      "body": "In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court declared abortion legal in the United States. While this decision is regarded as a landmark in U.S. legal history, it wreaks of questionable methods of Constitutional interpretation and judicial activism. The case is riddled with lapses in historical accuracy. Legal precedence is omitted or wrongfully interpreted. The most referenced case in U.S. history is shamefully botched.\n\nThe position of the Supreme Court is to interpret the Constitution, and therefore conclude a legally correct ruling. Here, the definition of legally correct is a ruling that expresses a definitively enumerated right of the U.S. Constitution. Like it or not, the ideals of society mean nothing to what the court can and cannot do in true legality. If something beyond the constitution needs to change, it is required to amend the Constitution itself, which is another long and complicated legal discussion. Without the express permission of the Constitution, any Supreme Court ruling is meaningless and ultimately illegal. Moreover, the Supreme Court does not have the power to make laws, but merely to decide what should be the law. Right or wrong, like it or not, this is the legal way of the United States of America\n\nHow is the Constitution interpreted? Firstly, the wording of the constitution itself, or Constitutional Measurement, is called into question. The right in question must be consistent with the wording of the Constitution, and concur with Authorial Intention. Sometimes the phrasing of the Constitution is difficult to apply to certain situations, so the courts look to what they can determine about what the authors of the Constitution itself meant. To determine this, the court looks to established legal history and weight of precedent in the U.S. and in Common Law. When America was created, we had no legal precedence to speak of. The colonists brought the English Common Law with them to America and adopted it. Common Law is the basis of our own laws and the Constitution. English Common Law is the foundation of our own, and has centuries of legal precedence to draw from. Our own young country has far less. The authors of the Constitution used Common Law as a basis for their document, and that is why the Supreme Court uses it to determine Authorial Intention.\n\nThat is why historical accuracy and precedence is so vital to this ruling. Yet the court consistently ignores important aspects of history and devotes undue attention to pieces of history ultimately meaningless to the issue at hand.       "body": "In my senior year of high school, the most engrossing and difficult assignment was a full length research paper on the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court case. What surprised me was that they were not looking for the moral debate I would have been happy to give. Rather, they were looking for a legal presentation. They wanted me to tell them whether or not Roe vs. Wade was legal in light of the U.S. Constitution. Now this was intriguing. So much so, that I wanted to share what my research led me to. This paper taught me more about law and the American legal system than an entire textbook did. While the moral debate may rage on, both sides should pay closer attention to different angle of this argument. Though perhaps the most referenced and most discussed case in U.S. history, Roe vs. Wade is questionable at best, and most don't even know it. A solid and confident decision based on equally solid and confident evidence was never found. While the people were distracted by their brutal moral arguments, the courts were doing what they do best, disregarding the law. This is why I think that while morality should always be scrutinized, we as a people should be paying far more attention to what is actually legal in our country. If we as a people watched our government more closely and refused to allow such blatant indescrepencies, our country may be a more fair and favorable place for all.\n\nThe Roe vs. Wade case was rushed. Facts were presented with weak references, historical evidence was omitted or wrongfully interpreted. Basic questions were never asked, problems were danced around until they were forgotten. In many cases, it almost seemed as though the court were trying to convince itself that the social issue at hand was more important than the constitutional. They referenced the opinions and attitudes of societies such as medical associations as support for their interpretation of the constitution. These issues should never have been tolerated in our nation's highest court of law. Yet, we stand by their verdict to this day, 45 years later.",

      "body": "There are many stages to editing. Macro, micro, and line edits. Each serves a definitive and important purpose when prepping a book for publication.\n\n##### Round 1: Macro\n\nIn this round, large issues such as plot holes, lacks or inconsistencies in character arcs, inadequate settings and theme errors are distinguished and fixed. The basic rule for this round is to read through the completed draft, and mark any edits needed.\n\nFirst and foremost are the character arcs. Protagonists and antagonists alike need to be logical, consistent, and well motivated. Good, endearing characters can sell a book lacking in plot. They are the first and last concern alike.\n\nThe second area of concern is plot. All stages of either the Three Act Structure or Monomyth, whichever utilized, must be reviewed and made to be tight, logical, and emotionally standing. The beginning, midpoint, and ending are especially important.\n\nThe setting should be a tool for the plot. For sci-fi or fantasy, (particularly high fantasy) the setting in vitally important. Laws of magic, nature, and science need to be perfect. They need to be consistent and logical. In other genres, the setting should still be well researched.\n\nFinally, last but certainly not least, are the themes. The theme of the story should be cleverly disguised but none-the-less obvious. One should consider symbols while in this stage. The themes should be considered when reviewing the character arcs, villain and hero alike. Besides, the theme should be focused, and leading the journey of the hero. Their character has to play off the theme in perfect synchronization.\n\n##### Round 2: Micro\nOnce the macro edit is completed, and the story itself laid out to satisfaction, more technical details come into play. Point of view, flashbacks scenes, dialogue, telling vs showing, description, and really focusing on the actual writing style itself.\n\nPoint of view, and even the person in which it is written, is to be reviewed with certainty. Firstly, the story needs to be consistent in tense. A mix of present and past tense will upset the overall prose. Not only this, but a third or first person narrative does not mix well with a omniscient perspective. Secondly, for those stories which sport two or more POV’s, every scene and which character it is seen through should be carefully considered.\n\nFlashback scenes and backstory are a tricky thing to master. Every flashback should be short, concise, and to the point. Do not include any flashbacks that are not completely necessary. Also, giving all of the details in a flashback is generally not a good idea. The details need to bleed through the character, just like the backstory itself. The details of the characters life need to come slowly, naturally, and in an inconspicuous way.\n\nDialogue needs to be realistic, but not to the point of boring. Make your characters omit words completely unnecessary, yet common in conversations. Chances are that the reader will not notice they are missing. It will make the dialogue tighter, take up less words, more entertaining, and serve a greater purpose. All dialogue should be considered with the questions of why the character would say that thing at that specific time, and the character-specific manner of speech in which it is said. All the characters should have a distinguished voice, and a particular way in which they convey information. Of course, action beats and dialogue tags should be reviewed and carefully considered. There should be a greater ratio of action beats than dialogue tags utilizing a more specific word than ‘said’. Remember body language and manner of perception.\n\nTelling and showing, the never-ending battle, is to be dealt with in this stage. Checking for repetitive words as well as adverbs are to be addressed.\n\nFinally, description. Description of scenes varies on style, but as a general statement, the time, place, and characters involved. The scene needs to be described as the character would see it. A cynical character is going to see things in a faulty way, and so forth. Use specific words and sensory details\n\n##### Round 3: Line\n\nThe line edit is where you’ll deal with the nit-picky things such as grammar, punctuation, and formatting. You can never be too right, so be careful as you pick through for things like scene breaks, margins, headings, footings, title and dedication pages, and dialogue areas.\n\nIt is had to believe that it could ever end. But after all of this, the story is really, truly done.
