And in the last one, we came at it from a different angle and completed the  trinity by addressing the host locations... If we don't address their needs, there is no reason to have a league. So, Why do they come? \n** Socializing/networking.dating/spending time with friends\n** Blow off steam/get away/night out\n** Enjoy competition\n* The Leagues-\n** Enjoy the sport/give back/grow leagues/responsibility to make better\n** Business/income\n** Spotlight/visibility/'known as'/image\n* The Establishments\n** Enjoy the atmosphere\n** Dependable income\n** Retain Employees\n** Cost effective form of advertising/marketing\n##### There are other reasons, sure. But these are the main driving force behind each group's involvement.\n> ##### Once we understand this, we can step back and realize that the missing link, the element which is not present is....\n## <center>__EDUCATION__</center>\n\n#### Let's Explore this from a Different Angle\n> ### Reasons why any of the 3 are not involved:\n* Unaware of leagues around them\n* Bad experience in past \n* Don't want to look stupid\n* Unsure of how to get involved\n* Cost?!?\n* Leagues are 'closed'\n* Don't like the crowd\n* Too much of a commitment\n*** And the list goes on\n###### __Any and All of the objections can be applied across the 3 groups, but once we are aware of where the 'other guy' is coming from, and the 'other guy' understands your perspective, they don't hold much weight.__\n>## <center> Let's be honest, the Education needs to begin with the Leagues and Supporting Businesses</center> \n>### <center>__They are the bridge which connects the whole thing... and they stand the most to gain (or lose)__</center>\n\nSo how to we begin to educate?\nWell, I'm glad you ask. \n__We begin by having conversations (like this one)__\n__We begin by having sites like this and using it as a communal resource__\nDo I have all the answers? Shit No. But I'm not afraid of the questions and I will get those answers.\ntheLEAGUEFEED isn't anything revolutionary. It's just a meeting place. Here to help out by looking at things with a fresh perspective, giving VOICE to a community which has had a limited say in the past.\n###### Educate- As League owners we need to answer those scary questions which are reflections of knowledge we have failed to provide to either group. Whether it's fear  we do not have the answers, or just  a passionate rush to build business, we cannot continue to gloss over the bad and focus only on the positives when talking with players and hosts. Not if we are in it for the long run.\n>## <center>And We Gather Our Resources</center>\nPost about your league HERE. Talk about the triumphs and tragedies. If you write you own post, I'll resteem it on this blog. Don't give up any trade secrets, but do make the community stronger (and your leagues deserve the recognition)...\nOffer HONEST advice. Let's not focus on bringing on a new host bar or throwing beginners in with advanced players just to turn a buck and fill a slot. As a business owner, an entrepreneur, we are better than that. It doesn't do anybody (including yourself) any favors, in the short or long run, and in fact, makes everyone's' job a little more difficult everytime it happens. Help build not only your business, but your league community\nEducate ourselves and others about our business and our sports, the demographics of the participants, how well which sport offering will and will not gel with each type of establishment. \nAnd be absolutely upfront about what commitments and returns these establishments will have. Losing a sale today, for a relationship down the road if necessary. \nEach League is it's own type of dysfunctional family and needs to be treated and respectedas a family would. We hold the establishments to the commitments we have been honest about, and it's a two-way street. We hold the players to a level of conduct when visiting these hosts. \nIt's tough, the leagues are so attuned to blowing smoke up your ass to make things happen, and then kissing that smokey ass to make things right afterwards. This is a major shift, but the years of slash and burn mentality are coming to a close. We need to look at win-win relationships, becoming a marketing arm to our host bars, etc.\nThere are Social Sports Organizations already taking this approach. Delivering more than they promise, and recruiting a loyal player and host/sponsor base as they go.\n>### And, then there are the Advocates\nTreat them like gold because they are much more precious!\nThese are the players, bar owners, administrators which make the league run smoothly, grow the amount of teams and players, and generally make the leagues look good.\nTo the Advocates I say-- You may have the most important voices in the whole damn mix. Speak up here, comment and coach, recruit. You're input is most welcome!