In bakeries the warm yellow glow of tray upon tray of doughnuts has greeted many a morning customer and lightened many a load. I remember fondly the maple-frosting-capped pastries that graced the shop in my hometown, and chances are, you have an evocative doughnut memory of your own, a madeleine that's been deep-fat fried.\n\nFried dough is an old, old vice. It probably has been on the menu for as long as flour has been milled and large quantities of animal fat or oil have been on hand. But doughnuts as we usually imagine them are a relatively young food. The North American version known by that name in shops around the world seems to have its origins in the decades after the American Revolution, when a Dutch treat took on a new identity.\n\nReading histories of the doughnut, you might be surprised to find that the confection has long been tinged with nationalism. At the same time that the new nation of the United States was trying to find its footing in the world, its denizens were trying to figure out what was essential about it – about its literature, about its national character, about its food. As part of the induction, Alessia Cara and JP Saxe will perform some of Morissette’s most beloved songs along with Ruby Waters.\n\n“I remember hearing Alanis for the first time when I was about 13. The 25-year-old first gained notice for her guest role as wayward teen Loretta McCready on the FX crime series Justified. She proved her comedic chops playing the youngest daughter of star Tim Allen on the ABC (and later Fox) sitcom Last Man Standing, then again alongside Beanie Feldstein in the 2019 coming-of-age comedy Booksmart. Her role on the 2019 Netflix limited series Unbelievable, in which she played a survivor of sexual assault pressured into retracting her statements, put her onto the awards circuit for the first time when she earned a 2020 Golden Globe nomination.\n\nHer latest performance, on Hulu’s Dopesick, for which she has received her first Emmy nom, was no less daunting. Dever stars as Betsy Mallum, a closeted lesbian in a small town in the Appalachia region of Virginia who, like many of her neighbors, works as a coal miner. But when an on-the-job injury leaves her with chronic pain, she turns to Dr. Samuel Finnix (fellow Emmy nominee Michael Keaton), who prescribes her OxyContin. With the new miracle drug developed by Purdue Pharma only recently on the market, neither Betsy nor Dr. Finnix is aware of its highly addictive properties. While both doctor and patient have their own struggles with opioid addiction, Betsy’s life spirals out of control as she causes harm to her loved ones as well as herself.\n\nDever spoke with THR about the responsibility of playing a character in the throes of addiction with humanity and nuance, how she managed to track Betsy’s journey while filming the series out of order and why the limited series is, in her mind, one of the most important projects she’s ever worked on.\n\nWhat initially drew you to this?\n\nThe role of Betsy immediately stood out to me. She is just such a powerful character, and she is so resilient in so many ways. The first episode — the whole series, really — broke my heart. When I read the first episode, I just fell in love with Betsy, and I had to play her. I felt such a big responsibility there to take on that kind of role. I am forever grateful to [creator and director] Danny Strong for putting his trust in me and allowing me to take on such an important role. It’s such an important story that deserved to be told. And, obviously, getting to work with Michael Keaton was a dream of mine, and Danny Strong made that dream come true in so many ways.\n\nCan you tell me more about the responsibility you felt? It’s already such a tough role in a show that deals with serious subject matter. How did you prepare for Betsy’s journey?\n\nI did a ton of research before doing this project, and it takes a toll on your life and completely changes your brain chemistry. What I learned most about addiction is that it’s different for everybody and it’s so not black and white. Betsy is a composite character, so she really represents all the victims of the opioid crisis. Knowing that going into this, I felt even more of a responsibility to make sure I got every ounce of this character right. I had to give everything to this character, and I completely forgot about how I felt on certain days because this is one of the most important stories impacting our culture right now. And it has been for far too long.\n\nI researched everything I possibly could. There are a lot of facts you can find on the internet, you know, but then there’s emotionally [getting into] this headspace. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had making something. I had crewmembers coming up to me while we were shooting, basically opening up to me and being willing to share their own stories that were similar to Betsy’s — that was happening constantly. It was a constant reminder of why we were making this show.\n\n\nBetsy Mallum (Kaitlyn Dever) is prescribed OxyContin after suffering an injury while working in a coal mine. ANTONY PLATT/HULU\nThis job must have been so intense, and I imagine that feedback really heightened the experience.\n\nIt was intense, but that emotion and energy are important — everybody poured [that] into this show. It was definitely worth it, because we all knew going into this that we were making something really, really special. And it’s something that I believe has created social change. In general, I feel like we all were going to work knowing that we were doing something really, really good, and all of the hard work we put in … You could sense it everywhere, which is an incredible feeling.\n\nI’ve read that you used a spreadsheet to organize your character’s arc. Is that a typical process for you?\n\nThere’s no real formula coming into a role like this. I had to treat it as one singular thing. I watched as many documentaries as I could, plus YouTube videos. I read the book [Dopesick by executive producer and writer] Beth Macy, which was super helpful and informative. But we were shooting all over the place, because [with a TV] series you don’t have the ability to shoot it all in order. There were times when we were shooting episode two and seven in one day. For Betsy, that’s a big jump — a several-year jump. I really wanted to be so specific about each scene I was doing, so I created a spreadsheet for each episode so I could track her journey and where she was emotionally. Betsy in episode one is so drastically different from Betsy in episode four. Especially keeping track of the level of withdrawals that she was going through … it is such an up-and-down journey.\n\nIs there a scene that stands out as being particularly challenging to film?\n\nOh, man, there are so many special scenes in the show, [like] in episode five, when Betsy has to steal her mother’s jewelry to sell to get more Oxy. In terms of my thoughts on the scene and also what I thought the audience would think of this scene in the moment, I just felt like that was going to resonate with a lot of people. It was really just such a heartbreaking moment for Betsy and her family, and you realize this person has nowhere to turn. She has tried everything, and it is literally impossible [for her] to stop [using]. That was the most heartbreaking scene to have to shoot. That whole sequence when Betsy takes down all her quilts that she had spent her life working on, and she goes and burns them in the yard. That whole sequence with the family was one of the most challenging scenes I’ve had to do. Again, you feel so much for this character and your heart breaks for her so much.\n\nInterview edited for length and clarity.",

