| title | A Startup’s Journey Into the Steem Blockchain |
| body | This is the start of a new journey of how I can take my centralized web platform and convert it to a Steem blockchain powered decentralized application. My goal with this blog series is to describe the business needs I have and the solutions I find to those problems from a business owners perspective. As a developer I will need to learn the technical details to get to the solutions that my startup needs, but I will write about the requirements and solutions that are driving my development work so that anyone who is interested in this process can follow along with no technical background. I will give you some background on my platform so that you can understand why I want to build it on the Steem blockchain. It started as an idea aimed at website owners who want to offer cash or credit rewards on their website, as a marketing tool to keep visitors staying longer.
Failure #1
My initial MVP allowed users to point at any web element on their web pages and make that element give “loot” to visitors who clicked on it. It had a visual effect of a coin appearing like in Super Mario, with a coin sound reinforcing the reward that was given. Visitors could then go to my platform and cash out digital and physical rewards that the website owner had added. A trail of coin rewards could be added throughout the website that had to be followed in the correct order to earn the reward, which could be an Amazon gift card or a discount code for some other service. The main goal was to guide website visitors to viewing new products and text content or encourage them to go through a checkout process. This worked very well from a technical standpoint and I was very happy with how I had solved hundreds of frontend and backend issues on my own to successfully force my will on my computer. I used PayPal to have users deposit funds that they could distribute as “loot” throughout their site, and let their visitors fight over. I started doing some marketing and got a lot of new signups that started adding content. I noticed a problem however, they were no webmasters and could not add the required script file to their websites as I described in my guide. They also thought that my platform was creating websites for them that they somehow could make money from, which added to their confusion. I had basically created a marketing service for web developers who were also running their own small online business. The target population for my service was extremely small and it had all just made sense to me while I was building my platform. I was at a point where I was ready to go full steam ahead on online marketing and was excited for the next phase in my startup, only to have reality come down on me hard. I had no idea of how to change the project, or even what the new business model would be, so I left it online as a proof-of-concept site without any plans for moving forward.
Failure #2
A long time later, I was browsing the web for some new frontend ideas for displaying media content. I ran into scrollable galleries that created infinite walls of images that you could move around with your mouse and was pretty excited about finding a good use for this type of visual effect. I started thinking about how I could auto-generate these galleries for users and make it easy for anyone to get their media content online. Combined with my reward technology this would be a great hit I figured, so I got excited again and started working on merging the two technologies. It turned out to be another successful implementation from a technical standpoint where each tile in this infinite grid of images could offer visitors small amount of coins as rewards for viewing them. Each image tile could link to a web page with products or some other valuable content that users wanted their visitors to look at. It was basically set up as a visual marketing tool and I was ready to market it again. Something wasn’t quite right though, I noticed that it was hard to make my users entertain the idea that they should deposit funds to their free galleries and distribute in each tile, partly because my website did not focus on a problem and its solution that visitors could clearly understand. I felt that I was onto something this time however and spent some time thinking about what I could do to make it a no brainer for people to use. During this time I was watching my favorite YouTubers complain about how YouTube had cut their ad revenue by 90% and they were basically begging for donations to be able to continue making a living from their content. It then dawned on me that my service would make the funds go the opposite direction, from visitors to the content creators as donations via micro transactions for content they enjoyed watching. The idea of tipping or micro transactions in general is not new, Steemit is clearly proof of this, but I wanted my service to be a monetization layer on top of any website or service they were already using. Thanks to YouTube’s API I could automatically pull in the entire video library of my favorite YouTuber into a scrollable gallery complete with titles and thumbnails of the videos. I added a large tip button to each gallery tile’s content that visitors could click to donate small amounts and all was working like a well-oiled machine. I was once again ready to start the marketing phase of my startup! This is the exact time I really started looking into the blockchain technology, and I got hooked. The technology was fascinating and I wanted to learn more. Before I even wrapped my head around how everything worked I knew I wanted to take advantage of this technology somehow, so I started looking for APIs to communicate with the blockchain from my application.
Failure #3
I found a great service called BlockCypher that had a near complete API for Bitcoin and better yet, they had a special micro transactions API for low cost transactions! They even had code examples and support for Ruby on Rails, which I used to develop my platform. I was learning how to create and sign transactions on the blockchain through my implementation of their API and was near completion. I went back one day to their API docs and found a red banner explaining how they had discontinued the micro transaction API due to increasing transaction fees on the Bitcoin network. I was bummed, but noticed they also offered an Ethereum API which I knew would charge lower fees since the Ethereum blockchain was less congested. After nearly rebuilding all my code functions to use this new API instead, I noticed that most of the transactions I needed to make still cost too much to transact on the Ethereum blockchain. I felt like giving up development on my project and made a last effort to put back the PayPal code I had developed earlier until one of the new Ethereum startups could build a system that enabled micro transactions at very low cost.
