| title | HMS Natal |
| body | With the newspaper stories that I am going to post hopefully every day, any story that grabs mt eye, I will write a blog on more research carried out. Today, January 8th, I posted an article from the Harald of Wales and Monmouthshire Recorder, dated 8th January 1916, page 8, an article stating the the news recieved of the death of A.B. Arthur Thomas, of Manselton, crew member of HMS Natal. HMS Natal, was a warrior class armoured cruiser, construction was started in 1904 by the ship builders Vickers, Sons & Maxim, Burrow-in-Furness and finished 1907, at the cost of £1,218,244. Christened by Louisa Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. Before the outbreak of the First World War, HMS Natal saw service as an escort to the ocean liner RMS Medina, which was the royal yacht of the new king, George V, on a trip to India. After that, the HMS Natal during December 1912, carried the body of the US Ambassdor, Whitelaw Reid, back to New York for burial. At the outbreak of war, HMS Natal was part of the Grand Fleet, refitted at Cromarty, Firth. Much of 1915, she was patrol the North Sea. 30th December 1915, whilst at Cromarty, the captain, Eric Back hosted a party and invited 7 wives and 3 children of all the officers, one civilian friend, his family and all the nurses from nearby hospital ship Diana. Shortly after 3.25, there were without warning a series of violent explosions, which tore through the rear of the ship. Within minutes the HMS Natal had capsized. It was thought that the ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat, however divers were sent down to to the wreckage, where they found explosions were caused by the internal ammunition, caused possible by faulty cordite. Those that were lost on the ship which are listed on the Commonwealth War grave Commission website number to 405. They were commemorated on the Portsmouth or Chatham Naval Memorials. The children and women were not counted as dead. One of those killed was Arthur Thomas, he was 21 years old. Son of David and Margaret Thomas, lived at 20 Manselton Road, Manselton. The 1911 census list the family, Arthur Thomas occupation, then 16 was in the Tin Works. Below is the page from the 1911 Census, with kind permission from Census Returns of England and Wales, 1911. Kew, Surrey, England: The National Archives of the UK (TNA), 1911 |

| title | Titanic and Swansea Cenotaph Connection |
| body | Last week I set a question. What was connections between the R.M.S. Titanic and Swansea Cenotaph. This is my answer, however, if you have a different answer feel free to drop me a line. Starting with 1912. R.M.S. Titanic set sails on her maiden voyage from Southampton on the 10th April, only to sink 5 days later after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean, with a loss of at least 1,5000 people. One of those person to lose his life was the American millionaire John Jacob Astor. Astor was a prominent member of the Astor Family. Another sad case with the Titanic story, is the paperboy, Ned Parfett. Ned's fame rose when he was photographed, with the papers, Evening Post, he was selling with the headlines "Titanic Disaster Great Loss of Life". Ned lived at Cromwell Road, Waterloo Sadly by 1918, near the end of the war, on the 29th October 1918, whilst at the Quartermaster stores' collecting clothes before going on leave, a shell landed killing all those inside. He was awarded in 1916 the Military Medal. He is buried in a British Cemetery. Moving on to the Swansea Cenotaph. The Foundation Stone laid on 1st July 1922 by Field Marshal Haig. The inscription reads THIS STONE WAS LAID BY/ F.M. EARL HAIG OF BEMERSYDE K.T. G.C.B. O.M G.C.V.O K.C.I.E. ON THE FIRST DAY OF JULY 1922 UNDER THIS STONE LIES THE KINGS SHILLING PLACED BY MRS FEWINGS REPRESENTING THE WAR WIDOWS. We have to look at Haig's family for the connection. Haig's daughter, Irene Freesia Janet Augusta Haig, born 1919. Irene married Gavin Astor. For me to illustrate this clearer we have to go back to John Jacob Astor, 1763-1848, Gavin's 4x great grandfather. Jacob Jacob Astor, had to sons, John Jacob Astor, 1791-1869 and William Backhouse Astor 1792-1875. It is from this line we go forward William had two sons, John Jacob Astor 1822-1890 and William Backhouse Astor 1830-1892. John Jacob Astor, 1822-1890, son William Waldor Astor, 1848-1919, son John Jacob Astor 1886-1971, son Gavin Astor 1918-1984. Husband of Haig. The other line William Backhouse Astor, 1830-1892, son John Jacob Astor, 1864-1912 Hope this makes interesting reading |

