This in mind, detecting the disease early is crucial to increase chances of survival. And one African inventor is at the forefront of this challenge. \r\n<h5><b>Introducing Matibabu</b></h5>\r\nMeaning '<a href=\"http://www.okayafrica.com/ugandan-inventor-wins-africa-prize-for-engineering-bloodless-malaria-test-brian-gitta/\">treatment</a>' in Swahili, Matibabu is the first device of its kind capable of diagnosing <a href=\"https://www.sutava.com/charity-multinationals-malaria/\">malaria</a> without drawing any blood. Invented by<a href=\"http://www.okayafrica.com/ugandan-inventor-wins-africa-prize-for-engineering-bloodless-malaria-test-brian-gitta/\"> Mr. Brian Gitta</a>, a 24 year old innovator from Uganda, alongside his team, the device received international recognition after winning the Royal Academy of Engineering's Africa Prize in June 2018.\r\n<h5><b>How Does it Work?</b></h5>\r\n Matibabu uses magnetism and light to <a href=\"https://www.scidev.net/global/malaria/news/test-spots-malaria-in-two-minutes-without-blood.html\">diagnose</a> the disease. Unlike regular tests that work by detecting molecules produced by the malaria parasite, Matibabu works by <a href=\"https://www.voanews.com/a/bloodless-test-detects-malaria-with-light-wins-prize/4452179.html\">shining a beam</a> of light onto a person’s finger to detect changes in red blood cells that could result from malaria infection. These results are then sent to a cell phone within two minutes.\r\n<h5><b>How Revolutionary is Matibabu?</b></h5>\r\nAs the device doesn’t require a blood sample, no <a href=\"https://www.passporthealthusa.com/2018/06/what-is-a-bloodless-malaria-test/\">expertise</a> is needed to operate it, unlike with conventional blood tests requiring trained medical staff. This means that with Matibabu, anyone could test for the disease by themselves at home. \r\n\r\nMatibabu is also <a href=\"https://www.passporthealthusa.com/2018/06/what-is-a-bloodless-malaria-test/\">reusable</a> unlike conventional blood tests for malaria infection. This makes it both potentially more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective than these tests too. \r\n\r\nProducing its results in<a href=\"https://www.passporthealthusa.com/2018/06/what-is-a-bloodless-malaria-test/\"> under two minutes</a>, it's also many times faster than more traditional blood tests that often take 30 minutes or more to produce results. And of course, as no blood is drawn, it’s a painless method for screening and testing for malaria infection- a huge gain for children.\r\n<h5><b>The Future</b></h5>\r\nCurrently, the accuracy of this device stands at around 80%. This unfortunately means that around 20% of cases go undetected, something that could be a huge <a href=\"https://www.scidev.net/global/malaria/news/test-spots-malaria-in-two-minutes-without-blood.html\">problem</a> in malaria endemic zones where 20% translates to a large proportion of the population. This in mind, Mr. Gitta and colleagues are working to increase Matibabu's <a href=\"https://www.voanews.com/a/bloodless-test-detects-malaria-with-light-wins-prize/4452179.html\">accuracy</a> to exceed 90%, putting it on par with <a href=\"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/19407111/\">conventional</a> blood tests.\r\n<h5><b>In Sum </b></h5>\r\nMatibabu is a device that can diagnose malaria infection without drawing blood in under two minutes. [Tim Ferriss](https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_ferriss_why_you_should_define_your_fears_instead_of_your_goals), author or “4-Hour Work Week” has a way to deal with this fear.\n\n<b>How?</b>\n\n“We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.” is a famous quote by Seneca. It tells us that a lot of the fears we have in our heads- often the ones that stop us from taking action- are imaginary. In order to take these fears out of our heads, Ferriss recommends a writing exercise that should take no more than 30 minutes.\n\n<b>Fear-Setting</b>\n\nFerriss recommends taking three pages to write on. On the first, he asks you to consider what could possibly go wrong if you do what you intend to under three columns.\n\nThe first column: ‘define’ is where you list 10- 20 possible worst-scenario issues you could face if you go ahead with what you want to do.\n\nThe second column: ‘Prevent’, is where you write how you can prevent or at least mitigate them from happening.\n\nThe third column: ‘Repair’, is where you write what you could do if the worst case scenario happens.\n\nFor example, say you have a public speaking commitment coming up. Under ‘define’ you could say “Get anxious and make an idiot of yourself”. Under “prevent” you could put, “Make sure you learn your lines well and practice in front of different audiences of family and friends beforehand”. Under “repair” you could ask people you know speak publicly very well how they managed to train themselves and what techniques they use to avoid nerves.\n\n<b>What Next?</b>\n\nThe next two pages are simpler. On the second page, you should spend 10-15 minutes writing down the benefits of an attempt or partial success. On the third, he asks to consider the cost of inaction.\n\nAlthough we’re usually great at preempting the costs of action, we often forget to consider what may happen if we do nothing and maintain the status quo. Often, 6 months, one year or even three years down the line, this could be a higher and more dangerous risk than the risks of trying.\n\n<b>No More Fear?</b>\n\nAlthough a great way to overcome fear, Tim warns that sometimes after this exercise, you may realise that some risks are too big to be taken. Nevertheless, he still recommends using this exercise every so often to assess big decisions and opportunities as they come.\n\nTo conclude, growing will likely never feel comfortable. But is this really the case?\n\n<b>It’s Difficult to Say</b>\n\nIn 2014, a [study](https://www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g6015) in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) of over 105,000 Swedish men and women taken over 20 years showed that high milk consumption is associated with higher mortality rates. It also showed that high milk consumption leads to more bone fractures in women, but not in men.\n\n<b>But Why?</b>\n\nAnimal [studies](https://www.bmj.com/content/349/bmj.g6015) have suggested a link between daily consumption of galactose, or “milk sugar”, and “oxidative stress and inflammation”, a major cause of age-related diseases and cancer. This goes some way in explaining why in the 2014 BMJ study above, women consuming more fermented milk products such as yoghurt and cheese experienced a lower risk of bone fracture and mortality.
