| body | The air hinted at sand and heat while the eastern sky lightened, only perceptible as a lessening of the visibility of stars. Somewhere in the distance an animal skittered through rocks, perhaps the predator, perhaps the prey. The world lay still for a moment, as though drawing a slow breath. Araghan dan Ristoval, sitting with his back to his cook fire, waited. To his left a line of tents lay as still as the predawn quiet. He scanned the darkness, searching for creatures more dangerous than the small ones fighting for survival in the desert. Nothing moved. “You know you only have one choice.” A figure seemed to form out of sand and darkness to stand next to him in a space that a moment before had held nothing. Araghan let out a short hiss of breath, resisting the urge to grab the blaster from the rock at his left. “You could have told me you were coming.” “You knew.” The figure moved, a fluid dance of wind and wildness as it bent toward him, covered in the flowing robes of the desert people, veiled and showing eyes that smiled. “I’ve watched you wait every night for two weeks.” Araghan grunted. “Typical of you to decide to visit at the last minute.” “I was watching you try to decide.” “And I only have one choice?” Araghan wondered at the strange friendship he shared with this man, nameless, since the power of a name was more than the dark figure was willing to give. “I take it that staying here isn’t that choice.” A low chuckle rumbled from the man. “If you stay you will no longer have the blessing of the Geldrak. My people take their beliefs in our God seriously.” “Your beliefs.” Araghan closed his eyes. Too many times they had argued this point. The man had insisted this moment would come and there would be no recourse. There was only one path to follow. “Atthan Jawethe requires obedience.” “I don’t believe in your god.” “Perhaps not, but He believes in you.” He heard the smile in the man’s voice, felt anger at the amusement, at the fact that his whole life was being laid out before him. Choice had been taken away. The desert people had suffered his presence ‘for a season,’ and now that season was ending. “How can I do something for someone I don’t even believe exists?” “Atthan Jawethe doesn’t require your belief in Him. He has His ways, and if He desires your participation for His ends, He will have it.” “Doesn’t sound very personable.” Araghan glanced at his companion. “I’ve been happy enough here. I don’t know why you think my leaving will solve whatever it is you think is supposed to happen.” “One day you will see my city. You will know the possibility of paradise.” There was a flutter of robes and sand and empty air. Araghan sat alone. The sun would soon top the horizon. He sensed movement in one of the tents, saw a figure exit the farthest one and braced himself for what was to come. The man who came to sit beside him was an old friend, from a life he wanted to forget. Black hair was stark against his pale skin. His eyes, dark in the false dawn would be deep blue in full sun. He was a captain in the Empress’ Elite Guard, a lifetime away from Araghan’s sanctuary here in the desert. “Dayel.” Araghan nodded as the man sat on the rock next to him. “Do you ever sleep?” Dayel reached for the silver thermo flask on the ground. He opened it, letting the rich aroma of Eldarion coffee waft through the air. Araghan took in a deep breath and afforded himself the luxury of a stretch. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” “That seems to be something you’re looking for, rather avidly.” Dayel picked up a mug and filled it. “It waits for you out here.” “I’d like to think that we’ve come to friendly terms.” Araghan shook his head when Dayel offered to pour some for him. “It’s a beautiful world here. No confusion, just the bare bones of survival. Life at its most simple.” “I don’t believe life was meant to be simple. Not for people like us.” Dayel took a sip from his mug and glanced over at him. “Today’s the last day.” Araghan nodded. Something in the air threatened to choke him. Even the sand had turned against him. “You’re not going to make me go back alone.” Dayel was his friend. Unlike many in the Guard he had never borne any ill will toward Araghan. Central Command knew that. It was why they had sent Dayel. Araghan wondered if it would have been better to send someone who hated him. “When we reach Base Camp you’ll have my answer.” There was a slight pause. “I guess I can’t argue with that.” Dayel took another sip of coffee. The sun topped the horizon, sending a pale gold shaft of light across the tents. There was stirring now in some of them, and Araghan saw his hired men breaking down camp and preparing the grav transports for the last day of this tour. “Time to get to work.” He gave Dayel a tight smile. “You, of course, can be part of the lazy Riscean aristocracy that are about to converge on me for the lack of Geldrak sightings.” Dayel followed his gaze to the woman who had just emerged from the nearest tent. He chuckled. “I think I’ll sit this one out. I will break down my own tent, though. Just