| title | Connections......Art,Science,Photography,Politics and Gower Answer |
| body | I set a question on Saturday evening.......Connections Art, Science, Photography, Politics and Gower. Here is my answer, though you might think you might have a better answer and i welcome them. Lets start of with Art. In one of the previous blog, I wrote about the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, locally known as the the Glynn Vivian. The building was built resulting from the generous offer from Richard Glynn Vivian, when he offered his collections of painting, drawings and china to the city, and an endowment of £10,000, during 1905. Vivian an collected his art collection from his travels around Europe and various other places. 1909, blind, Vivian laid the foundation stone. By the time of the opening of the gallery, in 1911 he was dead, and the opening ceremony was performed by his brother Graham. Artist to have their work, to feature here include, Cedric Morris, Alfred Janes, Ceri Richards, Augustus John and Kyffin Williams, naming just a few. Also there were donations made by Deffett Francis. I will come back to him later! More about Richard Glynn Vivian born 1835, was the youngest son of the industrialist John Henry Vivian. When John died in 1855, the 19 year old Richard inherited a quarter of his father's successful copper business, Vivian & Sons. Instead of he followed his pursuits of travel and the arts. 1885 he married Laura Hermone Beatrice Halkett, the marriage only last 6 years, when she divorces him in 1891. This was very uncommon for the lady to do the divorcing. During 1898, he purchased Sketty Hall. We will come back to this building in due course. Richard was to house his vast art collection, till 1911 when the art gallery was finally built. With failing sight, Richard strengthening his Christian faith, establishing missions halls in Bright, Swansea and Japan. Today mission halls are known as the International Miners' Mission. Richard also established the Glynn Vivian Rest Home for the Blind, at Caswell. Richard died at his London home, during 1910. Lets turn our attention to his father, John Henry Vivian. John born 1785, was the son of John. It was was his father who established his copper works, the one already named above, Vivian & Sons. John the second son, (the first being Hussey Vivian, of Waterloo fame), was a manager of the Penclawdd site. John above not owned the copper works, in Swansea, there were sites also located at Liverpool, Birmingham and London. During 1817, he purchased Marino. This building became to be known as Singleton Abbey. What we see today, the neo-gothic building is the work by the architect, of P. F. Robinson. His works also include the already mentioned Sketty Hall, and Swiss Cottage, situated in Singleton Park. Singleton Abbey was the home of the Vivians for several years, it was to sold in 191 by Lord Swansea, to Swansea Corporation. John was also to serve as Member of Parliament for Swansea District from 1832 - 1855, 23 years. He was also a fellow of the Royal Society. John died during 1855. For the time being that is the end of the Vivians. The next Member of Parliament of Swansea District from 1855 - 1885 and during the constituency Swansea, 1885 - 1892, was Lewis Llewelyn Dillwyn. Lewis Llewelyn Dillwyn was born 1814, was the son of Lewis Weston Dillwyn, and Mary Dillwyn. We will come back to L.L Dillwyn shortly Lewis Weston Dillwyn, born 1778, Essex , after his father the Quarker, William Dillwyn had returned from America. Lewis Weston Dillwyn brought the Cambrian Pottery. Cambrian Pottery, was founded during 1764 by William Coles. Coles went into partnership with George Haynes and they introduced new business strategies set out by Josiah Wedgwood. Coles went, and Dillwyn came in 1802, and finally in 1810, Haynes left. Dillwyn married during 1807, Mary Adams, daughter of John Llewellyn of Penllergaer. Dillwyn temporarily retired from the Pottery and he was High Sheriff of Glanmorganshire and was the first Member of Parliament of First Reformed Parliament of 1834. During 1839, he purchased Sketty Hall. Thats one connections ticked. Sketty Hall was build during 1720, and during the 18th century was used as a private house. Back to Lewis Llwellyn Dillwyn. Not