On Wednesday, July 27, CNN reported that the Biden administration offered to release Viktor Bout, an imprisoned Russian arms dealer in exchange for Griner and another American detainee, Paul Whelan.\n\n\"We communicated a substantial offer that we believe could be successful based on a history of conversations with the Russians,\" a senior official told CNN. \"We communicated that a number of weeks ago, in June.\"\n\nGriner has been in Russia since February awaiting trial. She was first detained at a Moscow-area airport after Russian officials claimed they found vape cartridges containing hashish oil (or hash oil, containing cannabis, which is illegal in Russia) in her luggage. Her detention was extended repeatedly pending her criminal trial, which began July 1.\n\nIn May, the US government classified Griner's detention as a wrongful detainment, which means that \"the U.S. government has determined she is being used as a political pawn and as a result, is engaging in negotiations for her release, regardless of the legal process,\" Griner's agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, told the New York Times. (The Russian government, however, continues to deny that the case is politically motivated.) ESPN also noted that this classification meant that the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens would be leading the interagency team for securing Brittney Griner's release. Carstens was a key diplomat in ensuring the release of formerly detained US citizen Trevor Reed from Russia, per an April 28 CNN report.\n\nEven so, Cherelle Griner, Brittney Griner's wife, told The Associated Press at the time that she had \"zero trust\" in the US government in light of the way her wife's detention has been handled thus far. Since being detained, officials have been able to check on Griner. During a March 23 CNN broadcast, US State Department spokesman Ned Price confirmed that a US embassy official \"has been granted consular access\" to Griner. \"Our official found Brittney Griner to be in good condition, and we will continue to do everything we can to see to it that she is treated fairly throughout this ordeal,\" Price said.\n\nIn a June 29 interview with Rev. Al Sharpton, however, Cherelle said her wife \"is struggling.\" She also added, \"She's there terrified, she's there alone.\" The two have been able to communicate via letters, with Brittney telling Cherelle, \"I'm gonna do my best to hold on until I can get home . . . Here's everything we know about the situation, how Griner ended up in Russia, and when she's expected to be released.\n\nWhy Was Brittney Griner in Russia?\nGriner flew to Russia to play on the UMMC Ekaterinburg team. The 31-year-old has been a member of the Russian basketball team for several WNBA off-seasons. But this particular trip came at a tense time; Griner was detained shortly before Russia invaded Ukraine. The US State Department had issued a \"Do Not Travel\" advisory weeks earlier, citing the ongoing tension.\n\nThe two-time Olympian might have chosen to play overseas during this offseason for many different reasons — including to earn some extra cash. WNBA players typically earn between $60,000 and $229,000, while NBA players can earn upwards of $40 million. According to an Associated Press report, \"half of the WNBA's 144 players\" went overseas during the 2022 offseason, with high-ranking athletes earning more than $1 million. WNBA athlete Liz Cambage said on NBA Today that she is able to earn \"five to eight times more\" by playing overseas.\n\nWhy Was Brittney Griner Detained?\nIn her first court appearance, Griner was accused of transporting a \"significant amount\" of cannabis oil, per The Washington Post. The charges allege that, before traveling to Russia in February, Griner \"bought two cartridges for personal use, which contained 0.252 grams and 0.45 grams of hash oil,\" as reported by Russian state news agency TASS.\n\nIn her July 7 hearing, Griner told the court that she did not purposely break the law. \"I'd like to plead guilty, your honor. But there was no intent. I didn't want to break the law,\" Griner said, per Reuters. Griner's lawyers also told Russian judges in another hearing that the cannabis was prescribed for medicinal use for \"severe chronic pain,\" per CNN.\n\n\"We continue to insist that, by indiscretion, in a hurry, she packed her suitcase and did not pay attention to the fact that substances allowed for use in the United States ended up in this suitcase and arrived in the Russian Federation,\" her attorney Alexander Boykov stated, per CNN.\n\nOn June 27, Griner opened up about her initial detainment at the airport. She testified that she was forced to sign documents \"without fully understanding what they included,\" according to CNN. Griner said that she was not read her rights and that she tried to use Google translate on her phone to understand the documents, but \"barely knew what was in them,\" per CNN. And on June 22, several groups, including the National Organization for Women, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Urban League, and the National Action Network, banned together to send a letter to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, per the New York Times. The letter urged the administration \"to make a deal to get Brittney back home to America immediately and safely.\"\n\n\nGriner also previously pleaded to the president directly in a handwritten letter. She expressed that she was \"terrified I might be here forever,\" per CNN. \"I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don't forget about me and the other American detainees...\" Griner went on to say. \"Please do all you can to bring us home.\"\n\nWell, it looks like the administration is officially taking action, putting an \"substantial offer\" of exchange on the table, per CNN.\n\nThe administration official that spoke to CNN did not comment on the specifics of the \"substantial offer,\" but said that it was communicated weeks ago in June. CNN reported that the deal would involve the exchange of Viktor Bout (a Russian arms trafficker serving 25 years in a US prison) for the release of Griner and another American detainee, Paul Whelan.\n\nThe official told CNN that it was in Russia's court to be responsive to the offer, \"yet at the same time that does not leave us passive, as we continue to communicate the offer at very senior levels.'\"\n\nThe source also stated: \"It takes two to tango.