\n\n> ##(center)Education and Growth--The Key Points(/center)\n(center)This may seem like a lot thought to be put into these silly little leagues, but any league owner, rep or administrator knows that in order for these 'night outs' to go seamlessly, there's a lot of work put in behind the scenes... Here's the takeaways:\n* Honesty- about what to expect in regards to the business a league will generate\n* Right Sports- Not all business is good or welcome business. Take a good look at the type of patron each establishment is trying to draw. On the flip side, take a look at the type of players which are drawn to each sport (demographics). If they are not comfortable with an establishment, they are going to visit as little as possible and if they play in-house this can be downright uncomfortable for all involved. If the league is offsight (dodgeball, soccer, bocce, etc) are they actually going to stop by, will they become returning patrons even when the league isn't in session? (The hope of the establishment)\n* A Little Different Way of Viewing the League Players-Understanding why a person plays in the league they play in, the sport they choose,  is crucial in making this night a success for everyone involved... As I have said before, leagues kind of grow like a dysfunctional family, bars and restaurants need to know upfront that they won't be 'flipping their tables' anytime soon. The players gather, and enjoy, and when treated well become lifelong customers and advocates of your place. Talking with friends and sending business your way. (if done right)\n* Advocates - Something We really only touched upon. They come from the league player ranks and can make both the size and quality of your leagues grow. But the most important Advocates are even closer to the business. They are your bartenders and waitstaff. They have the relationship with the customers, the influence. And when they are passionate about growing a league, they can do wonders. Give the a roll of marked quarters to challenge customers you would like to see in the leagues but may be too hesitant to give it a try. When it's slow, it's just like hanging out with a friend. And once you get them past the 'worry I'll look stupid' stage, 9 times out of 10 you'll have your next player, your next team captain, your next advocate. And this leads into the next point...\n* Recruitment - Often the approach is to find the best players and make them customers. Try this. Approach your best customers and turn them into players. How? Glad you asked. Resources like this blog with how-to's and playing tips for one...\n\nAnd so, we wrap it up.This isn't everything. People, friends, former co-workers, family... quietly talking amongst themselves. Wondering why or how I have lost my way. This strange infatuation, this impassioned quixotic venture where I snatch the golden ring on my merry go round pass. \n>'What's he thinking?', 'Look at where he is.', 'He's lost it...'\n\nI hear it. And occasionally I have my doubts. I question my vision, the course I have set. And then a couple of things happen...\nI remember corporations don't reward those who contribute the most, rather those who can jockey themselves into position to take credit for those contributions and innovations.\nAnd then I look at some of my old bosses and where they are now. Some have fought their way into higher positions and shortened 3-letter titles,  and are digging in, trying to hang onto the throne as long as they can. Some have retired and look back at the industry, feeling they can still contribute, but they realize they are only visitors, divorced, calling on their old family when they stop in to say hello...\nAnd there are some dullards who have entrenched themselves into 'special positions' who will grind it out until their cholesterol and clogged veins finally catch up with them, part of the crowd Art Bell once called 'the useless eaters'.\nIn any case, what difference did any one of these people really make? Is the corporation any better since they spent their life's work on it's growth. Or has the corporation merely used these people's lives and dreams and exertions as momentary fuel for the system-- like eating, digesting and shitting out a ham sandwich-- one of thousands and thousands it will consume over it's lifetime... A nice house, retirement, things I never really wanted anyway. The comfort of playing a game and winning, but only playing one game, only experiencing one big race, and having that to reflect upon, only that. For their Retirement Days...for months...for years...\nAnd I look around at these individuals who's sole pursuit in life is to be a piece of meat between two slices of bread for some larger entity to consume at will, to fuel it, to be one meal in many, an afterthought, a flush...\nA little over the top? Eh, maybe. But it does put me back on track...