only was he the longest Swansea serving Member of Parliament of 37 years, he was also a industrialist. Playing a major part of Swansea industrial developments. Founding with Landore spelter works with Richards, then forming a partnership with William Siemens. L. L. Dillwyn married the daughter of friend and geologist Henry De la Beche, Elizabeth. They were to have four children. We will come back to the daughter, Amy. They family lived in Hendrefoilan House, which was built for them during 1853. L. L. Dillwyn's sibling were the pioneer photographer, John Dillwyn Llewellyn and photographer, Mary Dillwyn. First John Dillwyn Llewellyn, born 1810. On coming to age he inherited his grandfather, John Llewelyn's estates at Penllergaer. He also had to take his name Llewelyn. It was here in Dillwyn Llewelyn's observatory that the first photograph of the moon were taken. Dillwyn Llewelyn married in 1833, Emma Thomasina Talbot, daughter of Thomas Mansel Talbot and Mary Lucy. Thomas Mansel Talbot was of Margam and Penrice Castle. Thomas Mansel Talbot's father was Rev. Thomas Talbot, whose sister was Martha Talbot, married Rev. William Davenport. One of the children was William Davenport Talbot, father of William Henry Fox Talbot. Fox Talbot was the inventor and photography pioneer. Henry Fox Talbot and Lewis Weston Dillwyn were friends. A little confusing I know. I hope you are still with me! Dillwyn Llewelyn also assisted Charles Wheatstone, scientist, on the first experiments in sub-marine telegraph off Mumbles Head. Dillwyn Llewelyn and Emma had the children, Thereza and John Talbot Dillwyn.. Dillwyn Llewelyn died in 1892 Mary Dillwyn born 1816, was the earliest female photographer. Mary is credited for the first photograph of a snowman. As you see we are nearly coming full circle. Turning back to Lewis Llewelyn Dillwyn, who died during his campaign trail of 1892 dying at the Royal Hotel, Swansea. He was buried St. Paul's church, Sketty. St. Paul's Church, was built by Henry Vivian, brother of Richard Vivian. It was built, 1850, in memory of the death of his wife, Jessie's death in 1848. The church is situated on de la Beche, Sketty. The road was named after Henry de la Beche, whose daughter, Elizabeth married Lewis Lewelyn Dillwyn. After his death, Lewis Llewelyn Dillwyn, the Conservative candidate was his nephew, Sir John Llewelyn. Lewis Llewelyn Dillwyn's daughter was Amy Dillwyn. The last piece of the jigsaw. Amy Dillwyn was born 1845. She was the first female industrialist in Britain, also a novelist. Amy had a close relationship with Olive Talbot. Olive was the daughter of Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot. Brother, of Emma Thomansina Talbot, son of Thomas Mansel Talbot. Amy and Olive were both wealth. Olive was to died in 1894, and Amy dying 1935. Thats all the connections. |

I hope you are still with me!\n\nDillwyn Llewelyn also assisted Charles Wheatstone, scientist, on the first experiments in sub-marine telegraph off Mumbles Head.\n\nDillwyn Llewelyn and Emma had the children, Thereza and John Talbot Dillwyn.. Dillwyn Llewelyn died in 1892\n\nMary Dillwyn born 1816, was the earliest female photographer.\n\n\n\nMary is credited for the first photograph of a snowman.\n\n\n\nAs you see we are nearly coming full circle.\n\nTurning back to Lewis Llewelyn Dillwyn, who died during his campaign trail of 1892 dying at the Royal Hotel, Swansea. He was buried St. Paul's church, Sketty.\n\nSt. Paul's Church, was built by Henry Vivian, brother of Richard Vivian. It was built, 1850, in memory of the death of his wife, Jessie's death in 1848. The church is situated on de la Beche, Sketty. The road was named after Henry de la Beche, whose daughter, Elizabeth married Lewis Lewelyn Dillwyn.\n\nAfter his death, Lewis Llewelyn Dillwyn, the Conservative candidate was his nephew, Sir John Llewelyn.\n\nLewis Llewelyn Dillwyn's daughter was Amy Dillwyn.\n\nThe last piece of the jigsaw.\n\nAmy Dillwyn was born 1845. She was the first female industrialist in Britain, also a novelist.\n\n\n\nAmy had a close relationship with Olive Talbot. Olive was the daughter of Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot. Brother, of Emma Thomansina Talbot, son of Thomas Mansel Talbot.\n\nAmy and Olive were both wealth. Olive was to died in 1894, and Amy dying 1935.\n\nThats all the connections.",