to be a little help to you.” He strode away, leaving Araghan to face the wrath of the woman. Her name was Alise al’Tresein. She was the matriarch of one of the most influential noble families in the entire Riscean Empire. She seemed to think her position for some reason should have a direct influence on the presence of the elusive desert people during the two weeks they had spent out here, touring the Saranteon Basin, on the edge of the Great Heiralon Desert. “I’m inclined to ask for my money back.” Her black hair was pulled into a severe bun, and no sign of grey marred it despite her advanced age. “I didn’t spend a small fortune in order to live in a cramped, hot tent and watch a few vultures fly in the distance.” Her eyes were light violet and caught the sunlight, making them appear to glow. Araghan stood up, towering over her. “You signed the contract. I made no promises of what you’d see out here.” Her mouth curled in a snarl. “And I intend to take up your poor business practices with the Empress herself when I return if I have to. This time here has been torturous at best. My best friend came on your tour and saw them on three occasions.” “They’re not exactly performers.” Araghan refused to back down. “They’re people. They have lives to lead. Lives that don’t include acting like animals in a zoo.” She stared up at him, opening her mouth and then closing it. “Well, I never.” She turned away from him and started walking to the breakfast line. “You haven’t heard the last from me.” “I’m sure I haven’t.” Araghan watched her as she joined the rest of the sorry group. He glanced out at the desert past the dwindling line of tents. “You’re going to make sure I lose my customer base, aren’t you?” His voice was low, meant for no one to hear, but he thought he heard distant laughter. They could move like the wind, giving the appearance of a whirlwind of sand. Could they hear everything that went on here as well? He shook his head and went to help with the setup of the main grav transport. “Watch that last power cell.” Sammael, one of the hired men, snapped a section of plush seating against its foundation. He nodded as Araghan walked up. “It’s going to need servicing when we make it back to Base.” Araghan reached over to help with the other fastening. “You could probably run this business yourself.” He unfolded one of the canopies, and had almost set the whole thing up before he realized that Sammael was staring at him. He turned and waited for the man’s reaction. “You’re going back, aren’t you?” Sammael walked up so that his face was only inches from Araghan’s. “That’s why he’s here.” His blond hair was pulled back with a black scarf, and his pale green eyes glared with intensity. He was a hair’s breadth shorter than Araghan, with a round babyish face that made him look pudgy in spite of his medium build. Araghan held his ground. “I’m needed elsewhere. I have to consider the possibility.” Sammael stepped back. “And what about the graveyard? How many people are going to see that once you go? Because let’s face it, Araghan. Yeah. I can run this outfit. But you’re the one that brought the customers in.” Araghan felt a wave of sadness. He turned away. “Maybe it’s time I let go of the graveyard. It’s not like it made a difference.” “So you’re just going to give up?” “I’d like to think of it as re-positioning my options.” “Whatever you want to call it, you’re running away.” Araghan stopped. “Is that what you think? Because from where I’m standing it looks like I’m running back to something I want nothing of.” He started walking again. It was time to go. “You brought us hope.” Araghan shook his head. There was no hope. The day warmed to oven temperature as the caravan made its slow way through a canyon that would eventually give way to a large open space filled with bones. Human remains, centuries old, lay as a mute testimony to the nature of the people who ruled here. Araghan saved it for the last day of every tour. He wanted his customers to have a good visual memory to take home with them. He doubted the sight bothered them longer than it took them to get home and back to their lives. He hoped that some of them remembered longer and maybe thought to do something about it. His charges sat, senses dulled by the heat and the high walls of the gully. An hour into travel, he sat at the back of the caravan on a seat fitted to one of the storage units. They neared the graveyard and the canyon began to open up. Araghan saw a faint whirlwind of sand ahead and fought a smile. Alise al’Tresein was about to have a memory he was sure she’d never forget. They emerged into open space. The landscape glittered white as far as one could see. The grav train headed for the middle. Araghan listened to the gasps of dismay and sounds of retching. “What is this?” someone demanded. Sammael stood up on the front grav unit that led the train. “It’s Yethen’s Graveyard.” His voice was clear and carried well. “Where the people of Riscea chased their Sirtan slaves, who wished only to escape the oppression of living under cruelty. A hundred thousand men, women