Current failure(?)
This is when I discovered the Steemit site through Dollar Vigilante who I follow on YouTube, and I feel that I once again have a path to converting my project to a decentralized application that removes me as the third party responsible for keeping and distributing user funds. In the following posts I will describe my learning process with the Steem API and how this approach will work out as the ultimate solution to my problems. I am cautiously excited once again and if it wasn’t for my passion for development and the blockchain (and Steemit!) I would not be writing this post. Time to get some Steem test code running… |

| title | 5 Things to Know Before Becoming a Blockchain Entrepreneur |
| body | It has become increasingly common in media to report about the frenzy surrounding blockchain startups via their ICOs, or Initial Coin Offerings as they are called. Most articles and posts discuss the ridiculous amounts of money they collect in a matter of hours, with very little due diligence done by the investors. There are still no success stories from these ICOs and the startups have yet to prove that they can complete any of the ideas that they promise in their white papers. The blockchain technology can benefit everyone when the actual projects and the problems they solve are in focus instead of the fund raising process and the speculation for a quick buck. I have tried to compress the information to five main points that I want to share with you.
1. What problem are you solving that can only be solved using the blockchain?
This is a critical question to ask yourself before jumping on the blockchain train to the ICO launch. The core of your solution has to be tied to decentralization and minimizing trust between parties before it should be even considered as a blockchain app (also called dapp for decentralized application). Many web applications today run very well through cloud powered AWS or Azure servers that can automatically scale up or down based on traffic to the applications. The speed at which their databases can process data is unmatched and the price has never been lower to run your own backend infrastructure. Handling thousands of transactions per second is realistic even for a small business owner. Compare this to the Bitcoin blockchain which is currently able to handle 3 transactions per second, or the Ethereum blockchain at about 30 transactions per second. The benefits from building your app must outweigh these limitations and also weigh in the transaction fees that you will need to deal with for every single transaction between two parties. Transaction fees play an even bigger role if you are considering micro transactions where small amounts are passed around, since the fees can actually be greater than the amount sent. Still think your idea should be built as a dapp? Ok let's move on to the next point.
2. Is your target audience tech savvy?
Let's be realistic, if you are reading this article or considering a startup running on the blockchain you don't belong in the 99% slice of the population that have yet to even hear about the blockchain. The obstacles facing non-technical newbies trying to learn about this new technology will deter most of them from even learning about your startup. If you are going to offer a tradable digital token to represent your services or products, you will need a target audience that can first figure out how to trade their fiat cash via an exchange to Bitcoin or Ethereum, then use them to buy your tokens via encrypted public addresses without making any mistakes in copy/pasting hashed addresses around. However, if you are smart you will build a dapp that hides all token handling and blockchain transactions from the end user and focus on the user experience. This has yet to be done and there are huge opportunities for startups who can bridge the gap between older generations and the blockchain.
3. You still face the normal obstacles with starting a business
So you got your shiny new dapp built as a smart contract for the Ethereum blockchain. You feel satisfaction from having learnt new technologies and solved your technical problems (or your partner did). Let's take a step back and look at your dapp as a general piece of software. If your application had been built as a standard web or mobile application, would it immediately attract the attention of users and make them want to use it? Does it solve a problem your target audience has, that no other company has solved? If a competitor would try to solve the same problem in a centralized manner using content delivery networks that place their application near almost every potential user in the US, would their solution fail compared to your decentralized application? Will your users be aware of or even care how you handle their data? This is important since a large portion of the population still has no idea about online privacy or how they can and should protect their personal data. The first thing a user will notice is how you handle the user experience, speed of your service and the way you solve their problem. You have to educate each user about the blockchain benefits on top of doing marketing like every other business. You are basically facing problems that cause over 90% of small businesses to fail within 3 years including new ones that did not exist before the blockchain came along.
4. Handling support issues with a smart contract
Your startup has officially launched and is attracting users. However, you are noticing that some of your users are complaining that there are issues with your service or worse, they are losing money from a bug in your smart contract. In a normal situation with a startup that uses the cloud to host their app, this would be bad on many levels. Reputation is critical when you are new and every user makes a difference, and then having to correct issues with your data is another unpleasant experience you don't want to deal with. You are not a normal startup as you know, so this is much worse situation for you. Every bug has to be handled with a fix put into the smart contract which has to be re-launched and re-funded with Ethers to afford to run on the blockchain since you can't make changes to existing smart contracts on the blockchain once they have been confirmed by nodes. You are paying for your bugs quite literally. You or your technical partner has to be very good at building a test framework that eliminates most or all bugs before you have to go through the painful process of dealing with angry users and the inconvenience that is the blockchain. Compare this process with the standard process of making a bug fix, committing it to your github repository which triggers a pipeline that automatically builds and publishes your app to the cloud server. The whole process could take minutes and be done at virtually no cost as many times as you need, it could even be done by your outsourced IT team in Bangalore when you sleep.