| body | I have started to read 'Dead Man Airbrushed' a novel by Ieuan M. Pugh. The novel is set in early 1960s, and follows the misadventures of Johannes Taliesion at Swansea College of Art. At the beginning of the story, Taiesin fails the admission tests to join the RAF, their response is for Taiesin's application for Swansea College of Art. The RAF Staff Sergeant, describes the college as "The famous Swansea Collage of Art" Taiesin has travelled to Swansea via Cardiganshire on the train, and we see him arriving at Alexandra Road. Taiesin gazes in wonder at the red brick and dressed Portland stone edifice that was the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. Opposite the gallery, was the "famous art college in Wales", Swansea Collage of Art, built in the same same brick and Portland stone, a the gallery, althought slightly taller. Along the same road was the Deffett Francis Library and the Central Police Station. This is the beginning Taiesion's college life. With this back drop, lets look at the history of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, and those people behind it. Locally is referred to as "Glynn Vivian", and never as the art gallery. In its collection are pieces of works from artist such as Fred Jones, Ceri Richards, Evan Walters, Herman Shapiro and Joseph Herman. We have to look back to 1905, when Richard Glynn Vivian offered Swansea a collection of his paintings, drawings and china, along with a £10,000. He laid the foundation stone in 1909, by this time he was blind. Sadly he was dead by gallery opening ceremony 1911, which was performed by his brother Graham Vivian. Richard Glynn Vivian born 1835 was the youngest son of John Henry Vivian, and his uncle was the hero of Waterloo, Hussey Vivian, see previous blog. Richard was 19 when his father died, and he inherited a quarter of his father's copper business, Vivian & Sons. Richard had no interest in the business and chose to travel and followed follow his passion of art. With a vast art collection, Richard purchased Sketty Hall in 1898 and installed the collection there. The first curator of the Glynn Vivian, was William Grant Murray, who held the post from 1910 to 1950, his death. He was also the Principal of Swansea Art School from 1908 to 1943. Murray was also to leading part of Swansea to acquire the British Empire Panels by Frank Brangwyn in 1934. The panels are now situated in the Brangwyn Hall. The other character mentioned is Deffett Francis. John Deffett Francis, was the son of John Francis, coachbuilder. His brother was George Grant Francis, antiquary. From humble beginnings these men went to become something. John born 1815, was a painted and collector. He would devote his work to painting, especially portrait-painting. Some of his sitters include the queen, Queen Victoria, the founder of the police force, Sir Robert Peel and other notable people. He moved with the literal circle in London, with authors such as Dickens, Thackeray and Ruskin. Francis became a one of the founder members of the Savage Club. He is remembered as a art collector with the gallery named after him the Deffet Francis Art Gallery. He died in 1901. Hopefully Swansea will be named as City of Culture 2021. |

| title | Early days of the Mumbles Railway |
| body | We have to look back to 1804, to have a good understanding of the beginnings of the Swansea and Mumbles Railway. Back in 1804, the railway was known as the Oystermouth Railway, when built when an Act was passed for the the removal of limestone at a quarry at Oystermouth and moved to Swansea Docks, where it would transported all over the world. AT Act, situated that haulage was carried out men, horses or otherwise. .jpg) Work was carried by the Oystermouth Tramroad Company. The chairman, was Sir John Morris, and on the board was his son, John Armine Morris. John the send Baronet of Clasemont. He also built Clasmont Mansion, Morriston. The original garage that was laid was 4 ins with L shaped tramplates mounted on stone. Work was completed in in 1806, and with a formal ceremony. The train ran from the Swansea Canal, Swansea around the sweep of the bay to Oystermouth. The following year, 1807, Benjamin French, offered to pay £20 to Oystermouth Tramroad Company, where he was able to transport fee paying passengers for 12 months. The first passenger to use the train was 25th March 1807. Venture was a success. I will write about the changes made on railway in the following in a following blog. |