\n\nAnd I look at what lies before me, this Promised Land where I have tilled the ground and planted, with sore back and calloused hands, and begin to see sprouts...\n## The Adult Social Sports Community \nIt all started off with this in the '90s, when I was working radio and tv (as well as bartending) in a beach town...\n(The League Show recorded in the 90's)[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_fvkgDIFwE&t=1s]\n\nSummer was ending, and our local channel lacked 'pieces'-- 5 or so minute features on a business in town focusing on directing tourists to their businesses. *\" We're here today at Mackey's Bar and Grill on.... They run specials here on... Come meet the friendly staff... \" An interview with the owner, shots of the food, happy customers, the sun setting over the bay...* It's what we did all Summer. And then Winter arrived... The shows turned to more of a local focus and programming was a lot more open to ideas to generate viewer interest and ad dollars.\nI had a great idea!-- I played leagues for a couple of years at this point. Helped grow them a the bar I worked at and became quite good at recruiting people to play. I had a little different approach. Most teams were formed with people who already played the sports. Whether it was pool or darts or shufflebowl or foosball or whatever. I looked at the customers who I would like to see on league night. The best customers and patrons of the bar, not necessarily the best players. I would pull them aside while I bartended and challenge them to a game on the dart board, pool table, etc. I gave them a  taste of a game they have seen others playing, made sure they had fun (I have been known to be a little bit of a showman), and gradually built teams with them. They still came to win on league night, but it was much more important that they had fun and the bar really prospered from having it's best customers and their friends in on additional evenings... So the leagues were a big part of locals' off season, hence a big part of our Winter VIEWING AUDIENCE'S interest...\nWhat if I put together a league show, brought on a couple of sponsors, offered a tip or two on how to play different sports, hosted a special tournament here and there, interviewed a player, etc and did each show from a sponsor location pressing their off season specials for the first minute. I would wrap with league standings for the week and any big matches coming up... \nAnd then, urged by wife and family, our family left the beach to start a 'real' career. \nI left that life, and the leagues behind, but that show and the leagues never left my mind. For twenty years I have mentally adjusted this show, in my head and in notebooks. Until now...\nWithin the past couple of years I have made a real push to become a voice for this industry.       "body": "Upvoted because, yes, steemit is a form of media and as such has two revenue streams which you listed (advertising, consumer $). I think we may be missing something a little more obscure though. Steemit is a marketing tool for steem. It gives the platform a 'viability', some substance in very competitive and new field (cryptocurrency). Where bitcoin was a pioneer and relied on it's initial 'catch all' versatility, we are  now seeing product launches for this currency which specializes in niches like NLC2 targeting the fantasy sports market. Steem has made  a very good play here with steemit, steepshot, zappl and chainBB (probably getting some of these wrong) in digging their heels into the booming social media market. Their 'branding' cost is covered by volunteers who choose to use their product and promote it for both their gain and the gain of Steem (content creators like you and me). It really is some nicely done business. It sets the chess board for social giants like Twitter and Facebook to answer in kind for content, not play a shell game with their users, adjust the rules and then demand a portion of income these user make....\nAre they going to overtake Instagram or Twitter? Probably not, but they put themselves in a strong position to be the currency of choice when these giants finally concede to rewarding their content providers in the future. Hold onto your Steem. even if steemit doesn't become the next big platform, the currency model is forcing acknowledgement for the powers that be, and this marketing plan has put this crypto in the forefront to be the currency of choice for the next generation of social media trends.\nJust a thought... where do most entrepreneurs live? In the social media hemisphere. How many of them are looking at low cost, high impact, high involvement for their next project? How do you bring on a million highly involved employees who will promote your product and not pay dime in healthcare or social security or whatever? Very attractive for new product and service launches...\nWith the rollout of steemit (and dapps), looks like Steem has made a very good move. \nPeace",