5. Failing ICOs hurt the entire blockchain ecosystem
If you successfully raised funds from an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), you should be aware that not only is your reputation as a founder and business owner at stake, but that of the entire ecosystem. The blockchain technology is so new that you can be sure that if you fail there will be news about it and it will blow up in mainstream media. You will not get a second chance, and many entrepreneurs may not even get a first chance to launch an ICO after you decide to fold your publicly funded startup. This may actually be a good thing to limit the hype currently surrounding blockchain related startups, but it may also prevent projects with a lot of potential from succeeding. If you instead decide to grow over time using funds from investors that double as your advisors where the application can go through several testing phases, you stand a much greater chance at succeeding long term. You will at least have a beta version of your application ready before you launch and much less to prove to new investors even if they are willing to throw dumb money at you during an ICO. Just look at what happened in the aftermath of the Status ICO, this startup has not even had time to start working on building their beta version and thousands of investors and users of their platform are already upset and leaving them. I am sure this will prove to be a bigger issue for them long term than the upside of having $270 million USD in the bank. Bottom line is, grow slow and steady until you have a beta version that works instead of creating a fluffy white paper based on fancy business talk and empty words if you want to succeed long term. I wish you luck and look forward to seeing you in a decentralized future. |

Failing ICOs hurt the entire blockchain ecosystem
\n\nIf you successfully raised funds from an Initial Coin Offering (ICO), you should be aware that not only is your reputation as a founder and business owner at stake, but that of the entire ecosystem. The blockchain technology is so new that you can be sure that if you fail there will be news about it and it will blow up in mainstream media. You will not get a second chance, and many entrepreneurs may not even get a first chance to launch an ICO after you decide to fold your publicly funded startup. This may actually be a good thing to limit the hype currently surrounding blockchain related startups, but it may also prevent projects with a lot of potential from succeeding.\n\nIf you instead decide to grow over time using funds from investors that double as your advisors where the application can go through several testing phases, you stand a much greater chance at succeeding long term. I am sure this will prove to be a bigger issue for them long term than the upside of having $270 million USD in the bank.\n\nBottom line is, grow slow and steady until you have a beta version that works instead of creating a fluffy white paper based on fancy business talk and empty words if you want to succeed long term. I wish you luck and look forward to seeing you in a decentralized future.",

| title | Can Steem work for my platform? |
| body | I am a developer from Sweden who is currently living in Chicago, working at a large finance company. I have been playing with a platform concept in Ruby on Rails that creates rich media galleries where content creators such as YouTubers can get tips and comments on their creations. All my favorite YouTubers started making videos of how their ad revenue was drastically reduced so I wanted to add a monetization layer for them. I have used this platform to get into cryptocurrencies and learn how to sign and process transactions etc. I had completed the MVP using PayPal as a payment gateway to deposit and withdraw funds to user accounts, only to discover that it didn't really work out with their fees, even with the micro transactions option they offer. So, I removed all their API code and started learning about BlockCypher API for Bitcoin, which gave me an excuse to learn how to do transactions with the blockchain. After setting that up and getting ready to use their micro transactions API, I saw a new message on their docs page saying that the micro transactions API had been discontinued due to increasing transaction fees. I was bummed out and thinking I should give the other API they offer for Ethereum a chance as their fees are less than 1/10 of Bitcoins currently. I am currently in the process of figuring out how to convert all my API calls to use this beta REST API now and don't feel too excited anymore about the endless rewriting of my backend, and even with lower fees I still can't do direct transactions user to user with small amounts. I was watching the EOS presentation today on YouTube and it sounds like the solution to all my micro transaction issues I am having where high fees are becoming a big problem and the network delays causing me to have to keep track of tips and payments that have not been finalized yet. The problem with EOS however is that it has not launched yet! I learned that Steem has many of the qualities of EOS though, so it sounds like it could work for my platform as well. I focused on the visual aspect of showing off existing online media and to be able to monetize it by linking and viewing it through my platform. It uses a scrollable gallery that was designed for mobile first but looks great on a large monitor with lots of content. It is just an MVP currently so the UI is lacking in some features such as categories, favorites, subscriptions etc. It can auto-import all your YouTube videos into your gallery and monetizes them automatically with a tip button and separate comment section. I know the Steemit social media platform sounds similar in functionality to my gallery except for how it looks and that my platform mainly adds a visual monetization layer to existing content, so I have two questions for the Steemit community: - Should I implement a Steem API on my platform to handle micro transactions for tipping small amounts to other users ? - Is this still useful next to Steemit as a more visual platform with no article creation directly in the platform (you can link to articles and media and upload images/videos/files) ? It's not ready yet and will be 100% free to use, so I'll just add some images to get you an idea of how my platform works. I appreciate your feedback, and would love to be a participating member of your community. |
