before he and his family were kicked out. \"There was an alleyway with small houses on each side. We had a Black fire department, churches, barbershops, all kinds of businesses,\" he said, recalling how he and his friends used to play and walk to school together.\nAnd while there was no running water or electricity common in white neighbourhoods at the time, Queen City residents made do in their tight-knit community. \"It was like one big family,\" Vollin said.\nTwo and a half miles away at the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington, Queen City's little-known story is highlighted through photos and artefacts. According to Dr Scott Taylor, a third-generation Arlingtonian and the museum's president, the lost \"city's\" story starts at Arlington House, the Neoclassical mansion established in the early 1800s by John Parke Custis, the son of Martha Washington and her first husband, Daniel Parke Custis. Enslaved individuals from George Washington's estate, Mount Vernon, built Arlington House before working on the property and in the home. General Robert E Lee, who in 1831 married Mary Custis, heiress of Arlington House, lived here in the years leading up to the US Civil War. After joining the Confederacy, Lee left, never to return. (After many years of focusing on the Custis-Lee story, Arlington House recently has been reimagined to encompass the voices of African Americans who lived and laboured there, too. \n\n![p0j4t17m.jpg.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWdoBPyFo6FTihtNnxNDGErbvy3SNX95ZBUspfx9G57rH/p0j4t17m.jpg.webp)\nAfter the Emancipation Proclamation of 1 January 1863 freed enslaved people in Confederate states, the federal government established Freedman's Village on the Arlington House property (which would later become Arlington National Cemetery). The planned community, with clapboard houses, schools, churches and roads, became a thriving village for formerly enslaved workers. Reformer and writer Frederick Douglass often visited; and abolitionist Sojourner Truth,  who lived in the village for a year and a half beginning in 1864, advised villagers on their rights.\nAt that time, \"Arlington was 75% to 80% Black,\" Taylor said. \"There was so much Black activity then. People were learning to read and write. They were buying property, starting businesses. John Syphax [an African American politician born free in Virginia] became a delegate. This scared [white] people – that's why [the federal government closed] Freedman's Village.\"\nBy 1900, the thriving village had been dismantled, with few home and business owners fairly compensated. Today, little remains, other than a historical plaque in Foxcroft Heights Park overlooking Arlington National Cemetery, near its original location.\nMany former residents left for other Black neighbourhoods in Arlington or Washington DC. In 1892, Mount Olive Baptist Church, which was founded in Freedman's Village, bought two acres just down the road and sold lots to ousted congregants. Twelve years later, a developer bought 27 more acres. By 1940, more than 200 African American households lived in this new community, which became known as East Arlington. The War Department was renting 17 buildings across Washington DC and they needed to consolidate. Federal eyes fell on nearby Arlington, and the fate of the area's African American community was in jeopardy once again.\nMore like this:\n\n• The first free Black town in the US\n\n• The first Black American global sports superstar\n\n• The unsung Black poet who shaped the US\n\n\"There was an agricultural farm and a naval base in the area,\" said Dr Alfred Taylor (no relation to Dr Scott Taylor), who was born in Arlington's historically Black Green Valley neighbourhood in 1934 and has written three books about Arlington's Black history. Arlington County signed the contract to sell the land in September 1941, kicking off around-the-clock construction.\nAt first, only the Pentagon building went up, and Queen City residents watched in fascination. They were not told until the very last moment – in early February 1942 – that they were losing their homes to eminent domain for the construction of roads and parking areas for the Pentagon's 35,000 employees. \"They were given weeks to find a place to go,\" said Alfred Taylor. \"Then they burned their houses to the ground. The real damage is that it broke up homes and families. They had nowhere to go.\"\n\"We scattered all over the place,\" Vollin said. \"Many of my buddies I never saw again.\" Some went to friends and families, or they moved north or south. After being contacted by a lawyer hired by residents, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt secured temporary trailers, where some, including Vollin's family, lived in the Arlington neighbourhoods of Johnson's Hill (today's Arlington View) and Green Valley. \"The trailer camp was filthy, with a common filthy bathroom where people took showers,\" he said, remembering how the so-called temporary structures sat on mud flats. \"It was just awful.\"\n\n![p0j4t19h.jpg.webp](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXpUgfrLwHFpLtih4dRydga5peQvVdgXXSSd1UnWghs6Q/p0j4t19h.jpg.webp)\n\n\"We stayed there a couple of years,\" Vollin added. \"Then they moved us to another trailer camp in Green Valley. And they finally built some new project homes, where my family moved.\"\nDespite the fact that Vollin went on to become a successful educator, he has never forgotten how his family and others were treated. \"In my research,\" he said, \"eminent domain indicates that when they build, they're supposed to enhance an area. But they used eminent domain to destroy an area – the families, the businesses, the hopes and dreams. I deem that as an atrocity.\"\nFor many Americans, however, Queen City's story remained unknown until recently, when artist Nekisha Durrett created the eponymous installation. That lack of resources led me to think of this space that I wanted people to inhabit as a well.