and children fled to the desert, in hopes of receiving shelter from the Geldrak. But they were cut down, every last one of them, here in the middle of the Saranteon Basin, where the Riscean nobility sought to murder the people who had entrusted their lives to them.” Araghan was surprised at the silence. Usually people were grumbling by now. Sammael was doing a good job. This show would probably be the best one they’d ever pulled off. “They thought they could hide their dirty secret out here in the desert where few people go. History never spoke of it. But we know what happened. And now you do too.” Sammael jumped off the grav unit to cries of outrage. “This is unforgivable!” Alise al’Tresein had leapt up in her chair and now stood swaying. Araghan though she might fall into the bones for a moment but she sat down, her face white, pointing out into the desert. Araghan almost laughed. There were at least ten of the desert people out there, among the bones, replaying history. Off to the side he saw his friend keeping watch. Araghan nodded to him. He almost wanted to believe in their god, for the honor they showed him in their actions, one last performance. But almost wasn’t good enough, and what had their god done when his people needed a miracle? Sometimes the miracle is farther in the distance than you’d like. Dark brown eyes watched him, measuring him. Perhaps you have to accept that the miracle might not be where you’d place it in your life. “Maybe I have to want the miracle enough to follow the path.” Araghan’s voice was a murmur, but he saw a smile in the eyes just as the brown desert robes blurred, leaving nothing but bones and sand. He turned to find Dayel watching him, and he walked through the graveyard to face the man who had been his friend. “It will take me two weeks to tie up my loose ends.” Dayel’s eyes strayed to where the Geldrak man had stood then moved back to Araghan. “Fair enough.” His voice held respect. “Araghan...I know what you’re giving up. I understand now.” Araghan felt his throat go dry. He nodded to Sammael to start up the caravan again. They would make Base Camp in a couple of hours. He gave Dayel a faint smile. “Thanks.” Moments later they were on their way. He refused to wear the uniform that Dayel had brought for him. It was his old one that he had left behind when he resigned his commission. “I’m not going to put it on until I’ve been officially reinstated. Somehow I doubt Galod is that excited about my return. Dayel gave him a sidelong glance as they drove away from the desert toward the Empress’ Fortress miles away. “Sairean’s the one that wanted you to wear it.” Araghan gazed out the side window of the military transport. Sammael stood in the distance, watching him leave. If ever there was a man forlorn, Sammael was that man. Recruited from the underground gangs of Reisa, he had been a quick student for Araghan. Now he would probably fall back into the life he had once known. How is that supposed to justify what I’m doing? Araghan turned to Dayel. “When she accepts my offer of protection, once I’ve sworn on the sword of her father, then I’ll believe you. Until then...well...you’ll have to forgive me if I don’t quite believe a word you say.” “She’s grown up a lot, Araghan. She’s had time to put it behind her.” “She screamed she’d see me dead. I distinctly heard three different ways she’d do it as I walked out of the Compound.” Araghan leaned back in his seat. “I’m almost certain I’m on my way back to a jail cell. I just hope you have a plan for getting me out.” Dayel snorted. “No one’s going to put you in a cell, Araghan. I told you. There’ve been three attempts on her life within the last two months. Fourteen kidnapping attempts in the past year.” “And one was successful.” “To a degree. We found her before any harm could be done. And the kidnappers were executed.” Araghan rubbed his temples. “Without finding out any useful information beforehand, I’m sure.” Dayel was silent for a moment. “Galod wanted the execution to set an example. He wanted a message sent out to those who might be having similar thoughts. By taking care of it quickly it was sure to work as a deterrent.” “And no one even thought any of the attempts might be connected in some way.” Araghan fought the surge of helplessness that threatened to overwhelm him. “Even before I left, Reisa was turning into a hotbed of gang and terrorist activity. You have a lot of unhappy residents in the common districts and sectors.” “Galod’s got an eye on those. We haven’t been sitting around twiddling our thumbs, Araghan. We’ve infiltrated two of the larger groups. We’re making progress.” Araghan turned to stare at Dayel. “How can you infiltrate gangs comprised of Sirtan descendants, when you don’t look in any way like them?” “Maybe you’re not the only Sirtan who’s found favor in the Empress’ court.” Araghan shook his head and laughed. “Ten to one you’re being played.” Dayel banged his hand on the control panel, and the transport lost traction for a moment. “Why can’t you give us the benefit of the doubt?” His voice rose a little, surprising Araghan. “Why are you so sure that we’ll fail?” “I’m sorry.” Araghan looked out the window again. “Galod didn’t show any signs of developing intelligence when I left. Sairean’s father was the only man I trusted to do anything about the class warfare that’s going to eventually take this empire down. If things have changed I’ll try to entertain that possibility. If I’m not in jail of course.” Dayel scowled. “You’re not going to jail.” “Yeah, we’ll see.” |

