He left our home yesterday when we talked about our findings with him. He’s like a vault and won’t say a word. Answer: This is not an easy topic to discuss openly about. I appreciate your bravery. Raising children is no easy task especially to single parents. We as parents need to give respect, love, understanding, discipline and tons of redirection. With that being said a simple way I can offer you some perspective is by trying to remember when you were 19. This period along with many others in life is a scary moment. I am willing to bet that there is some fear within your son about something. Perhaps you should reconnect on a 19 year old level. What do you mean? Answer: Imagine if you were in your sons shoes? (Thinking as your son): Gee, I really messed up this time. I’m sure my parents want the best for me but I don’t know what I want for myself. I’m embarrassed that I may have hurt or made my parents angry, but I don’t know how to express it. Imagine that basic human thought process for a second and understand that what you found out about what your son did was wrong but it is an opportunity to reconnect and open up for dialogue. Well, how can I do that? Answer: Both parents need to have a family meeting with your son. The only goals that should be on the table are: 1. Expressing in a constructive way how this act is unacceptable in your home and you will not stand for that type of behavior moving forward. 2. Offering him a better way/perspective while being clear that you are there to support him but only as long as he his constructive and participating in improving himself. Here are a few things you can use as a reference. Feel free to add your own spin on it just as long as the message is the same. 1. Hey son we are very upset and disappointed but we understand you made a mistake and we forgive you. We know there is something you may be fearful of telling us but we want to hear you out. So please tell us what is troubling you for you to feel you have to do this? 2. What is it that you want for yourself? 3. Son, please understand that your we love you but we cannot support you in our home with this kind of behavior and actions. Your actions could jeopardize our home and our lives. Let us show you a better constructive way to achieve your dreams. 4. What can we do to help you succeed at whatever it is you want to do? 5. How does this situation make you feel? 6. Okay let us set a family goal, so we can work together to make you successful son. (Actually create something for the family to work on together.) Answer: This a good question. I assume that you have a particular career in mind that you are pursuing. College is never a bad thing which is why I would say go. However keep in mind that no matter what college you attend or what education degree obtain, you will still need to practice. With that being said may I also recommend that you go work for a company in the field of your interest to see if it is something you still want to pursue. Example: Let us assume that you want to be a lawyer/attorney. Obtain a job as a secretary in order to gain basic work experience and to absorb the culture of the environment. If you have time on your side (meaning you’re under 24 years old) then this is the optimal strategy. Make sure you do your absolute best regardless of the position. Good luck! (1 page long, Summary, Objective?) Would love to hear from Human Resource professionals. Answer: There are many things you can do to make your résumé stand out. In regards to aesthetics, a simple change in format would do the trick. However, the rules do change and trends are common in the hiring process. The best standards I advise are to answer a few questions quickly in your résumé. If you can answer these questions that a hiring manager will have then you are increasing your chances of success. Let me take you inside the mind of a hiring manager. The things that go through their mind after you have passed the applicant tracking systems filters are: 1. Who is this person? 2. Am I overwhelmed by the content on this document (I want easy to read and to the point.) 3. Is this person qualified? 3a. Am I (the hiring manager) intrigued by the content enough to read further? 4. So what you have so many awards, experience and success. What can you do for me? 5. Do I like the message you are sending and does it fit into our organization? 6. Was I (the hiring manager) able to answer all of these concerns in 10 seconds or less? If not it's a waste of my time, and I’m moving to the next candidate. 7. By having this individual on my team will she improve client experience or retention, improve employee culture, or cause a positive spark to help this company/organization elevate in any way? You cannot control what they think, perceive or feel about you. However, you can control your actions and character. So when I say ignore it, I am referring to allowing your goodness to shine. When you’re great at what you do and always have a positive attitude, I assure you that no one in the physical realm can harm your character. Often times some workplace conflict is rooted in one or more individuals own insecurities and sadness with their current state of affairs. So how should I behave? Answer: Everyday you come to work you behave as if you haven’t heard the rumors spread about you. I am aware that the anger and frustration may be there but please don’t give in. Accept that these things bother you but understand that you are above it and refuse to entertain negative behaviors that WILL NOT make you successful. I do not know what happens in every company that has engaged in this behavior whether intentionally or not. I am only offering my professional perspective on this as I have experienced these concerns from clients. The best way to explain is to give a few scenarios of the most possible circumstance (s) that happen often. They are: 1. The company has found an internal candidate. 2. They were testing to see what candidates were available to them. 3. The posting may be invalid, (meaning posted in error from an employee in human resource.) 4. The company forgot to remove the posting. 5. The company is re-evaluating the position. 6. The company was not satisfied with the candidate pool. I hope these common scenarios make sense to you all. P.S.: If you are applying to opportunities through some of the popular job portals like monster.com, indeed, etc do not apply for jobs that have been posted for 8 days or more. The reason for this is to avoid being #1,000th candidate to apply versus #127th candidate to apply.