"body": "The air hinted at sand and heat while the eastern sky lightened, only perceptible as a lessening of the visibility of stars. Somewhere in the distance an animal skittered through rocks, perhaps the predator, perhaps the prey. The world lay still for a moment, as though drawing a slow breath.\n\nAraghan dan Ristoval, sitting with his back to his cook fire, waited. To his left a line of tents lay as still as the predawn quiet. He scanned the darkness, searching for creatures more dangerous than the small ones fighting for survival in the desert. Nothing moved.\n\n“You know you only have one choice.” A figure seemed to form out of sand and darkness to stand next to him in a space that a moment before had held nothing. \n\nAraghan let out a short hiss of breath, resisting the urge to grab the blaster from the rock at his left. “You could have told me you were coming.”\n\n“You knew.” The figure moved, a fluid dance of wind and wildness as it bent toward him, covered in the flowing robes of the desert people, veiled and showing eyes that smiled. “I’ve watched you wait every night for two weeks.”\n\nAraghan grunted. “Typical of you to decide to visit at the last minute.”\n\n“I was watching you try to decide.”\n\n“And I only have one choice?” Araghan wondered at the strange friendship he shared with this man, nameless, since the power of a name was more than the dark figure was willing to give. “I take it that staying here isn’t that choice.”\n\nA low chuckle rumbled from the man. “If you stay you will no longer have the blessing of the Geldrak. My people take their beliefs in our God seriously.”\n\n“Your beliefs.” Araghan closed his eyes. Too many times they had argued this point. The man had insisted this moment would come and there would be no recourse. There was only one path to follow.\n\n“Atthan Jawethe requires obedience.”\n\n“I don’t believe in your god.” \n\n“Perhaps not, but He believes in you.”\n\nHe heard the smile in the man’s voice, felt anger at the amusement, at the fact that his whole life was being laid out before him. Choice had been taken away. The desert people had suffered his presence ‘for a season,’ and now that season was ending.\n\n“How can I do something for someone I don’t even believe exists?”\n\n“Atthan Jawethe doesn’t require your belief in Him. He has His ways, and if He desires your participation for His ends, He will have it.”\n\n“Doesn’t sound very personable.” Araghan glanced at his companion. “I’ve been happy enough here. I don’t know why you think my leaving will solve whatever it is you think is supposed to happen.”\n\n“One day you will see my city. You will know the possibility of paradise.” There was a flutter of robes and sand and empty air. Araghan sat alone. The sun would soon top the horizon. He sensed movement in one of the tents, saw a figure exit the farthest one and braced himself for what was to come.\n\nThe man who came to sit beside him was an old friend, from a life he wanted to forget. Black hair was stark against his pale skin. His eyes, dark in the false dawn would be deep blue in full sun. He was a captain in the Empress’ Elite Guard, a lifetime away from Araghan’s sanctuary here in the desert.\n\n“Dayel.” Araghan nodded as the man sat on the rock next to him.\n\n“Do you ever sleep?” Dayel reached for the silver thermo flask on the ground. He opened it, letting the rich aroma of Eldarion coffee waft through the air.\n\nAraghan took in a deep breath and afforded himself the luxury of a stretch. “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.”\n\n“That seems to be something you’re looking for, rather avidly.” Dayel picked up a mug and filled it. “It waits for you out here.”\n\n“I’d like to think that we’ve come to friendly terms.” Araghan shook his head when Dayel offered to pour some for him. “It’s a beautiful world here. No confusion, just the bare bones of survival. Life at its most simple.”\n\n“I don’t believe life was meant to be simple. Not for people like us.” Dayel took a sip from his mug and glanced over at him. “Today’s the last day.”\n\nAraghan nodded. Something in the air threatened to choke him. Even the sand had turned against him.\n\n“You’re not going to make me go back alone.”\n\nDayel was his friend. Unlike many in the Guard he had never borne any ill will toward Araghan. Central Command knew that. It was why they had sent Dayel. Araghan wondered if it would have been better to send someone who hated him.\n\n“When we reach Base Camp you’ll have my answer.” \n\nThere was a slight pause. “I guess I can’t argue with that.” Dayel took another sip of coffee. \n\nThe sun topped the horizon, sending a pale gold shaft of light across the tents. There was stirring now in some of them, and Araghan saw his hired men breaking down camp and preparing the grav transports for the last day of this tour.\n\n“Time to get to work.” He gave Dayel a tight smile. “You, of course, can be part of the lazy Riscean aristocracy that are about to converge on me for the lack of Geldrak sightings.”\n\nDayel followed his gaze to the woman who had just emerged from the nearest tent. He chuckled. “I think I’ll sit this one out. I will break down my own tent, though. Just to be a little help to you.” He strode away, leaving Araghan to face the wrath of the woman.\n\nHer name was Alise al’Tresein. She was the matriarch of one of the most influential noble families in the entire Riscean Empire. She seemed to think her position for some reason should have a direct influence on the presence of the elusive desert people during the two weeks they had spent out here, touring the Saranteon Basin, on the edge of the Great Heiralon Desert.\n\n“I’m inclined to ask for my money back.” Her black hair was pulled into a severe bun, and no sign of grey marred it despite her advanced age. “I didn’t spend a small fortune in order to live in a cramped, hot tent and watch a few vultures fly in the distance.” Her eyes were light violet and caught the sunlight, making them appear to glow.\n\nAraghan stood up, towering over her. “You signed the contract. I made no promises of what you’d see out here.”\n\nHer mouth curled in a snarl. “And I intend to take up your poor business practices with the Empress herself when I return if I have to. This time here has been torturous at best. My best friend came on your tour and saw them on three occasions.”\n\n“They’re not exactly performers.” Araghan refused to back down. “They’re people. They have lives to lead. Lives that don’t include acting like animals in a zoo.”\n\nShe stared up at him, opening her mouth and then closing it. “Well, I never.” She turned away from him and started walking to the breakfast line. “You haven’t heard the last from me.”\n\n“I’m sure I haven’t.” Araghan watched her as she joined the rest of the sorry group. He glanced out at the desert past the dwindling line of tents. “You’re going to make sure I lose my customer base, aren’t you?” His voice was low, meant for no one to hear, but he thought he heard distant laughter.\n\nThey could move like the wind, giving the appearance of a whirlwind of sand. Could they hear everything that went on here as well? He shook his head and went to help with the setup of the main grav transport.\n\n“Watch that last power cell.” Sammael, one of the hired men, snapped a section of plush seating against its foundation. He nodded as Araghan walked up. “It’s going to need servicing when we make it back to Base.”\n\nAraghan reached over to help with the other fastening. “You could probably run this business yourself.” He unfolded one of the canopies, and had almost set the whole thing up before he realized that Sammael was staring at him. He turned and waited for the man’s reaction.\n\n“You’re going back, aren’t you?” Sammael walked up so that his face was only inches from Araghan’s. “That’s why he’s here.” His blond hair was pulled back with a black scarf, and his pale green eyes glared with intensity. He was a hair’s breadth shorter than Araghan, with a round babyish face that made him look pudgy in spite of his medium build.\n\nAraghan held his ground. “I’m needed elsewhere. I have to consider the possibility.”\n\nSammael stepped back. “And what about the graveyard? How many people are going to see that once you go? Because let’s face it, Araghan. Yeah. I can run this outfit. But you’re the one that brought the customers in.”\n\nAraghan felt a wave of sadness. He turned away. “Maybe it’s time I let go of the graveyard. It’s not like it made a difference.”\n\n“So you’re just going to give up?”\n\n“I’d like to think of it as re-positioning my options.”\n\n“Whatever you want to call it, you’re running away.”\n\nAraghan stopped. “Is that what you think? Because from where I’m standing it looks like I’m running back to something I want nothing of.” He started walking again. It was time to go.\n\n“You brought us hope.”\n\nAraghan shook his head. There was no hope.\n\nThe day warmed to oven temperature as the caravan made its slow way through a canyon that would eventually give way to a large open space filled with bones. Human remains, centuries old, lay as a mute testimony to the nature of the people who ruled here. Araghan saved it for the last day of every tour. He wanted his customers to have a good visual memory to take home with them. He doubted the sight bothered them longer than it took them to get home and back to their lives. He hoped that some of them remembered longer and maybe thought to do something about it.\n\nHis charges sat, senses dulled by the heat and the high walls of the gully. An hour into travel, he sat at the back of the caravan on a seat fitted to one of the storage units. They neared the graveyard and the canyon began to open up.
